RAM problem? Crashing computer...

So, each and every few days, I usually get a full computer reboot after waking my computer up, or just from using an application.
Not only that, but sometimes, not rarely, more or less uncommonly, my computer starts to go haywire and the screen starts to collapse.
Like, most of the pixel on the computer screen just starts to spark out and change colour, etc.
When this occurs, I been doing restarting my computer manually, and rarely, my computer won't turn on.
Instead, it plays a beep sound with 5 seconds interval, and my computer won't turn on.
My friend fixed that problem by turning the computer on in safemode. This worries me.
He tells me if it's the RAM problem, but I'm not sure, so I came here.
And is there any ways to prevent all this from happening?

Beep tones at boot time do indicate a RAM issue.
If you installed third party RAM, then it's likely no good and will have to be replaced, or perhaps it wasn't seated correctly.
If it's Apple RAM and your machine is under warranty or AppleCare, let them fix it.
You can perform a Hardware Test, also download and use Rember and run a extended test overnight (no other programs running) to try to get hard evidence.

  • MBP 6GB Ram upgrade crashes computer

    Hello,
I've recently upgraded my Macbook Pro with 6GB of ram (went from 2GB - 6GB).
Since the install, my computer quits programs and often gives me the black shut down screen.
Sometimes after the crash, the computer will beep and get stuck in the silver loading screen prior to boot up. Other times, it will take me to the log in screen just fine.
When I reinstall the two single GB ram, my computer doesn't have any problems (albeit less memory).
Activity Monitor doesn't show anything extreme, yet the computer crashes.
I've ran several tests, and everything seems to be installed correctly. What else can I do to figure out what the problem is and get my computer stable?
    My computer:
    Snow Leopard, 10.6.3
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    6 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Mid Summer 2008 Model
    Thanks in advance.

Test with one of the old 1GB modules and one of the new modules in place, then switch new modules and test with the other one in place. This may help you determine which of the new modules is bad. Or if you don't want to be bothered with time-consuming testing, just return both new modules for a refund or exchange.

  • KT4 Ultra RAM problems and others

    Hi,
    just bought KT4 Ultra, with 512MB DDR-RAM 266/2100 CL 2,5 and Athlon XP 2100+, BIOS V1.2.
During boot-up the computer tells me, that I've got 1024 MB RAM although I only have 512MB. Linux says the same and RAM Test Software does too !! I can't install RedHat nor Windows XP, they always crash, prbably due to RAM problem.
I've already tried out all 3 memory slots.
Any suggestion what to do ?
Why does the computer not recognize any device on the 3rd IDE port ( neither IBM Deskstar w/ 40GB, LS 120 Drive, CD-ROM Drive). My BIOS doesn't show ANY options for the 3rd IDE port!
    TIA

Is that in the BIOS under: Serial Ata - enabled ? ( I did that !)
    Try http://www.memtest86.com
    Already did, it always crashes.
    Have you tried another RAM?
'Have no other RAM available right now.
And I can't start my computer anymore, since the cpu fan wont work. I plugged the cpu fan into the manboard-fan plug but then the mainboard won't be cooled. That can't work all too long, can it ?

  • I guess another person with RAM problems

I'll start from the very beginning.  I ordered the rest of my new comp two weeks ago, Neo Platinum and 3200+ newcastle.  I finally recieved them the thursday after I ordered them and built it that night.  For RAM, because of the 754 only having 3 RAM slots I traded 2 Apacer 3200 256MB sticks for one Corsair XMS 3200 512MB and included with it 2 Infineon 3200 128MB sticks. It succesfully posted.  So I went to install XP on a formatted HDD, which took 4 different copies.  The first was having many corrupted files and and so I went on to a copy of home which also had trouble loading and BSOD a few times, then another copy of pro and finally the last copy of pro, which BSOD many times, including during installation so I had to redo it, though it eventual was installed. The first two times it started up it gave me a BSOD on stratup though the third went fine. The next restart it BSOD'ed only once and it was this way for a few more restarts. It would also BSOD when changing things in programs such as resolution and mozilla firefox would crash very very often. I noticed that the two infineon sticks were causing the clockrate to go down to 333Mhz and took them out, though I still had general instability it was better than nothing while I tried to figure it out.  A few days later I asked a friend and he imediatly said RAM, he thought it was the clockrate not syncing right.  I checked and it was 200Mhz, no problems there.  Later I made a post about this and asking for my RAM timings to be evaluated, somebody mentioned using Memtest86 if I had any problems with RAM. That night I let it go and in 7 hours it had 14000 errors, 300 errors each retest.  I swaped in the infineon RAM and got only a few errors each time, so I tried to see which stick was not working. Both would go fine when alone but there were still a few errors each time I tried both at the same time.  I was using slot 1 when only testing one stick, and slot 1 and 2 when testing two sticks. So the expensive Corsair RAM was always getting lots of errors and the infineon got a few errors but always on slot 2, so I thought that it was bad and I got an RMA number from newegg.com.  I then had a friend with a p4 come over and I tested the RAM on his computer and it all worked fine, including the RAM which got over 300 errors each test, so I was sure it was my motherboard, but I still traded him back his Corsair for my 2 Apacer, which I put in alone, slots 1 and 2.  I was curious and ran memtest86 again last night and got no errors at all, for 7 hours. So the cheap Infineon erros, but only slot #2, the expensive Corsair errors a lot, but only on my motherboard, and the cheap Apacer doesn't error at all.  So is this the same problem everybody else has had? Should I keep my motherboard, or should I RMA it?  I really don't want to be without a computer for 7-10 days.  Will it stay stable now or when I plan on getting some a Gig of nice RAM in the future, will I get the same errors?
(NOTE: on memtest86, any error would happen on test 5 of 7, Block move, 64 moves, cached)
I thank anybody at all who posts very much for at least giving their time to my problems

  • I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full. But I have lots of RAM available.  Computer does seem slow and delicate tho.  What's up?  Could my machine be spending SSD space and not RAM?

I just had a pop-up tell me my SSD is full.  I have tons of RAM available. Computer does seem slow and delicate tho.  What's up?  Thanx.

Hello and thanqueue again KW.  I have had power management issues in the past tho they seemed to disappear with a new battery.  But I'll try this before I do the dreaded re-install.  haha.  And resetting the PRAM is something one should do from time to time if I recall correctly.  And it's been at least 3 years since I did that.
So I'll probably try that again.  Thanqueue.
And as I mentioned above, yeah I probably don't even have an SSD, I'd never heard of it before the other night and know I've never purchased one.  So thanx pop-iup for the totally bogus info, tho it's gotten me to this discussion page which is very helpful and I appreciate the suggestions.
In its favour, the machine will shut down normally when I'm brave enough to do so.  But it's quite a few moments till all the desktop is restored again when repowered, so I do tend to keep it in sleep mode for days, even weeks sometimes, knowing I'm putting extra wear and tear on it.
But at one point a few years ago, it took 5 minutes just to hear the chime.  It's better now, I hear the chime almost immediately, then it clunks into working mode obviously quite overburdened.  It's a wonder it's still speaking to me!  And I use it fairly heavily without too much problem (tho have some spods and the occassional app crash), have over a million files, I suppose that's not unusual.. it was making duplicate files on its own for a while but I think that's stopped.  hahaha.  etc etc and so on.
But it is very odd to have it, with a battery full of power or even plugged in, just drop out of commission when my back is turned lol for even a few minutes.  There seems to be some misguided trigger at work.  So I'll czeck those power re-sets and see if that takes care of it.
    Domo gosaimashita!

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • 80gb classic crashes computer, get blue screen.

    80gb classic
    Windows Vista
Ipod crashes computer when itunes is running, get blue screen.
A while back my ipod started having trouble playing songs. I would tell it to play a playlist of say 50 songs, it would then freeze for about 30 minutes, and when it would finally start playing, it would be 30 songs into the playlist. I also couldn't get itunes to read it.
So I used itunes restore feature, and then after that, every time it tries to synch to itunes, it would crash the computer, and I would get the blue screen saying that my computer was dumping physical memory. Well nothing gets dumped from my computer when it does it, and the ipod stays the same.
I even tried formatting it manually, having windows fix it, having itunes restore it again, but always the same thing... once it was restored.. BAM computer crashes.
I can have it plugged in no problems, I can run itunes no problem, but when the two are done at the same time, it would crash my computer.
So I looked for other reasons. I needed major updates for vista, so I downloaded all of them, which took a while. And I even uninstalled itunes and re-downloaded and installed. Now what happens is Itunes freezes when it's plugged in, but I can still use all my other windows, just itunes is inoperable while the ipod is plugged in. As soon as it is unplugged, itunes starts working fine again.
I'm not that great with this sort of tech thing, so any suggestions would really be appreciated.

    many thanks, i!
atapi.sys is a Windows OS file ... it's your Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller. So it's plausible that it's either got damaged, or we're looking at a driver issue that is manifesting as trouble with atapi.sys. So we'll proceed on those two fronts to begin with.
Just in case the file is damaged, I think we should try an sfc /scannow. It's not user-friendly on an XP system, but the following document may be of some help (fingers crossed):
    http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
If no joy with the scannow, we'll try making sure your drivers and so forth are up to date. If you've got a name brand PC, head to the manufacturer's website and look for the downloads page for your model. Look for newer versions of firmware for your hard drive, BIOS updates and chipset driver updates (in particular), but now might be a good time to check on things like video drivers, RAID controllers and so forth.
If you've got third-party componentry installed in the PC (like for example, a USB card, or an external drive, or a new internal hard drive), or if you have a home/custom-built PC, head to the websites of the manufacturer's components (in particular the motherboard manufacturer), and check for newer drivers, firmware and BIOS versions there. The following document may be of some assistance with that:
Updating the drivers on your Windows PC
Any joy with any of those measures?

Re: Problems with computer stability using Pr/AE CC. -Computer Specs Listed. SOLUTIONS?
           Peferling
    ==================
Boy, you are not kidding,  I was running both the cloud and CS6, and I was ready to throw in the towel.
I have changed computer's twice now, have a solid state hd, (which I love) with 10 terabytes on externals, I run NOTHING except adobe's stuff on my HD now, and only one version of it, and it runs like a dream.
So, I updated the OS to win 8.1, updated my peripherals,
I dumped CS6 (hated to, but for some reason my 3D won't work on it, it works fine with the cloud) but in CS6 the software was turning it off after adobe's last update.
I've made a virtual machine for my development environments which do not play well with adobe's stuff.
My rule of thumb has always been double what the manufacturer states is required for RAM, but imho, with my current upgrades: upgraded to win8.1, and other peripherals, spent two weeks changing stuff over and it's about 100 times better than trying to run CC and CS6.   - No kidding, the change is astronomical
But for anything PC I'm way over powered, and for Adobe, I'm still underpowered.
Next, I'll just get a mac for Adobe, and stick with my pc's for ms/CentOS.   Too, it seems like since the cloud was initiated Adobe is rolling out the updates faster and changes without warning. The processor/3D issue,  I had no warning on it, just woke up one day and "no more 3d" :S
But I do love the cloud, so, guess there's got to be some dark lining to it. <g>

Sorry for the delay in getting back-something about available time and a 6 month old...Thanks for the info, perhaps you (or anyone else who wants to chime in) can keep this dialogue going.
In terms of background, my iMac is the 20" 2007 version (7,1; MA877LL) with a 320 GB hard drive and the base 1GB of RAM (667 GHz DDR2 SDRAM). I have a 55 GB free right now. I have not yet tried removing/swapping out the memory.
After running the Apple Hardware Test, I throw the following error:
    4HDD/11/40000004:SATA (0,0)
The all powerful google leads me to presume a hard drive problem, although all the earlier symptoms lead me to believe RAM problems.
To make matters worse, now the machine will not boot up, instead getting stalled on the blue screen with various pop-ups referring to apps that failed unexpectedly. When trying to either Ignore, Report, or Relaunch, everything just freezes. I have not yet had the opportunity to try booting in safe mode.
    Thoughts?
    -many thanks in advance!!!

  • Transferring DW license from crashed computer

My old iMac's hard-drive crashed and the folks at the Apple
store were only able to get our pictures and videos off the old
machine. We bought a new iMac and I tried re-installing DreamWeaver
    MX 2004 on the new machine and the installation is successful;
however, it won't open. I looked up the problem online and it says
I needed to transfer the license from the old iMac to the new iMac
in order for the program to work. Which is not possible ... as the
hard-drive crashed and I obviously couldn't do this. Adobe support
will not help on the matter because there is a newer version out
(what horrible customer support!). So, does anyone know how to
transfer the license from a crashed computer? Or have any other
suggestion besides buying the stupid software AGAIN!?

In the activation screen (when the program won't activate),
    look for the
button "more activation options" (or something like that).
    Find the option
to "activate by telephone" and call the number.
I *just* had that exact same experience -- hard crash, new
    machine, couldn't
de-activate on the old machine, and couldn't activate on the
    new machine
because I had reached the limit on number of activations.
I called the number, and I reached a nice Indian gentleman
    who gave me an
authorization number to plug in, and I was back up and
    running.
This was yesterday, so my information is very current.
    Actually, it was
about 10pm last night (eastern time), so you don't even have
    to call during
    any particular business hours.

  • Random crashing computer SOLUTION

Finally a solution to everyone with a randomly crashing computer. A tech needed >4 days to tell us that the LOGIC BOARD needs to be replaced.
I hope you bought Apple Care . . . we were told it will cost $1500. On a new computer, that has had this issue since day one, but nobody could ever solve it.
After numerous trips to tech people, only to be told "It's fine" when it never was - while we had Apple coverage. We aren't feeling a 100% confident with this diagnosis - when surprise, surprise we no longer have coverage.
Buying a new computer actually seems like a more cost effective and reliable alternative. How sad. I remember when Apple was a good product. Now all I see are flashbacks to my days with my "Dell from ****!"

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I agree with CCRDVR. An Apple product specialist once told me that if the problem originally occurred during the warranty period and was not fixed, that Apple would honor the warranty until it was fixed, even if the warranty had lapsed in the meantime. I hope you have a paper trail of attempting to get this problem fixed, as that would clearly document it. But even if you don't, put together a summary of your attempts to have this problem solved and call Apple and ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations. They are an upper tier whose mission is to solve problems and have happy Apple customers. Always be very nice and polite and reasonable, and explain all that you did trying to get this problem solved while under warranty. There is a very good chance that you will get some satisfaction.
    Good luck!

  • New Ram problems with my iMac G5 20' w/iSight

I purchased a 2 gig stick from (4-all-memory) web sight, got it the other day and installed it. I had removed 512MB stick from that one slot and added the new, it ran smooth for 24 hrs just fine, Then yesterday as I was downloading a couple-a shows from iTunes,(my Mac) it frooze up, had the sound that my Hard drive was making sounded like it was taking a ruff trip up a dirt road, makin all kindsa noise. I pulled the plug as that was the only thing that seemed to work to shut down. I tried to start up after a few, took several minutes to warm, then the noise, no screen etc. I then let the sucker cool down, tried again, same crap. I reversed my up-grade back to my 512MB stick and got everything to work kinda like before. My"About this Mac" button dose a restart kinda thing now when ever I try to see "About this Mac"? It shuts down everything few a second, then all comes back on as if just restarted, but never tells me 'about this mac'?
Any coments on what to do, ersuggestions. I would like to try the 2Gig stick again, but I am fearful that my iMac might just throw a fit, like me Ex?
    Thanks

Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer when troubleshooting.
If you have not already done so:
Check the RAM install instructions in the manual that came w/your computer to make sure you installed the RAM correctly.
Boot from your Hardware Test DVD to confirm problem.
If you have Techtool PRO or Deluxe (make sure both are compatible w/your latest OS System) boot from same.
If a RAM problem shows up on any of the above, then you should return the RAM to the manufacturer. Hopefully, the RAM you purchased has a lifetime quaranty.

  • Unending RAM problems

    Hello!
    Specs:
    13-inch, Early 2011
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
My problem started with my 3 beep code, signifying RAM problems. Tried reseating RAM, didn't work. Tried installing 2 brand new Crucial 4GB RAM sticks, didn't work.
Sent the laptop in and had a new logic board put in. The computer would now start up, but now when I close it it won't go to sleep. Also, it will run for about a day or two then start the three beeps from **** again. Each time this happens, I'll switch out the new Crucial RAM with the old Apple RAM, and it will work again, for about a day or two. The smaller Apple RAM actually keeps the system working for longer somehow.
I also installed Trim, I heard that should solve my problem, but it hasn't. Maybe I didn't install correctly?
    Any feedback is much appreciated!

I also installed Trim, I heard that should solve my problem, but it hasn't. Maybe I didn't install correctly?
Have you installed a SSD in your MBP?  If so the Apple Hardware Test error (4HDD/11/40000000: SATA (0,0)) is meaningless.  It will produce this error when there is a SSD installed.
I suggest that you download from the Kelly computing web site REMBER.

Run it overnight so that there are sufficient loops performed.
    Ciao

  • Suspected iMac factory RAM problem, kernel panics?

I've lurked on these forums for a while, and had a mostly problem-free experience with my Mac, but I believe I have some circumstances which warrant creating my own topic. Here's my system specs:
    iMac 21.5, mid 2011
    2.7Ghz Intel Core i5
    AMD 6770m 512mb
    12GB RAM (2 2GB Apple default DIMMS, and 2 4GB Crucial DIMMs.)
OS X 10.7.5 Lion (the product listing in my username was made before the .5 update.)
I have had my mid-2011 iMac for 17 months, and began experiencing random kernel panics about once a day, for the last week or so. At first I suspected it to be an issue with the sound card because most of these panics happened while I was in Skype calls. I ran AHT and everything came up clean: I checked Skype, iTunes and Software Update (no updates were found for any of them.)
Even though AHT passed my RAM, I read up on kernel panics again--and even though my computer had no signs of being slow at the time of the panics, I dreaded that that might be the issue. I ran Rember, a frontend for memtest, with all of my RAM installed, and the computer panicked during the block sequential test. No other programs were running at the time. I have been using the 8GB of Crucial RAM for nearly a year without issues, but I still removed the bottom pair of DIMMS, which turned out to be the Apple-installed RAM. (It is likely that my father switched the Apple sticks to the bottom while helping me install the upgrade.)
I ran Rember again and found that the Crucial RAM passed all tests; since no other programs were running at the time, it leads me to believe the factory DIMMs may be faulty. My plan is to use the computer with only Crucial RAM for a day and make sure no panics occur, then run memtest with only Apple RAM installed; if a panic occurs, then I will know they're faulty.
My iMac has AppleCare, but the nearest Apple Store is about 3 hours away (no AASPs here, rural area.) Is it possible to get in contact with Apple and have them shipme some new RAM, in exchange for the old? Can I contact the store and UPS or mail the computer in for service and have it shipped back? If the RAM turns out to be faulty, should I just replace it with more Crucial RAM?
In case someone can pinpoint the issue as something other than a RAM problem, here's my latest kernel panic log, which occurred during memtest. During all of these panics, I was multitasking (games, iTunes, Skype) but hardware temperatures were never beyond what they usually are under load (Processor below 50c, GPU below 70.) The "BSD process in active thread" has varied from kernel-task to cider, as well as Skype.

Thank you for reading. I apologize for the long post.

Had another kernel panic: this time during Skype, as usual. When the kernel panic occurs, the sound will skip and loop while the alert displays--and it always seems to happen when either me or my contact is speaking. I can be in call for several hours before this happens. The only major contributor to these panics I can see now is my headset.
I am using a Razer Carcharias headset (I know, Razer is starting to fail me), that has no drivers, and standard 3.5mm jacks. The mic doesn't work, as the iMac is only line-in, but that never bothered me because I prefer to use the built-in one. The headset is set as an output device both in Skype and in System Preferences -->Sound. I've gone several days without being on Skype, and still using the headset for iTunes and so on--no panics. But after a few hours of Skype, no matter what I'm doing as long as that's running: panic. Every time.
Some people on these forums have reported issues with panics when plugging in headphones or removing them, but I've never had that sort of problem. The log which I post below makes mention of a razerhid text that did not appear before I removed the mouse. I removed that kext by uninstalling another Razer driver before making this post, and testkext does not show any kext by that name running now.
But I can't figure out why a HID kext or driver would interfere with sound devices. It must be the headset somehow, which greatly disappoints me, as I've used the external speakers in calls for a year without issue.
Others have mentioned fears that these kinds of panics might be an issue with the logic board. I severely hope it's not a logic board issue: because of the wait times with Apple repair, I'd probably have to have my parents drive the machine in, drive back, wait a week, and repeat. This computer is quite literally my livelihood, but I can't ask them to drive two to three hours one way just for that. (Sadly, the only shops in a 50 mile radius that even mention Mac repair are those that have techs, in some cases uncertified, do repairs. Can't void my AppleCare like that.)
I am considering contacting Razer support and seeing if they have any advice on the issue. Here's my latest kernel panic log (ignore the razerhid kext, removed it already)
