RAM Upgrade - how much memory?

I've got a recent iBook G4, which has 512mb of built-in RAM, and I think more would be better.
It's best to max out the memory on a computer that only has ONE slot, but I'm somewhat economically challenged at the moment and I'm wondering how much of a difference there is between a RAM-maxed iBook at 1.5gigs and a RAM-doubled iBook at 1gig. In other words, is lack of enough memory still a major speed bottleneck at 1gig of RAM?
It's an iBook, so obviously I don't do anything intensive like video editing. But I do tend to have a lot of programs open at one time and I find myself staring at the rolling beachball more often than I'd like -- with Safari in particular.
Has anyone tried both configurations or otherwise have any advice on the matter?
PS: I avoid Firefox because it's just so slow, but Safari seems to be the number one beachball rolling app as of late. Anyone have any <pun>memorable</pun> experiences with other browsers (Opera, Camino, Shiira, etc.)? I'm thinking of switching to Camino, but I will miss Safari's RSS integration.

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
More RAM is always the better way. I have 1.5 in my iBook and it runs very smoothly. Make sure you purchase from a reputable dealer. I purchased mine from MacRam Direct.
There are a number of factors that can affect Safari's speed and operation. Insufficient RAM can be one. With Safari and Firefox, both tend to increase their need for RAM the longer they are used in a session. This is due to coding leaks which have yet to be corrected. I usually restart the browser when it starts to seem sluggish.
Also, if you are on broadband, you can disable Safari's cache file, which will give you a speed boost. You'll need to download a copy of Safari Enhancer to do so.
There are other steps you can take. A "search" on the Apple Discussion Safari Forum will lead you to other solutions.

I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to Lion, in order to use iCloud, but the specs indicate I don't have enough memory. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?

I believe your model iMac can address 3 GB RAM; the minimum for Lion is 2 GB - however, that is an absolute minimum for very light use. You would be much happier with a minimum of 4 GB.

(You can install 4 GB, but it will only be able to address about 3.1 - 3.2 GB)

  • How much memory can i put in my imac

how much memory can i put in my new imac

Assuming it's a 27" 2012 machine, it will accomodate up to 32GB. I'd strongly recommend reputable vendors such as OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial.
If you bought a 21.5" iMac the RAM is not upgradeable. The 21.5" machines will accomodate up to 16GB from Apple however you have to order the machine with 16GB directly. OWC does provide RAM upgrade kits for the 2012 210.5" iMacs however it is MAJOR surgergy and is full of risks including fatally damaging the machine and invalidating the warranty.

  • I don't understand how much memory a mac mini has please help!

I feel really stupid asking this, but I can't understand how much memory a Mac Mini has...
    512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), supports up to 2GB
    I hope that doesn't mean it only holds 2GB...but I don't know.
PLEASE HELP ME! I need to get a Mac soon before my PC dies again.
    Mac Mini

    Hi opera_rocker
I think that you may have found yourself in a little bit of a pickle regarding technical hardware terms, so I'll try and clear things up for you.
The Mac Mini comes as standard with 512MB of RAM (Read Only Memory). RAM is a little stick that is built into the computer that supplies the software with all the virtual memory that it needs to accomplish tasks. The more RAM that you have in your computer, the faster software will run, and the more things you can have going on at the same time. You never actualy use RAM for personal files and folders. The Mac Mini will accept a total of 2GB of RAM, which comes as an optional upgrade from Apple, however, 1GB is more than adequate.
All of your files and folders are kept on your hard drive, like that in your 30GB iPod. Everything that you use on your computer, whether it be Word Processing software, or Games for example, are stored on the hard drive. The Mac Mini can come with either a 60GB, or 80GB Hard Drive depending on which model you decide to buy. That's plenty more space than you have on your actual iPod and you will most probably never seem to run out of room!
Hope that I may have been of help!

  • I am debating how much memory I need to get on my Ipad?  Any thoughts

I am interested in getting an Ipad2 but do not know if I need 16gb or 32gb memory?  Any thoughts?  I would probably have 20 to 30 apps running on the Ipad2.

He was asking a very relevant question, many of us ask when purchasing an ipad.
Your answer is irrelevant and wrong. The question was how much memory do I need for my ipad? not how much ram or is it future proof through upgrade. What you term as storage is flash 'memory' and the other, DDR is indeed RAM. The difference with this application being one is volatile & the other is not. Its obvious he is talking about flash memory so why post for the sake of it?
I used to own ipad 1 64GB/3G device (bad WIFI experience & returned the device). However I initially used it for web browsing, watching catchup TV, books & some apps. As I have other devices for music and films I really didn't benefit from the additional expense.
HD films typically consume ~2GB, single 128 bit song of ~4mins is about 4MB, most books do not comsume a great deal of space. Given films have the greatest impact it largely depends how many films you wish to carry around. Given they can be swapped in/out very easily with itunes its not a big deal. Additionally there are many tools that permit you to lower the film quality to reduce the file size.
Having some idea of file sizes and how many of each media type you wish to carry around you can extrapolate the most suitable memory density for you.
Good luck with whichever model you select.

  • How much memory for the G5 2.7?

    I am buying a refurbished G5 2.7 from Apple.
The primary application will be Pro Tools HD2 for audio mixing.
    QUESTIONS:
    (1) How much memory will I likely need? 2GB? 4GB?
    (2) I will buy the memory from Crucial. Should I remove the original memory and use only the Crucial 1GB pairs, so they are matched?
    Powermac G5 2.7   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No need to remove the original RAM.
How much to install depends on how you'll be using ProTools. If it's only audio (no sample players), 2GB would probably work perfectly. If you're using samplers heavily, with lots of large samples, you might want to go to 5-6GB.
I'd start with 4GB, RAM for these is cheap (compared to RAM for the Mac Pro.)

  • How much memory can I install in my mac book pro?

Mac book pro 2.4 GHz late 2011 i7....How much memory can I install? Currently have 4Gb but want to run Win 7 on VMware and want to make sure my user has enough

The position of Apple is that the Late 2011 can take 8 GB, however, OWC, http://www.macsales.com and Crucial, http://www.crucial.com both guarantee their 16 GB ram packages to work.  Both are sellers of high quality ram that is guaranteed to work in Macs.

  • How do I check how much memory I have left on my MacBook Pro

Im just curious because I am a HUGE gamer and Im in the progress of downloading a 6.6 GB game to my 8 GB laptop. Id like to check how much memory I have to be safe and make sure it docent overflow. Unfortunetly I dont know how to do this so thats why Im asking. Im also wondering just in case what would happen if I reached the maximum data...thats what I am REALLY worried about if it will crash and burn and go all "2467474098170984704083470561837089_ERROR_CODE" on me. I really dont want that to happen because I need to make this computer last. Please type back as soon as possible. Thank you!

    smash adams,
If you're talking about hard disk space, open Finder, click once on your hard disk (left column) and look at the bottom of the Finder window.
If you're talking about RAM, Finder >Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
Open Activity monitor and click the System Memory tab.

  • Lightroom and CS3 Simultaneously - How much memory?

I've been trying to use Lightroom's image management features, but need to finish the "keepers" in CS3. The problem is my computer only has 2G of RAM, and both Lightroom and CS3 are giant memory hogs. Has anyone been able to successfully run both programs at the same time (with reasonably complicated PS files consisting of a dozen layers or so) ?
If so, how much memory does it take? 4G 8G?
    Thanks,
    --Michael

The wording of your question seems to suggest that your setup has issues with running Lr and Ps simultaneously. Disk thrashing? Memory swapping? Slow performance? What is your machine configuration?
I have an Intel Dual 2 Core machine with 2Gb RAM and routinely run Lr (on Canon 20D raw files), Ps CS3 beta, Bridge, email client, and Firefox web client all at the same time with little issue.
And have you consulted Adobe's knowledge base for performance tips?

  • Imaq 3.0 Driver, How much memory do I need to run Snap.vi?

    (1) When I am using ROI in the Snap.vi, the array should be in order of Left, Bottom, Right and Top to work it right, which is different from what Help says, that is, Left, Top, Right and Bottom. Which one is right?
    (2) How much memory do I need to run the Snap.vi? 3.0 Driver seems to need more memory than 2.5.1 Driver did. I have 255 MB RAM on my computer, but in reality, the memory usage is used over 255 MB to capture 640*480 picture.
Could you give me a comment about this memory issue?

    Hello GraceSun.
(1). The help menu is correct, the array should be Left, Top, Right, and Bottom for the ROI input.
(2). I am not sure exactly what behavior you are seeing with the memory problems in 3.0. You should be able to run an image snap no problem, the memory useage will vary, but will be much less than the RAM on your computer. Be sure that you are not running an IMAQ Create.vi inside of a loop.
Try running the example VI called HL Snap.vi, which can be found by going to Help&#187Find Examples. . . and browsing by directory structure. This VI should not be taking up too much RAM on your computer.
    Hope this helps!

  • How much memory (in buffers) is needed for a simple webservice's call?

    Dear expert,
I'm doing a research work about analysing the main memory usage in SAP ERP systems.
I would like to find out the space that a simple webservice's call occupies in the buffers, but there is always something occupying the buffers. I know that my call to get the values occupies memory, that's why I use a webservice to get them (to avoid the SAPGUI), I call first $SYNC and I use a BAPI similar to the transaction ST02.
So could someone help me to find out the way to mesure the memory used by a single webservice's call (it's a very simple, just to create a material)? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for that. Will try.

Subject: How much memory (RAM) is needed for Elements 9 to automatically fill in the edges when using photome
The key to successful use of edge fill is to ensure that you've got all the memory allocated to PSE that you can and that the file that results after you merge the panoramic is not too big. When PSE 9 first came out about a year ago, I fooled around with file sizes and I think that on my particular computer the merged file had to be no larger than 20 megs for edge fill to work. I did a quick search through this forum's history but I couldn't find my posts. Maybe somebody else can find them.
