Ram to run 1.5GB at 400Mhz

I need to build a MSI K8N Neo with 1.5GB (3 x 512MB)
And I'm trying to check what RAM will still run at 400Mhz with all three slots populated.
Key question:
Will this work with double-sided RAM, and if not can anybody suggest single sided 512MB sticks.
I'll be using a CG stepping CPU, of course.
And the RAM I'd like to use is Geil Value - GE5123200B (Cas 2.5)
What's odd is that this publication:
http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainbo...7030/memory.pdf
seems to say all sorts of memory brands work with 3 x 512MB sticks at 400Mhz, including the Geil Value 512; but the mobo manual says it only works with single-sided RAM - and all the 512 MB sticks I've seen are double sided.
Am I mis-understanding something?
Peter

read my sig.   Giel will also have errors in memtest no matter what.   Just no fixin it.

  • Does MacBook Pro need more than 4gb ram to run osx lion?

Machine is mid 2009, 4gb ram, 2.26 ghz processor.   Since installing the operating system update and updates to iPhoto, most programs take a longer to load than originally.  I have plenty of hard drive space available for virtual memory.
I have priced up adding ram, but want to be sure before I spend the money.

I think it is safe to say, yes Lion requires more RAM to run and maintain the OS compared to your previous Snow Leopard or Tiger.  But still 2 GB of RAM is advertised as the minimum requirement.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4949
The new Mavericks does seem to manage memory better however the RAM requirement is the same.

RAM is considered your best bang for the buck,  if you do decide to upgrade.

MacBook Pro late 2008 edition with 2 Gigs of RAM and running Mavericks (10.9.5). It gives me an error message when I try to download Yosemite

    All,
I thought it may be related to spaces in the path in which the script was called from. I tried having the ODBC command script in another directory but the same thing happens. It will give me the "CONFIGSYSDSN: Unable to create a data source for the 'Oracle in OraClient10g_home1' driver: Could not load the setup or translator library with error code -2147467259". As soon as the script is done running I can manually double click the script and it adds the DSN fine.

  • IMac 2.4GHz w/4 Gig of Ram now running SLOW.

iMac 2.4GHz w/4 Gig of Ram now running SLOW. Activity Monitor shows all RAM is being used except for 300 MB. How can I tell if I have things running in the background I don't need?

I know about the Dock showing what applications are open, but when I look at the Activity Monitor, I see numerous things running (maybe 40-50) that don't show in the Dock.
I've got a 350 Gig HD with 170 Gig available.

  • My late 2011 MacBook Pro 4 gig RAM is running very slowly, crashing very often. Repaired permissions, repaired disc, updated to Mavericks, uninstalled Blackberry Desktop.  Can only run one app at a time, barely.

Activity monitor shows RAM usage at between 3 and 3.95 most of the time, even with no apps running.  Hard drive has plenty of free space.  Chrome crashes it the most, but any time I run more than two apps at a time, it crashes.  It cannot ever complete a Time Machine backup.  That leaves it dead in the water after a few minutes.  When I say crash, I mean totally unresponsive, even when left alone for hours.  Only a hard reset works.  Then, it is hit or miss when it comes to rebooting.  Often, it crashes at the startup login screen, and often it doesn't even make it that far.  Sometimes, the computer spontaneously restarts itself.  I've looked at the forums, and tried everything that I've seen suggested. I've left it alone overnight, hoping that it was just indexing, but no dice. I even used the sudo purge command once.  That cleared up some RAM for a moment, but didn't affect the performance issues.  I am aware that the RAM usage may have nothing to do with it, but that's the only clue I have.  It is a miracle that I'm even able to finish typing this message, since right now I have Safari and Mail open at the same time!  I've turned off Drop Box.  Every application loads painfully slowly, and then any activity, including typing, is often interrupted by the spinning pinwheel of death.  Sometimes, the problem resolves for a few minutes, and then returns with a vengance.  Help!

  • How can I free RAM after running labview vi

I am trying to acquire 7 channels of data for 60 secs at 44100 Hz using a PCI-6259 card and LabVIEW.  I am using the DAQmx Read polymorphic vi to acquire the data and the 'Write to Spreadsheet File' VI to write it.  When I run the program for the first time, it will acquire and write the data, however when I try to run the program again it says the memory is full when it tries to write the data.  I can close the program and reopen it and it will acquire and write the first time I run the program again, but it will not write the data the second time I try to run it.  I have 3GB of RAM on a Windows XP system.  The data is being acquired as a 2D DBL array and is creating an array that is 2646000x7.  Can someone explain how I might clear the memory without having to exit and reopen the program?  I would also like to increase my sampling frequency to get better resolution.

Take a look at these threads.

Do you really have to save DBL data?? could you change it to I32 or smaller?

  • Can a 1.0 GHz (512mb RAM) machine run a ZFS (NAS) server?

I'm looking to setup a NAS server on a spare machine I have but it's not very powerful...
It's an AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz w/512 MB of RAM.
I've been told that Solaris/ZFS really needs around 2 GB of RAM to operate decently and you should also have a 64bit processor.
Should I ever bother with Solaris + ZFS or will it really not even run on my machine?
Should I just stick with FreeNAS (FreeBSD v6.2R) and software RAID 5?
    Thanks for any help!

Will the apple firmware 500 gig drives work in this specific model
    Which 500GB drives?
If you're looking at the ones for the XServe G5 then no - the XServe G5 uses SATA drives, not the PATA format used by the XServe G4.
If you can find larger PATA drives they should be OK.
I found a source of a few 500 gig origional Xserve drive pulls at a good price
Check with the vendor to be sure where they came from - a G4 or a G5. Even better, make sure he offers a return service if they don't work for you.
I was wondering if anyone has tried adding a USB wireless N network adapter to one of the G4 Xserves by adding a USB 2.0 card into a PCI slot
    I'm sure someone has.
I don't foresee a problem with this, provided you get both a USB2 card and a wireless card that are compatible with Mac OS X.
Personally, though, I'd throw a cable up over the roof (or under the floor if you have a crawlspace) and be done.
Everymac.com lists it capable of using up to 10.5.8 but not supporting anything more recent.
That's correct. It can't run Snow Leopard since that is Intel-only, but it can run any 10.5.x release.

I'd like to know before I spend money on some additional RAM that I need to run the application. Thanks.

You might not even be able to install it. I've known Installer programs to check the the Mac they're on, and not install software if they don't meet the minimum requirements. I don't know that's the case with iWork '06, but it might be. And it might be worth checking before buying iWork '06. If you phone Apple they should be able to verify this. You could also test this by installing the 30 day trial of iWork '06. It comes with iLife '06, though it might be available separately from an Apple Store or Reseller.
My daughter uses Pages on a G4/500 for assignments occasionally and found it "very, very slow". It's slow to start ('bout 15 bounces in the Dock), the template chooser jerks down the screen, scrolling is jerky, and on screen text lags about 2 characters behind what you're typing (even more if you type fast). This lag increases the longer you keep Pages running. NB Restarting Pages returns it back to normal speed.
So your experience on a G4/400 is going to be worse than this. I'd strongly recommend installing the trial and making a decision based on your experience.

  • Optimization for 256 MB of ram server running apache/postgresql

    Hi,
I'm on a VPS for 256 MB of ram planning to run Apache and PostgreSQL.
Does anyone have recommendations on some settings to use so I can avoid blowing up the server with memory problems due to unnecessary spawning of workers or something like that?
    Thanks.

general principles always apply:  use the absolute minimum number of modules.  it's great for security, performance, and simplicity of configuration/maintenance.   Apache comes with a boatload of modules these days, and you really usually need only a few.  The default config should be OK performance wise unless you're really planning on some heavy traffic.
Postgres is another story tho.  There are no modules, but the default config is absolutely minimalistic, it's intended for one local developer and that's it--even the network connectivity is disabled by default!   Postgresql LOVES memory.  the more you give it, the better it's gonna run.  of course if your db is 10mb and you give it 100mb then you wont benefit much from the extra memory, but if it's 10mb and you give it 1mb then you're gonna be running very slowly.  try to fit the whole db in memory if possible.  postgres' memory allocation parameters are _extensive_.  if you like to tweak for performance, you'll go gaga over them.
Generally tho, you won't know what settings you need until you load your data, your site, and you let it run under a normal load for a while.  watch your logs like a hawk and 'learn' your site, how it runs, what gets accessed when, how the db is being used, is the system cpu or io bound, etc...  THEN you can start really adjusting stuff.  Donald Knuth said once that "premature optimization is the root of all evil" and running your own site will definitely demonstrate that.  Log everything, otherwise you'll have nothing to learn from.

  • Optimum RAM to run Aperture?

lMy new 27" iMac computer came with 8Gb of RAM. I also use the NIK plugins ocassionally, and want to know if I would benefit from adding more RAM  --- and how much?
It is simple to install new chips, but it does cost money.

8 GB is plenty for running Aperture under normal circumstances. I've been using it since version 1 and never had a computer with more than 8GB ram.
The current version 3.5.1 with Mavericks 10.9.1 can suffer severe memory leaks (there are plenty of threads on here about it). But additional ram is not the solution to this as it will simply mean you get to run Aperture a little longer before restarting it to recover the used memory. The solution is for Apple to fix the issues so it work properly again. Then it will continue to work just fine with 8 GB ram.
However, more ram will usually bring some performance benefits. Firstly, for those who really push their system to the limits, so if you are importing, processing and exporting thousands of photos daily you may see some benefits of more RAM.
But, the area where RAM is most beneficial to most users is if you like to run multiple applications at once.
Each application needs working RAM to hold it's active data. So if you have Safari open with 10 tabs, Aperture and plug-ins, round-tripping images to Photoshop, while keeping an eye on mail, listening to music with iTunes and transcoding some videos with handbrake, you will obviously need more resources than just running Aperture with the occasional plug-in.
You can use Activity monitor to check how much of the various resources (mostly CPU and Memory) you are consuming. The time to upgrade RAM is when you start noticing your available RAM is under pressure from all the tasks you are trying to do simultaneously.
Memory sizes grow over time as applications start taking advantage of new technologies like 64 bit, multiple CPU cores, Retina/HiDPI displays and so forth, combined with cheaper prices for higher capacities. For most people 8GB is currently plenty. 16GB may be benefical in extreme/poweruser circumstances and 32GB is well into the highly specialised applications arena. In 18/24 months it's likely that 16GB will be the new norm and 8GB might start to be considered the minimum.
Most people would see much more noticeable day to day performance benefits by upgrading from a regualr HD to an SSD because the HD is by far the slowest component on the system (after the user!).

  • How much ram to run fcpx with lion?

I have a macpro  with a xeon graphics card . It is 8 core and qith a 1 trb hd disk and 16gb of ram. I made a clean install for lion meaning I reformatted and then instlled snow leopard then lion. then I installed fcpx among other porgrams including fcpstudio3 .
FCPX runs fine until I get to about the middle of the edit where i am working with a speech which is a whole piece of about 15 minutes . It is one of the pieces in an event folder.
My question is do I have enough ram? or is there another reason for the beach ball to keep in inturupting the edit?

Hi again... can the beach ball that inturpts the program be because of the rendering in the back ground of a long clip (or event) I feel that while I am editing more effects or transistions the amount of ram I have might not be enough to render faster. I can't sell this macpro... I just got it and in my country, that is a lot of money! Do you think the additional 16gb of ram will do? by the way I also threw out all the preference files of FCPX from the preference folder. I'm not sure yet but it looks like it is helping correct the problem. Also my unit does now slow down with lion os and fcpx. maybe it is because of the ATI 5770. Hope that helps others who have a slow down problem. I had that at the start and so I formatted the main hd and then loaded everything else.
Advice pls on the additional ram

My Active RAM is only 261 currently, but when I've got Photoshop, InDesign, Mail, Safari, etc. open I'm just about maxed out. I think Adobe is killing me, cuz I just got that. Before I had no issues running several programs at once. Am I just going to have to upgrade to 2 GIGs?

You'll find that it's a combination of Adobe, as you suspect, and Rosetta. Photoshop, even without Rosetta is a RAM pig and having InDesign in on top of that just put it over the edge with systems that don't have 2GB RAM. The problem is that what used to be OK with 1GB ends up not being OK because Rosetta's going to want 200-300MB or so with these two running.
