RAM Upgrade for Mid-2010 MBP 2.8 GHz Core i7

I ordered an 8 GB Memory upgrade kit from OWC. When I install the memory, the screen remains blank and I get 3 long tones, 3 short tones and 3 long tones. Article HT2538 says that should be a Firmware restoration from CD in process, but that's not the case. Software Update says everything is at the latest level. Bad Ram, or wrong specs the more likely culprit? What about Firmware?
Both the current system settings and the label on the new ram says DDR3 PC8500 1066MHz

Update: OWC Tech Support responded to try and clean the RAM contacts witha pencil eraser. This work for one module, but not the other. I will be returning the defective module.
Additionally, I was incorrect about the error code. The system replies with 3 short tones, 3 long tones, 3 short tones. This is opposite of the "Firmware upgrade" code I thought I was getting. I have not been able to ID this code (The RAM failed checksum code is just 3 short tones, not this sequence)

  • RAM Upgrade for Mid-2010 MacBook Pro?

I have a mid-2010 15 inchMacBook Pro with 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB of RAM. I've put OSX Mavericks on it, and it's painfully slow. I reaize it was probably a mistake to upgrade to Mavericks on an older machine. I'm too lazy to roll back the operating system but was wondering if upgrading the RAM might help. Appreciate thoughts on this. Also, how much RAM can go into this machine?

melophage has a 2010.  so i would think that he's had some experience.
I have a 2011 MBP so my specs are probably different, however, mine was set max at 8g.  I did some researching and found that my particular model can accept 16g.  some could not, and there was a lot of anxiety that I had, in making that jump LOL.  But like whywutt, I went to crucial and got their confirmation on my model.  I got the type they indicated, which abrody is very adept, if you get it wrong, it can cause complications.
further some did and it didn't work.  and it may not work for your model.  but doing the research is what had me going, dipping into some forums, doing some reading.  not relying on just a post.  going to crucial, making the double checks, helped me correct a potential error I almost made during ordering.
i broke a sweat putting them in and powering up.  its worked.  and i had a few little glitchy things here and there.  but with some updates, some recognition of the memory heavies.  my basic issue is rising heat.  but for regular programs, i can use the machine with similar speed to my thought process, which is very scary.  lol
however, i rock with 16g.  LOL. I wouldn't want to gloat if you cannot upgrade to 16g  but if you couldn't, and you really want maverick, popping up to a late 2011 might be an upgrade choice, since there's hard cut offs by year on older models, which I absolutely despise that issue with manufacturers.  but the 2011 has graphics, like others above say.  so really part is the memory.  the other part is graphics.  duo to quad etc. etc.
but do more asking.  search on your unit.  see what your options are.  and you are doing that.  that's a great step.
i prefer maverick, hate the name, lost some things that I loved.  but overall, iOS compatibility.....
and you know on my older mac, i have a 2009/2010 white case, and yah, it didn't reach the speeds and processing that I personally required, and always had glitches, and funky electronic cul-de-sacs in working the machine.  mainly when you start wanting to do things like run parellels and windows, or you have a project and you need this plus that, but you are misisng a component.  i don't have those issues now.  not nearly as much LOL.
but I lost all my old adobe apps.  adobe totally cut me off.  not interested in moving forward with adobe for the buy in and live comfortably without it.
so there are some things that i mull through and remember, when I was in your chair, making similar comparisons in what to do and how to do it, and modifying my machine.  i upgraded.  i'm glad i made the jump.  but if you can't, there's probably some work arounds to assist you living with what you have and that's not a bad thing.  i did want to live with what I had. anyways.  good luck.

  • Advice on 512 SSD for mid-2010 MBP

I have an i7, mid-2010 MBP with self-upgraded 8GB and I'd like to replace the HD with an SSD. I think now prices have come down enough for me to afford this and I would like advice on doing this, please. I am running Mavericks but will upgrade to Yosemite well before doing the swap. I've read that some firmware needs to be updated/patched before replacing an MBP's HD with an SSD and that Mavericks might have trouble with them. I do not understand the details, I'm afraid. I have found a couple of SSDs on eBuyer and would like advice on the right drive:

TL;DR: Is there anything I need to know before I go ahead and order an equivalent SSD to replace my MBP's HD and are there any gotcha's I should know about regarding firmware/drivers etc?
    Thanks,
    Matt

I love Crucial SSDs - I've four now. If I were you, I would go for the M550 512GB. It's the latest Crucial technology and a bit faster than the MX100 series. Flashing new firmware is pretty straight-forward, although you usually need access to an optical drive to burn a disc to boot from.

  • Hard Drive and RAM upgrades for latest 15" MBP

I'm minutes from ordering a new MBP. Only concerns are whether I get hte Apple upgrades or shop around.
    I like this Hard Drive...
    http://www.compu2000.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=6433
    And this RAM upgrade...
    http://www.a-power.com/product-10937-311-4
If these are equivalent to the apple options I can save hundreds and get a 320 GB drive, which will make a great portable.
So, does my plan hold water?

You're on your own for support when you do your own upgrades like this, but generally speaking, it works fine.
Note that HDD is less risky than RAM. With RAM you run the risk of unstable behavior that is tougher to diagnose. That said, a quality RAM upgrade and some initial testing with any of many available tools is as good as a factory build.
HDD upgrades are less risky, and I've upgraded (well, replaced after HDD death) ones in my MBPs many many times. I crunch my hard drives more than normal and have to generally replace them about every year. Some of the MBPs don't make this easy, and prepare to get all sorts of cozy with little 0 and 1 sized Phillips screwdrivers and some T6 as well, but it is doable (just not quite for the truly faint of heart).
Again, you're on your own for support once you do this, so weigh that in your decision.

  • Bootcamp 5 for mid-2010 MBP troubles...

Hello community, I've been having some frustration with Bootcamp 5.0 and up now with my Macbook Pro mid-2010 model. I've had bootcamp running fine with windows 7 before Apple released 5, but I've read that for some reason that my model does not support the support software. All i am trying to do is have my bootcamp setup how i had it before, which is just the windows 7 bootcamp partition with my mouse and everything working fine. Backlit keyboard and such isn't too important, i'm just more focused on the basic functionality. So does anyone know if there's any workaround this? maybe alternate drivers i could download after i reinstall my windows 7?
    Thank you very much guys!
    Opher

I wish I could but i already wiped out my previous Windows 7 setup completely. I'm basically starting fresh. I just mentioned that because it worked on the model before so I thought it would be possible for it to work now

  • Maximum RAM for Mid-2010 iMac 3.2GHz w/ Core i3 Processor?

I am looking to upgrade the RAM on my iMac. This is the first time I've ever done so and the reason for it is that I'm finally starting to experience some noticeable lag while playing games. I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means but I feel as though the kinds of games I play shouldn't be struggling so much to run. Some examples of games I've played that have had trouble include Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Left 4 Dead. These games came out a few years ago so it's not like I'm pushing the limits of my machine here! I've done quite a bit of research online but I've come across some conflicting reports on the maximum amount of RAM I can install.
Apple's support files state that the computer can hold up to 16GB of RAM, but then go on to state that this would be equivalent to a 4GB SO-DIMM in each slot. Is that because there are four total slots in my iMac? (See... I told you I'm new at this!)
At the same time, I've also read that it is possible to install up to 32GB of RAM in this particular model of iMac. Is this actually true?
Whichever the case may be... can anyone recommend some good, quality, dependable brands of RAM? Because in doing my research I've read a few horror stories about faulty RAM (and no... I'm not planning on shopping on eBay so don't worry!).
My final question is this: Is upping my RAM actually worth it? As in, will it help my games run smoother and/or better? I ask because I've also wondered if the video card might be the bigger problem (which I hope it's not because I have no idea if it's even possible to replace that).
Sorry for being so long-winded but I just really want to make sure I do this right and don't waste my money. Thank you in advance for any help! =)

Your computer has 4 slots. When Apple shipped the computer the largest DIMM shipping was 4GB so Apple advertises 16GB as the max. According to OWC that remains the maximum for your computer, only the i5 and i7 models can be upgrade to 32GB. At this time 16GB should be plenty for most people.
There are a number of things that have an impact on speed and, of course, one of them is RAM. When your computer first came out the operating system you were using was less RAM hungry. It seems that each new upgrade (or every other OS upgrade) ups the RAM ante. Other things that have an impact are the utilities and programs you run behind the scenes. They can burn up lots of CPU cycles and RAM. Hard drive space is another factor - the operating system and programs need room for temporary files and when this room isn't available the computer slows down. So, are you running anything like anti-malware? Dump it, not needed. Do you have about 25GB of free drive space? If not, free some up.
Quality RAM - not only what you buy but who you buy it from is important. I go with Crucial or OWC.

  • RAM upgrade for 2011 13in MBP

Hey guys, I am thinking about getting a 13in Macbook Pro as my current laptop just died on me. I have just one question. The company I work for gets exclusive deals with apple so there are some pretty nice discounts on the actual laptop and the additional available upgrades. I thought I’d take advantage of this but I’m wondering if its going to be a waste of money. Is it worth the upgrade from 4GB of ram to 8GB or will I not utilize all 8GB of that RAM? The computer will be used for producing (mainly sample based), editing HD video, and editing photos/graphic design. So is the upgrade worth it or should I stick with the 4GB of RAM or take a look at the 15in with the Quad-Core i7?
    Thanks in advance!
Ps. Screen size does not matter because while at home I will be connecting to a 24in monitor I already have.

Photo and Video apps are mostly the "Ram eaters". 4GB more ram by apple is somewhat more expensive than ram that you buy afterwards, however in your situation I would go for the Apple delivered system with 8GB.
Choose the model with the most memory in the video card, for the same reason.

  • Calibrate Battery for Mid 2010 MBP 15" and "safe" sleep

Ok, I have read various posts on what is suppose to happen. I know Apple changed the way the "computer will goto sleep when battery is drained after warning message" function from the earlier non-clam-shell MBP's did. But, I have gotten mixed messages on that as well.
What happens on my MBP when I run the battery down is that a warning message pops up, then if I do not put it to sleep or plug power in, it shuts down into safe sleep mode with the result being NOT a pulsating sleep light like the non-clam shell MBP's.
    If you read:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
I am assuming safe sleep is not like normal sleep in that no pulsating light is present? From the link above... (but doesn't mention that "safe sleep" is a non-pulsating light version..
*Tip: When the battery reaches "empty", the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually keeps back a reserve beyond "empty", to maintain the computer in sleep for a period of time. Once the battery is truly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down. At this point, with the safe sleep function introduced in the PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD) computers, the computer's memory contents have been saved to the hard drive. When power is restored, the computer returns itself to its pre-sleep state using the safe sleep image on the hard drive.*
So, is this what others with this model are seeing?

I'm using the early 2011 model of the MBP 15". I experienced the same thing. I used the battery until it got to 0% and then the display turned off. The sleep light only glowed once and then faded and did not pulsate. When I pressed the Power Button, that brought up a grayed version of the desktop. And then after a few seconds, I was back to the normal desktop. Is that the same thing that happened to you?

  • Ram upgrade for mac Book Pro mid 2009

Hi, I just bought 2x Kingston 4GB ram upgrades for mid-2009 MacBook Pro. First I don't notice any difference in speed. Second, the computer (in about this mac, activity monitor) doesn't seem to acknowledge it now has 8gb of ram not 4gb. Why would these be so?

You should be able to install 8GB I would check to make sure it has a secure connection. Maybe one of the RAM sticks is bad, or the port itself is bad.
    13-Inch Mid 2009: http://support.apple.com/kb/sp541
    15-Inch Mid 2009: http://support.apple.com/kb/sp544
They both state that they can support up to 8GB of RAM.

  • Mid 2010 MBP wont upgrade

    Hello to the apple forums!
I have a bit of a dilemma with my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro. My brother gave me this mac (it was his old one) and it ran Mountain Lion when he had it. He removed the hdd before he gave it to me, and in the process, the HDD cable tore. The Optical drive was allready dead, so I decided to replace the drive with a 2nd hdd caddy, throw my own hdd in the caddy and run from that.
This is where the problems started for me. I tried to install mountain lion from my usb (made from the appstore installesd), and when booting, the apple logo & pinwheel would load, but then just freeze solid, no movement at all. So I asked my brother if that happened, and he said yes and that he needed to install snow leopard and upgrade from there. So, I grabbed the 10.6.3 usb disk from my old mid 2010 macbook air, and proceeded to install it. The install went great. I can use the OS and life was good. Then I decided that I actually wanted to use my purchased copy of Mountain Lion. The mac didnt like that. I tried to upgrade to 10.6.8, and the upgrade worked fine, but upon rebooting, it would freeze at the pinwheel screen. So, I booted in verbose mode, and this time it would get to the line "AirPort: Link down on en1. Reason 1 (Unspecified)" and just stop loading.
So, I contacted apple care. I was sent through resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, SMC and trying to boot with internet recovery. All of which failed and I was told to bring the machine to an apple store. So I did just that. At the apple store, they tried all the same things I was walked through, and even tried booting off of several of their own network drives (including a 'triage' drive), all of which got stuck at the pinwheel. The apple tech took the pc in the back, tried disconnecting my hdd caddy and removing one of the ram chips (not like I hadn't allready tried that) and stated that it wasn't those particular pieces of hardware that were causing it, but he noticed something on the motherboard that looked like a spill, and that he couldn't do anymore with it.
This particular spill happened before my brother got the mac. He was given the mac in an unbootable state, and was told if he could fix it, it was his. So he cleaned all of this mysterious, jelly like material, off of the motherboard and it worked perfectly for him in the 9 months that he had it.
Anyways, after leaving apple, I had to reseat the ram because the moron who took it in back didn't seat it right, or check that the mac was in the same state as when he got it, and today I started noticing problems with the hdd (which I had not had before visiting apple). So I put a new hdd in, reinstalled SL and have been running on that. I decided for the 'lulz' to try and boot Internet Recovery in verbose mode, and to my surprise it worked!
I watched the verbose messages, and the mac gets to the following line before freezing:
    using 64-bit bootcache playlist
BootCacheControl: Unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist: 2 No such file or directory
    Previous Shutdown Cause: 3
    SMC::smcHandleInterruptEvent WARNING status=0x0 (0x40 not set) notif=0x0
SMC::smcInitHelper ERROR: MMIO regMap == NULL - fall back to old SMC mode
    ***** [BroadcomBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport][start] -- Completed -- this = 0xffffff802441cc00
    NVDAStartup: Official
    NVDANV50HAL loaded and registered
after that, it just sits there and looks at me like I'm stupid. I'm not sure whats causing this thing to fail, or why, after my brother had Mountain Lion on it for the past 9 months, that it fails to boot into even the mountain lion installer now.
    Mac Specs:
    13" Macbook Pro, Mid 2010 (7,1 I believe)
    Core 2 Duo @ 2.4ghz
    8gb DDR3 Ram
    Nvidia GeForce 320m (256mb)
    250gb Toshiba 5400rpm HDD
    Snow Leopard 10.6.3
    Any iput is greatly appreciated.

Finally, I have gotten OS X Mavericks installed on my Mid 2010 13” Macbook Pro!
I ended up going to the hackintosh community (oddly enough) to fix it!
As I stated before, I was stuck on 10.6.3, so in order for the Mavericks installer to work, I had to modify the (installed) system version, and do a clean install of mavericks, but it was FakeSMC and NullCPUPowerManagement, 2 kexts which are designed to allow OS X to run on non apple hardware, that saved the day!
Using both the FakeSMC and NullCPUPowerManagement, I was able to get the Mavericks USB I created to boot in my mac without any freezes. Then, after install (and setup), I removed FakeSMC and Viola! I’m now running OS X Mavericks!
Hope this helps anyone with the same problem as me!

  • Will internet recovery work on my mid 2010 MBP with yosemite and the firmare internet recovoery update designed for OS lion

will internet recovery work on my mid 2010 MBP with yosemite and the firmare internet recovery update designed for OS lion

Yes, it does. The point is can your computer use full Internet Recovery with the firmware update or not. If not then you have to begin with the Snow Leopard DVD that came with your computer and do an Erase and Install.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
However, if you can use full Internet Recovery:
Install Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
