Random Crashes at Idle with M92p SFF

I've got a ThinkCentre M92p that I use as a media center PC/file server in my home entertainment unit. It has run rock-solid for months, but I recently upgraded the stock Radeon video card to a low-profile Radeon HD 7750 (Sapphire). This upgrade has helped tremendously with games and I've never had any problems while using the machine.
However, recently the machine has been randomly crashing while I'm not using it. I can tell because it will not respond to RDP logins and is unavailable on the network. There's nothing on the screen when this happens--but that could be because I'm using the HDMI output on this card which only seems to work when Windows 8 is fully booted. I've checked the Windows Event Log (System) and I see no warnings/errors before the hard-reboot. Temps look good; video card idles around 40 degC and the hard drive is around 36 degC.
The ONLY anomaly I've been able to find is that, a couple of times when I did a hardware check using Lenovo Solution center, the hard drive showed a warning for the short SMART self test. However, the overall test still passed.
Any ideas? Think the hard drive may be going out?
Thanks.

1.  A third of the way down is the diag for the hard drive.  Could be the same was what you've used.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073728
2.  I haven't run Win 8, but every Win since I think Win97 has had this tool.   Go to computer, right click hard drive, properties, tools, error-checking, check scan for bad sectors.   Restart, and it will load and scan before starting Windows.

  • Random Crashes and BSOD with GD65 and i5

Hey all i just built a new rig, and i installed windows 7 64bit, and the computer crashes randomly. You can see the parts in my sig. I have the mobo updated to bios 1.3, and all other components are brand new.
Sometimes the rig will run for 15min, sometimes for 2 hours. Seems to run longer with only 1 stick of ram. Did memtest on both sticks and they both came back fine. Anyone have any clues as to why is randomly restarts or gives me BSOD. here is the cpu-z screens.

I've got a similar issue, except I'm running an i7-860. Using Win 7 x64 and get blue screens apparently at random. They don't seem to be linked to maximum power draw or heat either, as it hasn't bluescreened on me whilst I've been playing FEAR 2 (with everything turned up) which I think is the most stressful app I've got. It tends to fall over when I'm browsing the web, or streaming video to my TV. Main bluescreens are IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL and MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, though the recent ones haven't had any actual text description, just error codes.
I'm running everything at stock timings and voltages, and I've ran memtest 86+ for several hours with no errors found. When I upgraded the BIOS to 1.3 I cleared the CMOS and loaded optimised defaults (I was still having the bluescreens before the BIOS update).
    Anyone got any ideas?

  • Programs randomly crashing after 10.4.10

Ever since I've updated to 10.4.10, I've experienced random crashes, most noticeably with Safari. I reinstalled 10.4.10 w/ the combo updater, done an archive and install, done an erase and install and still have the same problem. Mail crashes occasionally, but it is usually Safari that crashes. I can't seem to find any pattern to it. It just happens. I've tried going back to sites I was on when it crashed to duplicate the problem, but am unable to. It happens seemingly totally at random. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
I never had this problem w/ 10.4.9 . If I want to go back to .9, should I archive and install then update .9 or do an erase and install and upgrade to .9?
I've been using Macs for over 5 years and never had an update act as goofy as this one.
    Thanks,
    Dan

Data backups are not the same as bootable backups/clones of your boot volume, which is what scb was advocating.

  • Random Crashes with MSI x48c Platinum

    Hello everyone.
After crabbing some new hardware and putting it together, Im having trouble with these annoying random crashes. It does not happen often however, maybe a few times in a day. The screen turns black and the sound just loops forever. Then I have to restart it manually. Sometimes it will boot right up again, but other times I have to restart twice, because I dont even get the POST screen up, the screen just stays black.
    Motherboard: MSI x48c Platinum
    Graphic Card: Asus EAH4870
    RAM: OCZ DDR3 4 GB Platinum XTC DualChannel (PC3-12800 2x2048MB 1600MHz.)
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 1333Mhz
    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TXEU 750W
    OS: Windows Vista x64 Ultimate
I have a clean installation of Vista x64 and all the drivers are updated.
No overclocking, everything is running on default (Except I adjusted the graphic card fan, because it was hitting over 80 freaking Celsius when idling..!)
The temp for the CPU is 35-50c, and with the fan fix for my graphic card, its running on 50c. So overheating shouldnt be a problem.
Im really out of ideas here.. However, it does not say that my RAM is compedable with the motherboard in the manual, but doesnt that just mean its not tested with it? I think a new card like x48c should be able to run it just fine..
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advice.

Still having the same problem, but it seems to happen more frequently now though.
I set the following options in BIOS to:
    Clock speed: 1066 MHz
    Voltage: 1.57V
    CAS# Latency(CL): 9
    RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD): 9
    RAS# Precharge (tRP): 9
    RAS# Activate to Precharge: 24
    It was something like, 7 7 7 38..
    Is these the right settings?
When I run CPUZ again after the changes, its still saying 7 7 7 20.. Also went into the BIOS again, and the settings were set to 9 9 9 24, am I missing out on something here?
Here is a screenshot of what the menu looks like; http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/mainboards/msi-x48-platinum/timings.jpg (Not my screen)
I also had to disable STD to get those menu-options.
So I tried to flash my BIOS instead, but the problem still remains. I used BIOS version 2.4, located here: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=1392 (I used the forum tool btw, works great, thanks alot for that!)
Also tried to reset the CMOS, run default bios settings...
By the way, since I'm using DDR3 ram I had to use slot 1, and 3. Because the motherboard supports DDR2 as well.
(Sorry for bringing this old topic up, but its getting really annoying now)

  • Problems with Windows and Random Crashes

For the past two days I have been having tons of problems, since I finally got around to running the security update (2006-008). I've been having loads of random crashes, most commonly from Safari, Finder and iTunes. Safari crashes usually when I close a window or interact with certain flash things. It also fails to draw the window when I close the second-to-last tab (leaving one tab), giving me a big white square that I have to close. Otherwise, random window elements (such as bookmarks bar, address bar, etc.) will disappear at random, or will be horribly mis-sized.
Finder just quits whenever it wants, I have yet to find a common thread between crashes.
iTunes crashes usually when I play a video, but also sometimes when switching from the store to a playlist, or to the library. It also suffers occasional redraw problems similar to Safari, though not as bad. Garage Band does too.
Here's the output from the last iTunes crash, if it provides any clues:
    EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    KERNINVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xffffffff
    Thread 0 Crashed:

    8 GetNewDialog + 173
    9 0x1000 + 1686314
All of my crashes have been EXCBADACCESS (0x0001) ones.
Please help, as this is a nightmare to deal with.

That error usually comes up as a result of faulty RAM. Did you buy any chance upgrade the RAM in your iMac? If so, verify that the chip is seated properly and that it is supported for your iMac.

  • MBP randomly crashes when in clamshell with external display

    Hi Mac people.
As described in the "subject field" i have been encountering some random crashes after i startet using my MBP in clamshell with my newly pruchased 24" 16:10 NEC display .
typically it occurs after about 10-20 minutes of playing world of warcraft.
-the screen goes black, saying no signal, and the MBP doesn't react to anything else but holding down the on/off button.
i have tried using the key combination alt-cmd-eject to see if i could make the computer sleep and then turn it on by opening the lid.-getting it out of clamshell to get the built-in display active again.
    but none of that worked.
i also checked the dvi<->mini-displayport adapter for lose connections but i didn't find any
i have had my NEC display for about a month, and the problem has occured about 8 times now.
befor i started using my MBP in clamshell with an external display, i had no problems.

Lets give it a try. 1st of all post your s/n (so I can run a check on your specific model) or check with system profiler if your machine has the NVidia Geforce 8600 M GT. Or see for yourself: http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi
    IF SO:
Surely, you've heard about the generic problems with this specific video chip: sooner or later most of them will fail due to chip packaging/bonding issues. If yours has not failed before, it may be doing so now because you're driving it harder with a larger external monitor attached, thus probably running the affected videochip hotter. Very useful link: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/MacBookProvideofailure.html#novideotip , loads of other useful links on the subject therein.
To solve this, Apple has instigated an extended warranty, so do not tread on the tail of your machine's capabilities any more. Once it will not boot (which may eventually happen), it gets really hard to run diagnostics. Have it checked by at least 1, preferably more ASPs (see link), and kindly ask them to reiterate the test 2 or 3 times. Often, the problem will not show up on the 1st try.
I am reading increasing numbers of questions and complaints about this on the Flemish/Belgian Apple forum "Intermactivity", most users seem to be unaware of the problem (though this has been common knowledge for years), and moreover, most ASPs are reluctant to acknowledge it.
So if your machine is one of the affected, you will really have to stand your case. Especially in Europe!

  • Random crashes with Adobe LiveCycle form - where is temp file?

I'm using Adobe Acrobat v8 to enter data in a form I created on LiveCycle (the version that comes with Acrobat v8).  I'm running Windows XP with all of the current patches (as far as I know - our tech support is pretty good at updates).
The file randomly, and repeatedly crashes on me.  It also does this on my Vista Laptop, but since Vista randomly crashes for all sorts of reasons, who knows.  The file does not randomly crash for a co-worker, so I suspect some sort of problem with my computer that I'm having tech support look into.
My question is where are the temp files?  I have Acrobat set up to save to a temp file every minute, but this isn't helping me recover any lost data. I could type for 15 minutes in one field, and not recover any piece of it.  Any advice?

  • Random crashes in programs compiled with sunstudio 11

    Hi all,
I am porting some server stuff from Windows to Solaris and have the problem, that I have random crashes of our main server what didn't happen on Windows, Linux or HP with the same code base.
I think that there is perhaps a structural problem, what I can't find. Perhaps somebody can look over the attached info's and try to find out, if something is wrong.
Because of boost I have to use stlport4 stuff and I have also to link both thread libraries (libthread.so and libpthread.so). My concern is that there is some missmatch which causes my problems.
See somebody some dangers how I compile and link the stuff? Any help      would be appreciated.

I'm looking into the mtmalloc issue and I'll let you know what I find.
To use the LWP thread library, add the -L and -R option to each command that performs a link step. (It does no harm to put them on compilation commands, but they have no effect.)
Example of link steps are creating a shared library (-G option) or an executable program.
The important point is to use the -L and -R options on every link command, or you could wind up linking two different versions of the thread library into the program.
Most C++ programs, and the C++ Standard LIbrary in particular, depend on function inlining to allow separation of programming concerns while still getting good performance.
One classic example is a member access function:
    class T {
    int foo;
    public:
int get_foo() { return foo; } // implicit inline function
Access to private member foo is restricted. Non-member functions can read the value via function get_foo. The definition and use of member foo, and the contents of function get_foo, could change without affecting any code that uses T. You need only recompile, not modify source code that uses T objects.
The disadvantage is the cost of a function call to get at the int member. If access to foo is high bandwidth, program performance could suffer.
But in this case, foo is declared inline. The compiler replaces the call to get_foo with the body of get_foo at the point of the call. When you write x.get_foo(), the compiler generates code as if you had written x.foo.
You get the benefit of program modularity and separation of concerns without any runtime cost.
When you use d, you tell the compiler not to perform the inline substitution, and generate a function call instead. You often want to do that during debugging, so you can set breakpoints on calls to get_foo, which  you could not otherwise do. In fact, the -g option sets the d option to disable function inlining. There is seldom any reason to use +d explicitly.
For production code, you don't want to throw away the designed-in performance benefits of function inlining. Remove the +d option unless you have a specific reason for wanting it.

  • X server crashes randomly on ThinkPad X201i with GNOME2 as desktop env

    Hi folks,
I installed archlinux with gnome2 on my new X201i, which has intel graphic chip.
But the gnome2 (i.e., the xorg server) randomly crashes, quitting to command line suddenly, with all my work lost!
The sad thing is, I manually 'startx' after booting, without using gdm. So the workaround of 'moving gdm to the end of DAEMON list' doesn't work for me.
And I even cannot stably reproduce the crash: it just happen randomly, about once per day.
The DAEMONs I start at boot time are:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal network netfs crond alsa laptop-mode ntpd)
    The MODULEs are:
    MODULES=(fuse tp_smapi vboxdrv)
The command I use to startx is: (in .xinitrc)
    exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session
I hereby copy part of the information from /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

So a guy goes into his doctors office and tells his doctor "Ya gotta

    "DON'T DO THAT ANY MORE!!!"
(I promise to keep my day job...oops what job...and not go into
    comedy..)
Why don't you convert all the old 16 bit code into 32 bit code and
create one application where the various parts all know about each
other? I don't think that there's any way to coordinate an old 16 bit
LV and a new 32 bit LV application so that they don't step on each
other driverwise like they appear to be doing. I don't think that the
two LabVIEW's even know that the other exists!
Alternatively, get a second computer to run the 16 bit code on and
make the two apps communicate with
each other using TCP/IP or serial.

  • Tecra M11 - Random Crashes with Windows 7

We have a Toshiba Tecra M11 running Windows 7 which has a problem in which it randomly crashes, forcing the user to hard reboot it. When it crashes, the fans spin up, not sure if this means anything. We've tried many things to fix it.
At first we thought it may be overheating, which would explain the fan, but the laptop got through a 24 hour stress test absolutely fine with normal temperatures. The laptop also isn't necesarrily doing anything stressful when it crashes We also tried reinstalling some of the main drivers and also intalled the newest (2.60) BIOS but still the same problem.
It crashes up to 2 times a day, but can also go some days without crashing. It's a very strange problem and we'd very much appreciate a fix for it.
    Thanks
    George

I just posted this answer on another thread. However, for me, the following worked. The laptop was locking up at least once a day with no clear cause since I bought it.
I've been trying for the last few weeks to get a fix for this. However, I've removed the fingerprint reading software and disabled the fingerprint reader in device manager. This appears to have finally fixed the issue (fingers crossed, one week no crash). I'd also removed Toshiba reeltime and eco utilities but had less success. The various BIOS updates have not helped.
All the latest drivers were installed. I also rebuilt the machine and could not get a crash from it with the factory build though I didn't setup the fingerprint software. USB connections also seemed to have a bearing on stability, though everything has been fine since the fingerprint reader was crippled.
    Hope that helps.

Please help me with random crashes of Firefox 7.1. I'm not sophisticated enough to give you programming data. The ting is I'd like to continue to use this browser, but feel that I can't due to very frequent crashes...which causes loss of info and restarts w/ the report to Mozilla Firefox. By the way no results from anyone on that one. I have Win 7, an HP G-60, and communicate on FB, use You tube, Gmail, Yahoo. Not asking for much, eh! just want a fix, please.

Also, could you restart in Firefox [[Safe Mode]] and do normal browsing to your usual sites to see if you still get any crashes?

  • Random crashes with new 120gb classic

Is anyone experiencing random crashes with the new iPod classic 120gb units?
Every so often my unit just locks up and shows the Apple screen, only the screen is drawn in what looks like 4 colour mode, and badly drawn at that, requiring a hard reboot of the iPod to resume use (which sadly resets my smart playlists/playcounts by the looks of it).
This sounds like the problems that plaged the earlier 160gb models, so I changed my settings to not include album art which I've read circumvents the problem, and this seemed fine for a few days but I just had another lock up so maybe not.
    Mark

My new 120gb classic survived a 7 hour bus ride on Saturday without crashing once, however I was watching videos for most of the trip.
Over the weekend away I was using my small sound dock and again, no crashes what so ever.
After picking up my car from the workshop (the reason for the trip away) I plugged the classic into my Alpine IDA-X100 stereo (first time using the USB cable on the X100, as opposed to the older style connector) and no crashes at all during a 6 hour drive home.
And yet - after an hour of using the classic in the office with just headphones I've just had a crash.
This confuses me further - if it was firmware I'd have thought I'd have had crashes when using the sound dock, or car as well.
Have any of you who are also having crashes/skips seen this behaviour?

  • Lion Random crash with 2009 iMac 27

    Hi
Am I the only one to have some randoms crashs with Lion on an iMac 27 late 2009 (i7 + ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB, 16 GB Ram) ?
I noticed that some iMac 2011 were affected but haven't found anything about the iMacs late 2009.
I can crash very easily my iMac while playing with Starcraft II, just to give an example. This iMac used to be very very stable with Snow Leopard, the only reboots were to apply the security fixes or power outages.
    Any idea ?
I hope this is going to be fixed with 10.7.2 !!
    Thanks
    Johan

Can't offer help, but I've daily BSODs with the same model - same GPU, only difference that I've only 8 Gigs of RAM.
Mainly happens with anything video or picture related, so mostly while using safari or other browser. All the time before "up"-grading to Lion I never had one single crash...

  • Firefox crashes when idle (viewing) on mjpeg streams at seemingly random intervals.

When viewing a page with multiple embedded mjpeg streams, firefox randomly crashes. Sometimes it can sit for hours on the page, other times it will crash much sooner. It hasn't made it 24 hours ever.

I am having the exact same problem. Identical symptoms. I have tried everything suggested. Clean install, reset, running without plugins, checked virus killer, checked firewall, checked for malware and viruses, nothing. This problem only started after upgrading to Firefox version 22. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. Please look into this problem. After searching the internet quite extensively I can tell you that it doesn't appear to be a new problem. The pages will stop loading or rather they are loading but nothing actually appears, at random intervals. Sometimes it can go hours before a problem sometimes minutes or seconds. The only way to get webpages to load again is to kill firefox (including in the task manager) and restart. The program hangs in the task manager as if it has crashed.
