RAM woes, so what did I buy?

OK Got a really good deal (2X1GB modules) from a friend but these don't seem to fit. Here is what's on their labels (yes they are used, but I practically got them free).
1). "Samsung 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-4200s-444-12-E3" The rest look like a serial number.
2). "1GB DDR 2 533 SODIMM" Again, more of a serial number thing afterwards.
Pulled the stock 512, and tried to put the Samsung in... It looked like the notch was off by only a mm to fit. =( Is this totally incompatible RAM? I haven't even the tried the second yet. Can you guys already tell by the type that they are not gonna work? If so, can any of you identify what I did get? Any one want them? =P
I have a suspicion that these are for the PB after my 1.33Ghz (1.5-1.67Ghz).

Can you recommend what RAM does work with the pre-2005 PBs? I'm looking to upgrade my RAM to 1Gb.
(Actually, I already did upgrade my RAM to some generic brand, but I note an increased heat & fan function ever since I did that.)
Samsung seems to get a good recommendation, but I'm not sure on its compatibility.

  • Harddrive upgrade -- OS X instillation woes.  What did I do?

    Hello,
Recently I purchased a 1.33 iBook on ebay for my wife. Upon receiving it I swapped out the 40GB with a Seagate 100GB. I then installed OS 10.4 (not the iBook grey discs, but the retail version)
Well this caused problems, no mouse trackpad use, and more.
Now, the iBook install discs aren't recognized. Either they don't mount, or the computer says that it's blank or does not recognize it.
Oh, I did Erase the 100 with OS Journaled.
Now, I've never owned a computer so new that the OS retail version was older than the computer's needs.
What do I do now? I'm real close to reinstalling the 40. But if anyone can tell me how to fix this problem I'd appreciate it.
I've tried everything from target disc installing (with a 10.4.6) to external DVD drive istall.
If no one has a resolution... can someone atleast tell me what I've done?
    Thanks,
    Dzve

I then installed OS 10.4 (not the iBook grey discs, but the retail version)
Your 1.33GHz G4 iBook does not support using the retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4. Take a look at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
Chances are the "build" of Mac OS X 10.4 on the retail disks is not new enough to support your iBook. I would make sure to get the original disks with your eBay purchase. If they're not available, you can get a set of original install disks from AppleCare Support for about $60.

  • What did you buy that was more powerful than necessary... but totally worth it?

Hey folks, hope you guys will tune into this week'sOn the Air (10am CT on 7/15)where we are talking about "The MostPowerful Workstations in the Universe!"We're going to talk with HPand Spicehead Travis0729about why and when you need to go above and beyond regular consumer-grade laptops and desktops and what's available if you do.Of course, in these cases, usually the added power is warranted and makes sense. Today I'm more interested in when it's completely UNNECESSARY, but totally worth it.For me, it would definitely have to be my Vitamix blender. Not sure if any of you have one but this blender is so powerful it can actually heat up soup through the friction of the blades alone. You can even argue it's still easier to blend the soup and then heat it up separately, but no, it's not nearly as cool.

  • My appstore app shows an update available for CodeBox, which I did not buy, does anyone know what the problem could be? I don't think I have been hacked (no money subtracted, etc.)

    Hi all,
For some time now, my appstore app shows an update available for CodeBox, which I did not buy. When I try to update it it asks for my ID and password (all normal), but then it gives an Unknown Error.
I am 100% sure I didn't buy the app, I do not see any transaction on my card or in the appstore apart of this one, so does not seem to be a hack.
Does anyone know what is happening, this is a tricky thing which is making me lose trust in the payment/account system that Apple is using.
    Thanks!

  • Looking to upgrade my RAM to 8 GB, what should I buy?

This is the laptop I recently purchased to keel me over while I build a desktop over the next few months, my last laptop's Hardrive and Graphics Card burned out. Looking to upgrade the RAM from the measly 4 GB to 8 GB but I am unsure of what I should buy or if I can even upgrade the RAM at all. I've done some research through the HP guide to Upgrading Memory but it is very general. Much appreciation for any help.

  • Choice of RAM - Kingston, Crucial, etc - Who's buying what for new iMac?

There are SOOOO many types of RAM to order - what success and failure have people had with these different types. I've only ordered RAM one time, 2 years ago and it was Crucial - worked very well.
For my new iMac, however, Crucial is sold out of 2GB modules and they don't list an 'in-stock' date.
So far pricing looks like this for 4GB (2GB x 2)
    Crucial - $279.98
    OWC - $229.99
    Kingston (via Buy.com) - $281.98
There are others... like Patriot, PNY, Micron, etc... but I've never heard of most of them. What is everyone planning on using, or currently using and any suggestions??

    Hi Jeremy --
This is what I got from the Techworks web page:
    Lifetime Warranty
Manufactured with only premier components and materials
100% tested to guarantee compatibility with Apple systems
Designed to surpass all Apple Specifications
ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and RoHS Compliant
    Compatibility Guaranteed
    http://www.buffalotech.com/products/memory/techworks/
    http://www.buffalotech.com/products/memory/
It's marketed as Apple-specific, lifetime warranty, and at OWC the price compares favorably to Crucial and others.
Edit: note that the new iMacs use the same type of RAM as the MacBookPro Core2Duo. (SO-DIMMs) Yes, these iMacs are basically laptop internals stuck in a desktop Mac. So any of these will work:

    Hope that helps.

  • Intel mini RAM woes...

Ok, I'm pretty saavy when it comes to most things computer related but maybe I'm missing something on this one. I bought my Intel mini with the stock 512mb of RAM and decided I wanted to upgrade to 2gb. The price of RAM is fairly steep right now so I decided I would do this one stick at a time. I purchased my 1GB stick to get me going from Crucial (due to their reputation). I used their memory advisor to make sure I was ordering the correct memory for my machine and verified the memory matched what I ordered before it was installed. I installed the 1gb stick with one of the original 256mb sticks thinking I would maximize what I had available until I was able to purchase my second stick. After doing so I had nothing but problems. I kept getting spontaneous shutdowns and when booting up it would reboot itself sometimes 2 or 3 times before I could finally get to the desktop. So, I'm stumped. I've gone through and double checked that the memory was seated right, ran TechTool Pro 4, ran the Apple hardware test, reset my pram, reset my smc and even took out my 256mb stick to see if having an unmatched pair could be the issue. Everything looked fine and all tests passed. According to Crucial's website it is not "necessary" to have a pair of sticks in the mini to run properly. It even says I should be able to run different speeds and chip capacities. I was still getting the same result just the 1gb Crucial stick by itself. I have since put my 2 original 256mb sticks back in and all seems to be well. I know there is a possibility that I got a bad stick of RAM but I definitely have my doubts based on Crucial's reputation. I know how to handle computer components so I also highly doubt that I damaged the RAM. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to have a matching pair of sticks (size and speed)? I'm racking my brain on this one, hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on my dilemma.

Okay, new problem... I'm starting to think now that maybe my RAM woes were not RAM woes at all. I'm beginning to think that perhaps I have a failing hard drive. Right away after purchasing my Mac mini I took the original 80GB hdd out and replaced it with a brand new 120GB 5400rpm Seagate hdd. I started having these random shutdown problems and then yesterday after having my new 2GB's of RAM installed for about a week or so (and working flawlessly), I got the screen that tells me that I need to hold down the power button to restart my computer. I do so and it goes to this terminal type screen and runs through all kinds of command lines. I restarted and desktop came back up so I did a couple software updates (1 Airport update, 1 Security update). After that finishes the mini restarts and it hangs at the grey screen w/the apple. So, I shut the computer down and restarted and this time it gets to the 'OS X starting up' screen and hangs when the status bar reaches the end. So, I shut it down and restart yet again. It goes on and on like this and finally ends up getting to the desktop after roughly 6 restarts. I quickly back up everything on my computer and try a few more restarts to see the progression of the problem and try to troubleshoot. At one point I heard the hard drive click 2 times. After another round of numerous restarts I get back to the desktop and by this time alot of my programs were getting the beachball when opened and would never function (i.e. - Disk Utility, System Profiler & Safari). I put my Mac mini OS X install disc in and restarted to wipe everything out and see if my OS got messed up somewhere along the way and was causing my problems. As soon as it boots from the disc I got an error box informing me that It cannot install the OS but allows me to access Disk Utility. I erased and did a 1X pass zero out. I restarted my machine and yet again it hanged at the grey screen with the apple. I restarted a couple more times and now it just tells me it can not install the OS and shuts itself down within a few seconds of this message.
So, this is where I'm at now... Can anyone else confirm that this sounds hard drive related vs. RAM related? The only variable that has changed recently has been the RAM and I refuse to believe that I got bad RAM twice in a row from a company as reputable as Crucial.
Help me AndyO, you're my only hope! (yes, that was a nerdy Star Wars reference)

  • All the white areas of my display are a rapidly flashing pink grid! What did I knock loose?

I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 15-inch. I installed a Seagate 1TB SSHD into the optical drive slot a few months ago. It stopped working so I removed for return. I closed the thing up, turned it on, and suddenly (almost) all white spaces on my screen are now pink! A flashing pink grid, to be precise. For example, white icons on my desktop have a few flashing pink artifacts, and most of the white areas on pages in my browser (Chrome) are almost entirely pink.
I've opened the laptop many times before to install ram, HDDs, etc and I've never had any issue. FWIW, a few months ago the logic board was replaced by Apple due to the infamous graphics switching error.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? Could I have knocked something loose? Touched the wrong thing? Shocked the logic board?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have this exact problem - light gray is fine. Goes to pure white, and it raidly flashes a pink grid. Your post is the ONLY one I have seen just like it. And, I noticed no replies.   What did you do to remedy? Or, did you find out it was a fatal problem? Any insight would be helpful before I go spend a lot on diagnostics...
