RAM slot broken / plastic tabs on RAM slot broke off

I was a little rough when I installed my RAM and broke the plastic tabs/locking mechanism on my RAM slot. A RAM card can still fit in the slot but it just doesn't lock in. I'm considering these options:
1) keeping the RAM in position with a tiny piece of electrical (or other heat resistant) tape. And I could check on it every few days to see if it melts or anything.
2) having a technician go into the inaccessible RAM slot and just upgrade that. Is that possible? How much would something like that cost?
or
3) installing a new logic board, which is what one MAC store diagnosed for me. But that would cost $575 (part) + $100 (labor) which I'm very reluctant about because that is way too much money for me.
If the tape method seems worth a try, I'd love to do that since it's the easiest and cheapest. Any advice would be great. Thanks so much.
Amy

I broke the tabs by removing the ram chip after trying to force it. In the set up guide that came with the computer the instructions failed to mention that the clips should be in the open position before installing. I bought some "cold Weld" like a two part epoxy and glued the composite clips right to the stainless steel "wing" of the clip. It seemed to work just fine. the chip clipped in place but system profiler does not recognize it at all.

  • RAM is not showing up, is slot broken?

I have a macbook pro mid 2009 running Lion (upgraded twice). Right now, there are two sticks of 4gb RAM in the computer, however, if I go to about this mac, system profiler, or activity moniter, they all show that I have only 4gb, while I should have 8 (photoshop is running slower than it should, so obviously one stick is not being used.)
After testing a few times, I have found:
The not functioning slot is the bottom slot, If I try to start up my computer with a stick of RAM in there only, my macs screen stays dark and beeps periodically along with the "sleep" light flashing. However, if I just use the top slot, my computer works fine.
I know its not the RAM sticks themselves because i've also tested with 1 and 2 gb ram, so I suspect my ram slot is broken somehow. It looks fine, the ram goes in and everything, but obviously something's wrong.
I ran hardware test and it said everything was fine, but still only showed 4 gb total ram and told me theres nothing in the other slot.
So is my RAM slot just disconnected or something/broken? Can it be fixed? thanks

My suggestion is to take it to Apple to get a quote for fixing the bottom slot.
It might cost a lot and they might suggest that they should change your logic board since it's built in.

  • Lenovo G580 2nd Ram slot broken

My laptop was preinstalled with 4gb and recently I brought a new 4gb ram to add to the computer but as I inserted it in the 2nd slot it still detects it as 4gb. I tried numerous times and also tried swapping them to find out and I know it isn't the new ram because Windows detects it on 1st slot but it's only when I put a ram in the 2nd slot that it has errors. My Windows is 64 bit so it should be able to use more memory. I don't know whether it could be the snap-in or something is wrong with the memory in the hardware. Could I get this fixed from a store or some remedy to get it to read?

    Solved!

Nevermind everyone. I feel so stupid right now. Turns out after hours of messing around with the ram slot I forgot that I needed to actually push down the ram into the slot rather than just inserting into place. I solved the problem myself so it turns out it wasn't a bad slot after all.

  • Broken Retaining Clip / Stuck RAM Card

Hi. I have a Compaq Presario C500, and tried to upgrade the RAM. Due to my clumsiness, one of the retaining clips for the existing memory card broke off, and the card refuses to budge. I took the computer to Micro Center, and they said they couldn't (wouldn't?) do anything with it. Any suggestions or ideas welcome!

Not to worry. I broke mine too. I agree that they are made to break as it took so little pressure to do it. I'd think they are there mainly to prevent unseating the board during transport or vibration. I figured I'd just make sure it was seated well anytime I had to open the case.

  • Creative HS-1200 - Broken Plastic Part - Can I get this replaced?

    Hi,
I bought a Creative HS-1200 a few months ago, and the plastic housing that connects the headband to the metal frame for the earpieces has broken.
Just to be more specific, I mean the rectangular box that the metal framing slides through to allow you to adjust the size of the headphone. There are three screws in each one (the third is inside -- I can see it since mine broke), and it looks like the the small holes they screw in to just broke off such that the pieces can no longer stay together, i.e. I can't just screw it back together.
Would it be possible to get replacement parts somehow? I could screw it back together myself. Or if not, I can also send it in for warranty repair -- would this be covered?
As a temporary solution, I wrapped a piece of tape around the rectangular housing, and it'd holding together okay. Everything still works, I just don't want it to fall apart.
    Thanks!
    Andy

my iphone has broken and i cant get my photos off icloud?

apparently you can download the tracks one more time free of charge does anybody know how??"
Not true.  You get one and only one download.
In some instances, itunes has allowed another download to a few.  This is not the norm.
You can try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception, but they are under no obligation to allow.
    Hope all goes well.

  • Yoga 2 usb plastic pin broke off.

Today I took my laptop out of my backpack and the usb devinder/plastic middle part was a little outstrestred. I've tried to put my phone in the usb port but ithe plastic devinder broke off. So the usb port is working, but whitout the plastic part you could not use the usb port because of short circuit.
    It looks like:

Maybe this can be still classified as a material defect, because the plastic divider shouldn't be so weak unless it received some serious impact. I suggest contacting your vendor and check whether this can be repaired under standard warranty or not.

  • Upgrading RAM on MacBook Pro 13" to 1 Slot of 4Gb RAM

    Please help,
I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro's RAM. Currently I have 2Gb of RAM, one 1Gb on the top slot and another one 1Gb in the bottom slot. I want to upgrade to 4Gb of RAM so that I only use one 4Gb on the top slot.
    TechSpecs:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,5
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03

I thought if I was only going to use 1 module, I should put it in the bottom slot.
It doesn't matter which slot you put it in. If you put it in the bottom slot, you won't have to remove it first if you decide to add a second one later. But why on earth would you choose not to use both slots now, when you have modules to put in both? 5GB of RAM is better than 4GB.

  • RAM doesn't fit in the Memmory Slot on PowerBook G4 17"

I recently purchased a 512 MB RAM from apple.com for my powerbook G4 17" 1.67 that I bought a year ago. I currently have a 512 MB RAM on my powerbook, trying to upgrade it to 1 G by adding one more RAM to it.
The problem is the new RAM can't fit in on both of the memory slots at the back of the powerbook. The gap on the edge of the RAM is a bit off if compares to the old RAM I have.. this is weird.
    Does anyone have this problem??
This RAM was purchased from apple.com, it couldn't be wrong, but why it can't fit in the slot??? Please help...

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
There are two 512MB modules for the PB 17", and they are different. M9595G/A (DDR333 PC2700) is for the PB 17" prior to October/Nov 2005, and MA219G/A (DDR2 PC2-4200) is for the post-Oct 2005 high resolution screen, dual layer DVD systems. Maybe check the memory against those numbers to see if you have the incorrect memory, or if you look at your system profiler (click blue apple, about this mac, more information, memory) it will tell you what you currently have in your system.

  • Which slot do I take the ram out and put the new in?

I have a 24" iMac 2.33GHz with 2 gigs of ram. On my imac I can only put a total of 3 gigs. So Currently I have (2) 1GB modules each in both ram slots on my imac. So that means I have to remove pone of the 1GB chips and put in the new 2GB module I bought from crucial. So after shutting down the computer, unplugging everything, and setting it on a table, my question is:
WHICH 1GB ram do I remove? The left(looking at the front of the imac), or the right (looking at the front)?
I will be installing it in later tonight so ANY help is greatly appreciated.

It does not matter which module comes out, however I would suggest that you remove the frontmost module simply to make it easier to remember which module has been replaced.
Actually, you will have to take one more step before you replace your ram module.
Take the cover off before you replace the module. It will go a LOT smoother!
Just kidding. You pretty much have it down pat.
Seriously, just remember to ground yourself before touching the ram module and do NOT touch the contacts on the module.
    Hope this helps

  • HT1423 My imac G5 only recognizes one slot after installing 2x2 GB ram

My mac is a early 2009 model running 10.7 software. I realized it was running pretty slow so i decided to upgrade the ram from 2GB to 4GB. After installing it, i checked my memory and it recognizes one slot and not the other.

I swapped them and it showed that the other slot did not recognize it either.
Its the correct RAM for my computer, I contacted the seller and hopefully they would send me another. Thank you!
