RAM Specs

I want to add another 1GB of RAM to my MacBook Pro 2.16 Core Duo. I got this laptop with 1GB of RAM and I was wondering if anyone knew if it was one 1GB card or two 512GB cards. Second, I looked at the specs for the new card that I would have to buy. I notices that Apple says you need a card with DDR SO-DIMM and PC2-5300. The problem here is that the only PC2-5300 cards I found were DDR2 SO-DIMM. Will that make a difference? Thanks.

MacBook Pros never came with DDR ram.
The ram for all MacBook Pros is the same spec DDR2 667 PC5300
To check what you have, click the Apple - top left, then select About this mac and then click the "More Info button"
Click Memory on the left side of the system profiler and it will show you what is in each slot.
Then - depending on whether you need one or two 1gb chips,
Go to either www.crucial.com and go through the ram configurator - it will recommend the correct chip
or here (for the same Crucial chip) if it is cheaper.

or here if you need 2 x 1gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148086
Crucial ram is very high quality and is often supplied by Apple as standard.
There is a support article telling you how to install ram - it is a user installable part.
Cheers.

  • Is it necessary to manually set cpu and ram specs in bios anymore?

    I just ugpraded with a K8N Neo2-F board, and Venice 3500+ cpu.   I didn't do anything in particular with the cpu/ram spec settings in the bios.  CPU-Z recognizes the cpu as a venice core 3500+, using multiplier 11 and fsb clock 200mhz, and the ram is recognized as 1GB pc2700, with assorted clock settings.  The ram is from Crucial and was spec'd out to my old MSI KT4AVL board, so I looked the same ram up again at Crucial.com, but it didn't list the various clock settings anywhere in the specs on that particular chip online.  At least the CAS Latency is showing up correctly in CPU-Z, from what the label on the ram says.  Should I just assume the other clock settings are correct, too?  How can I find out what they should be for my ram?  (I know - I should probably be using Corsair DDR400's like everyone else here, but $ is tight  so I just reused what I had...)

    RAM timings should be set up if you want the best performance. Alot of times the motherboard is able to determine this but not always. In CPU-Z there are two tabs related to memory. One is SPD which should show you the recommended timings for your memory, the other tab Memory should show you what your memory is currently running out. If they are different I would go with what is listed on the SPD tab and put those values in the bios.
    It would definitely be beneficial to upgrade your memory to 2 PC-3200 matched sticks, so you get the speed increase from the increased memory bandwidth and also so you can get dual-channel. I would put memory as the top priorty for the next item to get for the computer.

  • What is the RAM specs on ipad2 and iphone 4s?

    Anybody know what the RAM specs are on these devices?

    According to reports from other sources (Apple does not announce this officially) the RAM is 512 MB on both devices.

  • Can't find RAM specs

    Does anyone know the maximum supported RAM of an HP Pavilion dv7t-4100? I've been Googling and searching the HP website, but I can't find it anywhere...

    Hi: Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02666747.pdf Chapter 1 page 3 has the memory specs. You want PC3-10600 (1333 MHz) memory (2 x 4 GB if your notebook has a dual core processor). If it has a quad core, you can probably install 2 x 8 GB of memory. Do not get PC3 10660 or 10666 memory.

  • Need aftermarket ram specs for late 2012 mini

    Late 2012 Mini 2.3 I7 Quad/4GB and need to upgrade to 16GB.
    I used the specs from the "About my Mac" window and received ram that would fit in my Mac Pro?
    Any help here?

    I went through 3 sets of ram trying to get one to work (all with the specs Apple listed), finally the 4th set did.  I got this one, and it worked!

  • Xserve raid controller ram specs

    I've checked on here and found one similar post but was never acutally answered... Does anyone know what the exact specs are on the RAM used on xserve raid controllers?

    Hi Scott,
    I would say that initial writes were the most effected. If you do a Kona system test you'll notice that the first 256mb's (I assume you use both sides of your raid) write very quickly - probably around 380mb/sec., and then it falls off pretty steeply. It's really nice to have the first gig write that fast. Of course you need to turn on the ram cache under perfomance settings for any of this to work and you have to weigh the risks of using a cache if you don't have the battery back ups or a ups. I run 2 first gen raids as one big raid 50 volume. All of the controllers have 512 megs of cache so my first 2 gigs write at around 700mb/sec.

  • PLS TRANSLATE THESE RAM SPECS

    Hi,
    I am looking at some RAM modules with the following specs and I wonder if any of you could help explain/translate this:
    The exact text on the label for each module is:
    256MB 1Rx16 PC2 - 4200U - 444-12-C3
    What is 1Rx16?
    What is 12-C3?
    Sincere thanks in anticipation.

    The PC2-5300 or PC2-5400 modules will work in the iMac. The spec refers to the speed rating of the memory module.
    I don't know who vends RAM in France, but any retailer that ships abroad (internationally) would be OK.
    I have purchased RAM from www.datamem.com for over 10 years with complete satisfaction. They do ship internationally (do not know what shipping costs would be) and their prices are competitive. You may find other venders through Google.

  • RAM specs different than Apple specs

    I just bought 2x 512MB of RAM (Kingston) for my old 1.8GHz G5. The voltage of the RAM doesn't exactly fit the specifications of Apple. The RAM is 2.6 volt - Apple recommends 2.5 volt. The reseller told me it's not a problem. What do you think?

    The voltage being 2.6 should not be a problem.
    [Even!] Crucial RAM is not 2.5

  • Confusing RAM specs

    I have a 15 inch Flat Panel G4 imac at my school am wanting to upgrade the RAM. I did my research, found the right kind to use, and was set. I remove the bottom plate to discover that there already IS a stick of RAM in the user accessible slot. It's 256. I go back to the system profile and i see this:
    Memory
    DIMM0/J12:
    Size: Empty
    Type: Empty
    Speed: Empty
    DIMM1/J13:
    Size: 256 MB
    Type: SDRAM
    Speed: PC133-333
    To me, this would indicate that one slot is empty right? However, wasnt the non-user accessible slot supposed to have a stick of ram in it? Instead, it looks like this MAc has the stick JUST in the user accessible slot.
    Anyone understand?
    I know i can get a stick and just replace that lower stick, but why wouldnt the upper non user accesible slot have a stick in it?

    The only way to find out is to open it up. Thats a lot easier than you might think. Look at this:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
    Also be aware that the internal Ram is PC 133 168 pin SDRAM.

  • EMac (USB 2.0) RAM Spec Check

    Hi all,
    A PC user is selling his RAM but all he can tell me about it is:
    i have two sticks of samsung 512mg ddr sodimm ram
    "pc2700s-25331-a0 512mb ddr pc2700 cl2.5cn
    m47ol6524cu0-cb3 0534"
    Would there be any other way to identify whether or not this RAM would be able to work in my eMAC?

    More info here:
    http://www.samsung.com/Products/Semiconductor/Support/LabelCodeInfo/DDR_SDRAMModule.pdf
    Looking at the long part number he gave me I think this is
    M470L6524CU0-CB3
    M =Memory Module(M
    4 =4/8 Byte SODIMM
    70=x64 200pin U-DIMM
    L =DDR SDRAM, 2.5V
    65=64M (for 128Mb/512Mb)
    2 =4bank, SSTL_2, 64m/8K Refresh (7.8us)
    4 =x16
    C =4th Generation
    U =TSOP2-400 (Lead-Free)
    0 =None
    C =Normal, Self Ref.

    Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than me can make sense of this and tell me if it would be safe to try it in my eMac.
    Thanks,

  • More ram than specs call for

    Specs for my emac specify support for 1GB of ram. In searching for additional ram (I presently have 512MB) I have found some suppliers that claim you can install 2GB (1GB in each of the two slots). I called and they said they have tested this and it works fine. I consider the company I called to be reputable. Has anyone heard of this? What would be the downside of trying it out - other than the extra cost? Is there some kind of power limitations or something that might harm my computer?
    Thanks for any insight,
    Doug

    Ya if you do a search of this group, you will find this has come up a LOT of times and yes your Mac can use more RAM than 1GB if you want.
    JIMacG5 I think is being a bit paranoid since, A) your eMac is probably long out of warranty anyway and B) Apple only tests up to whatever RAM was available at the time the model was in production. They do not test RAM for old models so many old models have outdates RAM specs and can use a lot more than they "officially" state they do.

  • New RAM problems with my Dual G4 1.25 MDD

    Howdy I've had my Dual G4 1.25 MDD for 2 years and love it. I got it with 1GB RAM, thinking I was set. For Christmas I wanted to Upgrade the RAM to 2GB. from My PowerMac G4 Manual I knew I needed 2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's.
    I went to DealRam (part of DealMac) and found 18004memory.com The price seemed great $39 per stick. I ordered it and within a week got 2x 512MB DIMM's. Problem was it was the Wrong RAM spec. I tried that RAM in my Mac 30 different ways and Everytime the computer either wouldn't boot, or it would suffer Kernel Protection Faults. One time it did boot up but the RAM only recognized as 2x 256MB DIMM's. I called the company, got an RMA and returned the RAM, this time they sent me 2 replacement DIMM's.... for a POWERBOOK, SO-DIMM's. I returned it again and finally Got from them the
    2x 512MB PC2700 DDR333 CL2.5 SDRAM DIMM's. They call it Hyperspeed RAM. Anywho, I powered down let the system cool over night and in the morning, popped it open, put the RAM in the 2 open slots DIMM2/J23 & DIMM3/J20. closed it back up and powered up. Everything was snappier, the boot was quicker and I checked About this Mac, it says 2GB. Apple System Profiler showed all 4 DIMM's and I thought everything was fine.
    Computer ran great for hours, no issues. Everything seemed quicker. Computer went to sleep overnight, next day woke from sleep and Tried to use iTunes and during an extensive sort for Songs, the system Locked up. Nothing would work. Had to force restart. this time I tried to Run my favorite online Game, WoW and after it loaded and I started to play, within 5 mins the whole game locked up. The audio sound went into a sort of Loop, I couldnt force quit and had to force reboot. This happened several times. I finally decided to Run the Apple Hardware Test. The Quick test locked up after running 2mins. I let it sit for 1hr just in case it was still doing something and the progress bar and time never progressed. So i forced reboot, ran Test again this time as Extended test. at 8 min & 31 sec the test stopped and I got an Error Code, this time I wrote it down "2MEM/2/4: DIMM3/J20."
    I guess that DIMM failed. I shutdown, popped open case, and removed DIMM3/J20 leaving the Original 1GB RAM and One of the 512MB Upgrades. I rstarted the Test again and Ran the Extended Test once more. It ran for 27mins & 24 secs and everything passed. So. 1.5GB is better than just 1GB. I powered down and powered back up to try and play WoW. Within 5 mins of loading game to play, everything locked up again.
    So I took both of the new RAM out and left the Original 1GB RAM and ran Test everything was great no Errors. Rebooted, and went onto WoW again and was able to play for several hours. I quit game and shut down for night.
    I have since Tried the 2x 512MB DIMM's in over 10 different variations in the computer with and without the original RAM and everytime I run a high end program or game (WoW, iTunes, and Photoshop), I get lock ups, crashes, and other screen weirdness.
    I dont want to have to Return the Memory again. I am already out over $15 from s/h with RMA's.
    PLEASE Any ideas what to do?
    1 thing I noticed the RAM gets very very hot, when I've powered down tand removed the new RAM. I wonder if there is a cooling issue?
    Anytime I put the Original 1GB RAM in, I dont have problems!

    Hi lz3broc,
    Sounds very much like faulty RAM to me, I'm afraid. I'm not sure about the temperature it's running at, but if the surrounding DIMMs aren't having a problem then I would definitely point the finger at those new memory sticks not being up to scratch.
    If you were convinced it was temperature related then you could always try putting heat spreaders on the memory to help with cooling, but as these stick (semi-permanently) to the RAM then you would never be able to return them.
    My personal opinion is that you should send the RAM back and buy two new DIMMs from Crucial Technology. I only ever buy RAM made by them and I've never had a problem with it - it's the same stuff Apple themselves generally use and works a charm every time. Probably not the news you wanted to hear, but that's probably the only way you're going to get a stable machine with 2GB RAM.
    Hope that helps,
    Andy.

  • Mixing RAM from different manufacturer's?

    can i mix my standard ram with samsung ram? i dont want to buy and have it not work, also there is same ram on the site with slightly different specs for less, a, i better off going with that?

    Hi, and a Warm Welcome to the Power Mac G5 Forum!
    Well - the G5 RAM specs are here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86414
    Some of the Apple Original G5 RAM was Samsung, apparently.
    You will not go far wrong purchasing RAM from OWC with their "Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty"...
    Personally I have never had a problem with Crucial
    http://crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=1D1DFB01A5CA7304
    who have a similar guarantee. And the parent company of Crucial - Micron - were also suppliers of Apple Original G5 RAM, apparently. Good Luck.
