RAM upgrade not recognized on MacBook Pro

i have an
I have a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz (2008). Max RAM capability is 4GB. I know I bought the right config (2x 2GB) but only one is showing up under About this Mac. I'm a novice at such this sort of thing and would appreciate any help I can get. My poor Mac is slower than before. :-(

Have you bought the right type of RAM? Note that your Mac requires 667MHz DDR2 RAM. What you can try is to swap the memory modules (put the RAM module you have in one slot in the other one, and so on) to see if this is a problem with the slot or with the module.
If the problem only happens with one RAM module, I would recommend you to return that RAM module and get another one.

  • Ram upgrade (not sure which macbook pro 13" model I have)

Hello everyone, I have two questions:
The first being that I am needing to upgrade my ram from the standard 4gb to an 8gb. I was wondering if its possible for me to expand that up to 16 gb with my specific model having a 2.3 i5 processor with a memory of 4gb 1333 mhz ddr3.
Second would be if there are brands that are compatible with macs, the reason being that I am a student and cannot afford much.
I have done some researched and tried to look up these specification, but even with the apple guidelines, still left me confused as to how this process has to be done. I have experience with doing this for a pc, but not on a mac.
I'd greatly appreciate any input or advice, thank you very much!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
As your MacBook Pro has got an Intel Core i5 processor and 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM, you have got a 2011 MacBook Pro.
You can install up to 16 GB of RAM. As you want to install 8 GB of RAM, you can buy one module of 8 GB or two modules of 4 GB. I recommend you the last one, because it will give you Dual Channel, which will improve performance a bit.
You can buy RAM at OWC or Crucial. Some types of RAM cause problems with Macs, like Kingston ValueRAM. Apart from that, any RAM should work, but OWC and Crucial sell tested RAM

  • Samsung 840 evo ssd not recognized in macbook pro 2011

    Hello Apple Support Forum,
I am trying to upgrade the hdd in macbook pro for ssd. I've formated the SSD in Mac format in another macbook air via USB, and installed the SSD in the main bay. However, after I booted using OS X mavericks usb drive, the OS X installer does not regonize the SSD. Can any one offer some adivce or suggestions? I am pretty sure that the disk is physically installed corrected in the mai bay.
    Thanks!

    biglizheng,
have you checked to see if your SSD is recognized by your MacBook Pro externally, via USB? If it’s accessible externally, then you could run the Mavericks installer to do a clean install onto the external SSD. It will be slow, since it will be limited by your USB port’s transfer rate, but it should get the task done. Once the external installation process has completed, you can hold down an Option key while restarting your MacBook Pro, and it should list the SSD as one of the drives from which you can boot. If you can boot from it and run Mavericks from it, then the problem could be with your internal SATA cable rather than with the SSD. (HDDs can be more forgiving of faulty SATA cables than SSDs are, which could explain why it didn’t affect your HDD.)

  • Ram Upgrade Issues:  Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 2.53GHz

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro RAM from the native 4G  (2x2G modules) to 8Gb (2x4G modules).  Restarting didn't seem to create any issues, everythig was zipping along, and all appeared well.  A few minutes into basic navigating the screen dimmed and I was prompted to restart?!  I restarted and all seemed well again.  BUT, when I opened my browser (didn't matter which one) it would prompt me sixty seconds later that the application "crashed" and I needed to restart it (I-photo, I-tunes, etc. - didn't matter) NEXT UP - I would get get kicked out of applications that I had to Log into (Gmail, on-line banking, etc.) Each time the screen would dim like a shade was being pulled and I would be prompted to restart?!  I replaced the 2 - 2G modules and all is well again.  The memory was purchased from a reputable vendor and the specs. were all matched. ****I have not had the opportunity to run any Apple Hardware tests yet - I was hoping that maybe someone else had similar issues?!  Any ideas and info. are greatly appreciated!!!!!!
Currently running Lion (unhappily... - but at least the 8G made the rainbow wheel spin faster!!)
    Thanks!

try a PRAM reset next time you install the memory.
also make sure your system sees it. simply go to  upper left corner, about this mac. it'll tell you how much ram your computer is reading.
Contact that vendor about your issue.

  • IPod Video 5G Not recognized on MacBook Pro 17 Intel

My Ipod video 5G is not showing in iTunes or on my desktop. Not showing in System Profiler either. The ipod does charge however. I'm frustrated and stumped. I've tried the 5Rs a number of times but can't even get to the "Restore" portion. iPod works fine when not connected to my MacBook Pro. I also have a Nano and a 3G ipod (firewire) that both work fine and are recognized and update without a problem.
Anyone have an answer to getting the iPod video recognized....? Apple?

  • IPod (almost) not recognized by MacBook Pro

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro recently stopped recognizing my old 3rd generation iPod. I've been connecting the iPod to the computer using a FireWire cable with no problems for almost six months now, but something has suddenly changed. I used to be able to synch my iPod with iTunes no problem. Now, the iPod doesn't appear in iTunes, nor does it appear on the desktop. The only place where I'm able to see any evidence of the iPod is if I go to the System Profiler. There, under the FireWire section, it indicates that the iPod is connected.
The iPod itself is also evidencing some problems. When I try to start the iPod, the folder icon flashes on the screen, indicating that it can't find any of the files that used to be on the iPod hard drive. If turned on once, the iPod will continually restart on its own until the battery is discharged. If I plug the iPod into the computer, the iPod says "Disk Mode, Okay to Disconnect." The battery is also charged as usual.
This problem has me pretty stumped, since the iPod was working fine with this system for so long. Another difficulty is that none of the Apple support documents seem to directly address this situation. Most pages usually tell me to either reset the iPod using iTunes (not possible in this case) or reset it using the iPod Updater utility, which no longer seems to be available for download from the Apple website (the download link just takes me to the iTunes website).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you,
    Adrian

Does anyone know at least if the iPod updater is still available? It used to appear on my computer after a software update every now and again, but I deleted it as soon as I used it to get my iPod software up to date. I don't know if this tool would be able to recognize the iPod if it doesn't show up in iTunes or on the Desktop, but I figure it may look a little bit harder.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

  • IPhone 4s not recognized by MacBook Pro nor iTunes

I am currently running iOS 6.0.1 on my iPhone 4s and OS X 10.9.4 on my MacBook Pro Retina Late 2012. I recently reformatted my computer by means of a bootable OSX installer and I did a completely clean install. For some reason, my iPhone is able to charge, but not recognized by my computer nor iTunes at all. Nothing comes up.
I have followed the directions in the following:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591?viewlocale=en_US
    and
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24169239#24169239#24169239
Neither solution seems to be working. I have done the following:
    reinstalled my iTunes multiple times
reset my networking on my iPhone a few times
    restarted my computer
    updated all my software
checked to make sure USB cables work
    tried multiple iPhone charging cables
I'd greatly appreciate some guidance in regards to this. Thanks!

When you say a bootable OS X installer where did you get the installer?  Is it one you created yourself?
You might want to try restarting the MacBook Air holding the Command and R keys.  From Utilities on the menu bar, choose Install Mac OS X.  That will reinstall using an installer from Apple.  Install and see if that changes the behavior.
I did the following from this website:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2056561/how-to-make-a-bootable-mavericks-install -drive.html
    Option 1: Use createinstallmedia
Hidden inside the Mavericks installer is a Unix program calledcreateinstallmedia, provided by Apple for creating a bootable Mavericks installer. If you’re comfortable using Terminal, it’s a relatively simple tool to use. The program assumes your account has administrator privileges.
Note: This method does not work in Snow Leopard. It works only in Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks. (The resulting installer drive will let you install Mavericks over Snow Leopard, but you can’t create the installer drive while booted into Snow Leopard.) If you need to create a Mavericks install drive while booted into Snow Leopard, you should use the Disk Utility instructions, below.
Download the Mavericks installer from the Mac App Store and make sure it’s in your main Applications folder. (This means that if you followed my advice to move the installer out of your Applications folder, you’ll have to move it back, at least temporarily. The Terminal command I’m using here assumes the installer is in its default location.)
Connect to your Mac a properly formatted 8GB (or larger) drive. Rename the drive to Untitled. (The Terminal command used here assumes the drive is named Untitled.)
    Select the text of this Terminal command and copy it:sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
    Launch Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities).
Paste the copied command into Terminal and press Return. Warning: This step will erase the destination drive or partition, so make sure it doesn’t contain any valuable data.
Enter your admin-level account password when prompted.
The Terminal window displays the progress of the process, in a very Terminal sort of way, by displaying a textual representation of a progress bar: Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%...20%... and so on. The program then tells you it’s copying the installer files, making the disk bootable, and copying boot files. Wait until you see the text Copy Complete. Done. (see the screenshot below), which could take as long as 20 or 30 minutes, depending on how fast your Mac can copy data to your destination drive.
You now have a bootable Mavericks-install drive.

  • Striped RAID not recognized by Macbook Pro

I have a pair of external firewire 250GB drives that I had configured into a striped RAID set on my Powerbook Titanium. I recently purchased a Macbook Pro. When I plug the drives into the new machine, they are not recognized and the array (and I use the term loosely since it only refers to a pair of drives!) will not mount. When I launch DIsk Utility, the drives appear in the list and are offline. I cannot find a way to bring the thing online.
When I created the RAID, I used Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. The disk set still works fine on my Powerbook and checks out fine with Disk Utility on that machine.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how to use my striped set on my new machine?

    Hi, P. J.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you, but — seeing as how your question has gone unanswered — I thought I'd offer the following hypothesis: I suspect it may have something to do with the different partitioning schemes used by PPC and Intel-based Macs.
Theoretically, "Any Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.4 and later can mount GPT-partitioned disks," per "Technical Note TN2166, "Secrets of the GPT." However, the RAID you created on your PPC-based Mac used the APM (Apple Partition Map) scheme.
Perhaps all the bugs haven't been worked out, esp. concerning RAID. For example, there is a known issue that some Intel-based Macs cannot boot from RAID volumes.
You may want to try your question on the MacBook Pro Discussion to see if others with your same Mac have had better luck. I'd also suggest providing more details (manufacturer, make, model, etc.) of the FireWire drives you've used in the RAID. If both are from the same manufacturer, then you might also want to check with the manufacturer to see if they've had similar reports.
One option, albeit a good bit of work, would be to backup the contents of the RAID to another drive, then recreate the RAID on your Intel-based Mac, restore the data, and see if that works on both your PPC- and Intel-based Macs.
    Good luck!

  • Apple ID password not recognized on MacBook Pro

When initially setup, iCloud recognized my Apple ID and PW on my MacBook Pro; now as of today, it registers the password as invalid, so I reset the password using Apple password 'genie': iPhone and iCloud (web) both recognize my (new) password as valid, Apple Support recongizes my password, but iCloud (MacBook Pro) does not.
There seems to be no recourse w/in iCloud to go any further.

    Hi Laramar,
You may need to change the information on your iPhone:
    iPhone User Guide:

  • Momentus XT 750, 7200rpm not recognized by MacBook Pro 2,2, 2.33MHz

I bought a Momentus XT 7200rpm, 750GB hybrid drive from Newegg for my MacBook Pro 2,2, 2.33MHz.  I was running Lion. Disk Utility cannot format the drive  (I/O error). Disk utility saw it as a 5.5TB drive!?! Thinking I had a defective drive, I returned it to Newegg and they promptly sent me another drive which did the same thing. I do not want to send the second one back without exhausting other possibilities (drivers, firmware etc).  Can anyone help mw with this? I have 4MB of RAM installed which is above the 3MB max, but the computer seems to see all 4 and works fine, though slow with Lion.  I have returned to Snow Leopard to see if this will be faster, though it may be the hard drive which has only 40 of 320GB available.
    Thanks all.

    Hello Jack,
Could you tell me if you were able to install the 750gb hybrid drive correctly? Is it running well? Have you experienced any problems?
    Thank you

  • HP scanner not recognized by MacBook Pro 17" 2010

New Macbook Pro user (arrived from the factory last week) with OSX 10.6.8. Trying to get my HP scanjet 7400C to work. It's certainly not being recognized. When I look up how to install a scanner in the help it dumps me to the print and fax dialog. No indication in this dialog how to set up or use a scanner. No scan tab. No scanner options at all that I can see.
How do I install a scanner?

    Hello Jeff,
I have the same problem trying to connect an HP 7400C Scanner to my MacBook Pro 17" (2011) running Snow Leopard.  I tried downloading the drivers from HP Support Drivers (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=219&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw _lang=&product=59553#N160).  The web page indicates that it supports OS 10.3, but does not identify any later version of OSX that is supported.  When I download that package, it is not recognized as an installable image.
I am wondering what drivers and support software you downloaded and installed?
    Thanks for your help!

  • 8gb RAM upgrade for 2012 13" MacBook Pro?

I have a 2012 13" i5 2.5GHz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM running Yosemite. I'm considering upgrading to 8GB and was wanting to ask how much difference will it make to my computer's performance. The apps I use most are safari, iPhoto for RAW photo editing, iTunes, Xcode, Mail, Calendar and Pages. I'm also going to be using GarageBand soon. I would like to be able to use several of these programs at the same time. Would you say it is worth the upgrade?

About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • IPhone 4S not recognized by MacBook Pro

    Mac OS X Lion - Version 10.7.4
    iPhone 4S
Tried troubleshooting all over the internet on this one and have finally given up after countless attempts. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
So my iPhone 4S works fine with one exception, it will not take a charge or sync on my MacBook Pro anymore. Not sure what I did (or what update did it) but I'd like to fix the issue if possible.
I have an iPod shuffle, iTouch and iPad 2, all of which sync fine on the MacBook Pro.
The iPhone 4S charges in my car, through all wall outlets and is set up on iCloud and syncs fine with iPhoto, iCal, and any purchases made on iTunes. The big reason I need to get this fixed is to move the videos I have on my iPhone onto my MacBook.
I've tried different cords, restarting both the MacBook Pro and iPhone, resetting the iPhone etc. etc.
I'm at a loss other than taking the iPhone and MacBook into an Apple store. I feel like I've read countless threads on this same issue but no real fixes.
    Does anyone have a solution?

Thought I would add a quick update.
I tried plugging my iPhone 4S into a different MacBook Pro and no response there either.
Safe to assume it's the phone at this point???
Think I may just take it to the Apple Store if nobody has any ideas.

  • Leopard dvd not recognized by macbook pro

    hello,
i have a macbook pro running 10.4.10 and it doesn't recognize the leopard installation dvd. the same dvd works on my G4 and was successful with the upgrade. the macbook just ejects the dvd after i insert it. i am able to play movie dvd's and/or cd's on the same macbook pro.
    need help please.
    thank you!

    Hi coredumped,
I had the same problem today. I took my macbook pro to the Apple Store and they installed Leopard using a firewire drive. I don't really consider this a solution because my computer still ejects the Leopard disc after about 20 seconds and I can't update the Bootcamp drivers. If those things don't matter to you, you might just take it to an Apple Store (if that's an option).

  • IPhone Camera not recognized by MacBook Pro

My camera is neither being recognized by Image Capture, nor by iPhoto.
This was working fine (iPhoto auto-launching to download the camera roll) before my vacation, and now I have 1000+ pictures on my iPhone that I want to download.
During my vacation I changed timezones, used airplane mode, etc.
Is there any way to get all of these photos off my iPhone without wiping the entire thing?
The whole phone still works properly, it still takes photos (I'm up to 1094 now).
Thus far I've tried rebooting everything, turning the iPhone off for a while, letting it be plugged into my laptop over night... Nothing works so far.
