RAM upgrade up to 8GB on Satellite C660-180

Hey guys,
Thanks a lot for taking a look at my post.
I have Satellite C660-108. I'm thinking of upgrading ram from 3 GB up to 8 GB.
I will be very grateful if someone could answer my questions before I make a purchase.
This is a Ram model. I'm thinking of buying.
Kingston HyperX Plug in and Play DDR3 1600MHz CL9 8GB SODIMM Memory Module
I wonder if it would fit to my laptop ?
Also I found this on C660-108
Type : Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD
memory amount : up to 1,273 MB shared memory with 3 GB system memory installed, and up to 1,696 MB with 4 GB system memory, (with pre-installed 64-bit operating system)
memory type : shared .
If I upgrade ram up to 8 GB would it mean that my graphics system memory will be up to 3,392 MB as well ?
Thank you so much.
Kit

According to Toshiba notebook spec page, the 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB) are definitely possible.
Kingston is a good RAM manufacturer and provide good quality modules.
The RAM modules should support following sepcs:
DDR3 1066MHz (PC3-8500)
The CPU PENTIUM P6100 (2.00GHZ) supports an 1.066MHZ FSB and therefore the PC3-8500 should run at full speed 1066MHz
> f I upgrade ram up to 8 GB would it mean that my graphics system memory will be up to 3,392 MB as well ?
More RAM means a bigger part can be shared with the GPU but this is controlled by graphic card driver automatically.

I have a mid 2010 Mac mini with 2GB of RAM. My question is - Should I upgrade the RAM to 4GB or 8GB?
    Thank you, DZetko

It's is better to go for the full 8GB upgrade now,
that way you will not have to upgrade again when OS X and your personal usage demand more.

  • RAM Upgrade...8GB to 16GB?

I have the upper model 21.5"  2011 iMac model 12,1. I currently have 8GB of ram and I'm considering upgrading to 16GB. My question is...will I notice an appreciable difference? The machine does not seem slow at all so I have no reason to upgrade, I just have the money and I like the idea of it being "maxed out". All I use the machine for is World of Warcraft and internet usage...mail, web browsing, etc. I do a minimal amount of photo organization in iPhoto, but that's about it. Do you think I would see a benefit in upgrading, or would that money be better spent on something else?
    Thanks!

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Which configuration of iMac 27" ?  Fusion drive or not ? RAM upgrade ?

I'd love to get a new 27" iMac for my Mother, but cannot decide if the higher i7 processor (3.5) is worth the price, and cannot decide if the 3TB "Fusion" drive is worth the extra $350.
The retail Apple stores stock the i7 only with the 3TB Fusion drive, the better graphics card, and stock 8GB of RAM, but one can configure the machine if ordering on-line via the link below.   Her husband will reimburse me or it will be a gift.  Money is not the issue.... just whether or not the money is worth spending.
One last thing:  The apple store rep said that the "Geniuses" have to do the RAM upgrade, say from 8GB to 32GB because the 21" unit has to be opened.  So the consumer doing the RAM upgrade will void the warranty. Yet I see website indicating that the 21" has a nice convenient door to open and the RAM is user-upgradable without voiding the warranty.  Which is true ?
Apple wants to charge $600 (parts and labor) for the RAM upgrade to 32GB.   But Crucial has 32MB of this RAM for under $300 with a lifetime warranty.  Is there a reason to use the RAM from Apple ?

    1. 27" iMac with 3.4Ghz i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 775M with 2GB video memory is just $200 more than 27" iMac with 3.2Ghz i5 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB video memory. How much is her time worth per hour? If it's for business use, it pays for itself quickly. Same opinion for the 'build-to-order' upgrades in speed and video available on the 27" i7.
    2. Fusion drive is a hybrid combining 128GB SSD with either a 1TB or 3TB rotating platter hard drive.

Conclusions and performance are on pages 5 and 6 of the review.
    3. 27" iMac RAM is "user-replacable", quoting from the 2013 'Important Product Information' addendum to the manual:
    "Do Not Make Repairs Yourself
Your iMac doesn’t have any user-serviceable parts, except for memory, which is user-replaceable in 27-inch models only. Do not attempt to open your iMac. If your iMac needs service, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple for service.
If you open your iMac or install items other than memory in 27-inch models, you risk damaging your equipment. Such damage isn’t covered by the limited warranty on your iMac."
    quoted from http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1662/en_US/imac_late2013_ipig.pdf
OWC video of the 27" RAM upgrade installation: http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_27inch_late_2012_mem_m/
    4. If it's for business, go for the i7 and the video upgrade.
    5. I'd do the upgrade myself, purchasing from a reliable vendor of Apple RAM such as crucial.com or macsales.com. I have no experience with the other vendor you mentioned, RAMfinder.com. Factory-installed RAM offers the pricey convenience of having a machine configured by you online and shipped directly to your mother in a few days with no one else needing to be involved.  I'd avoid any Apple salesperson who apparently doesn't know the 27" iMac product well enough to give you the truth about user-installable RAM upgrades. OWC (macsales.com) will purchase system-pull original RAM allowing you to recoup a small portion of the cost of the upgrade, though nothing close to the resale price of the RAM.

  • Satellite C660-2Q8 does not start with 8GB RAM

hello i have a toshiba satellite c660-2q8 laptop,
when i got it it only had 1g of Ram i now have got 8g of RAM for it but as soon as i fit it the laptop starts like normal with the BIOS screen then i get a black screen with a flashing - and thats it.
After some time it will restart and do it again.
I have contacted the place i got the RAM it.
The RAM is right and there said it was the BIOS that needs updating but it is version 1.50 and will not update cos it is up to date if i put the old RAM back it boots fine
    can some one please help

Its NOT BIOS issue but the RAM modules are NOT compatible.
Even if the guys says that the RAM module are right, obviously they are NOT
The 4GB Genuine Toshiba PC3 DDR3 (1333MHz) Memory Module PA3918U-1M4G should be OK and should work properly.
Also the Kingston modules are great and provide good quality.
Cheaper modules might not be fully compatible or would not work properly.

  • Satellite L675-122 8GB ram Upgrade

I have just upgraded my laptop from 4GB PC3 10600 to 8GB Kingston PC3 12800. The bios reads the memory to 8GB but later on while windows are loading, blue screen appears.I have already udpated the bios to the latest version 2.30. Any suggestions?

When looking through the forum, they are quite a few threads exactly like this.
    1.  upgrade from 4gb to 8gb
    2.  everything  good, except resume from "suspend".    (hibernate works fine also)
    3.  when resuming from "suspend" ,    fan speeds up for 2 secs -- and hard shutdown.
There clearly is an issue with the Toshiba laptop(s) when upgrading 4GB to 8GB.
Windows MemTest shows the memory is okay.
Also, all of my applications are blazing fast now with the Kingston memory module upgrade KTT1066D3/4G
Again, the only issue is when trying to resume from suspend.
@MadRN, maybe you can help me figure out a process to get this fixed.   I do not know what to do, and this is critical.     It doesn't look like Toshiba has done anything to ever addresss the issue.  Thanks.

  • Satellite C660-1G2 - gaming impossible due to low RAM

    Hi
I bought this year the model C660-1G2 (intel I3 core processing) Ram memory is 2+1, max of 8
Now, children wants to play games, and we see the need is _256MB video._
We are discovering only _64MB_ available for video memory.
    *Please,*
**how we can extend this to more ?*thx thx !*

    Hi mate
The graphic shares a part of the main memory automatically.
This is controlled by graphic card driver!
So you cannot change this manually.
But you could upgrade the notebooks RAM!
The notebook supports the DDR3 1066MHz (PC3-8500) modules and the memory could be upgraded up to 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB)

According to the spec above, there are two slots and you can have up to 8 GB of DDR3 RAM (1,066 MHz).

  • Re: Satellite A660 - No boot after RAM upgrade

    I have just gotten 8GB of RAM for my Satellite A660, it is Corsair CM3X4GSD1066 4GB PC-8500 (1066MHz) 204-pin SO-DIMM DDR3 RAM CL7.
The system posts fine and the 8GB is showing up in BIOS but once its clears post and goes to load Windows it stops on the black screen, the cursor flashes a few times then it stops. I have left it for about 5 minutes and it wont boot through.
    Please Help.
I have replaced the 4GB sticks and it works fine.

    Hello
For me it sounds like that the modules are not compatible or have defective sectors
As Akuma wrote, such performance modules are risky in notebook because you dont have any options to change the latency values as on desktop computers. So I always prefer Kingston modules for notebook RAM upgrade.
But before you buy other modules, try a BIOS update and load the default settings.

Based on the information that you have supplied, you have a Early or Late 2008 MBP.  Maximum RAM that it will accept is 6 GB with the following specifications:   200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Corsair RAM is compatible with your Mac and the Early 2011 MacBook Pro supports 16 GB of memory. Make sure you buy the correct memory for your MacBook Pro. See > http://www.corsair.com/us/memory-by-product-family/mac-memory-upgrades.html

You have got a Mid 2010 13-inch MacBook Pro, and it supports up to 16 GB of RAM, so you can install 8 GB of RAM. You can buy more memory at OWC or Crucial

  • Battery life diminished from 7Hs to 3Hs after a 4Gb- 8Gb RAM Upgrade. MacBook i5 Late 2011 Os 10.7.5

I upgraded RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb on a 3 months-old MacBook Pro. Before that, my battery used to last 6-7hs and now it hardly lasts 3.5Hs
I also noticed that the cooler almost never stops, and the computer feels HOT.
As a developer, I give the Mac an instensive use, runing an Oracle database within a Windows XP (I'm sorry) virtual machine with VMWare.
At the same time I run Oracle Reports and Oracle SQL Developer on the MAC side and TeamViewer to connect to my remote customers' servers.
Before upgrading RAM, the memory usage used to be 100% and the performance was poor. Now the performance is much better, the memory usage is around 75% but the battery is much weaker. Shouldn't be the other way around, as now the hard disk RAM pagination should be less?
Is that normal???? What can I do, other than going back to 4Gb and see what happens? Will it help if I upgrade to Mountain Lion?
    Thank you!!

I am worried I am having the exact same problem with my Early 2011 MacBook Pro. I purchased an SSD from Crucial as well as two 8GB RAM sticks, which upgraded my RAM from a total of 4 GB to a total of 16 GB. I swapped the drive and RAM when I received my order in late February. Now, just a couple of weeks later, I am experiencing issues. The fan seems to be running a lot more often, and yesterday my MacBook went haywire. I took some video of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQrcv0iU3Ic I ran the apple hardware test (the basic one, not the extended one) and it did not find any issues. These are the things I purchased: CT5419725 CT512MX100SSD1.PK01 UPGRADE FOR A APPLE MACBOOK PRO (13-INCH, EARLY 2011) SYSTEMandCT3373717 CT2K8G3S1339M.000 UPGRADE FOR A APPLE MACBOOK PRO (13-INCH, EARLY 2011) SYSTEM If the 2011 MacBooks can't handle 16GB of RAM, I'd like to return it and do 8 instead. Before I purchased the RAM, I did some reading online, and it seemed that 16GB would be OK, but now I'm not so sure. kate

you can upgrade to 16GB if you wish to do so...
average price for 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 is around $50 - $75 depending on the brand.
why not spend $100 and go with 16GB 1333MHz from Crucial or Corsair.
you can get them from Amazon.com or newegg.com

This is a customer forum, and not Apple folks.  If you wish official or formal Apple assistance, please call Apple directly or visit your local Apple store, or check directly with an Apple reseller.
I don't immediately see a MacBook5,4 around, but I do see a Apple MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz 15" model MC118LL/A Mid-2009, and that configuration does reportedly support up to 8 GB of memory per the Apple Specs.
Apple might not stock or offer memory upgrades that far back (but do ask them), though I'd expect various third-party memory providers will likely still have some 4 GB 1066 MHz SO-DIMM DDR3 memory sticks around.
But if yours is really a MacBook5,4 model here — the closest I can find is a MacBook5,2 — then ignore this.
