RAM Upgrade...8GB to 16GB?

I have the upper model 21.5" 2011 iMac model 12,1. I currently have 8GB of ram and I'm considering upgrading to 16GB. My question is...will I notice an appreciable difference? The machine does not seem slow at all so I have no reason to upgrade, I just have the money and I like the idea of it being "maxed out". All I use the machine for is World of Warcraft and internet usage...mail, web browsing, etc. I do a minimal amount of photo organization in iPhoto, but that's about it. Do you think I would see a benefit in upgrading, or would that money be better spent on something else?

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently. It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster. What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent. It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

Mac Mini (late 2012) ram upgrade: 8gb dual channel vs 10gb? Flex Mode?

I attempted to upgrade my Mac Mini (late 2012) from the stock 4gb of ram to 8gb. However, I messed up and didn't pay attention when buying the ram online and ordered 1x8gb stick rather than 2x4. Will losing dual channel with a 2/8 combo (10gb) make a difference that I will notice? Will having the additional 2gb make up for any lost performance? And finally, is flex mode available with the Mac Mini so that I'd still be running 4gb at dual channel and 6gb single?
The 8gb stick arrived and I'd like to install it but Ill send it back and get the 2x4 depending on what I hear back.

to the best of my knowledge, when upgrading your Mac mini's RAM, you must upgrade it with 2 SODIMM's at a time. When I bought my Mac mini Late 2012 model it had all the base level specs. Pretty soon the stock 4GB (2x 2GB) just wasn't fast enough. I bought a Crucial 16GB upgrade from Amazon (2x 8GB) and now my Mini is much faster especially when I am using Photoshop.
Only thing I would do next is trying to swap the boot HD to a SSD, but am unsure as my Mac mini late 2012 is under AppleCare through December 2015 and I do not know if it would void the warranty.

Trying to upgrade RAM from 8GB to 16GB

My issue is that there is no RAM cover on the bottom of the laptop like normal HP's ive owned before. Whats up with this? Im a soldier and about to deploy again and im just trying to have a faster laptop and no one has been able to help me. I would have bought the 16GB Ram laptop if I saw it at the time I bought mine.

Yep, and you'll notice a very pleasant increase in performance. Choose a reliable brand such as Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, OWC, etc., then visit their portal to use their configurator to determine the correct model for your Mac. Be sure it is Mac-certified for maximum reliability, as these computers are very finicky when it comes to memory.

I would like to upgrade my RAM to improve its performance because I need to work on many programs simultaneously and the virtual machines that I run are not satisfactory. At a store that is collaborating with apple, they suggested that I should better upgrade up to 8GB because of the processor frequency (no more than 2GHz), but how can I confirm that ? Can I have an official answer by Apple? If Apple approves it I would rather buy 16GB ram. But if it doesn't fit, and need to change with 8GB afterwards, the store doesn't return the money difference to me.
They also mentioned that Apple provides either Kesington or FCM. Now they provide only FCM. What is your opinion about this brand? What about Crucial or Geil for example? Would there be a problem?

There is no official Apple answer on the forums. Apple is not here answering questions. We are users just like you. Good RAM sources are:

Just be sure you get RAM with the correct specs. Although your model has been shown able to run 16 GBs, this is not the official Apple spec which is 8 GBs. That means that for most models like yours 16 GBs will work, but there is no guarantee it will work in every Mac in your model class.
If you will be running emulators, then allow at least 2 GBs of RAM per running VM plus 4 GBs for OS X if you need to run more than a couple concurrent applications.

RAM upgrade 8gb question

Been very happy with MBP 13 (mid-2009/5,1), 500GB/7200 and 4GB memory.
Now as I do more graphic/video (CS5) and occasional VM+Win work, I feel the need to increase the memory upto 8GB.
So far, I found two places to purchase 8gb memory kits.

Question:

NewEgg also has listings for memory specifically for Macs. Specs all appear to be the same, but brings the price to the same as OWC (for the Mushkin).
As for OWC, as stated in the preceding reply, they are reputable. I have seen more countless recommendations for them when it comes to 3rd party Mac parts. I picked up 12GB of RAM for my Mac Pro from them and have had zero issues.

You will only notice a performance improvement if you haven't got enough RAM to use the applications you need. If you had a lot of free RAM before, you won't notice any difference now.
If you already have your computer, you can only replace the processor if you replace the logic board. Your computer requires a specific logic board, so you shouldn't replace it and you have to stay with the same processor. Apart from RAM, the only part you can upgrade is the hard drive. What will make an improvement is a SSD drive, if you haven't got one

Macbook pro wont sleep after ram upgrade

Hi,
I have a 17" Macbook pro late 2011. I upgraded the ram from 8gb to 16gb last week and now I having trouble with sleep. When the laptop goes to sleep it always to seems to go into hibernation mode. When I open the lid I can only wake the computer by holding the power button for around 7 secs and then it does a restore from the HD. I've tried a PRAM + SMC reset. Also tested the ram and everything seems good. Below is the output from pm set, the console after hibernation restore (filtered for the word 'sleep') and the memtest. Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, check out Apples article on the issue: OS X Yosemite: If your Mac won’t go to or stay in sleep If you find these steps don't help, try a few of the following
A common cause for the Mac not sleeping is your printer. If there are queued jobs waiting to be printed, but your printer is switched off, for some reason you Mac just wont like it and simply will not go to sleep. System Preferences > Print and Scan > Open Print Queue
Do you have an Ethernet Cable connected? People have reported in the past that removing their Ethernet allowed their Mac to sleep. This goes for other things you may have connected directly to your Mac also.
Try heading into your Mac Preferences > Sharing and deselecting 'Internet Sharing' as well as 'Printer Sharing'.
Also deselect Wake For Network Access by heading to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Power Adapter > Wake For Network Access.
Energy Saver > Schedule > Startup or Wake - Uncheck.
Alternatively, set your system preferences to Never Sleep, and put into Sleep manually: System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep > Never.

Intel Rapid Start stops working when RAM upgraded

I have a brand new ENVY dv7-7212nr notebook running Windows 8 64-bit.
This machine has Intel Rapid Storage Technology which caches hard disk data (I think on the 32GB SSD) and Intel Rapid Start Technology which stores active memory in the SSD cache (I think) when the computer enters a hibernation state.
The first thing I did was upgrade the RAM from 8GB to 16GB. It works fine, but then I get an error message "your system does not appear to have intel rapid start technology enabled."
HP provides very little information on this, basically none. I assume the memory is being cached on the SSD, but I don't know how to verify this. Also I notice that acceleration is not enabled under the Rapid Storage Tecnology applet for either drive.
I called tech support twice but the techs knew nothing about upgrading RAM beyond the usual and couldn't get it to work either.
Does anybody even know exactly how the SSD is being used in my system? That would be valuable information to me.

The "little SSD" is still a drive and not a chip, although you are right that it is little and it is attached to the motherboard. It is little because its form factor is not the typical 2.5 inch size but what's call "mSATA". In fact, the service manual for this dv7-7212nr laptop shows you how you can remove and replace or upgrade this mSATA SSD:
Below is a comparison of how small the mSATA form factor is to other drive sizes (from Left to Right: mSATA, 1.8", 2.5", 3.5"):
So if I want to replace the mSATA 32 GB SSD with a 64 GB SSD, I would have to get a mSATA SSD, not the typical 2.5" ones. So for this dv7-7212nr laptop, there can be 3 total drives installed: one in the mSATA slot and two in the 2.5'' drive bays. However, the default configuration as sold by HP only has one mSATA 32 GB SSD and one 750 GB SATA hard drive, with the remaining drive bay empty.
This dv7-7212nr laptop does contain all the latest (and perhaps more complex) technologies and HP probably does not expect the typical user/consumer to go and muck around all the default settings. However, if one is curious and willing to make the effort to learn, the material is just a google search away.
Here are the instructions for setting up Intel Rapid STORAGE Technology (aka Intel Smart Response Technology): http://download.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/intel_smart_response_technology_user_guide.pdf
For this dv7-7212nr laptop, you can ignore steps 1-4 because the BIOS is already configured properly from the factory (unless some changes were made by the end user).

For this particular laptop, ignore steps 1-7 but it is important to do this first: set up Intel Smart Response Technology as above, making sure to allow enough space on the SSD for a hibernation partition that is equal to or greater than the total size of RAM installed. Then follow steps 8 to the end of the guide. It is important to set up Intel Smart Response before Intel Rapid Start because Intel Smart Response will destroy all partitions and data on the disk (if you set up a hibernation partition for Intel Rapid Start first, it will be removed when you set up Intel Smart Response).
I have successfully ENable and DISable these technologies on my laptop using the above guides (with my modifications). WARNING: back up all data before trying any of this.
In your case, I agree that you can also disable Rapid START and just use the whole SSD for acceleration along with the 16 GB RAM upgrade.

Should I upgrade to 8GB or 16GB of memory (RAM)?

I've had my laptop since November of last year but lately it seems to be getting slow and constantly loading for no reason. I was thinking of upgrading the processor, but I read that I will void the warranty if I do that so my next step would be to upgrade the RAM. I currently have 6GB installed, however only 5.48GB is usable and almost 2GB is being used by my system with barely anything open. I've had this problem before and I reset my computer to factory default settings, but it seems to not have helped. So I was wondering if I should upgrade the memory to 8GB or 16GB? How much would it help to speed things up on my computer? I would really appreciate the help. Please let me know. Thank you. Here are my computer specs:

Does sound like a less than optimized OS install & kind of typical of most factory OEM install machines.
I would download the generic Windows 7 install & give it a nice clean install & setup as will be far more rewarding than RAM upgrade.
I run a probook on 3GB for business/work related use & it is enough & the craze for 16GB of ram is simply a waste for 99% of people.
Do a ram test & hard drive test & ifgood think about a clean install.

I bought a 8gb ram upgrade for my macbook pro and it isnt getting the job done (I'm trying to run Protools 10).
Where can I find a 16gb or 32 gb upgrade that is compatible with my macbook?

Macbook Pro 16gb ram upgradability

I'm looking into buying a Macbook pro and was planning on buying the non-retina display version. This laptop will primarily be used for school work, iTunes, video streaming, Photoshop, lightroom, aperture, and whatnot. Now i plan on buying the 2.6gh version, but Im wondering if the 8gb of ram it comes with is enough. I also heard somewhere that it would be recognized and wouldn't make a difference if i upgraded it to 16gb.
I would've liked to go with the new retina display model, but i can only afford the lower entrance model with the 2.3 processor, and i'm not sure if this would work for my needs.

My 2011 MBP can take 16 GB RAM. macsales.com sells the 16 GB kit for $160 currently. Apple tests against the more commonly available RAM types when publishing hardware limits, so only reports 8 GB as a maximum.
8 GB RAM is abut $50 through macsales.com, so buy the default 4 GB regardless of where you decide to go.

Issues with sleep/wake feature after 16GB RAM upgrade in my MacBook Pro. Any thoughts?

Just installed a 16GB RAM upgrade in my MacBook Pro and now it doesn't wake up on it's own when I open the lid. I have to press the power button. It works fine with a smaller RAM upgrade.
I've tried putting in just one of the 8GB modules and the sleep/wake feature works as normal so there isn't a problem with the RAM modules that I've bought (Crucial.com). I've also put in a combination of Apple's original RAM and the new ones to make 10GB (8GB + 2GB), and the sleep/wake feature works on that too. Put both 8GB modules back in and the MacBook doesn't wake up when I open the lid, I have to press the power button to wake it up. The MacBook itself works fine, super fast and the memory is recognised on 'About This Mac', the sleep/wake issue is the only problem I'm having with the 16GB RAM.
Any thoughts on this? Has anybody else had this sleep/wake issue like this when upgrading RAM?

I upgraded my early 2011 MBP to 16 gigs with Crucial. My machine would not sleep properly, because when I tried to wake it, it would wake from its hibernate image file. This is the issue I've seen here in this list.
I tried all the suggestions I saw on these groups. Nothing helped. I contacted Crucial, who suggested that if their RAM was defective, they'd replace it per their warranty process. I needed some proof it was their RAM causing the problem.
I put the original 8 gigs RAM back in the machine (2 4 gig sticks), and it behaved normally. I then put one stick of Crucial RAM in, all by itself. The machine behaved normally. I put the other stick of Crucial RAM back in, and took the first one out. The machine would not properly sleep and wake from sleep. This proved that one stick was causing the problem, and the other was not.
Defective RAM!
I then requested and received an RMA from Crucial to send the defective RAM back. They paid shipping. I got new sticks of RAM about a week later. These new sticks of RAM work properly. No sleep issues.
I'm surprised and disappointed to say that this is not the first time I've received defective RAM from Crucial. I've purchased from them for years, and had GREAT service and received high quality products. The past couple years my experience has been different.
I'm still pretty steamed about this, as I spent a great deal of time trying to diagnose the problem and fix it. I don't really have that kind of time to waste. My expectation was that their RAM was high quality, and unlikely to be at fault.
Perhaps this is just a bad batch of RAM. I get that. I can forgive them once. But this has happened twice in the past three years. I'll look elsewhere for my next memory purchase.
Keep in mind that their customer ratings are generally very high. My experience is probably isolated.
