Random characters appear in print

I am using Word 2010 to create my documents as both .doc and .docx.
I convert them to pdfs using Acrobat 9 Pro.
When I send the pdfs to clients they display and print properly for all of my clients except for one.
This client is a government department and whenever my documents have any styling in them such as bold or italic the characters display on the monitors OK but they print as random symbols.
Any suggestions please?

I am guessing a bit, but here are some things to try:
1. Be sure ALL fonts are embedded (using print or press job settings usually take care of that)
2. Check the use of font downloading for the print. That may be the issue that the individual is having that is printer/driver dependent.
Don't know if either will help, but at least they are some things to try. Also, try to find out the printer, OS, version of Acrobat, etc (or if a different viewer is being used, even Reader) and provide that to help in the future.

  • Random character appears when outlining text in Illustrator CS4 !!!

    Hi All,
    Firstly, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    My problem is shown below, I have an artwork containing live text produced in Illustrator CS4 on a Mac. On outlining the file for forwarding to prepress, a random "D" appears at the end of one of the sentences. I have been unable to find any reason for this. The "D" is not visible when the document is viewed in Outline Mode, it is not visible when hidden characters are shown, it cannot be selected using the text cursor, it appears regardless of what typeface is used, and there are no effects or transparencies applied to the text. Obviously this is of great concern, we produce artwork using live fonts, and on approval outline the files and forward them to a prepress bureau, the result of random characters appearing on printed material could prove very costly.
    If the Illustrator document is saved as a CS2 compatible file from CS4, opened in CS2 and outlined this does not occur.
    Thanks,

    Same thing here, but in CS3. Files came from a client, but appear to have been created and saved in CS3 also. I couldn't fix it with CS5.
    In our case, it's a phantom W that sits on its own line before another W. No hard return, no soft return, no spaces, nothing shows with invisibles on. You can select it (using the shift and arrow keys) and format it, and the changes show up when you outline it. Select it and type a different character, and it winds up on the next line next to the "real" W, as it should. Double-clicking the word selects the phantom letter as well.
    Type is area type, and it's rotated 180° (packaging). Original fonts were Trajan Pro and UniversLTStd.
    Anyone?

  • Random characters after computer name

    Hello,
    We have a new issue with our agent deployment since we use MDT to deploy our workstations.
    When computer register to ZCM some random characters appear after computer name, for example:
    Computer name: corporate001
    ZCM computer name: corporate001-741132927c2e6f41b5569a9f9409b983
    Do you have an explaination?
    ZCM Agent is automatically installed after deployment through a .vbs script.
    cscript ZCMscript.vbs
    Code:
    Set objShell = CreateObject("Shell.Application")
    objShell.ShellExecute "PreAgentPkg_AgentCompleteDotNet.exe", "-q " & "-x"
    strComputer = "." ' local computer
    strProcess = "Setup.exe"
    Do Until isProcessRunning(strComputer,strProcess)
    WScript.Sleep(5000)
    Loop
    Do While isProcessRunning(strComputer,strProcess)
    WScript.Sleep(5000)
    Loop
    WScript.Quit 0
    ' Function to check if a process is running
    FUNCTION isProcessRunning(BYVAL strComputer,BYVAL strProcessName)
    DIM objWMIService, strWMIQuery
    strWMIQuery = "Select * from Win32_Process where name like '" & strProcessName & "'"
    SET objWMIService = GETOBJECT("winmgmts:" _
    & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" _
    & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
    IF objWMIService.ExecQuery(strWMIQuery).Count > 0 THEN
    isProcessRunning = TRUE
    ELSE
    isProcessRunning = FALSE
    END IF
    END FUNCTION

    Yes, the random number is the "Device GUID".
    In your Example there would already be a device called "corporate001" in your zone.
    The GUID is added since there cannot be two devices with the same name.
    There are reconciliation rules that determine "matches".
    Most likely, your rules rely upon MAC and/or SN and this changed instead of relying upon Workstation Name.
    No one way is "Correct".
    It really comes down to what works for you.
    Most likely a tweak of the rules to rely more upon "Workstation Name" may work best for you since I suspect your devices are in a domain if using MDT, which means the names are unique.

  • When I print a document with Arabic script in In Design the characters appear in an inverted form, in the opposite direction, while the printer doesn't do this with other software such as Word

    When I print a document with Arabic script in In Design the characters appear in an inverted form, in the opposite direction, while the printer doesn't do this with other software such as Word

    (The small field at the top of questions is to type just a title; the large field is to type your full question in, along with anything else that may help us help you.)
    When you say "print", do you mean the text is correct in your InDesign file? If you export the document to a PDF, is it still correct? Final test: if you print the PDF to your printer (making sure you use the same driver and setting), is it wrong? Then it's your printer driver, trying to be smart when it should not. Locate a Settings dialog where you can switch off options such as this one. Were I a betting person, I'd tell you to look for something called "Auto-correct mirrored documents".

  • [PART SOLVED] Random j, k characters appearing on lines. A vim issue?

    Hi There,
    I recently noticed that when scrolling around a file using the keys j and k in normal mode that random j and k characters appear at the end of lines. Initially I thought this was a terminal issue so I switched terminals, no luck. I removed all erroneous crap from .vim, no luck. I have googled around a bit, and it appears this is a known issue with jslint, but this is occuring with no plugins. Ctrl-l removes the random characters, and they don't appear to be getting written to the file, but it is annoying non the less.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for the reply. In my case, it appears more frequent when you scroll back and forth over pages using j and k. I haven't noticed anything with the 'O' command but I will keep an I out. I haven't been able to find the root cause of this, nor have I found any 'real' fixes so I either deal with it or use emacs with VIM bindings. I'll consider this closed.

  • Random characters displayed on preview and print

    I am using Crystal Reports XI to create several reports for our users to run off our accounting system.  On most computers the preview and printout is correct but on a few computers the text is displayed with random characters.  We use several different printer models (mostly HP) and I was told from our accounting business partner that it is a problem with the print drivers.
    At one point I thought the problem was with the Arial font so I changed to Times New Roman but I still have one user that is having trouble.
    Most of the problems we have are with text headers not with the data itself, although I have see the entire report not print properly on a couple computers.
    Is there any work around to have these reports print properly on all computer and printer combinations?

    Hi Eric,
    Please let me know the following:
    -Is the report using the same printer driver it was originally created with? Is this the latest printer driver?
    -If you only see TTC font types, do you have this option selected? (Control Panel | Fonts | Tools | Folder Options | True Type Fonts Tab)
    -Is the their any specific printer driver through which the report does not print correctly?

  • Deskjet 5525 printing random characters, one line per page when printing both sides of page

    Hi. I have a deskjet 5525 wireless all in one printer.
    I have installed all of the necessary hardware and have updated it. We have two computers running windows 7, 64 bit. I have not been able to update the firmware on the printer because the HP Device Updater program that does it cannot communicate with the printer via usb cable or wireless on two different computers I have tried.
    When trying to print two sided documents, it will print ok for about two pages, but then, it will start printing on line per page of random characters, blurred lines of text, gargabe basically.
    This is the second printer as the vendor replace the first one with the same problem. You would say, oh a software problem, but I have reinstalled the HP Deskjet 5520 series SW a couple of times, reinstalled the printer, but the problem continues.
    An old HP deskjet 3845 worked for us pretty well on the same computers.
    Please help.

    Hi Onemangosta,
    I would like to help with the garbled text you are experiencing. I have found a great document for you to use and I can also help you with the firmware update.
    Troubleshoot text that might be gibberish, nonsense, or look garbled or scrambled
    In order to update the firmware on your printer ensure the printer is on the wireless network and touch the Web Services icon (this icon is the 1st of the 4 that run across the top of the front panel - looks like 2 little cell phones). Scroll through the Web Services menu, find and select Product Updates, select Check for Product Updates.
    If the printer is already up to date the front panel will say so, if it is not, the download and install will begin. It is possible you were unable to do the update form the computer because the printer does not need an update. The HP Device Updater will only see a printer that requires the update.
    Hope this helps.

  • JSP/Servlets: Extra Characters appear randomly.

    One of the major problems that we are having with our JSPs and Servlets is these extra characters (probably in hexa format and probably equal to the content length of the output) keep appearing at random. If the output is small then you see these characters just once - at the top, but if the output is long (like the result of a query being displayed within an html table), these characters appear randomly anywhere in between the generated output and break the html.
    If the same resource is accessed via the Database listener http endpoint then this problem does not occur - i.e. when you bypass Apache.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ashish.

    one more thing...the code runs properly on localhost... i tested it on my pc n it was fine..both in firefox and IE...
    i guess there is a specific syntax i need to follow (strict syntax) but i dunno what it is...:(

  • Random wrong characters appear when typing in Firefox--why?

    While typing in Firefox, random wrong characters appear (e.g. I type "i" and "n" appears). If I go back and retype it, the same wrong character may appear two or three times, then the correct character appears. This happens while using gmail, but also, for example, when entering search terms into Yahoo. It does not happen while using other browsers such as Chrome, and it does not happen using other applications.

    the wrong type characters kept appearing--I
    would type the letter i and a 5 would appear instead.
    This would indicate you have activated the feature which turns the right side of the keyboard into a numerical keypad. It might be Fn-F6 that controls this -- sorry I don't have a notebook and am not sure exactly how this works.

  • Random Characters insterted into Crystal Reports string fields

    I'm having a problem where random characters are being inserted into string fields in my crystal reports, I talked to a representative and they are unable to fix the problem, so I'm asking here if someone has a workaround.  The characters are always outside of the normal set of characters, so I'd like to know if there is a way to only allow certain characters in a given field using formulas.  (for example, at a very simple level, i would input a list of "legal characters" and the field in crystal wouldn't display anything but those characters)
    thanks for your time and help

    Sorry, i think I've been a bit imprecise so far
    So these characters ONLY appear when printing the report and not when previewing the report in Crystal Reports?
    They appear when previewing, when actually printing, everything after the characters is cut off
    Are you printing directly from CR or from Enterprise/Infoview or another custom application?
    From CR (both to PDF and paper)
    When did you update your print driver last?
    Not sure, although this may be moot since it also shows up in the preview?
    Have you printed on another printer and does it too exhibit the same behavior?
    Same as above?
    Was the report created by you in CRXI? Are your regional settings set to English (language)?
    Yes I created the report in CRXI, and in terms of the regional settings, I'm not sure but would assume so, how do I check/change this?

  • Text objects contain random characters

    Post Author: RobR
    CA Forum: General
    Greetings!
    I am running into an extremely irritating problem with CR XI:  text objects on my report are printing random characters.  This happens in print preview and in printing the report, but the one time I tried exporting a report into a PDF file, it did not happen.  I have seen the problem go away if I log off or restart my computer, but it is not reliable.  Has anyone seen anything like this?

    Some further information:  This problem is related to fonts.  When I use Courier New or Times New Roman, the problem appears.  When I use Comic Sans MS, it doesn't.  A given text string always produces the same characters for a font, but for the problem fonts the characters aren't correct.  When I click Edit Text, the text suddenly appears correctly, but as soon as I stop editing the text, the text reverts back to the incorrect characters.
    Uninstalling and reinsalling CR XI did not solve the problem.

  • Graphs show random characters instead of image in 11.1.1.6 post upgrade

    After upgrading from 11.1.15 to 11.1.16 any new or existing analysis with a graph is showing

    in the view area when the chart is created.
    The other data views (table, pivot) appear fine.
    Any ideas on what may have caused this?

    First of all you will have to install 10.2.0.1 and try to bring up database with that.
    I hope database was shut down cleanly and you have all datafiles/controlfile available.
    Once you succeed in that then only you can upgrade the database to 11G.
    There is no other way.... you will have to check first with 10G software
    Also while upgrading follow the upgrade guide properly...
    Upgrade path will be :
    10.2.0.X.0 TO 11.1.0.6.0
    1. Install 11.1.0.6.0 software
    2. Upgrade the database to 11.1.0.6.0

  • Copy in existing site is now just random characters

    I apologize if this has been asked before...I did a search but couldn't find anything relevant.
    I just opened up iWeb to update my site, and all of my copy has been replaced with random characters. Here's the weird part: if I copy the gobbledygook and paste it (i.e., to put a sample in this post), the actual text shows up.
    Any idea what is going on here? This is my professional website, and I'm really hoping it's salvageable!

    Try the following:
    1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
    2 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    3 - reboot.
    4 - launch iWeb and see if the domain file will open and appear normally.

  • Random characters in IRPT

    I have a simple "hello world" web page.
    <html>
        <head>
         <title>Hello Title</title>
        </head>
        <body>
                   Hello World
        </body>
    </html>
    In HTML it displays normally.  As an IRPT it issues random characters at the start of the page display  .
    The first line of an  IE display of the "source" shows  "" (the quotes are something I added to delimit the text.
    An OD dump of that text is..
    0000000     bbef     c3bf     c2af     c2bb     3cbf      7468   6c6d   0d3e

    Anyone have an idea where the "random" chars come from, and how to get rid of them?

    Hi Ryan,
    it looks like the file was created as UTF-8 encoded as unicode. The "" characters represent a unicode byte order mark which is often used to mark files as being encoded in Unicode. (Wikipedia article ) Notepad on later Windows versions can correctly interpret Unicode encoded files, and sice the byte order mark (BOM) is not part of the text content, omits it from the displayed text.
    Unicode incapable editors will not understand the BOM and thus display it as string content, which is where the "" characters come from. It thus appears that the ServletExec IIS plug-in used to process files with the .irpt file extension does not process unicode files correctly. (ServletExec is not used to render .html files - IIS does this by itself).
    This seems surprising since every other part of xMII seems to be Unicode capable... Does anyone have any experience with Unicode irpt files?
    Is it possible that the irpt file is not actually Unicode but plain ASCII text? Such a discrepancy could cause problems when the ServletExec processor tries to interpret an ASCII encoded file as Unicode, but it does seem surprising...
    Maybe would double-check the file encoding options of Dreamweaver to see if it's outputting UTF-8 or ASCII text... You could also try to remove the first three bytes of the file using a Hex editor and see if that fixes it.
    Good luck,
    Sascha
