Random black out and shut down.

iMac running Lion, 4GB RAM, plenty of disk space. Everything runs great, but once or twice each day, screen goes black and Mac shuts down. Restarts and continues to run fine. Any suggestions for solving issue greatly appreciated.
Lenny.

Well if it's only once or twice, it's probably not an over-heating issue.
These may help fix it:

I'm having similar problems with my Epson Stylus DX5000.  There was no in-built driver available (the generic old and new Stylus drivers didn't work), so downloaded the latest driver from Epson site.  It shows as being available to print to, but just sends data to the print queue then job disappears.
I hope you're right C F McBlob, I could do with printing today but if there are new drivers available from November 5, then so be it.

  • My Mac has been randomly blacking out and is unresponsive.

My Mac has been randomly going to a black screen during use and becomes unresponsive. Usually I can get it going by pushing the button on the back, but this time it is not working. I have even unplugged trying to reboot. Any suggestions?

Yes ML latest build. It's very random. I have checked temps of power supply etc and they seem ok, not too high. It basically loses connection on the ATV as the iMac and iTunes has shut down. I can straight away switch it back on and no crash reports are visible in the folders or console. It's very annoying when watching a movie as you can imagine.
I posted the content of the console here https://discussions.apple.com/message/23414478#23414478

  • Macintosh HD greyed out and shut down after progress bar complets

Hello everyone, after i manually closed my macbook by holding the shut down button for 5secs due to an application crush, my macbook pro doesnt seem to be able to boot anymore. It executes the progress bar under the apple  icon on the screen (trying to repair my hd) and after it completes the process, it shuts down. When i press cmd+R, i can see from disk utilities the 500GB hard drive and the macintosh hd. The 500GB total hard drive is normal (even with no problems to fix after running verify and repair) but the Macintosh HD-part is greyed out and verify/repair fail with an error when i click on them. What should i do? i dont think its a hard drive failure. At least, how can i back up my system or some files? from disk utilities the new image function should be executed for the macintosh hd partition and not for the parent 500GB hard disk in order to make a backup, right?

    1) In a Finder window, select the Macintosh HD. Can you see the contents? If yes, you can select to drag over files.
    2) Download SuperDuper (free) When it opens does it recognize the internal drive in the popup? If yes, you will need to make a second portion on your external drive for the clone of your internal drive.
    3) If you can't see the contents or the drive in Finder or SuperDuper then you will need to download and run Mavericks over the internal drive.

  • Macbook Air 2011 CPU Maxes Out then Overheats and Shuts Down...

I've been having this problem for a while now but have learned to deal with it with SMC Fan Control to basically keep my fans maxed out at all times. This is obviously not ideal.
The problem is that at any given time some small, random task in activity monitor shows CPU usage that is very high, often at least 50% CPU and other times as high as 120% It has happened with the tasks like dock, safari web content and virtually any other task you can imagine.
For example, I just tried emptying my recycling bin and it hung half way through then my computer shut down. What is going on here?
    Details:
    - Macbook Air mid-2011 running Mavericks
    - Never have more than one app open at any given time, usually just Safari with about 5 tabs, max
    - 3rd party applications running in background include Dropbox, Copy, Backblaze, Flux, Sophos anti virus, Jumpcut, Caffeine and that's it
If I'm doing something like a Time Machine backup, I have to disable Wifi, max out the fans and only then will the Macbook Air remain cool enough to complete the backup, otherwise the Time Machine process maxes out the CPU, overheats and shuts down. This happens with virtually everything now.
How can I start trouble shooting this problem? I've run the hardware and system repair checks with no results, done an SMC reset, etc.
This really seems like a software issue more than anything, like something related to the way tasks/processes are handled...any ideas anyone? This is such an annoying problem!

Do the problems also occur in "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

Ignore the MacKeeper ad no matter what else you decide.
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Just sits there occupying very little space & never interfering, unless you need to invoke it in Single User Mode.

  • IPod Touch 2.0.1 Reboots and shuts down randomly

I have an 8gb iPod touch on the 2.0.1(5b108) firmware that now reboots and shuts down randomly while just sitting idle. I've tried restoring and resetting and it still does this. In terms of the shutting down randomly it seems like my hold button is sticking or broken, but I can't explain the random restarting. This has only been happening since I updated to 2.0.1. Any advice?

As posted before as m9performance but the forum would not let me logo on as that.
This has been going on for some time now Apple was to fix this problem with the 2.0 update absolute rubbish it is now worse that before just turning it self off and resetting it self e.g. tonight from 17-30h to 18-45h it did this 3 soddin times.
Where as before it would be about once every 3 weeks or monthly it is about time Apple started to honour their customers with a product that works e.g. it dose what it says on the box and plays music until the customer tells it not to.
Come on Apple fix up and fix your product lots of people have mp3 players with out the touch problems like I have said before never mind bringing out a new bigger one 32G get the old ones working first. At the end of the day it is down to YOU Apple and not for the users to have to keep posting the same problems hoping that you as a company decide to fix your mistakes and eventually look after your customers.

  • IPod 4G keeps crashing, freezing and shutting down randomly

I think since the IOS7 update, my Ipod keeps on skipping songs, freezing on apps, crashing on apps and sometimes
shutting down randomly. I have tried deleting from multitask, and shutting down (which only works for like 10 mins).
How can I fix this? And repair is too expensive.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
