RAM slots not working (lower)

Hi folks - I had a problem with my PowerBook running very slowly. Helpful friends suggested increasing the RAM. When I set about doing this I found that there were two 256 Mb cards in the machine.
I replaced them both with 1 Gb cards and the Mac was back to a speedy machine. Not long after thanking my friends, I got a 'fatal message' telling me I must restart the machine. When I did this there was no 'sueme' sound and I was back to only 1 Gb of RAM. The lower slot was empty according to the system profiler.
I went to bed dejected!
This morning I removed both 1 Gb cards put back the 256 Mb cards and the machine booted up as usual with 512 Mb of RAM.
So I have put back the 1 Gb cards and have a 2 Gb machine again.
Does anyone know what went wrong? Will it happen again? Do I need to have the machine looked at by a specialist?
Thank you in anticipation
Dunc

There is a known issue with Powerbooks with the lower memory slot failing, and it sounds like yours may be starting to fail. At one point there was an Apple recall for a small sliver of Powerbook systems to fix that.
The alternatives are to run with 1GB in the upper slot, try one of the internet vendors that say they can fix that (check references), or install a used logic board. I don't believe Apple is repairing Powerbooks anymore, so if you want to buy a used logic board, you'll need to install it yourself, or perhaps an Apple Authorized Service Provider would be willing to do the work.

  • Ram slots not working after CMOS reset

Im using MSI K9N Neo V2 mb, and it was doing fine until i reseted CMOS. Now 3 out of 4 ram slots are not recognized by BIOS nor Windows. Im sure that ram memory is ok, cause ive checked all of it by replacing it between ram slots, and they're only working in slot nr 4.
I know that the MB is old, but everything was working fine, and suddenly went wrong after CMOS reset
    Things i did to fix:
    Updated BIOS
    Msconfig memory uncheck box
    Cleared CMOS with jumper
    Replaced CMOS BAT
Checked if smth's wrong with cpu
Cleared RAM slots with rubbing alcohol
System wont even boot without memory in DIMM 4 (ram slot 4), and BIOS only recognizes memory in DIMM 4
This is really frustrating, because there is no reason for smth to not work all of a sudden
    Any help? Tnx

  • RAM slot not working

    Hey everyone,
I recently bought some RAM for my Mac Book Pro. It came with 1gb, and I bought two 1gb sticks. I put in both sticks of new RAM and my computer would come on but the screen would remain blank. After doing some tests, I found that the lower RAM tray was not working with the old or new RAM stick, and that the upper tray worked with the new and old one. Has this happened to anyone, or anyone have any suggestions on fixes? I tried canned air and it hasn't helped. Currently, I am using the new RAM stick in the upper tray, but would obviously like to take advantage of the lower tray as well.
    Thanks!

Sounds like bad news, I'm afraid, Davide. It is likely that the slot itself is damaged. I have seen situations where RAM "reappeared" in the past after an SMC or PRAM reset, but I doubt this is your problem here. Still worth trying, I guess.
Run the Apple Hardware test (on one of the DVDs that originally came with your computer) too, but I suspect it will either need a motherboard repair or replacement.

  • MSI-7125 K8N neo4f ram slots not working

I have had this motherboard for a little over a year and a few days ago I was on the internet got up for a minute came back and the display was black, I reset the computer and it wouldn't come back on so I disconnected the power cable opened the case and started looking around and couldn't see any physical problems with the board so I took the Video card out, then the ram disconnected the hard drives and optical drives I cleared the CMOS by taking out the battery and leaving it disconnected for 20 minutes, after that time I reinstalled all the components and pushed the power button you could hear it botting up the hard drives and optical drives all the fans were running but no display, So I thought to myself check the ram I started trying different ram slots and there it is the only slot that would work with a single stick of ram was slot #2(purple) and the only slots that would work for 2 sticks were both of the purple slots, I had read the manual and this was very strange considering it say's not to install ram into the purple slots while the green ones were not in use, I am not sure why this just started with no warning I have always use the first 2 slots since I purchased this and never had a problem with this motherboard except for my North bridge fan starting to slow down I replaced it before it quit working other than that I haven't done anything else to it. I would extremely appreciate it if someone could help me out with this problem sorry for such a long post.

Well I've been working on computer's professionally(for place I worked) and privately tried supplemented my income for a while, and most of the problems I seen was either memory related or OS related, I know it wasn't my OS been running fine for a month or so after re-format and just figured it had to be ram related and started checking it out and I was correct . Although I never seen this problem before and that it is aggravating( I just received an email from MSI) and it said I was at the end of my 3 year warranty and that it will cost me $45 bux for them to check it out. I just bought this last year dont see how that is possible. I guess I'll try to redo BIOS to 5.2 and see what happens.

  • RAM Slot Not Working for Macbook 2009 - Looking for Alternatives

Tested RAM slots and found that the second slot (slot closest to interior of computer) is not working properly. Switched both 4gb cards in back slot and the computer would not start up, only would beep....definitely not faulty RAM cards because they both work in the first slot.
I've researched this on forums briefly, the consensus seems to be logic board replacement.
I really don't want to invest more money into this older computer - Macbook Pro mid-2009.
Are there any other troubleshooting options here? I don't think it's the OS and do not have any Time Machine data set up before Mac X nor do I have an partitions set up on an external.
The computer is not terribly slow but when using Final Cut Pro X it tends to lag. All of the specs for my computer fall in the recommendations for using with FC10
Could I get an 8gb RAM card for slot 1?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Does not look like it supports 16 GBs of RAM meaning only 4 GBs/slot.

  • 1.25 GHz Lower Ram Slot not working

I've got a 15" G4 1.25GHz. When I went to upgrade my RAM (I use Samsung) I noticed my lower slot is dead. I don't know how long it's been that way. I see others who've posted the same issue, and all mention that Apple knows about it and has documentation on it. Can someone point me to that? I've had this thing 3 years and had to replace the battery twice and the power adapter 3 times. Now this...not too impressive.

  • Need Help...bottom ram slot not working MBP

I have a mid 2009 MBP, i upgraded the ram to 4gb per slot a couple years ago. I did some troubleshooting and found the bottom slot is now inoperable...
    3 questions:
    1. Any tricks to get that bottom slot working, besides loosening the screws, or using an eraser and then a lead pencil on the connection prongs... which was suggested in ohter threads.
    2. Can i use one 8gb ram in the one operable slot?
    3. Where can i find a replacement part for this problem?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!

!.  No other suggestions to offer.  Bring the MBP in for a free evaluation at an Apple store genius bar.  If it is a simple repair, they may do it gratis.
    2.  Yes.
    3.  Try iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com.  They have parts, prices and instructions.

  • HELP!! NO AIRPORT, SOUND, USB, RAM SLOT NOT WORKING

A couple of days ago i opened up up my 06 macbook pro. i opened it up to clean the airvents bc the laptop was getting crazy hot.so I cleaned out all of the dust and when i put everything back together, it wouldnt boot. i got a black screen and the hd light was on (not blinking, solid). so i took out one of the memory sticks and it booted. but now that it booted it says i have "no built in output" "no airport card installed" and one of my usb ports isnt working and i was thinking maybe something wasnt connected to the LB but i went backed and triple checked adn all of the connections seem fine but idk. could it be possible that the logic board might have shorted out while i left it on the chair when i took it apart?? or it just might be a connection that i might have forgotten?? please help me as i dont have money to buy a new laptop. on the bright side the MBP doesnt get hot anymore.
thanks to anyone who helps me
also watching videos on safari was a problem, and i switched to chrome and it fixed it right up, but all of these problems happened at the same time. (not sure if relevant)
p.s i already tried a smc and pram reset

might be a connection that i might have forgotten??
It's possible.  However, you already stated that you "triple checked."  No harm in checking again incase you blinked too fast the 3 go-arounds.

    Hello
I think on your notebook are missing some drivers.
The SM Bus Controller driver is in the chipset driver package. So try to install it and maybe it works.
The drivers you can find on the Toshiba website.
Have you installed it with a Microsoft disk? The Toshiba recovery disk creator contains all necessary drivers and tools that you need and so this would be maybe an option for you to reinstall the OS.

  • MY iphone ram is not working what can i do?

HI i am ahmad my iphone 5s ram is not working  my iphone is suddenly get down from my hands and get power of plz tell me what can i do

    Hey there Ahmad.altaf27,
It sounds like you are unable to turn on your iPhone 5s. I would recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get the issue resolved:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on),  reset your device.
If there is no video or if the screen remains black, verify that the device has enough charge to turn on:
If you are using an iPad, ensure that it's connected to the USB Power Adapter supplied with the device.
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Why is one of my ram bank not working on my iMac?

I have an iMac purchased in 2008 equipped with one Hynix 1GB PC2-6400-ddr2-800MHZ ram. I have two ram banks. I wanted to upgrade the ram and purchased 2 Crucial DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHZ ram bars. When I insert one of the Crucial bar in the ram bank occupied by the old ram, it works. But when I insert the second Crucial bar in the second bank, I hear the usual starting chime, but then it doesn't go any further and the screen stays black. I tried and re-tried to insert the bar, but always get the same problem. Any idea what causes the problem?

Try with one crucial module and your original Hynix module. Does it start? Swap Crucial modules and try again. If it starts with one module and not the other you got a bad module from Crucial. If that's the case they have a lifetime warranty and great customer service.
If after trying different combinations in different slots you isolate it to a bad ram slot then you're looking at a bigger problem. Believe it or not ram slots can fail, even if they've never been used. The heat inside an iMac alone could cause solder joints to fail and render a slot useless.

  • Gt70 2PC Dominator 895 USB 3.0 Slots not working

Only 1 of my 3.0 USB slots is working with my Toshiba 3.0 External HDD.
The other 2 slots would not work at all with my Toshiba drive. They will only work if I plug my Kingston USB 3.0 Flash drive or any other usb device.
What can I do to fix this?
    Specs:
    Intel i7 4810
    Nvidia  GTX 870m
    Windows 8.1

    Quote from: Pegasus;104522
This is a power issue, your external HDD want use USB 3 speed because connected to a USB 3 connector, but the power provide by the notebook are not enought for the HDD and then you get the disconnect problem. WIth a USB memory no issue because need less power and on USB 2 it work because speed are lower.
So you need a USB cable between your HDD and the NB that can connect to 2 USB connector and then get more power from the NB or use a USB hub with his own power supply, should work.
So 2 of my USB ports have power issue? Because one of them works fine.
    Quote from: hch;104595
You mean those two ports is randomly working some time?
Does the disconnecting problem happen right after you connect the HDD with the notebook? or while you're moving data? (how big is the data?)
Try to use this external HDD to other notebook and change another USB cable for a cross-validation.
Also try to find if there is any driver update for this HDD.
Disconnects when trying to autoplay and while doing anything (even sitting there). Unfortunately I don not have another laptop with usb 3.0 ports. I do however have a desktop and I can say that it works fine there. I check and there are no firmware/driver update for this model.

  • RAM upgrades not working

    Hi all,
I've been wanting to upgrade the two 512 M DIMMS that came with my PowerBook to a pair of 1 G DIMMS.
I purchased a pair of DIMMs from a retailer I found in MacWorld (A1A Computing) and when I tried calling them after my computer kept crashing, it took way too long for them to refer to it as "Customer Service". Ultimately, after contact and returning the pair, they sent a new pair but the wrong type.
After several more interminable attempts to reach them, I finally did and they were reluctant (to put it nicely) to help. I told them I wanted a refund and had to go through VISA to get it. This is not an honorable dealer.
Next, I went to OWC (nice folks) and the first pair they sent didn't work either - crashes, freezes, etc.
In each case, when I restored the original DIMMs all was fine.
I zapped the PRAM, NVRAM, ran the Hardware test (which came back fine) and then ran Rember, which found problems (same as it did with the ones from A1A).
I got a new pair from OWC and immediately ran Rember, which found problems.
I tried removing one of the DIMMs (left one in the bottom slot), reran Rember and it said fine.
Same when I swapped out for the other DIMM.
Then I tried putting the DIMMs, one at a time, into the top slot. Each time, Rember found errors.
I've heard of a bottom slot issue with the 1.25 G PowerBook but never anything about the top slot.
In every case, my system recognized the full 2 G RAM but there are crashes and freezes until I restore the original DIMMs.
Both the originals and the ones from OWC are made by Hynix.
I've saved Rember logs for the new DIMMs in all the tests I described above.
Before returning them to OWC (and resigning myself to having only the original 1 G RAM in my machine), does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone seen the top slot issue I've described?
(Funny that there is no problem at all with the original RAM.)
Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shed on this one.
    Best regards,
    Barry

While just about all Powerbooks are sensitive to the quality of RAM used, the earlier Powerbooks seem to be a little more sensitive than others. While some RAM may meet the printed specs, it may not work with Apple's architecture. The issue is memory bus slewing, where power to the memory bus is modulated to reduce heat and conserve battery power.
When it comes to memory for a finicky Powerbook, I'd recommend Crucial, as they guarantee their memory will work when selected from their memory selector at http://www.crucial.com . You can usually also find a 5% to 10% off coupon on the internet (search for 'crucial coupon'). I've used Crucial (also makes Micron memory) for years with no issues.
Samsung and Kingston (not the Kingston valueram line, though) also typically work well. I've also used these brands in later Powerbooks with no issues.
Hynix memory usually works pretty well in Powerbooks, however, I'm sure they produce a number of different RAMs, like the other memory producers. For example, Kingstons regular memory works well in our Powerbooks, however, their valueram line doesn't work reliably.

  • 3GB RAM upgrade not working

    Hi,
I have a 20" iMac that has 1.5GB (1x1GB 1x512MB, mixed brands) that I need to upgrade to the 3GB max. I bought a 2GB PC2 5300 SODIMM from NewEgg to use with the 1GB one I had already, but it won't work. I've tried switching them around etc with no luck. The 2GB and the 1GB work fine by themselves, but whenever I combine the 2GB with anything, I just get a black screen, no startup tone and a solid white light. I can still return the newegg DIMM so if I have to I will.
    Thanks

Apple recommends that the larger of the two RAM modules be placed in the slot closest to the display.
