RAM replacement for Ibook Clamshell

Hi,
I have just bought an Ibook G3 clamshell (300mhz) for my boyfriend.
After having updated from OS9 to OS10.3, I find myself with no memory left to install other programs.
I know how to replace the ram for this model but I'm not sure what model or what capacity to choose as different websites contradict themselves.
Does anyone around here know?
Thanks in advance!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
What is the hard drive capacity, and how much space remains available on it?
Do you have the original system CDs that came with the iBook when it was new?
They would include Mac OS 8.6.
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/stats/ibook.html
You didn't say anything about having updated the firmware on the iBook, and that needs to be done before upgrading to Mac OS X. You have to do the firmware update from Mac OS 9.1 installed on the computer's hard drive.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395?viewlocale=en_US
(Maybe a previous owner updated the firmware.)
With sufficient hard drive space and Mac OS X 10.3.9, you should be able to use Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac:

Replacing the hard drive is not an easy thing to do:

  • Spell Checking on AppleWorks 5 for iBook Clamshell (original) Tangerine

I am a first time Mac user. I am using an iBook clamshell Tangerine color. I can't seem to work the spell checking in the Appleworks 5.0. I click onto it from either the toolbar or in the menu and it does not allow my select the document I want spell checked. Does anyone have a solution? I love my unit, it is so retro but a little antiquated. Help!!!
iBook (original) Clamshell Tangerine   Mac OS 9.2.x   Refurbished unit

Before you update your RAM and OS you may want to verify what your firmware is. You need to have a firmware of 4.1.7 to be able to use a 512mb ram stick as well as increase funtionality in OS X, see this article....
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128
This update (if you need it) must be done on a Bootable OS9 drive, NOT the cd's.
If you need help confirming your firmware in OS9, please post back. If I can help I will try and post back then.
    Hope that helps...

  • How to replace an iBook (clamshell) handle?

I have searched the web without finding any how-to info on replacing the handle of an iBook (clamshell). Does anyone know a source for this information, or can anyone tell me how to do it?
    Thanks!
    Key Lime iBook 466MHz

I think you need to follow these directions for replacing the display. In the last step replace the handle instead of the display.

  • Download iTunes 1 for iBook "Clamshell G3"

Is there like a website where I can download an older version of iTunes (like iTunes 1) for my clamshell iBook ?

It really looks like Apple has pulled all the links for anything that old.  They do list iTunes 2.0.4 which is actually for OS9, but the download link for that is broken.  Otherwise the nearest I can find is iTunes 7.5 which is what I run under OSX 10.4 so I think it may be a biit beyond 10.0.4.  You can write to Apple and ask them but they will most likely just answer you with a bland, "That version is no longer supported and no longer available."  If you're really determined then let me know and we can maybe find another solution.

  • Word Processor for Ibook Clamshell G3

Is there a word processor I can use with my Ibook Clamshell. It could be freeware or basic. I need it for memos, notes, letters and plan to write a book. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

WordPerfect is a word processing application. At the height of its popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was the de facto standard word processor, but has since been eclipsed in sales by Microsoft Word. WordPerfect version 3.5e for Mac has been made freeware by Corel, and can be downloaded here http://main.system7today.com/software/wordperfect/wordperfect.html . It is a great, free alternative to Microsoft Word!

  • Requesting guidance on repair versus replace for iBook G4 (2005)

I'm looking for some guidance in deciding to upgrade/repair for my iBook G4, operating Mac OS X 10.4.11. I've gotten to the point where I don't seem to be able to run more than one application at a time (for example be online and listen to music at the same time), download more photos into iPhoto (get an outa short term memory message), or watch most video online. It seems that I can't get the most recent versions of some applications as well, for example can't upgrade to the most recent version of flash player, which rules out online TV. I'm not knowledgeable enough to be able to tell if I should just give up on this old workhorse or not. I'd be totally willing to spend $200 ish and have someone clean things up, delete useless stuff, etc, but I don't even know if that is worth it and I'd just be throwing money away. The only other problems it has is lousy battery (can't really be unplugged for more than 5 minutes) but I can live with that for my purposes. I'm open to suggestions about how to troubleshoot, ie decision matrix for the mostly clueless. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I would strongly recommend upgrading to a newer MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Chances are the hard drive is full (or nearly so), and also getting old, since the very newest iBook is over five years old at this point.
If you start replacing things, you could soon approach the cost of a newer computer.

  • Combo (or Super) drives for ibook clamshell.

Hi, I've had some good success on upgrading ibook indigos with a slot loading Matshita/Panasonic CW-8123 DVD/CD RW drive. I have pictures and some advice if anyone wants to try this upgrade. I saw some good deals on a Matshita/Panasonic CW-8123-C that I believe will work as I think it is just a newer version (I never knew what -B vs -C means, does anyone). I also saw a Pioneer DVR-K05PD dvd/cdrw drive that I believe has been used in Mac Mini...anyone know if this will work in clamshell (with or without Patchburn). And last, can a dvd burner, like panasonic or pioneer superdrive burners work in a clamshell? Any insights appreciated...Rick

You can put a DVD burner in a 300Mhz Clamshell, but it is impossible to view DVDs. Apple DVD player won't accept the 4MB video card (8MB minimum required). The vlc freeware player works, but there are too many skipped frames, you can't hardly watch the scene.
When you want to do a serious tuneup for your tangerine or blueberry - get yourself a firewire logicboard (366 or 466 Mhz), drill a new hole in the appropriate place of the bottom case (if you want to make use of the firewire port). Of course you can also mix colors of the clamshell case, so a graphite, key lime or indigo bottom case with a new logic board will also do the job, that would be much easier.

  • Where can I get a new adapter for my iBook clamshell model M6411?

Hi, my iBook clamshell is a little ancient but in perfect working order.  However, the power cord is completely damaged and emits blue sparks when plugged in, so need a replacement.  Does anyone know where I can get a replacement from?  I tried ebay and have tried several online shops but the ones I have been sent for this model have all had the wrong size end to go into the laptop.
Its an ibook clamshell, blueberry and is model M6411.  The adapter is the 45w power adapter.  Can anyone help me please?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It looks like this one should work:
    http://computerlogin.com/sales/productfilePHP/Y_Apple_Clamshell/200/Y_Apple_Clam shell_z_0033.php
I'm not familiar with that seller. Other World Computing has a replacement adapter:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/ACADPTG3/
It's more than double the price, but I'm sure that they are a reputable merchant.
Likewise, iFixit is a known seller:

  • Maximum installable ram for ibook g4 800mhz?

i get conflicting answers...can i install 1g of ram into this thing?

According to this link in the iBook G4 developer note, the iBook G4 800 MHz has a single RAM slot that can accept a 512 MB SO-DIMM for a total RAM of 640 MB.
Crucial.com and 18004Memory.com seem to agree that 640 MB is the maximum memory for that iBook.
The information in KB 302333, iBook memory (RAM) guide is confusing. I would be willing to bet that the writer of that article made a mistake.
However... if you want to experiment, you could purchase a 1 GB module and try it out. Trying it shouldn't hurt the RAM or the iBook. The iBook either will or won't recognize the additional RAM. If you do try this, please report back with the results.

  • Replacement keyboard for iBook G4 (M9419LL/A) 1.2GHz, 14"

I've seen three different P/Ns listed for iBook keyboards:
    922-6637 (Late 2004)
    922-6189 (Early 2004)
922-6913 (where does this one work)
I'm having difficulty locating any 922-6189 keyboards.
    Does P/N 922-6913 support my (early 2004, M9419LL/A) G4, 1.2GHz, 14" iBook?
    Thanks!

Hi and welcome, I looked at some of the more popular repair and part houses and it appears that all three are reconized as replacements for the iBook G4 early 2004 model. It might be just a slight color or transparency thing. You could do some more searching by just google-ing 922-6189.
Here is a offer from ebay:

  • How Can i get iTunes for My Ibook Clamshell Blueberry Mac OS 9.0 besides Ebay

Hi im The Son Of the Creator Of Gizmosapien, a podcast made in garageband and my internet is out im tethered to my iphone 5c and i dont have a airport card for my ibook so How Can i get iTunes for My Ibook Clamshell Blueberry Running Mac OS 9.0 besides Ebay? Please Help.
    Sincerely yours Son Of Gizmosapien.
    P.S. i have a Macbook Air 2011.

Sadly the iTunes Store was not released until Mac OS X. You'll need Mac OS X 10.1 and iTunes 4 minimum to get to the iTunes Store on your iBook G3 and the ability to download any podcasts from the store.   Since Mac OS X 10.1 wasn't that stable, and few software titles exist for it, I recommend upgrading to a minimum of 10.3.9 which supports iTunes 7.7.1.
Your Blueberry iBook may or may not be compatible with 10.4, as this tip explains:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
If you can get 10.4, you can get iTunes 9.2.1.
You will not be able to sync your phone with the iBook regardless of Mac OS X version.
Your iBook is too old to install an Airport Extreme card, so it can't securely hook up wirelessly to your wireless network.  You'll want a ethernet WiFi bridge that supports a minimum of 802.11g to hook up to the iBook via ethernet.  An Apple Airport Extreme base station can act as one as well via its LAN ports.

  • Re: Max RAM for iBook G4

    hello,
I am trying to find out the answer to the same question i.e. how much RAM can I add, and what do I ask for when buying RAM. also, can I buy from 3rd party vendors? If yes, which vendor/model# to ask for? I think apple stores will only provide upgrades for current models and not the one I bought in 2005.
another q: what applications will adding ram enable me to use -that are not usable otherwise?
specs of my ibook are given below. I saw memory configuration, it says 512MB built in, and 1 DIMM slot empty.
    thanks

    hello,
i am looking for an used iBook clamshell.
let me know bye tino thanks in advance ciao

I have the free version of this app that limits you to a 5MB file, but it does work. It requires iOS 3.1. I'm not sure how well the paid version works or what the limitations are.

  • RAM for iBook G4 (early 2004) - PC2100 or PC2700??

    Hi,
    i want to add 1GB RAM in my iBook G4 (early 2004) 1.2GHz 14''.
Which i found out can handle PC2100 (and is PC2700 compatible) according to this doc.
Which one you recommend, PC2100 or PC2700? Any diference?
So can i buy any RAM with the following specification?
    1GB RAM PC2700 (or PC2100) - DDR 333 SO-DIMM - 200pin
    thanks in advance
    iBook G4 1.2GHz 14'' (early 2004)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   256RAM - 60 GB

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Both will work. There's no advantage to using PC2700 as it will run at PC2100 speed. Go with the least expensive of the two.
