Random???? CPU idle temps boot dependent

Does anybody have any idea why CPU idle temps can vary by 3 or 4 deg. C on different boot-ups?
Is it a bug of some form in bios?
For some strange reason my idle temps seem to fluctuate between either 32/33 deg. C or 35/36 deg. C. That temp stays fairly constant and will remain until next boot which may or may not have the lower or higher idle temp readings in both corecenter & NVIDIA MonitorView.
The boot temp also seems to affect the "under Load" temp higher limit by the same amounts (38/39 deg. C vice 41 deg. C).
The reason why I'm worrying about it at all is that I'm wondering if the board is reporting correct temps or if it's just making it up as it goes along.....
Thanks in advance for any thoughts you might have.

I agree here, i dont know what CPU you are running or the MOBO you have since you didnt post it. Your temps seem fine from what you say, as for your fluxuation i would say that maybe your room temp has something to do with it, or maybe its a certain time of the day that the sun shines in your room and rases the temp a little bit. I dont think that your computer just makes it up as it goes...if it says the temp...its most likley the temp. I can simithise with you on wanting to know about temp, im constantly monitoring mine, but i have to say like abouve its not broke...dont fix it, or you might be fixing your whole computer.

Does anybody out there know what the CPU idle temp and fan speed should be? My Core Center shows 28C and 3308 rpm. Not sure if this is correct.

I'd be dancing on top of whatever if I got a 28C idle....

  • Random kernel panic at boot

    Hello guys,
I recently installed Arch to my GF's laptop because she wanted to learn some stuff about how to use it, how it works etc... Unfortunately, there are some (seems like) random kernel panics at boot, I haven't found if it's related to some event or not because I've been trying to reboot it 10x in a row or after a whole day of usage etc. to find out if it's caused by some action but it still seems to be random during the boot. Inspecting the stack trace confused me even more because it doesn't look same with each panic. I captured 3 of them for example (sorry, haven't found a way to get them in text format since they are not stored on disk :-/ ):

Reinstalling the system didn't helped (tried it like 3x), current system is fresh fully updated arch that I installed 2 days ago, There's only basic system with KDE, opensource ati drivers, cpufreq and blacklisted modules (pcspkr, bluetooth, toshiba_bluetooth), I made no other modifications (hopefully) which may affect the system boot.
    Here is the system info:

  • KM2M Combo - 16 degrees CPU idle?!

OK, I'm confused. Both BIOS and pcAlert 4 shows that I have an idle temp on about 16 degrees C. With the board just laying on the floor without a case (I want to test it thoroughly before I go to all the trouble it is to mount it in my custom built metal suitcase). The temp on the floor is around 20 degrees, so that CPU temp is impossible, right?
I got the mobo yesterday for MP3 use in my car (it will replace a Celeron 433, so it's a big step up...). On it I use a 1,2 duron and SDRAM, so you might call it underclocked. And there's a Cooler Master of the Hoover type (noisy, if you get my drift) But still, this is impossible. Or is it? If it's correct, I'm hysterical. Then I won't have to worry about overheating when it's in my car!
And talk about boot times! I'm down to about 10 seconds from hibernation and less than 30 from cold start, and this is on WinXP with networkdrivers!  8)

THe Km2m doesnt have a little sensor inside the cpu socket to read the temps which can result that the motherboard can't display the temperature because theres no sensor to measure the temps from. If you had an XP processor then it would read temps just fine because it has a internal sensor.

  • Idle Temp of 28C (82F) !!! ...but are the fans working?

Ok now that I have your attention :P
Seriously though here is my info, as no one has really posted everything about their MBP's when posting their temps.
    CPU on Idle
    - A cold boot (was off for few hours)
    ambient (room) temp, 15C:
MBP feels like its been in the fridge and starts up with 8C cpu temp. It gets up to 15C, then 24C and stays in mid 30's after 5-10% cpu usage.
    - Waking up from sleep
    ambient temp, 17C:
MPB feels normal, idle temp of 28-38C.
    - Has been on for several hours
    ambient temp, 17C:
If I'm not running many apps it may idle at 38C/41C.
Other times (like now) 46C. MBP feels warm but not hot.
    High CPU Usage
When running 'yes > /dev/null' in Terminal or ripping a CD cpu temp gets to around 75-80C. But will cool quickly once processor is idle again, to around 45-50C.
    Medium CPU Usage
Let's say 20-50% cpu, this is rough guide, I get temp of mid 50's and sometimes above 60C.
(Note: I used Temperature Monitor for temps, and had usually an ambient temp of 17C, though it might be a little warmer. I also have the firmware update from factory).
    Other info:
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B03
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
    And yes I do have a question ^_^;
Is the faint woosh on the left of the keyboard the HD fan or the CPU fan?? Many people are saying with the new firmware their fans run constantly. I initially thought this must be one of the fans.
    MacBook Pro 15" 2GHz, 512MB, Week 28   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   AMD Desktop 2.1GHz, 512MB, WinXP (SP1)

    Those are normal temperatures.
The left fan runs at low speed even when the CPU temps are low. The fans will ramp up, with the right fan running at higher CPU temps. Even with the CPUs running flat out the fans are pretty quiet, especially compared to my old TiBook. During the Hardware Test routines you can hear the fans come on for a short time.
If sensors fail or disconnect the fans will run at full speed constantly. Several people who did the "thermal grease fix" broke sensor connections and had that problem. Speaking of which, I'm glad that thermal grease topic seems to have come to a well-deserved end.

  • G505 high idle temps and fan blowing cold air

    Hello all,
I bought a Lenovo G505 (AMD A6-5200 model) yesterday which had been a display model for the past 3 months. Mostly it is working fine but I noticed the fan seemed to be running quite a bit even when doing nothing on the PC, what's more the air coming out of the laptop is cold.
I installed coretemp to monitor temperatures and it is showing idle CPU temps of around 50C, which seems too high to me and suggests the CPU heatsink is not correctly seated.
I have checked task manager to ensure that no processes are running the CPU up too much, and removed any that were, but the problem still remains.
Can anyone tell me what the idle temps of an A6-5200 should be, so that I can compare to what I am seeing?
I'm skilled enough with PC's and laptops to take it apart and try to re-seat the heatsink with some good thermal paste, however there is a Lenovo sticker over the screws so I guess that would invalidate the warranty if I did it?
    Thanks

Just to add - I ran the dust removal program for a good while just in case.

  • Random cpu spikes in 10.6.3 ??

i have a Mainstage session which runs smoothly and comfortably on my 15" Penryn 2.66GHz 10.5.8 Macbook Pro.
It also runs smoothly and comfortably on a unibody 10.5.8 13" 2.2GHz Macbook Pro.
But my brand new 15" 2.66GHz 10.6.3 Macbook Pro shows random CPU spikes when i run Mainstage.. and my session experiences audio and midi glitching.
Logic Studio is the only software installed on this new machine, aside from the bundled OS stuff.
the sessions were created in Mainstage 2.1
the new machine runs Mainstage 2.1.1
anyone else experiencing anything like this?

Just putting in my voice... I am also getting the same CPU spikes. You are not alone.
I suspect any number of things are causing the spikes, even when everything is idle, from Mainstage itself, the TASCAM US-144 audio interface, Korg nano-series devices, 3rd party plugs (major companies or not).
I just started using Mainstage this week, but I've been using Logic for years.
I know how to set up an efficient channel strip. There is no reason for my CPU to spike. If I use the same series of instruments, fx plugs, sends, aux channels, etc in Logic 9, the CPU barely takes a hit. THe REAL drag here is that the purpose of using Mainstage instead of Logic is the Loopback feature, which is missing in Logic on its own.
At this point, besides Mainstage being the main culprit, I've narrowed it down to two other culprits: NI Guitar Rig 4, and (this one is odd) Audio Damage EOS. When I instantiate either one of these, the CPU dances or finally goes over the edge and "POP" is heard. Have to quit Mainstage to get sound again.
    Buffer overload? Bad memory management/leaks?
I really don't care WHAT the issue is, just as long as I know WHEN Apple will address the problem and issue a fix soon.
    ~r

  • Idle Temp on an MSI 7970 Twin Frozor III BE

What should the standard idle temp and under load temp be on this card?
This is after playing Far Cry 3 for 10 mins..
Everything is set at default out of the box settings and from reviews I am seeing talk of around 70c , but when ever I am playing any games the fan jumps up to very noisy levels and the temp hits 90c.

I've spent a little time looking this thing over.  I agree with flobelix, the fans on the top of the case should blow OUT not in.  The CPU fans should blow OUT also.
I see that you can (or at least used to be able to) order a new door for that case that comes with a window OR a screen.  It seems they send you both the window and the screen material and you choose which one you want to use.  In your case, use the screen.  The screen has mounts on it for four 120mm fans.  I don't think you would have to use four, two might be enough.  And they would be blowing air IN to the case preferably at (or as near as possible to) the graphics card.  When I look at that case it seems to me there would be a air flow dead spot right around your graphics card in the area just above the power supply.
I was also thinking you might want to move your hard drive(s) from the cage that is blocking the 200mm fan in front, to the cage that is right next to your power supply.  Then remove the cage that blocks the 200mm fan.  If you want a fan cooling your hard drives you could still attach a fan to the side of the cage blowing towards the hard drives.  This might improve airflow.

  • CPU will not boot up

CPU will not boot up. When the power button is pressed, either from a cold boot, power off or from a reset, the hard drive begins to operate, then you hear 4 beaps a pause of about 5 seconds and then the fan races.

You may have to repurchase some programs if you can't recover their registration codes, etc... Try though some of the data recovery techniques outlined on my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Also try replacing the clock battery.

  • Idle temps for MSI R7850 Twin Frozr 2GD5/OC?

    Hello everyone,
I'm concerned about my idle temperatures for this card. I just received it and based on reviews, most people are idling around 30C. However, my card is idling above 55C (without OC). I have adequate cooling in my case, and I've even tested it without the side of the case attached. What could cause my idle temperature to be so high?
    Thanks!

Keep in mind you are using dual monitor. Even in idle the card will therefor consum far more power than a vga with just one display connected. Consuming more power means more heat so questionable if the idle temps of "most people" you refered to were also using dual monitor. What are your load temps?
The voltage difference between 2 monitors and 1 is 0.9V vs 0.825V. HOWEVER, I did notice that with a single monitor the GPU Memory clock drops (to 150MHz) during idle, but with dual monitor it stays at full speed when idle (Driver issue? I'm running 12.7 beta). A single monitor drops my idle temps down to around 44/46C. IF I force the GPU memory clock to be at the same idle speed when using a single monitor, the temperature for Dual Monitor during idle drops to 44/46C, the SAME as single monitor. That is at 1.075V. That is still a good 15C above what others are reporting. In this case, I'm not seeing a difference in temp between dual a single monitors when I force the GPU Mem Clock to the idle speed.
With load I get between 70C and 80C running Furmark.
One of the reasons I bought this card was because of its ability to overclock. If I'm already that far above in temp, then I feel like I'm going to hit a wall much sooner than I should. I feel like something weird is going on with my card.

  • How do I limit the user creat new connect when CPU idle 5%?

    my oracle database is 9.2.0.7,
I want to limited the new connection by created when the server (sun solars 5.9) cpu idle <5 % ?

    > I want to limited the new connection by created when the server (sun solars 5.9) cpu idle <5 % ?
This makes absolutely no sense at all. Not even borderline idiotic - it has invaded the land of idiots looking to conquer and become the biggest one of them all. :-)
But there is actually a very easy way to do it. Outside the database in a script, run uptime. It provides the system load averages for the past 1, 5, and 15 minutes. Use awk to extract these load numbers and use that to make the decision whether connectivity can be allowed or must be denied.
Next check if the Oracle Listener is up. If up and connectivity must be denied, shut it down. If down and connectivity must be allowed, start it. Else, leave it as is.
Then sleep for a few minutes and repeat.
To make this into a proper daemon, you can simply add it to /etc/inittab and have the kernel running it for you and respawning it when it runs into a problem and dies.

  • CPU Idle Percentage Near 90 -- Beachball City.

    {Sigh}
    Slow, slow, slow.
Approximately one month ago I upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. My iMac has been sluggish to slow since. The context/problems/actions
There are three accounts on the computer. A root, a system administrator, and a guest account. The problems are much more pronounced in the System Administrator account than in the Guest account. (In hopes of resolving a Snow Leopard install Filevault issue I deleted a System Administrator account and shortly thereafter recreated it, using its original name.)
Put short, the beachball is a frequent visitor whether using Safari, Text Edit, Finder et al. Additionally, logging out of an account takes much more time than it once did: approximately three minutes to log out.
As to Safari -- slow to launch, slow to load pages. Two-five minutes to visit one page.
    What I have tried
    1) Checked Activity Monitor --- Percentage CPU of Safari and others is often at less than one percent. The CPU idle percentage is often in 90% range.
    2) Compared the DNS of the guest account and sys adm account --- Identical.
    3) Uninstalled Flash Player.
    4) Checked Disk Utility --- Verified disk. Errors found. Then through Snow Leopard Install Disk, repaired the Disk. Rechecked. No errors found.
    Additional info if helpful --
    1) The HD is size is 150 GB, only 30 GB in use.
    2) Two GB of Ram; one GB is listed as Free.
Day to day tasks are almost impossible in the sys adm account. Please help.
    Yours,
    Lxloco

Thank you Lyssa, Pondini, and The hatter for taking an interest.
I took some time away from rooting against the Steelers to do some of the homework mentioned above.
    1) File Vault file -- Isn't on this HD; hasn't been on this HD for a couple of weeks. Rather, the file (the sparse bundle) was saved on an external and then deleted from this iMac's HD
    2) Smart Utility HD Check -- Results: "Failing;" what's more: "Pending Bad Sectors: 1." Continuing on, "Completed: read failure;" "Remaining 90%;" and "LBA of First Error: 101643935."
    3) System Log --- "Insert-Hang-Detected." This untrained eye takes immediate note of that message. It is most frequently associated with Safari, Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher, and Mail. An occasional "Query-Hang-Detected" is also spotted.
    4) System Preferences - Login Items --- Only one item reported: A Lexmark Printer that was removed several years ago.
Trying to help myself, elsewhere I read something about a "Performance Update 1.0" from October 2009 and how it could have ameliorated "Insert-Hang-Detected" problems. Yet, when I review the webpage for that Update I fail to see my iMac's model number listed.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3901
Lastly, I will attempt to copy and paste excerpts of the system log. I hope this works and offers insights.

  • A64 clawhammer idle temps

first of all, thanks for the really informative faq.  i had a feeling that there was a temperature misreport when i first entered the bios and saw a 62 C idle!
but i still have some questions.  i'm using a zalman AlCu7000 with AS5, with normal idle temps of ~64-66C, and load temps of ~72-74C.  system temperature holds pretty constant around 35C.  the zalman is spinning at around 2500RPM, and the four case fans (it's a cooler master praetorian) are around 2000RPM.
if i take into consideration an offset of, say, 20C, that's still an idle in the mid 40s.  yet, when i touch the heatsink (at the fins or at the base), it's really quite cool.  i can barely feel any warmth.  should i be worried about this?  i wonder if i'm not establishing good thermal contact between the two.
EDIT:  here are the complete system specs:
    MSI-K8N (duh)
    A64 3000+ Clawhammer "CG"
    2x512MB OCZ performance series pc3500 @ 2.5-3-3-7
    thermaltake 480 purepower
    zalman AlCu7000
    thanks in advance!

no, i'm using the MSI backplate.  i couldn't get the backplate off (no hairdryer available).  i was able to get a nice, snug fit so i didn't think it was a problem.  ugh, that makes me worry.
Man, you really need use the Zalman backplate with their coolers. Those nipples will stick up 1/8" higher than the Zalman plate and leave you with a really poor contact between the CNPS7000 and the chip.
I used the Zalman backplate (paper-side to mobo) as a place to lay my small screwdriver against when prying off the MSI plate. The leverage helps immensely and the other backplate will help protect the mobo in case of slippage.

  • Average idle temp of new Macbooks?

I just got my first Mac, a Macbook 2.16. I downloaded Fan Control to check my fan speed and processor temperature. Now I know that the MBs run hot, but I'm wondering what the average idle temp is? Mines currently sitting at about 110F/43.5C, and I'm thinking this is a little high. I don't have a great baseline to compare against. I have a Dell 1.8 CoreDuo and a Dell Centrino 1.6, and the MB is significantly hotter than the CD. Is this temp abnormally high?

    Hi,
Just looked at my Macbook 2.0GHz and at idle it is running 125F. Sounds like your unit is running a little cold!
