  • I think I may have a virus on my MacBook laptop, ran disk utility, "filesystem verify failed." Help!

I'm running a MacBook laptop and thought I might have a virus b/c i was browsing online a couple of days ago when i clicked on a link that appeared to automatically start downloading a file. I tried to stop it from downloading by clicking "cancel" in the downloads box that came up, but it compleatly downloaded before i could hit cancel. No programs automatically opened and started runnning (that i could see), but I've noticed slow browsing since then.
I ran the disk utility, "verify disk," to see if there were any problems. It came back with this error message: "First aid failed: Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered:
    Filesystem verify or repair failed"
The text is black inside the verifying history box until the last three lines, which say in red:
    "Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
Does this mean I have a virus? Are there other things I can do to confirm that I do or do not have a virus? How do I fix this problem?
    I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Many thanks for your advice/comments in advance.

Probably because the directory on the disk is corrupt.
The error "invalid node structure" is one that will take either DiskWarrior or a reformat to fix.
It has not to with any malware.

  • My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

Please help me, I have a mid 2010 Mac book pro with a toshiba mk3266gsxf harddrive. It started making a clicking noise and then my computer crashed. I proceeded to boot in safe mode, but it doesn't work. When I ran disk utility in recovery mode, it showed no problem with my disk. Does any one know what the problem is?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Tech Tool Deluxe Volume Structure test query

    Hi,
Sorry if this is elsewhere, but my searches have not supplied a definitive answer.
As part of my regular maintenance routine on my iMac (mid 2010 i7 quad core) that I purchased just before Christmas, I have run the AppleCare Tech Tool Deluxe scans at regular monthly intervals with no problems, until about a month ago.
When the program does it's stuff, all tests pass, except the volume structure one (in the window showing the image of the volume structure, it says fail! above the "icon"). The final report that Tech Tool Deluxe comes out with says everything has passed. What's going on?
Because of this, I''ve also done a surface scan in the program and it was OK, as was verifying the disk in Disk Utility from the Snow Leopard DVD. I've repaired permissions and even reformatted the Macintosh HD and done a complete reinstall of the OS (not from backup), all of which come up with the same result in Tech Tool Deluxe - volume structure fails, but final report passes.
The version of Tech Tool Deluxe I have installed from the AppleCare disc is 3.1.3, which according to Micromat is the current one, but this is from 2009.
    So my question is this:
Has the updated Snow Leopard (10.6.6) changed it's volume structure slightly meaning that Tech Tool Deluxe thinks there's a problem as it's scanning, but then ignores it for the final report, or is my HDD failing?
I've not noticed any issues whatsoever with the iMac and I have both Time Machine and bootable SuperDuper backups, so I'm not worried about my data.
Would you guys recommend ignoring it for now, or should I get Diskwarrior to check it out further?
Thanks for any help, or light that can be shed on this issue.

    Hi Den,
Thanks for this, I emailed them and they are giving the usual story of "this product was developed for Apple, so you'll need to speak to them".
I've bit the bullet and purchased DiskWarrior 4.3 and by installing it onto my SuperDuper backup drive, I was able to check out the iMac's internal HD.
DiskWarrior was able to find errors in file structure and permissions etc (it didn't give details) and was able to repair them. After rebooting into the internal HDD, I ran TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3 again, and this time it said that it failed the volume structure during the test and then in the final report. It tried to get me to download the repair version of the software, but the web page that opened had nothing to do with TechTool's download. As a little self test, I ignored it and ran the test again. This time, it failed during the test (as normal) and then said that it passed in the final report.
I have therefore come to the conclusion that if Disk Utility AND DiskWarrior say that it's fine, then the issue must be with TechTool Deluxe. At least it doesn't seem to be an issue with the actual drive.
I admit that I was getting suspicious of TechTool when a fresh install on a reformatted HDD said that the volume structure failed and then passed. There must be something different about the current version of Snow Leopard comared to that at the time of release of version 3.1.3 of Tech Tool Deluxe.
Thanks for all your help guys.
Obviously, if someone can prove me wrong, that would help me ascertain as to what is going on.

  • Tech Tool Deluxe DVD won't boot with 10.5.6. How to fix volume structure?

Is it just my newbieness, or is the Tech Tool Deluxe 3.1.2 DVD image not bootable with late 2008 MBP with OS X 10.5.6?
I installed Tech Tool Deluxe 3.1.2 to Leopard 10.5.6. - ran it and it said I have problems with my volume structures. I followed the download button, gave my serial and downloaded the TTD.dmg image, burned it to DVD with Disk Utility (seems OK, as I can read the disk in OS).
When I try to boot from the DVD, it just reboots in a while to my OS X (tried with c and opt buttons during start-up. I can choose to boot from DVD with opt, but again it just reboots in a while).
Apple mentions that this version of TTD is not compatible with Late 2008 models - is booting one of the incompatibilities? If so, fine, but how can I fix my volume structure problems now, that tend to hang my Mac every once in while with big disk operations?
    Thanks for any possible help.

I had the same problem myself. The TechTool bootable products on DVD won't startup an October 2008 release MacBook or MacBook Pro.
    From the Micromat website:
Our current bootable products support all PowerPC and Intel Macintosh computers capable
of running Mac OS X 10.5 or greater, except for:
    • MacBook (October 2008 Release)
    • MacBook Pro (October 2008 Release)

  • Tech Tool Deluxe identifies "Bad Blocks"

I have two G4's that have been misbehaving. I ultimately erased both hard drives, zeroed out the data, re-installed 10.4, and then ran Tech Tool Deluxe. On my newer G4, the analysis revealed 6 bad blocks. On the older G4, I am only half done and I have 300 bad blocks. One discussion mentioned that "zeroing" the data on the drive would solve the problem - I did that and still have the bad blocks. Should I have ZERO bad blocks - are a few OK?
    Thank you

So, when I erased my disk, "zeroed" out the data (using Disk Utility), should I have zeroed-out the bad blocks as well (identified them, re-addressed them, etc)?
Zeroing the data re-writes every block. As you know, it takes hours to complete. This forces IDE/ATA drives to substitute spares for up to 10 blocks known to have problems, IF
    • enough spare blocks are available AND
    • spares are not also bad AND
    • not more than 10 substitutions are required.
afterward, I did an AHT - no negative result
AHT checks the Directory data structures for damage. It does not read every block, and cannot detect all Bad Blocks on the drive. Doing that takes almost as long as Zero all Data, and AHT is done in only a few minutes.
Disk Utility also did not identify any problems (a few Disk Permissions).
Disk Utility's Repair and Repair Permissions features check the Directory Data Structures and File Permissions for damage and inconsitency. They cannot detect all bad Blocks on the drive. Doing that takes almost as much time as Zero all Data, and AHT is done in only a few minutes.
It was Tech Tool Deluxe that discovered the bad blocks
The "Surface Scan" function reads every block. It is the only test you listed that reads every block, but takes a really long time to do so. It can detect Bad Blocks, but does not fix them. Also, when an IDE/ATA drive has Bad Blocks, its "Smartdrive" status is usually something horrible-sounding like "Failed".
For the drive with 6 bad blocks - what should I do (and in what order) to see if they can be eliminated?
That requires another initialize with "Zero all Data". If there are enough spares in the right neighborhoods, it may be able to substitute spares to make it 100 percent good blocks. There is a possibility that some of the remaining Bad Blocks cannot be repaired, and that may mean the drive is not in good enough shape to continue using it.

  • Tech Tool Deluxe won't install

I got Applecare for my dual G5 1.8 GHz (Running Tiger) and it came with this spiffy CD of Tech Tool Deluxe.
I tried to install it from the CD. It got all the way through the installation, then it was "searching the HD." I let it search. It searched all night. And all day. After about 18 hours of searching, I quit the installer.
I then ran disk utility to clean up permissions. I tried reinstalling Tech Tool Deluxe. Same issue.
I booted from the Tech Tool CD. Ran Tech Tool. No issues found.
I then rebooted into Tiger and tried, again, to install Tech Tool Deluxe. Same problem.
The version on the CD is 3.0.4, which is the most up to date version on Micromat's website.
Any thoughts on what's going on?
    Thanks,

    DP G5 @ 1.8 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The problem is probably that Tech Tool is now at 4.1.1. - check their site again. This (4.1.1) is the first version to be Tiger compatable - 3.0.4 is NOT Tiger friendly and probably isn't even OS X compatible - when Mac went to OS X Micromat offered 4.0.1 to us registered users as a free upgrade to get OS X compatability - the disk I bought 3 years ago for OS 9 was actually 3.0.9 so I'd say upgrade to 4.1.1 and back up your drive as they recommend until you know it isn't going to be glitchy with Tiger in this version. I would advise caution however with Tiger usage. I have 4.1.1 from an upgrade download to the disk version of 4.0.1 and the CD will not allow me to boot from it for repairs. I will need the disk of 4.1.1 to do this. I also know of two people who have lost their data and drive functionality after doing routine repairs. This may be a Quad issue - both instances were on Quads - and may not affect Duals but I'm waiting for the next upgrade before using this fix any drive issues on my Quad. I will stick with Disk Utilities on the Tiger boot disk untill then.
P.S. I was able to load 4.0.1 no sweat from the disc which does allow inspection and you can still repair all externals , just not the system drive from the desktop...

  • Tech Tool Deluxe?

I have completely restarted my MBP, Hoping that this might straighten out any of the problems. But it didn't, When ever I run a full scan with "Tech Tool Deluxe" it has a result of six errors with the "surface scan". In the report it says-
    Surface Scan
    Failed - 6 errors
The Surface Scan test will scan the disk for bad blocks.
Media defects cause this test to fail. You should consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
What do I do?? How do I go about reformatting?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
To backup your data, follow the instructions on my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Once you have a backup, locate your MacBook Pro restore and installation discs, and double click the installer. Upon reaching the installer screen and selecting the language, go to the Utilities menu and select disk utility.
This will allow you to erase the hard drive.
You can also proceed with a simple Erase and Install in the installer program. That will erase as well.
If afterwards Techtool Deluxe does not detect improvement on your hard drive, and you are using a Techtool Deluxe version known to work with your MacBook Pro, then I'd call Apple and request they replace the hard drive on your machine, as it would sound the drive itself is damaged.

  • Failed volume structure on tech tool deluxe

i tested my mac book pro with tech tool delux and the volume structure failed. what should i do? i don't have a way to back up my files right now.... my volume sometimes takes a few seconds to work when i play music. is this a related problem?

hi tcbc59 - Welcome to Apple Discussions!
your hard drive is in bad shape..... playing music uses your hard drive so, yes, that can certainly be related....
you need to try to back-up whatever you can. can you not go buy a blank DVD and burn a disk using your superdrive?
(i don't use tech tool deluxe) have to tried to repair the drive using that app?
if not, Diskwarrior can probably fix the problem(s).
if TT and DW cannot fix it, then you're looking at reinitializing your hard drive and reinstalling everything. sometimes this is all one can do....
but again, back-up whatever you can before doing anything else.... post back if none of this helped. good luck! cheers

  • Tech Tool Deluxe v3.1.2

I apologize if this question is in the incorrect category; I was unable to find one for issues concerning Tech Tool Deluxe which is available at N/C to owners of systems still in warranty.
I downloaded v3.1.2. and this executes from within the O/S. Is there not a version that one can run at boot and thereby not have to contend with drivers, allocated memory, etc? I seem to recall that the version prior to this did....
    Thanks,
    Lyman

Well, if you have a bootable CD with the latest version of TechTool, you can then startup from the CD and go directly into TechTool. The problem is the frequent need for updates, which makes the CD obsolete quickly. Micromat will probably sell you another updated CD, but it too will become obsolete quickly. Or you can create a boot disk (as a partition or separate drive) with the tools you need for maintenance and trouble-shooting. I like it better than using the CD because it runs faster, I have access to Apple's Disk Utility and other tools in addition to TechTool, and it's easy to keep updated (both for the OS and the tools).

I have an iMac mid 2010. After Disk utilities said the drive was corrupt, I ran the hardware test (extended) 3 times. No problems. I than ran Disk utility again and got 2 messages in red…keys out of order, and ……Volume corrupt, can't be repaired.
I tried to do a system install, but message said…disk can't be changed. Will a complete erase and install fix this ?
    Everything is backed-up.

    There's hardware and software.
Your drive could physically be in good condition but something has caused the file structure to be messed up (it just happens sometimes).  The directory that keep track of files is corrupt.  Disk Utility can help determine if that is the issue.  In some cases it can repair the problem but it cannot do it to a drive that is being used to boot the system while you are doing that.  You have to boot from another drive.  Some things DU cannot repair and you need to try a stronger utility such as Diskwarrior.
A failing hard drive (one with mechanical issues) can be a cause of file structure issues but this is by no means always the case.  Apart from looking at the SMART diagnosis feature of Disk Utility (and smart isn't totally reliable) there often isn't a way to tell if a drive is failing until it suddenly happens, which is why you need to maintain backups.
In your situation it does sound serious and not just minor directory corruption.  You can try erasing (formatting) the drive,  You may need to do this if it is really corrupt, in which case there could be underlying physical issues.  I use old technology but if you have the patience you can try erasing the drive with the security option of writing zeros once (don't do more unless you are going on a 3 week vacation).  This makes the drive not simply assume everything is okay by forcing it try every part of the drive by writing data.  If something is gong wrong you may find it marks a lot of bad sectors, or flat out refuses to format.  Then you know you need a new drive.

  • MBP Freezes (have erased and installed, ran disk utility, and inc fan speed

Hi Guys, Any advice on this issue would be very much appreciated please.
Have had an original mbp for about 2 and a half years. Last few weeks it's been freezing between 1 and 5 times a day. By freezing I mean that the screen freezes and there's no cursor or keyboard fuctionality. Sound stops too. This happens using World of Warcraft, Pages, Office for Mac, and Safari, sometimes also the finder. Main culprit though is Safari and WoW. For comedy value, I'm a priest in WoW and it froze during a raid which resulted in the whole group wiping out! Great timing! lol
    So far I have:
Ran disk utility, repaired permissions and verified disk.
Did a complete erase and install.
Downloaded Fan Control and set to 3400 base speed, left fan @ 3503 RPM and Right fan @ 3508 RPM - temp reads 46.9 oC (118 oF)
I'm guessing that since my erase and install, that it is very much a hardware issue as the problem has happened again.
Since I've done the fan thing, nothing has frozen so far but I only did it about an hour ago.
If anyone could offer any other suggestions in case it does freeze again I'd be very grateful indeed :0)
Oh - one thing I don't get is that only about 4 hours after my erase and install I did the disk utility once more (Repair permissions and verify) and it came up with the below list - which is huge given it was a fresh install. Not sure if the below info will help (not really sure what it's for tbh - but there it is.
    Many thanks,
    Vizzy

According to Mactracker, your Mac could recognize 3 GB of RAM:
    http://www.mactracker.ca/
One thing to check is your RAM usage while playing WOW. I am not a gamer, so I don't know if you can play with your Dock visible, but if you can, here is an easy way to keep track of your RAM usage.
Go to Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder) and put it in the Dock. Then while in Activity Monitor, go to View (in the menu bar)>Dock Icon and select "Show Memory Usage".
You want to see a lot of green in the pie chart. If you don't, you are running out of RAM and then the computer turns to your hard drive to fulfill the functions of RAM. This process is much slower, and I could see it resulting in freezes. If you find that the green virtually disappears while gaming, you could well benefit from upping the RAM by another 1 GB to 3 GB total.
    Good luck!

  • G4 & Tech Tool Deluxe

Power Mac G4, Dual 1GHz and OS V10.4.11- When I start up the "Power On Self-Test" shows FailureType: External cache, but when I run Tech Tool Deluxe V3.1.1 it shows that every thing passes is there some conflict there or do they not test the same things? Thank you.

I would like to think everyone for their help, but it looks like I got lucky. It looked like I was going to have to buy a new processor so I figured I had nothing to loose. I removed the heatsink and then the card, I was looking for burnt wires or anything that looked odd, as far as I could tell everything was fine, I wouldn't have known if it wasn't:) I cleaned the board and made sure everything was seated, put it back together, started it up (watched for smoke) went to the System Profiler and the Diagnostics now shows the L3 Cache, maybe something was loose or just cleaning it did the trick. Thanks again.

  • Booting from Tech Tool Deluxe 10.4.2

I can boot our older ibook G3 from this Cd ( which I just received with my brand new ibook)- however when I start up the G4 from the CD the screen is shades of gray- barely can barely see that it is loading correctly- however the pointer is frozen in left hand corner- can't move it, although the return key works to select the program. arrow down key also works to read report- but still pointer can't move to restart and I am forced to force quit.
    very strange
Cleaned and tried several times same results- I am wondering if perhaps this Apple Care Cd is not for 10.4.2.

I have heard that other utilities are more helpful- but as I just recieved this computer last week- from Apple and Tech Tool Deluxe was the software that shipped with my Apple Care plan- I thought it might be usable on the computer it was purchased with- silly me.
I also made a new updated disk of 3.0.3 Disk Warrior and I could not even start up from that disk- it froze and I had to force quit-
From what I have read elsewhere- Disk Warrior is compatible with 10.4.2, so there must be something else going on.
