Ran software update, now Tiger login crashes to dawrin login

I just ran the software update today, and now my mac crashes down to darwin if I type into the login box. What happened?

Hosed installation? Boot with the backup/clone you made before updating, erase the faulty volume, restore the clone, and give it another go. As for the darwin problem, search these forums. Many hits that might help.

I ran software update, now Java in Safari and Firefox doesn't work. How do I fix it?

    I already tried that.
    I am running OS 10.6.8.
I did a "normal" software update (under the Apple icon).. didn't update the OS to a higher level, it's still 10.6.8. But now certain websites tell me that Java is missing or not working. When I go to the Java site, they say that you can only download the newest Java for OS 7 or higher... that Java is automatically part of OS 6 and should have automatically updated when I do a Mac software update.
Java used to work. Now that I've "updated" my Mac software, it doesn't work. And there's no way to download and install Java (according to them).
It's a never ending circle with no solution.

OK, well I solved my own problem by replacing this file with one from a recent TimeMachine backup. Looks like the update must have damaged this file ... strange.

  • I have 15" 2010 MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. I need to activate Bootcamp and install Windows 7. I ran software update. Does this update update Bootcamp? Or do I need to comb thru the 4 pages of updates and somehow determine which ones I need?

My goal is to activate Boot Camp and the install Windows 7 in 64 bit mode on my 15" MacBook Pro (mid 2010 model)
    I have several questions:
    1. I ran software update and am up to date. Does this mean that my yet to be activated Boot Camp ap is also up to date?
There are 4 confusing pages of updates listed at Apples website for Boot Camp. I am having a hard time understanding what I need and don't need. For example, what version of Boot Camp do I have? I have Boot Camp Assistant version 3.0.4. Does this mean I have Boot Camp ver 3?
    2. The printed Boot Camp instructions do not explain the process of using downloaded Windows drivers; the instuctions only refer to drivers on the original disks. I have the original install disks from around mid 2010 but I am sure many things have been updated by now. Wouldn't the best idea be to download and install? But the instructions only cover using the original disks. How do I use downloaded drivers?

You have Mac OS X Snow Leopard, so you are going to use Boot Camp 3 on Windows. After installing Windows 7 on your MacBook, insert the Snow Leopard DVD and install the Boot Camp drivers from here. Then, as the Boot Camp drivers that your Snow Leopard disc contain are outdated, open Apple Software Update on Windows to install the most recent Boot Camp drivers.

On Snow Leopard, you can only download the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2010 MacBook Air. On Lion and Mountain Lion, you have to download the Boot Camp drivers for all the computers. If you try to download the Boot Camp drivers on Snow Leopard with your computer, you will get a message telling that there aren't any drivers to download for your MacBook Pro

  • Mail, Safari, Software Update and Yahoo Messenger crash on startup in 10.4.

I'm running a G4 Dual 1 Ghz with 1.5 Ram on 10.4.9 and Mail, Safari, iPhoto, Software Update and Yahoo Messenger crash on startup. Pro Tools (which is why I remain on 10.4.9) Firefox (which is how I can communicate now) and iTunes work fine.
iPhoto crashed and never started again back when I was on Panther. However, all the others started crashing on startup shortly after I upgraded from 10.4 to 10.4.9.
I have run Disk Utility to verify disk and repair permissions. With the exception of iPhoto, it seems that the others crash when it starts to stream from the Internet.
    Any ideas?

Here's what console showed. Not much:
    <<Mar 22 16:47:26 Mike-Jaspers-Computer crashdump[277]: Yahoo! Messenger crashed

My assumption on things such as Mail and Safari is that once I upgraded the system those applications would upgrade as well. As to Yahoo Messenger, I downloaded the proper version and reinstalled, but it crashes as well.
Seems to be something when it's about to connect to the Internet--with the exception of Firefox, which is why I can post now.
    Mike
PS -- I'd consider the 10411 combo update, but Digidesign only supports Pro Tools 7.4 up to 10.4.9. That said, many people use it with 10.4.11 and I'll definitely try the 10.4.11 upgrade before I try an entire system reinstall.

  • HT5766 Where can I find the size of a download for a software update now?

    Hello,
Where can I find the size of a download for a software update now?
Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion (Mac OSX 10.8.3) this information is no longer available in software updates listing you get if you click on the Software Update menu item from the Apple menu.
I found the download size (often hundreds of megabytes for an individual update and sometimes a set of updates might amount to a few gigabytes) to be very helpful, and now that it seems no longer available (I can't even see it on the web page I came to for more information, thinking the download size would surely be specified there), it is frustrating. My current example is iTunes 11.0.3
I would greatly appreicate having this information back in the software updates listing, but since it is no longer available there, and I don't know where else to find it, if anybody can enlighten me to its whereabouts, I'd be grateful.
    Thanks and cheers!

  • Software Update - now NO DVD Player

Last night I ran Software Update -- 4 updates including security, iTunes, Quicktime and something else. I then installed the software (4.1) for a new Airport Extreme (g) card. Immediately afterwards the dvd player/OS stopped recognizing dvds or cds of any kind -- doesn't mount the drive nor play the disks. This is a G4 dual 500 with 896 RAM that has never had this problem or any other problem. This is my wife's Mac -- I'm the knowledgeable PC user in the family. For this I have no idea what to do -- including reinstalling the OS which requires the drive. Please help!

I was given the computer only, software installed, but with no software disks. (Is this standard practice, BTW?)
No, that's not standard. You should at least have some grey disks labeled "Software Restore" or similar.
You need the disks to install the extra content - only very rarely have people reported a successful download via Software Update. It fails at least 90 percent of the time.

  • Ran Software Updates and Now Drop Frames during Playback

I updated all of my Software back in late December. Since I have updated, all projects (old and new created ones) within Final Cut drop frames during playback. I had no issues with drop frames until I ran the Software Updates. Currently running Leopard 10.5.6, Final Cut 6.0.5, Quicktime 7.5.5. Any suggestions on how to determine why I now have drop frames. Is there an easy way to revert back to software that was in place prior to me running Software Updates on 12/22/08?
Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

First, you should have an up-to-date tested reliable backup. The best way to do it is to get an external Firewire HDD, clone you entire computer to is using SuperDuper, then keep it up-do-date.
Next, get in the habit of doing regular maintenance procedures. Here are some links to help.

    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

  • Ran software update and now all my bookmarks are gone.

I ran a software update and when I opened Safari I noticed all my bookmarks are gone. I located the Bookmarks.plist and it shows nothing of my old (2 1/2 years worth of) bookmarks in it. Is there any way I can get them back or am I toast?
    Any help would be great.

    You may be toast.
Do you have any backups of your system, or at least your user library file?
Have you used Spotlight to search your system? The installer via Software Update updates the app, however leaves the Safari folder in the User Library alone. If for some reason you moved this folder, a new one would be created when you started up Safari after the update.

  • Re-install Tiger, Software Update, now Airport doesn't work

So, I just replaced the hard drive on my Dual USB iBook G3. I completed the installation, and everything was working great. Airport was showing my home network (unsecured, iknow) and I was able to connect to Software Update via the Airport.
First major download was the 10.4.8 combined update for PPC - after downloading it and restarting I lost Airport connectivity. Can't find my newtork, can't manually input IP address, etc.
Next, plugged into Ethernet and downloaded Airport (4.2 ?) and still nothing.
What's the deal? Airport was working before the updates, and now nothing. Other laptops at home are working wirelessly just fine, so it's not my ISP, connection, or router.
    Help!

Hi sockdaddy, welcome to Apple Discussions!
Click here to be taken to the Airport Troubleshooting kBase document.
It could be that you need a firmware update following the 10.4.8 update. Follow the steps in the above link, and post back with your results.
Another thing to try is the Mac OS Software update. Click on the Apple logo at the top left of screen while connected to the 'net, choose 'Software Update' and let the computer do the rest.
If all else fails, remove and re-seat the Airport card by following these instructions.
Let us know how you go.

  • Just did software update, now mail won't open!!

I just ran a software update and now may mail application won't open. These are the five updates that I installed:
    Backup 3.1.1
    iPhoto 6.0.6
    Airport Base Station 5.1
    iTunes 7.2
Mac OSX Update Combined (PowerPC) 10.4.10
I don't think I needed to install that last one, about the Power PC....Anyone know if that is enough to keep my Mail App. from openenig? I can still check my e-mail via .Mac, just not through my Mail Appliacation.

Did you download the correct Combo for PPC, since it
appears you do not have an Intel Mac?
If the correct Combo version, then I think you should
run Disk Repair from the original Tiger install disk
to check out your hard drive.
How much free disk space do you have on your hard
drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition?
    Ernie
    Ernie,
thanks for the suggestions. I'm not quite the Mac expert I'd like to be, so bear with me please. How do I know if I downloaded "the correct Combo for PPC, since it appears you do not have an Intel Mac?" Wouldn't my computer automatically download the correct one? How can I check if it's the right one? ALSO,
How do I "run Disk Repair from the original Tiger install disk to check out your hard drive"? Do I need to insert the original startup disk again, or can I do it without it?
When doing info on my mac, it says I only have 6.1 GB left available. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

  • Ran software updates and my life changed forever...

    Hi -
At the suggestion of someone at the Genius Bar, I recently ran and installed the software updates I've been ignoring, including OS 10.4.9
I've been working on a movie for months which was playing very smoothly until I installed these updates, now it's skipping and jumping, making it impossible to work on. I've changed the playback to Standard. I've tried choosing a few frames at a time and "sharing" them in iDVD to view them but even in iDVD they're jumpy and skipping. I close all other programs. I ran "repair disk permissions". I ran out of ideas. Nothing seems to work.
Last night I installed a 1G memory card hoping this would solve the problem - nothing.
Someone suggested that my computer may not be able to support 10.4.9 because I don't have enough memory (the guy at the Genius Bar told me 1G is the max I can add).
Any suggestions? Can I uninstall the updates and get back to where I was? Help!
    Thanks - Z

  • Problem with software update - now can't log on to administrator account

    Hello -
I updated software yesterday and didn't pay attention to what was updating. I always just install the updates when they come up.
Now I can't login to my administrator account or change the password. I could log into another account, but iTunes won't stay open. It opens for about 10 seconds then closes.
So I'm assuming that the updates were a mac OSX update and an iTunes update.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix?
Is there anyway to "undo" the most recent update?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    -jamendan

Hi jamendan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
