Random Address Book Question

Apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum.  I am not quite sure where this question belongs.
My mother still uses the ancient Rolodex (see picture below) for her contact information.  I would like to transfer this information to her computer as an early birthday present.  I am hoping that some software or technique exists that can help me avoid the hours and misery of having to enter the names, addresses and numbers from each card ... there are thousands.
Ideally (and I mean that in the strongest sense of the word), I am looking for a program or service or other mechanism that would
take the information from a scan of a card (or cards)*
convert that information to text
and then either
          (a) provide me the data to copy and paste onto a new cards in the Address Book application or in Outlook, or my Google Address Book.
          OR
          (b) Magically create the cards for me. (Obviously this would be the preferred method in my idyllic computer world.)
* The only reason I mention scanning the cards is because it is the only way I know of to get the information from the paper card onto a computer.  If there is another method please feel free to tell me.
While it does not show, I have attempted to ask this question in the least confusing way possible.  Any leads would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.
A Rolodex ------------->

You would need a scanner with OCR (optical character regocnition) software. It scans the text and makes an educated guess as to what the letter is and types that into a doc for you. It works best when you are scanning typed text. If it is handwriting it will be pretty spotty getting the letters right. Either way this will be very labor intensive because you will still need to correct any mistakes you find, and it will only save the step of actually reading the cards yourself and typing them.
The other thing I can think of is when you said service. You could just hire a temp agency to have someone do it for you, paid by the hour. Or maybe a school job wanted board.
But no magic to create the cards I know of!

  • Address Book Question -- IS THIS POSSIBLE ??

Is "appending" information possible to address book ? Or like a way to add info from one address book to another with out it deleting anything on the one getting updated OR with out making duplicates of the contact info(s) ????
Kinda like what we call a "incremintal back up". Like it is able to detect what is NEW info and ONLY save that to it while keeping all the old stuff on it.
    Let me explain --
I got a tower and a laptop. Address Book (obviously) on both.
Sometimes the one on my laptop gets some contact info added to it, while the one on my tower does not get that info added to it. OR vise versa.
I want to combine the two and not lose anything and NOT have to do it manually. Because alot of info has gone down on both recently.
But at the same time they both have alot of the SAME contacts on them because for a while I was trying to keep up with them and I was manually saving info, then putting it into the other. But recently things have gotten too far and I can not remember which has what, when..
I NEED to do a incremental save/back up to one of them FROM the other one (combine the both with out causeing duplicates, or with out loseing anything).....
    Please help.
    Thanks -

Cool, I guess thats good enough... It will get the job done the way I want, so THANKS ALOT Mike !!
    Problem solved.
I wish in the future though Apple makes it possible to do it how I was saying. Hook your laptop up via firewire to your tower, then Basically a one button click to "append only new info" from the laptops address book. No questions about what to do with duplicates, etc.... just update ALL NEW info. Don't touch old.
Thanks again though my friend, your reply was extremely valuable to me.

  • Address Book Question (possible move from Exchange Server to Mac Server)

I currently run an Exchange Server. What I like the most about it is that no matter what I use to access my e-mail account, I have my calendar and contacts. Plus everything that I do from any method of access shows up in a different method of access.
So the question is, if I go to the Mac Server and run mail services with webmail, can I access my calendar, contacts, inbox, sent items, subfolders, etc. from my Mac laptop, and then also from a foreign machine that I use to access the webmail? If I went into webmail, would I have all my contacts available? My calendar? Could I check my sent items or subfolders?
Pointers to relevant documentation would be a plus.
    Thanks very much in advance.
    Jeff

you can piece most/all of it together... but it's certainly not as integrated the way exchange is...
If your main concern is sharing mail folders among several machines and with webmail, this is easy to handle with imap... you could share sent, inbox, etc.
Shared Address Books can be setup with LDAP.. it takes some work though and is a far cry from Exchange...
If you are a tinkerer and your staff can put-up with the tinkering, you could piece many of the features together... but if you are happy with, and use, the exchange features- I'd stick with it.

  • Address Book questions

Hi...I have only started using Address Book on the mac, to easily sync with the iphone. I had 2 questions, which will sound very silly. (1) I am planning to change my computer upon Apple's forthcoming Macbook pro upgrade. How can i sync both Address Books together (the old and new)?, and (2) How can i delete a contact and/or group from my address book? Looked all over for a delete contact/group option to no avail. Any help will be appreciated. thanks.

When you sync your phone with the new address book the contacts already existent on your phone will be added to that address book also
To delete a contact, open Address Book select the contact you want to delete go to Edit and click on Delete Card

  • 2 Address Book questions.....

    1. Is there any way to print a range of names? I have 3200 contacts in Address Book. I print out 200 address labels each week. Is there any way to choose to print from, say "Jones to Jessup" or do I have to print out labels for the complete database each time?
    2. When I imported my contacts from Outlook on the PC they all got 'kinda mixed together within the "All" category of Address Book. I would like to seperate them into categories like "Personal" and "Business" or whatever. I'm *assuming I can drag and drop them from the "All" category into whatever sub-category I choose? At least 3000 of these will go into the "Work" sub-category I have created. Would it be asking too much of my iMac (new model) if I did a "Select All" and dragged them into the sub-category or do you think my system will choke?
Thanks in advance. I'm 'kinda new to Macs. Actually, I really new to Macs. LOL

    sjesser,
    1st Q:
    Create a new group,
Select the address you want to print and drag them into the group
Now select group in the left column, press Apple P to start print, this will only print the ones in the group.
    2nd Q
this will be no problem at all, but to be on the safe side, use the Backup feature in AddressBook first and store this in another folder (you should do this routine regularly anyway).
I will test some things to see how you can do this in a way that you do not need to dig through the whole pile twice. Do remember that all addresses will stay in the "top" group all, you are always making copies that go into the groups, so the originals remain in place.

  • Lion Address Book question (version 6.1.2)

In Lion's address book (version 6.1.2), after importing a v-card, the application doesn't automatically navigate to the newly imported v-card (like it did in Leopard).  How can I get it to navigate automatically to the newly imported v-card, right after importing??

Then restore from you Mac laptop's backup, if you have not been backing up then you may be in for a very painful lesson on why backing up is the VERY FIRST thing you should do with any new Mac. Create a backup plan and use it on a regular basis. If the laptop was using 10.5.x or later then you have absolutely no excuse for not backing up. Sorry for being terse and blunt but Time Machine has been built into 10.5.x, 10.6.x and 10.7.x so we have had years to have a seamless and mindless method of backing up. If you have been using an earlier verision of OS X there are quite a number of methods of backing up.
If you aren't successful then take the laptop and iMac to your local Apple Store or AASP and they may be able to help you recover your contacts.

  • TM - Address Book Question

I'm trying to look up a phone number that is no longer in my Contacts on my phone. I had MobileMe sync'ing my Contacts so am trying to go back to a point in time that I 'know' I had the number. Problem is when I restore, I get a dialog asking if I want to keep one or the other or both Address Books, I select both but then both Address Books appear identical and the number I'm looking for is still not there. It's like my current AB over-writes the old one.
    Any hints or ideas please?

    Figured it out.
Needed to swap out the ~Users/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and then find the right point in time.
    Alls well, thank you.

  • Large Contact Address Book Question

    Hello...
Does Google or the Pre have a max size on contacts? I ask as I have a very large address book at over 8,000 contacts that I had on my Treo 700P. I used the Data Transfer Assistant and only seemed to get as far as the letter "U".
I am taking a guess that the Pre has a max of 8,000 contacts. Can anyone verify that they have chosen the Google option for sync and they have more than 8,000 contacts?
    Thank you,
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

Hi.  Following up on this answer, & to confirm:  This is the only way to get rid of duplicate info that is stored in the Palm Profile, correct?  When I first ran DTA, from my Palm desktop, I hadn't realized just how many duplicates there were.  I'm now cleaning up those contacts, in the old Palm Desktop (actually, in ECCO, an old PIM that works w/ Palm Hotsync, & now MotionApps Classic).  However, I understand that if I run DTA again, I'll simply be adding another set of contacts, albeit w/ no dupes, into what's already stored in the Profile, w/ all of its many dupes.  So, the only answer is to wipe the Pre, after deleting the Backup?
Also, a tip gleaned elsewhere:  for Windows XP users, MS Synctoy, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52&Displa...   allows one to create & maintain an exact copy of two directories & associated subdirectories, across drives.  So I have created an exact duplicate (Have I?  Is anything missing) of the palm Pre on the root directory of my C-Drive (had to put on the root directroy, b/c some of the Palm Pre subdirectory names are so long),  which I run manually, but which should allow me to restore all missing data files (i.e. photos, docs, & videos, not settings & such, which are buried in files which I can't figure out) after the wipe.
Please advise me if there's a problme w/ the above.  Thank you!

  • A silly address book question.

So I was arranging my little applications menu when somehow I managed to hide/delete my address book (I'm not sure which.) When I dial a number or type a name all of my numbers are there, but I can't get to my actual address book at all. Can anybody help me out?

On the homescreen, press Menu (the key left of the trackball) and SHOW ALL, needs to be checked.
Look again for the address book.
You may also have simply moved the address book to another folder.

  • Add sender/address book question

I got the part where you command shift y to save a sender to the address book. What I would like to do is have the new contact "pop up" so that I can add phone numbers, notes etc without having to click address book, seach for the contact etc etc.

after you've added an email address to the address book from Mail, you can control-click on the email address and there will be an option "open in address book".

  • Random address book contacts not syncing to 750i

Some address/contacts dont appear to sync or show on 7501.If I delete the contact and re enter seems to be ok,but modifying entry does not update.
    Appreciate any advise.

Assuming you are talking about the Sony Ericsson K750i, you are not alone. I have had the same problem on numerous occasions. I have no idea why this is happening.
Would be interested if anyone can shed any light on this.

  • How do I create a duplicate card in Address Book?

I have searched and found plenty of posts on how to FIND, MERGE or DELETE duplicate cards in Address Book...
    - But I want to CREATE a duplicate card. In other words, if I want to create separate cards for 2 married people with the same last name, address and home phone number, is there a fast way to create a second card without having to manually fill in all contact info?
Also, WHERE does one post Address Book questions? This was just a guess.
    Thanks.
    Robert

I think I understand your question and if so, this is a decently speedy workaround.
    1) Create your first card with say the husbands name
    2) Go to File > Export > Export vCard
    3) Change the name of the card that is in Address Book to the other person ie. the wifes name
    4) Go to File > Import > Import vCard (shortcut is Command+O)
    5) Now you will have the original vCard you created which is the husbands name and you will have the wife's name as well because you just changed it.
You can import and export multiple vCards at once so you can create all of them, export them, change all the names, and then re import.
    Hope this helps!

  • Auto populate iChat buddy picture to Address Book?

I don't know if this is really an Address Book question, or an iChat AV question, but here goes:
I am trying to have the buddy picture that my friends use with their iChat or AIM screen name transfer over to Address Book. Right now, I see their buddy picture in iChat, but when I look at their Address Book card, it just has the blank picture.
I know I can set their picture manually in Address Book, but I don't want to do that. I just want whatever they have showing in iChat to be automatically transferred to their Address Book entry.
Does anyone know how to do that? Is it even possible? I saw no reference to this particular question anywhere in the forums.
    Thanks

  • Address book in piserverdb tree

    Hello
if my knowledge is correct, the address book is stored in the o=piservdb tree in the Directory server.
but how is that data stored? because when I export an ldif of o=piservdb tree and i look for a certain user which i know has nearly 2000 contacts in his AB i can only find a few entries (about 7)
so what is the best way to backup the address book of that user only? the database has also to be backupped or only exporting the o=piservdb is enough?
and having a ldif export of a o=piservdb if i restore that with dsconf import ldif o=piservdb, it will be overwrite everything, for all users? how can it be restored for only one user?
another question, we have an user that has every entry duplicated in his address book, he has about 1500 entries b ut in the uwc/convergence, there are 3000 records and each record appears twice.
I will be extremely grateful if you can give me direction how to solve my current address book questions and issues.
    kindest regards

I doubt it but who knows. Maybe you can look for an alternative to buy from the App Store.
