Ram question in iMac

I got a 21.5-inch iMac a few weeks back. I bought the base $1,199 model and I would like to upgrade it to 8GB or more if i can afford it. Under About this Mac it says I have 2 free slots. So does that mean if I want 8GB i can purchase 4GB of ram both being 2GB? I'm sorry if im asking a dumb question but I really don't know anthing about this. I was looking at OWC for ram. Can I leave the ram that the iMac already has and add ram by owc? Or will it screw things up? Please let me know. Thank you

You can buy 2 4GB chips and put them in the two vacant slots without any problems.

  • RAM Memory for iMac 27' (Late 2012)

    Hi,
I have read a lot of discussions about what's the best option to upgrae the RAM for the iMac 27' (Late 2012), but I really don't know what should I buy in terms of compatibility.
    Kingston ? Corsair? ,etc...
I pretend to remove the memory that's on my iMac (2x4GB) and install new ones 4X8GB=32GB, so, my question is, which brand should I buy, and also what about the voltage(1.3, 1.5) and latency (CL7, CL9, CL10, CL11...)?
    Thank's

If you will go to either OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial, their sites will help you determine what you need.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/iMac
Use OWC's instructions to find your model identifyer. Their RAM has been tested and is guaranteed.
I would not recommend cheap brands or Value RAM.

  • Is it possible..another RAM question

I was at OWC site and wanted to upgrade my RAM for my iMac 24" (2007 model). I initially thought that my iMac (2007 iMac 7,1) maximum RAM was 4GB. However, to my surprise, OWC listed as 6GB as max. Curious, I went to my local Fry's electronic and picked with a 4GB stick and wow...it worked!! My iMac is now showing 6GB! I do see a faster response. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. So here are my questions: First, is it really true that my Mac is actually seeing 6GB and using all 6GB or is it just showing 6GB but using only 4GB? Also, if one slot can recognized the 4GB, what about upgrading the other slot to 4GB and getting a total of 8GB? Will this work?
Every where I read, even at crucial and apple tech support site indicated that my Mac can only use max of 4GB...but apparently I'm only 6GB now and hope to push the envelope to 8GB. Will this be possible or is my Mac showing 6GB but I'm actually using 4GB and the effect I'm seeing is only a placebo effect? Thanks for all the help guys!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Apple says 4 GB, but it has long been established that both of the Mid 2007 models can use 6GB. It cannot use 8 GB, so do not waste your money.

  • How do i get more RAM in my iMac G4 800?

I'd like to expand the RAM on my iMac G4 800. I read a few discussions and am not quite sure what I can do. Here is what I have and what I want to do:
Have: I have a iMac G4 800 with 512 in the J22 slot and 256 in the J20 slot. I am assuming the J20 slot is the one I can make changes to. Is that right?
Want: I'd like to add a 1 GB DRAM and make my memory 1.5 GB. I realize there is some debate about whether this machine can handle over 1 GB of main memory. So, can I do that?
    Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'm afraid there is no debate: 1GB is the maximum on the 800MHz iMac.
Personally I don't believe that going from 768MB to 1GB is cost effective on this older Mac given that you will have to throw out a 256MB module.
On my iMac G4 J20 is the internal "Factory" slot which is difficult to access; this notation may be different on the 800MHz model.
    Some tips to improve performance:
Quit Safari often; it suffers serious memory leaks that Apple doesn't seem in a hurry to fix and will gobble up your RAM.
Keep your hard disk nice and empty. Once you fill your hard disk above the 85% level you'll start to get fragmentation and the available space for virtual memory is not there.
Use a system maintenance application like MacJanitor (link).
Quit applications when you're not using them.
Have a look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. How much Free and Inactive RAM do you have? If the processor regularly being tasked to 100%? How many Page Outs do you have?
    cheers

  • I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,
    Bear

  • Is the ram in my Imac Al compatible with my macbook Core Duo???

Is the ram in my Imac Al compatible with my macbook Core Duo??? The ram in my Imac is 2x 1GB.
    Thanks,
    KANE

    Hi KANE,
all Intel-Macs, with the exception of the Mac Pro, use the same kind of RAM-Modules .
Specs are: 200-pin DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMMs up to 1.25” in height. The SO-DIMMs must be DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) compliant and must be unbuffered, unregistered, 8-byte, nonparity, and non-ECC.
    So feel free to swap.

  • Urgent RAM Question!!

So I took someones word and I ordered this RAM for my iMac (model: MB323LL/A).
I looked closely at the details after ordering the RAM and I'm not sure if it will work on my computer.
The specifications for my iMac are located here: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP485
The RAM I ordered is this: http://tinyurl.com/4za4kvp
Please someone who has a *_VERY GOOD_* understanding of memory reply.

I had looked at this last nigh late, and thought you had posted an Amazon offer, sorry if my memory isn't working, haven't had coffee yet
Things to look for: system does not boot with the new memory - take it out and try booting on each individual module. Sometimes they do not work together but will individually. System boots but if you look at About this Mac it does not show all of the memory you installed. System boots and gives kernel panic - almost always a hardware issue and after installing memory, most likely a memory issue. System works for a period of time then goes flaky on you, kernel panics, shutdowns, etc. Swap the memory back to the original and see if things work again - means the memory is failing.
Oh, and keep the factory supplied memory. One person on here reported that Apple Care said that while memory is user-upgradable, they will not provide service on a machine unless the memory is as supplied. they don't like diagnosing issues that are not Apple's.
So, just some food for thought.

  • Where do I find ram for my imac 21.5 2009

where do I find ram for my imac 21.5 2009
    Thanks,ed

Crucial.com and macsales.com (Also known as OWC) are highly recommended sources for Mac ram. Its easy to find the correct RAM through either of them, and both guarantee 100% compatibility with your Mac.

Other RAM brands may or may not work correctly with a Mac.

  • VERY SPECIFIC RAM QUESTION (not answered in prior topics)

I have a very specific RAM question. I've been pouring through the discussions and I see TONS of stuff about the proper way to upgrade RAM. I've done that before without incident, but here is my dilemma:
I'm using the 3.0Ghz, 8-core, MP currently with 8GB of the 667Mhz RAM (8x1GB). The memory is all matched from OWC and I have had no problems.
I just bought 16GB of new RAM from OWC (4x4GB).
I'm going to remove all 8 of the current 1GB DIMM's, and place two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser A, and two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser B. That will give me 16GB's in matched pairs on slots 1 & 2 of both riser A and B.
My question is this: Should I install two of my old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser A, and two of the old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser B (for a total of 20GB's)?
I've read that having all 8 slots filled = better performance but I'm not sure the mix of 4GB DIMM's and 1GB DIMM's.
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks So Much,
    Tom

Optimally you want matched quads in each Riser. However, Bare Feats did some memory benchmarks that you might wish to read regarding memory performance versus different configurations. As for proper installation see the following:

Bonjour, je voudrais augmenter la ram de mon imac de 2009. Comment puis je me le procurer et combien coûte les différents models? Merci.

Nous avons besoin de savoir si l'ordinateur est un début 2009 ou plus tard. S'il vous plaît regardez dans votre manuel du propriétaire et il vous dira combien de RAM qu'il peut utiliser. si vous ne trouvez pas votre soutien clic manuel dans le coin supérieur droit, puis cliquez sur le lien manuels.

  • Best place to purchase RAM for my iMac

I would like to upgrade the RAM on my iMac and I am not sure where the best place is.

And steve hit the nail on the head as well.
I've gotten correct and quality RAM from
resellers on the west coast (USA) online
when I know the proper specifications...
oempcworld.com did OK with three Macs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Upgrading RAM for an iMAC  Intel Core i5 2.8 GHz Quad Core - Late 2012 (I'm guessing).

I have an iMAC Intel Core i5 2.8 GHz Quad Core - Late 2012 (I'm guessing).  I am trying to upgrade the RAM of my iMAC and I am not sure how to go about it. Running on OSx 10.6.3
This iMac has 4 slots - Currently my RAM is using 2 slots with 4 GB so I have 8 GB right now.
The speed is 1333MHz. Now I have some RAM that could get to 32GB but the 4 RAM chips speed is
    1866 MHz.
Would it be possible to swap my old RAM (8GB) 1333MHz for the new 1866mhz RAM? even with the difference in speed?  The RAM is from Crucial.
If possible I can try and swap the RAM if I get inside my iMAC.

If you are really running 10.6.3, then you do not have a 2012 machine. Please check to see if this is yours (it's a 2010):
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i5-2.8-27-inch-alumin um-mid-2010-specs.html
It also mentions the exact specs of the RAM. I would only use the RAM supported by Apple; using the higher speed rated RAM will not result in higher speed.
