Ram Upgrade on Satellite P500 - from 4GB to 6 GB

I get the feeling that I'm asking a stupid question but here goes.
Just bought a P500 with 4Gb memory and decided to go with the recommended 2Gb upgrade. Went to install the ram chip and could only find 2 slots both of which are occupied with the existing 2Gb chips.
Is there another expansion slot that I'm missing or have I been sold a lemon in the form of the recommended 2Gb upgrade?
Thanks and Happy New Year

Hey,
No, there is no hidden RAM slot because notebooks are equipped with 2 RAM slots only but usually its enough.
So for an upgrade you have to buy a 4GB module and replace it with one 2GB module. The other 2GB module you can still use, then you an amount of 6GB. :)

    According to this,
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-2-duo-3.06-21-inch-al uminum-late-2009-specs.html
which is the oldest 21.5 inch iMac I could find, this model came with 4 GB standard RAM and can be upgraded to 16 GB.
Whether you will notice a difference depends on what you use the computer for. If you use programs like Adobe Photoshop, MS-Office, or have many photos and lots of music in iphoto and itunes, you would see a noticeable improvement. Also, if you keep a lot of software running at once, there will be a very big improvement in speed and responsiveness.

  • I need to upgrade my MBP 2011 from 4GB RAM to 8GB.

I wonder if anyone could help me. I am trying to upgrade DIY the RAM of my MacBook Pro 2011 15 inch, and I want to know what brands of RAM memories are Mac certified? and good quality? Corsair? Crucial? or Ramjet? or none of these?
    Thanx

At Crucial you enter your exact model and year of machine and it will tell you.
To double check, download the free MacTracker program.
Check under the Apple menu > About this Mac > More information to confirm your exact Mac model.
You might need special tools to open the Mac, check with iFixit and Other World Computing for video, instructions and tools needed.
Remember you might only have two RAM slots available filled with (example) 2 -1GB RAM modules so if you go and buy the less expensive 2 -1GB RAM modules thinking your going to get 4GB your going to be in for quite a shock.
Lot's of first time RAM buyers make this mistake because they only open the machine when the RAM arrives.
It's good to have a plastic compartment to hold each screw and a mat to catch fallen screws, they are extremely tiny and easy to strip the heads so be gentle.
Also follow the anti-static guidelines and ground yourself before working inside, remove the power and the battery cable if possible.
    Read your Apple manual too.
If you mess up inside, Apple will not cover it!
It's possible to add more RAM than the Apple manual says because new RAM modules get made after the manual goes to print, so check with MacTracker to see if you can add more RAM that Apple says.

  • RAM Upgrade on Satellite L30-11D

My brother has a Satellite L30-11D and he has bought an additional 2GB RAM to upgrade from 512MB.
HE has sent me an email - extract below, but does not get regular access to Internet and therefore no time to post this.
My laptop had 512 MB ram and I was told by Toshiba etc that it could be upgraded to 2 GB. I obtained 2 x 1 GB cards installed them.
The problem is that if I remove the 512 MB card the laptop doesn't see the GB cards at all, so I put the 512 card back in and that was OK, then I put a 1GB card in and that worked OK, thinking it might be a dud card I triedthe other card plus the 512 and that works.
Also if I put either one of the GB cards on their own in it works.
According to Toshiba the computer can be upgraded to 2 GB RAM - so what am I doing wrong.
    Any ideas would be appreciated."

    Hi
I googled and found this Satellite L30-11D specification page:
    http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=UK&com.broadvis ion.session.new=Yes&PRODUCT_ID=128130
According to this page the Sat L30-11D can be upgraded to 2GB RAM (2 x 1GB)
You should use the 200pin DDR2 RAM (533 MHz) modules.
I think the notebook does not recognize the 2GB RAM due to the compatibility issues You should try RAM modules from another manufacturer. Maybe Kingston would be ok.

  • BSOD after RAM upgrade on Satellite L350-14F

    Hi,
    I have a L350-14F and i upgraded my ram with 2x2GB PC5300- 667mHz
When i start the laptop in the bios i see 4096 of ram but when i restart the laptop i have a bleu screen.
    PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
    STOP: 0x0000004E (0x0000008D, 0x00090ET2, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
windows vista 32 bit sp2 French
    bios 1.5

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291806/ (add fr to this link to read it in French) faulty memory module is one of possible source of such errors.
Also it may be caused by driver. And this is the worst case, because any 32-bit (actually x86) windows can NOT operate with 4GBs of RAM due to its architecture (there are some "virtual disk drivers" that can do this by tricks).
Memory addresses above 3GB (or 3.1-3.3 GBs) are reserved for hardware needs. This may interfere with OS memory management and causes BSOD. It is very hard to locate and fix it (at least remotely).
    1. Interchange modules with each other - bad contact may cause faults.
    2. Remove one module and test memory (memtest+ is the best tool for this), then replace it with the second one and test memory again. This may or MAY NOT show defective module.
    3. If modules seem to be OK after memory tests, you can try any live linux distro (e.g. Ubuntu). If it falls down you will be sure about faulty memory.
If not - replace this pair with another model/brand. Doesn't matter whether or not modules are in "compatibility list" for your laptop - practical way is the only way.
    But this may be iterative.
And first of all - check manual for memory configuration (2 GBs, 2+2GBS, 2+1GBs) and memory type (PC5300- 667mHz etc.).

  • After RAM upgrade on Satellite L30-10S only one RAM stick is recognized

I just added an 1GB Crucial Ram stick into the L30-10S (PSL33E), but only the 1GB get recognized, the Hyundai stick (512MB), which was supplied with the laptop, isn't been used by the system anymore.
I tried switch around, but I can only get 1 RAM stick to work at the time, either 1GB, when both rams are placed in the slots or if only the 1GB is installed or 512MB when I leave the 1GB out.
Did anyone actually managed to get 2 Stick running simultaneously, on this system?
BTW CPU-z did recognize both sticks and reports correctly 1536MB, the BIOS however only 1GB, actually less, since some is taking by the graphics card.
The BIOS version on my system is V2.80, dated 03/05/2007 and both memory are the same speed PC2-4200.

Did you really read all those topics???
    From http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=22405:
"I heard about a user how has Samsung 512mb and Kingmax 1gb ram in his L30 and everything is fine, he has no problem with it.
I have two 512mb Samsung modules and have no problem."
    From http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=23014:
"You can use 667Mhz modules, but they'll work on 533 Mhz. I read in another forum about a guy, how has 533Mhz and 667Mhz RAM in his L30, and he has no problem."
L30 series supports memory up to 2gb, and if you use memory from a reliable brand, you'll have no (compatibility) problem. Maybe Crucial ram is not the best choice. As I see all those guys have problem with Crucial ram. Something's wrong with it...
And don't forget something: opening a new topic won't help you, if nobody can solve the problem in another topics...
PS: Try Kingmax, Kingston, Samsung, Corsair modules. I never had problem with those brands.

  • Questions about ram upgrade of Satellite L100 (PSLA3L)

I have the above laptop and a new stick of Ram, don't have a manual however are there instructions for upgrading this?
I've opened the back and type of clip that holds the RAM is unfamiliar to me. I can see how it goes in but it doens't clip in easily which leads me to belive i'm missing somthing, either that or it requires an ungodly amount of force.
    Grateful for any assistance

Why you dont take a look into the user manual???
There is an detailed instruction placed ;)
Simply remove the cover, lift one side of the insulator sheet and fit the modules connectors into the computers connectors at about 45 degree angles. Press the module careful to ensure a firm connection.
Push the module down so it lies flat. Latches on either side will click into place to secure the module
    Thats all

  • MacBook Pro 13" (2012) non-retina ram upgrade.

Will upgrading my MBP 13" from 4GB to 8GB will make a big difference ?
MBP does get slow at times and i do tend to use 4+ apps most the time.
Will it boost my boot up time too ?

Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
Does it help to have more RAM? Usually, "yes", if you are running out of RAM during use. You may find that the computer seems faster, but this is because memory shortage is bogging things down.
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • Basic RAM upgrade question

    Hi,
I've read a lot of threads on ram upgrades, but still have a very basic question. I want to buy the $599 Mac Mini, which comes with 1G RAM. Clearly, the Mac RAM is overpriced, but I've been told by a friend to upgrade to at least 2G for $50 extra. I realize Crucial and others sell it cheaper, but I don't know about my ability to put it in.
Is it worth another $100 to go from 2G to 4G. Will I see a noticeable performance increase if I'm using iMovie, Photoshop or Final Cut Express? Or surfing? Are we talking about a few extra seconds when rendering video but no other noticeable effects? I plan to keep this machine for our family machine now that my child is using iWeb.
I'm sorry if this has been answered, but I'm on a very tight budget and worried about my job in this economy. Thanks for your help.

If you are on a tight budget and have any concern about on-going warranty support for a new mini, then it is a better proposition to buy the $50 upgrade to 2Gb from Apple than to do the RAM upgrade yourself and go to 4Gb for little more. It's not that the upgrade is particularly difficult because it isn't, but if you are not reasonably confident in your skills and something goes wrong, Apple could declare the warranty void due to the work you've done on the inside of the system.
There is a notable performance gain to be had from 4Gb as opposed to 2Gb, but much of the difference is less than obvious, particularly if you are careful about what apps you have running at any time. Running Photoshop, for example, would cause the system to slow down if you then launch another major app such as iMovie, but running it alone in 2Gb RAM would give you respectable performance. Final Cut Express isn't particularly demanding on the system so should run well, as would the vast majority of Intel-native applications. It's only if you are running any non-native processes (applications, drivers etc) that 2Gb would prove notably limiting.
If it were me, I'd probably opt for the base model, buy 4Gb RAM from Crucial and do the upgrade myself. Next choice would be the base model, buy the RAM from Crucial and have a local Apple Approved Service Provider do the work for me - some AASPs charge a reasonable fee for this. Third choice would be to buy the base model with Apple-supplied 2Gb RAM and then at a later time replace that with 4Gb from Crucial as and when funds and circumstances reasonably permit it.

I don't see any DDR3L on the page for the RAM that would fit your model -> http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_133 3MHz_SDRAM.
But the answer is that it doesn't really matter - just make certain to get 1333MHz.

  • Battery life diminished from 7Hs to 3Hs after a 4Gb- 8Gb RAM Upgrade. MacBook i5 Late 2011 Os 10.7.5

I upgraded RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb on a 3 months-old MacBook Pro. Before that, my battery used to last 6-7hs and now it hardly lasts 3.5Hs
I also noticed that the cooler almost never stops, and the computer feels HOT.
As a developer, I give the Mac an instensive use, runing an Oracle database within a Windows XP (I'm sorry) virtual machine with VMWare.
At the same time I run Oracle Reports and Oracle SQL Developer on the MAC side and TeamViewer to connect to my remote customers' servers.
Before upgrading RAM, the memory usage used to be 100% and the performance was poor. Now the performance is much better, the memory usage is around 75% but the battery is much weaker. Shouldn't be the other way around, as now the hard disk RAM pagination should be less?
Is that normal???? What can I do, other than going back to 4Gb and see what happens? Will it help if I upgrade to Mountain Lion?
    Thank you!!

I am worried I am having the exact same problem with my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. I purchased an SSD from Crucial as well as two 8GB RAM sticks, which upgraded my RAM from a total of 4 GB to a total of 16 GB. I swapped the drive and RAM when I received my order in late February. Now, just a couple of weeks later, I am experiencing issues. The fan seems to be running a lot more often, and yesterday my MacBook went haywire. I took some video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrcv0iU3Ic I ran the apple hardware test (the basic one, not the extended one) and it did not find any issues. These are the things I purchased: CT5419725 CT512MX100SSD1.PK01 UPGRADE FOR A APPLE MACBOOK PRO (13-INCH, EARLY 2011) SYSTEMandCT3373717 CT2K8G3S1339M.000 UPGRADE FOR A APPLE MACBOOK PRO (13-INCH, EARLY 2011) SYSTEM If the 2011 MacBooks can't handle 16GB of RAM, I'd like to return it and do 8 instead. you can upgrade to 16GB if you wish to do so...
average price for 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 is around $50 - $75 depending on the brand.
why not spend $100 and go with 16GB 1333MHz from Crucial or Corsair.
you can get them from Amazon.com or newegg.com
