Random Application hangs having installed Mavericks 10.9.1

Having installed mavericks 9.1 just before Christmas I find various applications hang at random points. I list some of those happening since 28th December:
Finder "Open With"
Save As (in Powerpoiint)
Save AS (in Grab)
Start Lightroom (get initial screen splash, lock the database but never get the Library screen up) Had this several times
Start Elements 11
On Opening USB memory stick
On inserting CF card into reader
On Saving an Excel file
On loading a new page in Safari
In Word on "save as"
In Word when highlighting a word (to make it bold)
In most cases (but not all) A Forced Quite leaves something in the running processes whiuch stops the application from starting again and stops me doing a clean shutdown (I have to do a power off and power on)
After a restart, most of the time the application will start up cleanly but on at least two occasions I have had to reinstall mavericks as I couldn't get to the main screen (although in both cases a Safe start came up OK.
I have done Disk checks on all disks with nothing showing.
I have Console running but I can't recognise anything in there as being a significant error, along with Activity Monitor.
I have also run Etrecheck and removed all startup items.
I am running on an 18BG Early 2008 mac pro which has never suffered from this type of problem before. The only applications which give any hang dumps are Microsoft (Office 2011) which have been duly sent off.
Can anybody suggest how to go about debugging this situation?

This is a very common problem with Mavericks and Mountain Lion. I had this issue so many times and many others probably did too. I went into Preferences-->Security&Privacy and select "Anywhere" under allow apps from.
If that doesn't work. You should repair disk permissions on your hard drive. There is a case where the files on the hard drive is not organized and therefore, the mac doesn't recognize it. Go into disk utility, select Macintosh HD or your mac partition, then press repair disk permissions. My macbook pro took 15 minutes for this disk repair process.

  • Installing ad-hoc application hangs on installing

I have developed an iPad application, and added a friend to my provisioning profile and rebuilt my application.  I then sent him the .ipa and he has dropped it into his itunes application, and he can see the icon on his home screen but it just hangs on "installing".
Any ideas?  Also, he said that the icon doesn't show in his iTunes but it does show in the organizer when i archived the application.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Argh... thanks, xnav!  I feel silly, not to have seen that.. never needed it before, lol
Plenty of info being generated there.  Also, I offloaded my app launch setup code to a separate method call and now TestFlight registers the launch too.
Apparently a nib is having problems loading... loads no problem when I run it from xcode!

  • Version 10.9.5 - missing essential applications/re-download & install mavericks

I'm missing all of my applications, and finding it hard to reinstall Mavericks. In short, is there a direct web link to download Mavericks? My computer does not have the 'app store' application on it right now, and I cannot seem to find a way to download it from apple website, besides Yosemite, which I don't want because it's causing issues with my audio recording software/hardware. my only previous backup I made under Mavericks did not have my 'applications' folder backed up which was my stupid mistake, as I changed that earlier and forgot to change back.
Hope this makes sense any help appreciated.

You'll need to boot to Recovery mode and reinstall the OS from there.

  • MacBook Air 2010 died after installing Mavericks, happened to anyone else?

Having installed Mavericks onto my early edition MacBook Air it has totally died.
    - It will no longer charge, in fact the light doesn't come on at all on the Magsafe (tried two different chargers both still charge my MacBook Pro)
This happened after I turned it off for the first time having installed the new OS.
Anyone else had their Air turned into a brick by Mavericks?
I've got a genius bar appointment on Saturday but thought it was worth seeing if anyone else had suffered the same issue. Keen to know if my battery had just reched the end of it's life (although it was still lasting a good number of hours under Moutain Lion) or if Mavericks has caused the issue.
    Thanks!

The panic was caused by the Yamaha audio device or its software, maybe with help from one or more of the other third-party system modifications you've installed. I suggest you disconnect the device, back up all data, and then remove the software according to the developer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's an improvement. If there isn't, post your results.

  • After installing Mavericks, random, temporary freezes occur

Since installing Mavericks on my 2010 Mac Pro I experience random, temporary application freezes of all applications. I can still move the mouse cursor, but I cannot click on anything or type anything until the computer starts to respond again.  The freeze may last about 30 seconds or less, and then the computer behaves normally for a while.  But after a minute or two, the same thing happens again, over and over.
Thinking that it might be my Logitech MX Revolution Mouse and DeNivo keyboard software, I tried to download the latest Logitech software, but I only get an Error 404, so I gave up.  I'm not real confident that will help even when I can download, so I gave up on Mavericks for now and restored 10.8.5, and now all is well again.

Mid 2011 Mac Mini Sever here, and having the same issue with slightly different symptom. Diffrenece is during the random short freez, I can NOT move the curser. Also, keyboard is unresponsive..ex. the capslock LED will not illuminate when pressed. I do have a Logitech MX Revolution Mouse as well.  Right now it is my only mouse, so as soon I can get to the store, I am going to try it out with a apple trackpad

  • Macbook Pro randomly restarting since installing Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I've got a mid-2010 Macbook Pro. Since I installed Mavericks, about 6 months ago, it's started restarting at random (it just goes black and then goes through the reboot cycle. Sometimes it can happen a few times in the same hour - sometimes once a week. It doesn't seem related to what programs I have open or how hot it is running. It often happens a few minutes after the machine has awoken from sleep, but this isn't always the case.
I was convinced that this was due to the faulty nVidia chip which was included in some mid-2010 MBPs so I took it to the Apple genius bar and showed them this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088 (having first done a clean install of OSX).
They ran "VST (Video System Test) 1.0.3v5 for Macbook Pro (15-inch, mid-2010)" and it passed. They then took the laptop into the back room and "ran some more hardware tests", all of which passed too.
I bought the machine back to my house and started reinstalling software. About 10 minutes ago it restarted itself again (with the same GPU panic message and GPUPanic.cpp:127 line). The only difference between this restart and those before I reinstalled Mavericks is that the previous restarts would be proceeded by a "your computer needs to restart because of a problem" whereas just now no message was displayed until the computer fully rebooted, and then a "your computer was rebooted because of an issue" message was displayed.
I've only installed a few pieces of software, and nothing that I thought would mess with the graphics drivers.
Could anyone please take a look at my logs and see if anything looks amiss? The genius has stressed that it cannot be hardware related so hopefully somebody will spot something.
The only other thing perhaps worth mentioning is that I have 3rd party RAM and a 3rd party SSD harddrive in there. Could either of these be responsible?
    Thanks,
    Joe

I just wanted to share my experiences with Apple recently.
To give some background: my mid-2010 Macbook Pro started restarting randomly after I upgraded to Mavericks and the logs indicated that it was the GPU issue. I am currently residing in Dublin so my nearest Apple store is over 100 miles away in Belfast (a 2-3 hour drive or train journey).
I first took the machine to the Apple store on the 8th March, having first made an appointment at the Genius Bar. I had entered details of the issue into the concierge system and the Genius seemed to know what he was dealing with. He ran the GPU test - which it promptly passed - but, after this point, I didn't see the Genius again as he disappeared into a back room, never to return.
About 20 minutes later (as I was beginning to get annoyed) someone else came and asked if I was being helped. I explained the situation to him and he hurriedly offered to "take it in the back to run further tests". I agreed and left the machine with him - but in all the kerfuffle I left my charger behind.
I went back and collected my laptop as the store was closing. I briefly discussed the test results with a different Genius, who suggested that it must be a software issue. He said that - as I had restored the OS to factory settings before the visit - it was most probably fixed. Given that it had not restarted since I restored the machine (the night before), I agreed and left.
Unfortunately, I didn't realise that I'd forgotten my charger until I got home. I called the store the next day but was told that it's "not Apple policy" to post things out and that if I wanted the charger I'd have to collect it from the store myself. I was then told that it would probably be better for me to "just buy a new one" given the distance involved!
Anyway, the next day I was reinstalling some software and the machine restarted again. I made a post on here and was told that the logs still suggested a faulty GPU, and that the Genius should have spotted it.
So I made another trip to Belfast!
First, I tried to collect my charger. After some crossed wire between staff members, it turned out that someone had labelled my charger and left it on the side for me to collect, but then someone else had then thrown it away. To Apple's credit, however, they gave me a new one off the shelf without hesitation.
Next, the Genius ran the same test again and this time it failed. I asked the Genius why it would be the case that the EXACT same test would pass one day and fail the next but he didn't have any ideas. It is *my* theory that the test not only checks the GPU itself, but also looks in the log folder for logs that indicate a faulty GPU and that, by restoring the OS before I took it in, I effectively "cleared" this folder and made it impossible to detect.
Anyway, he next mentioned that it was out of warranty and that I would need to pay for a repair. However, I had a printout from the trading standards site which outlined the Sale of Goods act and how (under UK law) we are protected for 6 years from purchase if a product is defective. He spoke to a couple of managers and agreed to replace the motherboard without charge.
Next, he wanted proof that I'd purchased the machine directly from the Apple website, as apparently their records only go back 18 months (!). Unfortunately, I lost some emails a couple of years back and no longer had the receipt but - after another discussion with managers - he agreed to proceed anyway.
He then said that I would have to come and collect the machine in a few days. The trading standards guidelines say that the RETAILER is responsible for arranging collection and delivery of the faulty product so I asked whether they could ship it to Dublin. However, he argued that to do this I would have to rearrange everything through AppleCare and have them collect/deliver the machine. So, having gotten this far (and not wanting them to change their minds), I just agreed.
Anyway, I received an email saying that it was ready a few days later so I went back to Belfast again and collected it. So far (touch wood) it's been working perfectly and without a single restart.
    So, the things to remember:
    1) The test may not detect the issue the first time but that doesn't mean it's not there
    2) Restoring OSX to factory settings MAY impede the ability for the test to detect the issue
    3) It doesn't matter if you're out of warranty if you're covered by Consumer Law (check out the law in your country)
    4) Don't leave your charger in the Apple store!
NB: I'm not a lawyer, of course, and none of this constitutes legal advice; I'm just hoping it will help some people as there seem to be a LOT of folks having this issue.

I installed Mavericks yesterday and have now got problems with QuarkXpress 9. Every time I click on an image and try to move it the application crashes. Anyone had similar problems or got any suggestions?

    Hi Guys
Updated my 2 imacs to Maverick yesterday. Schoolboy error on my part not checking if there were problems with any programmes before I did.
Quark is now a nightmare with no short term answer on the way. As a Quark user for over 20 years this is just another reason to hold your hands up and say OK Indesign you win I will have to learn how to use you and Quark will be a distant memory.
I am told there will probably be no solution to getting quak 9 running on Maverick and that you will need to update to 10 in about 2-3 weeks to get back to normal. Having spent a few bob on 2 versions of 9.5 only in Feb this year i didn't really want to upgrade yet.
So its cough up to carry on using Quark or learn Indesign.
I have lost faith in Quark as they are quick to send me e-mails asking me to upgrade to this and that version, why didn't they send one out saying do not upgrade to Maverick. Perhaps they know there loyal follwing will uograde to 10 and will generate a nice little bonus before Xmas.
Lots to do today and will now take 10 times longer to do it. Is this 2013 or 1974!!!!!
If anyone hears of a solution please post ASAP

Remove "Air Display" and see whether there's an improvement.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
