Random alerts in iCal

Hi,
At my work we have an iCloud account set up where we all share the company calendar. The calendar is created and managed through iCloud. A few months ago we started to get a lot of unwanted/random alerts. The are always set for 0 minutes before the event, but I personally seen them pop up after the event as well. A majority of the alerts happen with repeating events. I've tried to manually set them back to none but the alerts come back. I've checked the companies computers and no one has Add Default Alerts set in there preferences. I've even seen alerts get set for events that I personally created and know for a fact weren't set. I know you can just turn off alerts on the iMac, but people that have the cal on their phone still receive that alerts.
So, how can I prevent the alerts from being created, and second is there a way to turn off iCal alerts within the iPhone? Thanks

I just discovered that when I view the events on www.icloud.com the ones that are improperly alerting for me show up there with the alert option turned on, even though they don't show as alerting on the macs or ios devices. So far, it seems that turning off the alert on www.icloud.com fixes the event on the icloud server (so it won't get sent to all the devices).  It doesn't fix the cause. That's something Apple has to figure out.
But I think it's related somehow to the mac Calendar Preferences Alerts options. In the latest Lion, either someone has Events>At Time Of Event as their preference, or the default of None is not working. On each mac, try toggling that preference to some value you don't want, like 5 minutes before, then close and reopen preference and turn it back to None.

  • How to delete all ALERTS in iCal at once?

Over the years I have added repeating Events with Alerts to iCal on various devices (some of them passed on to my relatives). As a  result I get plenty of Alert emails or sounds. I find it onerous to go through all repeating events to delete the alert. Hence my question: how to delete all Alerts at once?
Thanks for any suggestions/pointers/ideas. Cheers, Veit

    Hi John,
Thanks so much for your help with this problem. I am trying to remove alerts for a couple of specific shared calendars (which I can edit) but am having some difficulty due to my inexperience with applescript! I am also not sure where else to go for help solving this problem.
My plan is to run your script a couple of times specifying one calendar at a time by name.
This is the modification I made to your script:
    tell application "Calendar"
      activate
              delay 0.5
display alert "Removing all alarms from your editable calendars" message "This process may take some time and is permanent. Are you sure you want to do this?" buttons {"Yes", "No"} cancel button 2
              set calname to "Consultant_on_call"
--- repeat with myCalendar in (calendars whose writable is true)
repeat with myCalendar in (calendars whose name is calname)
repeat with myEvent in events of myCalendar
      delete display alarms of myEvent
      delete mail alarms of myEvent
      delete sound alarms of myEvent
delete open file alarms of myEvent
                        end repeat
              end repeat
display alert "Removing all alarms from your editable calendars" message "This process is complete." buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    end tell
Are you able to tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks again.
    Andrew

  • Is there a way to create an email alert in iCal on the iPhone (as it's possible to do on the laptop)?

Is there a way to create an email alert in iCal on the iPhone (as it's possible to do on the laptop)?

    Nope.
You might be able to find another calendar app that can do that in the App Store.
And, you can always leave Apple feedback here -> Apple - iPhone - Feedback

  • Random Alerts

    Hi there,
I love the 8800. Great phone. Yes, the battery life is the only negative about this phone.
However i have another issue. This random alert comes up and says "Check info service!". I have gone to too many O2 shops and a nokia shop and everyone is clueless.
Can anyone help me? This alert is **bleep** annoying.
    HEEEEELLLLPPP!!!!

Go into the messages menu, scroll down to info messages, select and turn them off!

  • Problems Setting Alerts on iCal with Yosemite

I am having problems setting alerts on iCal. Generally, I set for reminders at 1 day ahead, and then 2 hours ahead. When I enter the first alert everything is fine, and then on the second, the alerts switch places so that the one day before alert occurs as the second alert, and the 2 hours before as the first alert. Is there something I am missing?  It is purely frustrating. Using Mac Book Pro, running Yosemite 10.10.1. Thanks!

First, verify you're using Calendar and not iCal, which was deprecated a long time ago.
Then, update OS X. 10.10.2 is the current release.
Using Calendar, I can't duplicate the problem, but perhaps I am misunderstanding your description of it. If you would kindly provide really simple step-by-step instructions, I'll try again and let you know what I observe. It could very well be a bug.

  • Calendar creating random alerts for events

The last couple of weeks, iCloud Calendar and the Mac Calendar having been doing something very odd.  I have my college courses laid out in my Calendar and syncing between my iPhone, Mac, and iPad.  My default setting for this college calendar (and across my devices) was to alert me 15 minutes before each class started.
The last couple of weeks, however, the Calendar would alert me at my default time, but then it would alert me at the time the class was scheduled to start, and then at two random times after the class already started.  The other two created alerts usually happened around 5-15 minutes after the event already started.  After the second later time, the alerts would stop being created and stop appearing in my notifications.  I was even able to watch these alerts being created, and if I deleted the new alert, I would have to delete it a second time before it actually disappeared.  And this reminder went out across my 3 devices.
    Here's what I have tried.
Changed my password on iCloud/Apple ID
I have removed the PList from Calendar app on my Mac, which changed nothing.
Repaired Permissions with Disk Utility and Onyx, also did nothing (though Disk Utility at one point did detect an error in Calendar which it said it fixed).
I went to iCloud.com and deleted the entire College calendar from the Calendar app and then manually re-added my classes.  I noticed that on some the classes, it tried to create the random alerts immediately, but since I deleted those classes again and readded them and they stopped.  This temporarily worked.
This last stepped worked for about a week before my college classes started doing this again.  Since I applied the iCloud "fix", only some of my college classes have begun creating random alerts again, but only on my Mac and not on my iOS devices.  Also, my birthdays imported from Facebook are now exhibiting this trait.  No other calendars, such as my work or appointment calendars, are doing this though, and I have tested them by creating new events in said calendars. I don't want to stop using Calendar for something like this.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Update:  Now some of my other calendars are doing this too, like my work calendar, up to almost an hour after the actual event.  I have no idea what's going on.

  • How to change default alerts in iCal?

    Hello.
Every time you add a new event in iCal, the Info panel of the event contains a series of default alerts that you may want to add to it. However, all of them are useless to me (e.g.: "Send email to <my address> 4 days after), so I need to manually edit them event by event. Anybody knows how to change them? I have already inspected all the plist files related to ical, and looked inside the ical package content, but I found no indication of where to change these values. Using iCal version 5.0.2
    Thanks,
    l

John: Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted. I was indeed inspecting the plist with bbedit, but what I did not realize is that the file has some parts which are binary, so I could not see the PersistentMenu-lastUsedAlarms part by using a text editor. I opened it with Xcode and I did find what you were saying, and erased all the junk that was in there. In fact, the issue I had was also described here:
    http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.comp.sys.mac/2010-06/msg02349.html
For some reason, it looks like after some upgrade the program adds were some positive values in the plist and I was stuck with default alarms that were set *after* the events I wanted to set an alarm for.
I did what you suggested, then added by hand new values to the PersistentMenu part of the plist, and I am now happy.
For everybody's information, to know what I did, it is enough to know to add Dictionary items to the  PersistentMenu-lastUsedAlarms, with 3 fields:
-- AlarmTypeKey (this determines if you want a sound, or else an email, or else the other default alarm type keys. For example, sending an email is a Number, value 4; having a message with sound is a Number, value 3)
-- AlarmDurationKey: This is a Number, in seconds, that determines when you want your alarm to trigger. E.g: -172800 will be two days before. Must be negative for "before", of course)
-- AlarmParameterKey: This is a String, where you store the value that you want the alarm to have. For example, if you want an email to be sent, the AlarmTypeKey will be 4, as explained above, and this field will contain your email address. Instead, if you want the alarm to be a sound, the AlarmTypeKey will be 3 and this field will have the name of the sound you want (e.g., Basso).
That's it. Thanks a lot for the solution!

  • Can you set the type of alert in iCal on the iPad?

I have an iPad (1st generation) with the latest iOS5. I love the new iOS and especially the way that iCloud makes things more seamless between my devices. I do have an issue with iCal, however. When I set an event in iCal in OSX, I can set the alert to be a message, message with sound, email, etc. By default, if I set an event in iCal on my iPad the alert is a message. I can find no way to change this. If there is a way, please tell me.
Because of this, I never use iCal on iPad to set alerts because I like to use message with sound. This greatly reduces the functionality of iCal on iPad because, for me, it can only be used as a calendar event viewer. Any help would be appreciated. Note: I have contacted apple feedback about this issue.
In a related, but less important issue, I find that the settings for the timing of the alert are very limited in iCal on iPad. On iCal in OSX one can set the alert time for either the time of the event, or pretty much any amount of time prior to the event. On the iPad, iCal will only let you set it to the day of the event, 1 or 2 days before, or 1 week before the event. A limitation, but not crippling. However, if anyone knows how to set the timing of the event on iPad's iCal with more specificity I would really like to know.
    Thanks!

Under Settings, Sounds, you can set an alert sound for calendar events.
For timed events, you can set the alert for a range of times from 5 minutes before upwards (e.g.15 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour). For all-day events, the range is as you described.
You can set the alert for each event as you create it (or edit it later)
You can set default alerts for all-day event,s timed events, and birthdays (i.e. different defaults for each type) in Settings, Mail, Contacts and Calendar, default Alerts.
    Does that help?

  • Can't enter multiple alerts in iCal

I can no longer program multiple alerts. After entering the first one, no popup appears to enable setting a second. This feature worked a week ago. Any ideas?
    Re desktop version 5.0.2 (1571)

    Greetings,
What changed in the last week?  Did you add a new calendar server (iCloud / Google / Yahoo etc.) or make other changes to the computer?
    Try:
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Language & Text > Formats > Region. Region should be set to the country of your choice. Do not have it set to "Custom" as this can have unexpected results in the iCal window.
If that doesn't resolve the issue:
    1. First make an iCal backup:  Click on each calendar on the left hand side of iCal one at a time highlighting it's name and then going to File Export > Export and saving the resulting calendar file to a logical location for safekeeping.
    2. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    3. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
--- NOTE: To get to "Home > Library" in Lion: Click anywhere on the desktop and then click on the "Go" menu at the top of the computer screen while holding down the "option" key on the keyboard.  You will see "Library" in the menu.
    4. Launch iCal and test.
    If the issue persists:
    1. Go to iCal > Quit iCal
    2. Remove the following to the trash and restart your computer:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.ical
Home > Library > Calendars > Calendar Cache, Cache, Cache 1, 2, 3, etc. (Do not remove Sync Cache or Theme Cache if present)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.ical (There may be more than one of these. Remove them all.)
--- NOTE: Removing these files may remove any shared (CalDAV) calendars you may have access to. You will have to re-add those calendars to iCal > Preferences > Accounts.
    3. Launch iCal and test.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can I send an alert from iCal to a group in my contacts?

First post so please go gentle.
I have just set up an iCloud.com calendar and successfully synched to my iphone and ipad.  I have also set up so I can update contacts via iCloud.  All working great so far.
Anyway, I manage my son's football team and have a calendar for their fixtures, with the events containing info such as kick off time, and location of the match.  In my contacts, I have a group for player's parents, and would ususally have to manually send a message each week reminding them of the game, kick off time etc.  Is there a way that I can get iCal to automatically send a reminder or alert to this group by email with this information?
I hope that is clear?  If there's not a way to do it using the native apps, does anyone know of any 3rd pary apps that can do this?  Or do I need to maybe switch to Google?
    Thanks
    Mark

  • Alerts in iCal with a CalDAV Account

The alerts in my iCal when setting an appointment in my CalDAV account, don't appear.
If I set an event in my iCloud calendar the reminder will set in automatically as configured in preferences. But if I create an event in iCal under my CalDAV account then that event automatically erases the alert and I need to set the alert manually from every event, even though I have configured that every event has an alert.
My CalDAV account is a gmail account.

The second script is working but if I need to change the link it will not allow me to edit or delete it in iCal on my desktop. The only way to edit it is to use the online iCal in me.com.
And the worst problem is that the url does not show up on my iPhone iCal. The iPhone version of iCal has limited features. So if I'm away from the office on my iPhone I still have the problem of having no link to my iCal appointment. I still end up having to use both iCal and Contacts as separate Apps.
I still dont understand why Apple wouldnt make these 2 Apps work together! It seems so obvious! thanks anyway.

  • Time Machine random alert

I'm using Time Machine to backup my MacBook. As I use an external drive (which isn't always connected) for the backups I've turned off Time Machine, and I perform the backups manually, usually once a day.
Ever since upgrading to Snow Leopard (from Leopard), I've been getting system alerts saying:
"Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk is not available."
These messages appear quite randomly, 2-3 times a day.
I've tried setting Time Machine on in the preferences, then setting it back off.
    I ran permissions repair.
    Nothing changed.
any ideas on what causes this alert and how to make it stop appearing?
    Thanks,
    Omer.

  • Continuing alerts for iCal Events after canceling

    Hello everyone,
I suspect what I'm about to describe is a bug, but hopefully I'm wrong and there is a setting for this. For any iCal Events I have, which are typically listed as all day events, I get continual reminder notifications even after CANCELLING.  Anyone seeing this?  Is there a way to stop it or do you think this is a bug.
FYI, I do have calendar turned on for iCloud, but not reminders.  This happens on both my Macbook Pro and my iMac.

OK...I've found the culprit and an easy workaround.  First, Desktop Manager for Mac is the problem.  If you set any event alert reminders in iCal to "Message and Sound" you'll get both the message and the sound on your Mac, but Desktop Manager for Mac mangles this somehow when the event is synched to the BB.  The event makes it over, but when the event is selected on the BB and opened, the alert is set to "None".
To fix this, simply change all event alert reminders in iCal to "Message" (without the sound) and re-sync using Desktop Manager now the events on your BB have the same alert parameters as in iCal and their alerts now popup when scheduled and they have an audible sound.
Come on, RIM...Mac users deserve better than this.  It took you 12 years to get us a real (well almost real) Desktop Manager, so now give it the same features as you provide in the Windows Desktop Manager.  But since I know nothing in this forum ever makes it to RIM...we'll have to hope they figure this out on their own.

  • Alerts from iCal to Mail Being Tagged as Junk

All of the iCal alerts I have set to send an email to my email address are being tagged by Mail as Junk. The only filter I have set for Junk is "if not in my address book." How do I get this to stop?
    Thanks.
    Ted

This is what I have set up to prevent this problem:
Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail
Uncheck: Filter junk mail before applying my rules
    Mail > Preferences > Rules
    Add Rule: iCal Alarms
If all of the following conditions are met:
    From Contains [email protected]
    Subject Begins with Alarm
    Perform the following actions:
    Set Color of background Red
    Stop evaluating rules
