"Ram" ramifications

OK kids.  Here is the question of the day.  Mushkin PC3200 "black 222"
vs Corsair PC3200 XMS C2.  Give me your thoughts.  I have both.  I have run all sorts of benchmarks and in reality there are minor differences.
Also this "slot 1 and 3" thing.  Someone explain that to me.  In my A7N8X Deluxe it states in the Manual to use slots 1 and 3.  It does not say that in my K8T Neo MB.
So what's up.  The more opinions the better....
Thanks
mrmuse

Well if you hang out here long enough you get to peice the story together a bit.
AMD checked and recommended a list of RAM. (Most of which you can't even find now as it is gone from the market or not available in most places.) No additional testing has been posted if it was even done.
Motherboards come with 1.0 or 1.1 Bios and those do not take advantage of newer timings that would allow newer sticks to work straight out of the box.
Not all RAM of the same make and model work with the same timings. Sometimes parts on those sticks are changed and not always for the better. That has to do with what the RAM manufactures have on hand to build sticks with.
Some RAM chips have inferior timings and won't work with the A64 series as they cheat to get timings. The memory management unit is built into the CPU in our case so it is not the motherboard that matters. However some changes to bios effect those timings to be relaxed enough to allow some thinmgs to work better. See 1.2 Bios Update.
Yes there is a lot to this and that is likely why no one can explain outright exactly why you have seen difficulties. 1.2 Bios does not fix it all and some things may never be fixed as it is up to RAM Makewrs to build stuff that works with our specs.
If you find something that won't work then try another brand or model. Maybe your luck will improve. I feel bad for you but I am not sure anything else will do the trick.

  • Adding mismatched RAM on MacBook Pro ?

    Hi,
I have a 2.0 Ghz MacBook Pro with the 512 MB Stock RAM that it came with.
I would like to add 1 Gig of Mac Compatible Corsair or other branded RAM.
Do I have to install matched RAM in this computer ?
Does it matter if the RAM I buy matches the brand of RAM already installed or if it is the same amount ? I am honestly really confused about this.
Ram prices are really low in Canada right now so I want to take advantage of this but at the same time, want to make sure that the $84.00 CDN that I am planning to spend on this extra 1 Gig will make a siginficant or at least noticable difference in my MBP performance.
Thank you for any recommendations or suggestions you may have.
    Kallum

    KMoorehouse,
First, I'll tell you that all of the Macbook Pros use the same memory: 667MHz DDR2 SODIMMs. And, had I not noticed that you are in Canada, I would have recommended RAM from the same place tat the other poster did. In fact, I will provide two links:
    For a 1 GB module
    For a 2 GB "kit" (2 X 1 GB)
I purchase all of my RAM from this company, and I have been doing so for several years. I have never had a RAM-related problem, and they provide very good service.
I realize that there may be difficulties for you, being in Canada, and I do not know what those difficulties might be. If you can order from them with no problems, it might be worth it. Give them a call to find out what the ramifications would be ordering from Canada.
Going to 1.5 GBs will provide a world of difference for your MBP, if that is all you can afford. 512 MBs is simply not enough even for just OS X; add an application or two to the mix, and your MBP's performance will be really poor. Even going to 1 GB by adding a second 512 MB DIMM would provide significant benefits, and it would additionally enable Dual-Channel mode. I think that the additional benefit of having 1.5 GBs will be greater, however.

  • Easiest speedup--more RAM, or faster HD?

I recently got a stock 2GHz C2D Macbook--80 GB 5400 RPM HD and 1 GB memory. If you could only upgrade one, which would see a better speed boost: up the memory (to 1.5 GB using unmatched RAM), or install a 7200 RPM HD (remain at 80 GB)?
95% of the time, the speed is great, but after awhile switching between apps (especially heftier apps, like iPhoto and iTunes and very especially bringing these apps up via FrontRow), causes very noticeable delays. The login screen to get out of screensaver then takes awhile to come up as well.
Not too surprised to see pageouts (via MenuMeters) numbering in the hundreds of thousands, but my old dual-533 MHz PowerMac G4, with only 768 MB of RAM, didn't seem to choke as bad between iPhoto, etc. I don't regularly run PPC apps on my MB, though I do expect a speed/response penalty after starting one up.
So is my amount of RAM "okay" if I just up the speed of the HD?
One other difference: I always shut down my G4 when done so it starts fresh next time; my MB I just sleep/wake, so RAM isn't allowed to clear and virtual memory isn't flushed.
    Comments and experience welcome, thanks!
    Macbook 2 GHz C2D   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB RAM

If you are getting lots of pageouts, the correct solution is more RAM, or running fewer RAM-hungry programs at the same time.
Your ratio of pageouts to pageins should be less than 10%. If it is greater than that, you are working the virtual memory system too hard.
You probably should have 2 Gig RAM, but going to unmatched 1.5 will be a start. Eventually match up another 1 Gig DIMM.
When you run Acitivity Monitor, look to see what PPC stuff is running. If you can replace all the legacy PPC stuff with Intel or Universal apps, your memory will go farther, because you won't have the additional overhead of the Rosetta emulation layer running.
Widgets are often RAM hungry, too. Watch out there.
Since you are currently working your Virtual Memory system too hard, I'd recommend rebooting more often, to clear stuff out. (Once Rosetta is started by running a PPC app, it will stay in memory until reboot.)
Over-working the VM system will lead to premature Hard Disk failure, in addition to bad performance and lousy battery life.

  • Need help: should I get 8gb or 16gb Ram memory?

    Hi,
I'm about to purchase the new macbook pro retina.
I'm going for the standard 13inch model with 256gb ssd.
Standard there are 8gb of ram memory. But I wonder if I should upgrade to 16gb?
I study graphic and digital media. This mean Photoshop, illustrator, indesign Will Be frequently used. Sometimes all together.
Together with that iTunes and internet (many tabs) will be used.
So would I upgrade to 16gb?
I choose the 13 inch version because of mobility.
    Any help is appreciated.

Have a look at this Macworld test from last May, especially the Photoshop test: http://www.macworld.com/article/2034655/lab-tested-the-ramifications-of-addition al-memory-on-a-mac.html
It might also be helpful to look at the AnandTech site, which has comprehensive reviews of the earlier versions of the computer you are considering and is likely to have a review of the latest MacBooks within a week or so: http://anandtech.com
While I understand your preference for the 13" form factor, the advantage of the quad core processor in the 15" is not insignificant. I assume that you will be able to use the 13" with an external display. If not, I think that you may find the 13" screen smaller than desired for the kind of work you have in mind.
    Cheers

  • How big a difference will 2 gigs of RAM make compared to 1?

I'm definitely upgrading my MacBook to at least a gig of RAM when I get it, but I am thinking about upgrading to 2. Unfortunately, even after-market RAM is rather expensive in 1GB modules.
My question is: Will I see any major differences in performance between the 1 and 2 gigs of RAM while playing games with similar requirements to Apple's "Intermediate Gaming" games such as UT2004?
What about a scenario of running iTunes, several web pages in your favorite web browser, some sort of filesharing app, one or two IM clients (Adium and Skype/Gizmo), and the odd number of little background apps? How about on Leopard, or even on <insert name of cat to be 10.6>?
Sorry about the pummeling of questions :P

    Elispiro,
Normally, I recommend 1.5 GBs for any Mac that will be "put through its paces," as gaming does. Having this amount of RAM allows for plenty of "Inactive" physical memory, which is the figure that provides a big speed boost.
You see, having enough RAM to avoid excessive "swaps" while you are using your applications provides speed boost #1. This is the most important reason to upgrade RAM, and it happens at around 1 GB. Speed boost #2 will be delivered by having a bit more than this 1 GB threshhold, through the use and maintainance of a large amount of "Inactive" memory. This memory contains code and data for applications that have quit, but might be launched again in the near future, thus speeding the availability of these applications to a great degree. 1.5 GBs of RAM provides this boost in most circumstances.
As I say, this is what I normally recommend. For owners of the new Macbooks (and Macbook Pros), however, there is another consideration. If you install memory in "matching pairs" of RAM modules, the RAM bus on the new machines will operate in "Dual-Channel" mode. This mode allows the DIMMs to be accessed simultaneously, on the same clock cycle, thereby increasing the total memory throughput.
For the Macbook Pros, this is a minor speed boost. On the Macbooks, though, it is reported that this small boost really helps with the "integrated" graphics. Since the integrated graphics processor must share main memory, this Dual-Channel mode becomes very important. Especially true of you want to play any games
So for you, I recommend going directly to 2 GBs. This is the only configuration that will give you every posssible speed boost that additional RAM will provide. It need not be as expensive as you might be thinking. a 2 GB "kit" for your Macbook is less than $200 US on this website. I'm don't know the ramifications of purchasing/shipping from Canada, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

  • Mixing RAM Modules

Several weeks ago, I replaced my 256 MB RAMs with 2 1 GB modules in a late 2005 G5. They seemed to work fine, though my GPU seemed to be running a bit hotter. I just installed an additional 2 GB bought from OWC, and also added back the 2 original 256 MBs to bring my total to 4.5.
Looking in System Profiler, I see that my original 256s and the latest 1 GB modules are PC2-4200U-444, as specified in the online compatibility guide. I see the I GB modules from my first upgrade are PC2-3200U-288.
I bought them at a local shop- for way too much money, by the way - and was told that the number printed on them was wrong and they were compatible with my model. Is that right, or this a problem?
    Thanks

Hi! The PC2-4200 modules are the correct ones and you shouldn't run anything slower. You can run faster ones but you shouldn't run slower ones or mix speeds. And if the computer sees them as the slower ones then most likely they are! Tom

  • Mixing RAM Modules (1gig + 2gig = 3gig)

    Hello,
I am about to buy a Mac Mini and I am on a tight budget. The one thing I want to do for sure is upgrade the memory, but I'm in a quandary of sorts given my budget. The retailer where I want to buy the Mini from only sells the appropriate RAM for the Mini in 2gig modules. So here's my question: I know it is possible to mix the stock 1gig stick with a 2gig stick to get 3 gig of RAM total, but will it be worth it to me? I realize that the best configuration would be to slap in 2 2gig modules in and just be done with it, but with 3gig, would I be appreciatively shooting myself in the foot and killing the machine's performance, or wouldn't I notice? I need to have the memory installed at purchase because I am physically handicapped and adding the memory myself is out of the question. And after researching how to replace memory on the Mini, I wouldn't have the courage to ask anybody I know to attempt to do it after buying it. Is mixing RAM modules a good idea?
    Thanks in advance.
    Malcolm

Nope, I am not confused, There does have generation between Mac mini model. Maybe not official, but we all know. Check About This Mac ---> More Info ---> Model Identifier : Macmini2,1 (That means, 2nd generation)
    Macmini 3,x (means 3rd generation I supposed)
And the 3rd generation doesn't support Dual Channel, referred to Crucial.com

  • Mixing RAM modules on a 800Mhz machine

I have a new Mac Pro. 800Mhz. I want to install more memory but n find any 800Mhz 2Gb modules for sale as yet.
I have the option of installing 667mhz modules.
Will this cause a problem mixing 800Mhz and 667Mhz modules?

You posted your question in the wrong forum. This forum is for pre-G3 Macs. You should repost in the Power Mac G5 forums @ http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=108
That said, this will probably answr your question.
You can't use a processor speed lower (667Mhz) than that specified (800Mhz). Plus there are other restrictions. See *How do you upgrade the RAM in the Mac Pro? How much RAM of what type does it support?*

  • I have a brand new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM and 256 gb SSD where the screen flickered abnormally and got dead all of a sudden while uploading a photograph in FB. Can anybody help?

I have a new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM, 256 SSD and use Mavericks OS. It is still under waranty period.
Just few days ago while I was uploading a photograph in facebook, the screen started flickering abnoromally. I tried using the escape button but nothing was working so switched off by pressing the power button.
After few minutes I tried to switch it on but my system never waked up. Called up the Apple Support, did SMC and PRAM but nothing worked. Then I was advised to take it to Apple's authorised service centre.
At the service centre the engineers diagnoised and then said that the MLB/mother board needs to be replaced. Had waited for six-long days and today they had replaced the MLB/mother board. Now, the system came to life but nothing has booted. The screen goes white and a '?' question mark icon keeps on flickering.
After thoroughly diagnoising it the engineer said that now the problem is with the SSD and the worse thing is all my important documents and photographs etc are no more there. And I don't have a backup of the same!
While Apple Support contact centre is assuring they would replace any other parts if found faulty, but I feel differently. First, the MLB/mother board was changed now they say it is SSD problem - so if the SSD too is replaced there are possibilities of more faults coming up. All I can see and feel that this particular machine has turned out to be architectually deffective that calls for immediate replacement.
Right now I am using a friend's windows pc to write this mail.
Feeling completely miserable - all my expectatations gone after investing in such an expensive machine, loss of all my data, wastage of time and energy and to top it all affecting my daily work.
Can anybody please advise what shall I do?

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

Find out how to remove or leave offline for both Sophos, and Little Snitch.  You only need to examine for viruses when you get attachments from unknown sources, and need to check before you open them.  Little Snitch is only useful if you use any peer2peer software, which you should avoid anyway.

  • How much RAM can my Macbook Pro hold MAX?

Can my Macbook Pro hold a MAX of 8GB or is it just 4GB? I'm getting different answers online and I'm a little annoyed at this point. My computer specs currently are:
    15 inch Laptop
MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Got my computer in 2009.
At Crucial.com it says it can hold up to 8GB when I select my computer processor speed from their list, but I noticed it saying DDR3 (and I don't know what that means to be honest). Here's the link:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=7F3A5584A5CA7304
To the best of my knowledge I selected the correct computer, which I own, from their list.
Under "About This Mac", on my computer, it says DDR2 for the memory, on Crucial.com it says DDR3. As a result I'm confused and will that cause problems?
I'll be getting my RAM kit from Crucial.com, so do I buy the 4BG kit, because that's all my laptop can handle, or is it OK to get the 8GB kit, which says DDR3?
I do a lot of video and audio, so I would like to get my RAM up to 8 GB if it will.
    Thanks

One more question friend....You've been so helpful
Will these two sticks work together on my machine?
    2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=B54C51B4A5CA7304
    along with a...
    4GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-CT51264AC800-200-pin-SODIMM-PC2-6400/dp/B001RB21JE
So these two would add up to 6GB total. Now the ONLY DIFFERENCE that I see is the 2GB stick is PC2-5300(667Mhz)speed and the 4GB stick is PC2-6400(800Mhz)speed. I understand that my machine won't run at the 800Mhz speed that the PC2-6400 stick is designed for, cause my machine says 667 under the memory info. From what I read online, it's ok to put a higher Mhz stick in there, it will just cap at 667Mhz speed? But.......both sticks are DDR2, which is right for my computer, but will the 667 MHz with a 800 Mhz be a huge no-no to run together? At this point I think that is my main concern! If I can't do this, than I think I'll have to go with the 2x2GB kit for 4GB total, but I REALLY would like to run 6GB.
    Shew.... :P
    Thanks again!

  • At a loss, getting RAM error

Have hesitated to post because I am so ignorant but I don't know what else to do. I apologize in advance if I am not posting correctly. Long story short, I have run CS for years with no problems. I am now running it on my iMac and my MacBook Pro. No problems with the latter. But with my iMac, it keeps telling me that there was an unexpected error due to insufficient RAM and then without further ado, it closes. I have copied the report it would like to send to Apple (which is in some ancient lost tongue from my point of view).  What I have done is I have spent a couple of nights researching fonts because there was so much discussion of font problems. I am not saying I don't have any but at this point, I only have validated fonts on my system so if that is the problem, it is going to be hard for me to take that anywhere. Then I double checked my Preferences for performance (in case the error message actually meant what it said. It told me I had 2100 mb available, recommended I allocate between1155 and
1512 so I gave it 1575. I hope no one falls off their chair and hurts themselves if I ask if I could be giving too much RAM? The error message says not. Sigh.
I used to spend my nights just playing with Photoshop, nothing serious, simply a very enjoyable hobby. Now it is a nightmare. I guess I could just jettison the iMac and go for the notebook but there are some reasons for wanting to use the desktop (not the least of which is I feel like I should be able to! having paid for it and CS5). I didn't have any problems before Snow Leopard-- whatever cat was prior worked just fine. Didn't have CS4 problems either but don't know what hates what-- is CS5 the problem or is Snow Leopard? Again, running both on MacBook Pro with no problems. Another sigh.
Can anyone help or should I just take a pill and call myself in the morning?

how much ram do you have installed
try allotting 50% in Photoshop preferences
try running Disk Utility> Repair Disk
    and Repair Pernissions
    run OS software update
    run Adobe update
    run Cocktail OSx
    remove all 3rd-party plugins
try creating a new User account and testing
if you added new ram lately remove it
if it doesn't work at that point i would suspect a bad install
but Adobe employees may be more specific if you stay tuned...

  • Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse

Can anybody please help? I have a T61 that came with 2Gb RAM (1GB + 1GB) and I recently purchased another 2GB chip. The problem is that after installation I had a total RAM of 3GB (1GB + 2GB), the Windows Experience Index score actually decreased!  It went from 3.5 to 3.1!!
Also, under the category Memory (RAM), the score remained unchanged at 4.8!! Should this have at least increased? Also, I am not noticing any improvements in performance.
Is there something that I haven't done or is there anything I should do after the installation? And yes, I did refresh/update from index score.
Please don't tell me I need to buy a new notebook!!!
    Thanks

Part of the problem is that with two differents sized DIMMs you lose the Dual Channel mode feature of the RAM, so the effective throughput of the RAM would be lowered compared to the two 1GB modules that operated in dual-channel.
If possible I would suggest 2 x 2G modules for a total of 4GB or if you can afford it 2 x 4G modules for a total of 8GB this will keep the dual channel mode active and the RAM performance optimal.

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)
    Roger
