Random crashes from iMac 9.1

I have a terrible problem and can't seem to narrow it down.
My iMac (about 9 months old) just randomly crashes (total black out) nad has been for about 4 - 5 months. I can't isolate anything in particular that is going on when it does it, sometimes just moving the mouse causes it. I've check the console messages to see what (if anything) was happening when it crashes but nothing mysterious. The message "com.apple.AddressBook.abd) The following job tried to hijack the service "com.apple.AddressBook.abd" from this job: [0x0-0x601601].com.apple.AddressBook.abd" comes up every 10 minutes (and when it crashed about 5 min's ago was also the last message before it went) or so but I've checked this board and from I have read this is a benign message. Or so they say. I can't get rid of that either.
I'd appreciate if anyone could help give me direction on how to diagnose the problem. It is under Apple Care but I'm afraid taking it it and saying it crashes but I don't know how or what causes it or least of all when. It does seem to happen about 2 -3 times a month.
I had a UPS attached but I've unattached it for about a month now and it still crashed, I also 2 USB disk drives attached (one for Time Machine backup and another for additional storage) tried disconnecting them and still had crashes.
And finally a USB hub.
I'm lost. Wish there was something, some software or log to tell me what, why it's happening.
Any ideas or suggestions welcome.

I think I have the exact same problem here on my iMac. It's really confusing...
Did you find a solution?

    I'm kind of having the same issue. Firefox needs to fix these issues. This is getting really annoying.

  • Early 2006 Intel iMac, does not boot, randomly crashes

    Hi everyone,
    So, I bought a used 2006 Core Duo Intel White iMac off of a friend earlier last year. The iMac has been running like a champ, I installed Snow Leopard on top of Leopard and it hasn't given me any problems until much recently.
    I installed Bootcamp, secondary to the desire to play a little Team Fortress 2 and during the Bootcamp installation it actually randomly crashed. Weird, it's never actually done that, but since that time it would crash and would not power up for anywhere from half an hour to half a day. At first, it would only crash during Windows Vista, but now I found it crashing during OSX with the same problems powering up.
    During the crashes, the computer will not respond to mashing on the power button, and sometimes, I will hear the high-pitched whine of the boot and the light in the bottom right of the iMac would go on and then crash at the gray screen. At other times, it will boot right into OSX and then crash with the same problems.
    *Things I have tried:* Resetting the PRAM, resetting the PMC, deleting Windows Vista and removing the Bootcamp partition, Disk Utility on the few times the machine booted with a clean bill of health.
    Results: Resetting the PMC seems to help rebooting, but does not prevent other crashes. Neither the PRAM reset or removing Windows Vista has helped with the problem.
    *Things I will do:* Send the machine to Genius Bar and suck it up
    Impressions: I strongly believe it to be a power supply/motherboard issue. I ran RAM tests and the RAM itself seems to not return any errors. If these are in fact the repairs I need, then it's beyond what I can actually repair on the machine, so to the Apple Store it will go.
    I am however looking for any input into other people's problems like mine or any other thing I can do to test/bench the system (when it doesn't crash). I dig the machine and I thought I got a good deal, I am looking for any other insight you may provide. Also, if anyone has a good place to buy parts to test/fix Intel iMacs I am handy inside a computer, tinkered with PCs throughout my life. Thank you in advance!

    Strange,
    It’s beginning to look as though we have similar iMac characteristics. Here’s a couple of other things I did that you might try. Each of these seemed to improve the stability of my Mac.
    1. One of the differences between a normal boot and a safe boot has to do with what fonts are loaded. Since my system seemed to run fine in “Safe Mode” it was suggested to me to run Font Book and verify all fonts. I did that and it found numerous (90+) minor font problems and 1 major problem. I deleted all fonts that showed any problem at all. I didn’t expect fonts to be a significant source of problems, but after doing this step and #2 and #3 below, my Mac began to behave better
    2. Over time a lot of junk builds up on your Mac – caches, languages that are loaded with applications but not needed, logs, etc., etc. There are a lot of programs that will do clean up of these files. I really don’t know which ones are best, but I came across one called “CleanMyMac” and decided to buy and download it. When I ran it, it found a ton of stuff during its Scan which I then Removed.
    3. Reset the SMC
    4. Here’s an interesting one. I came across many comments about the importance of cleaning out the air in/out ports on your computer. I have a small compressor that I used to blow through the ports on my Mac. A not-insignificant cloud of dust came out of my Mac when I did that. Any dust sitting on components will act as insulation, retard heat dissipation, and cause those components to run hotter. After doing this, I swear, iStat began showing temps 10 deg F cooler than before.
    5. I downloaded SMCFanControl. After a little trial and error, I set the minimum speeds as follows: Optical Drive fan at 1000rpm, Hard Drive fan at 1400rpm, and CPU fan at 1400rpm. This brought temps down another 10 deg. F at least.
    I haven’t had a crash or hang of my system since.
    Here’s the main temperature readings I’m seeing now:
    CPU A: 91 deg. F (33 deg. C)
    Graphics Processor: 93 deg. F (34 deg. C)
    Hard Drive: 96 deg. F (36 deg. C)
    Memory Controller: 93 deg. F (34 deg C)

  • Random crashes iMac mid 2011

    Hello fellow iMac users.
    I’ve been experiencing random crashes/application crashes on my mid-2011 iMac for the last three months or so. I’ve taken the computer to my local Apple store twice, but the Geniuses there weren’t able to identify the problem after running their various diagnostic tools.
    In addition, I have:
    reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled all software from scratch;
    updated to Mavericks;
    removed one set of 2x 4GB RAM chips (purchased in mid 2013 from Apple online store), leaving original 2x4GB RAM;
    removed original 2x4GB RAM chips and reinserted 2x4GB RAM purchased in mid 2013 from Apple online store;
    restored all 16GB RAM;
    run iMac diagnostics, disk utility, etc.
    Following is the latest crash report. I would be most grateful if anyone could provide insight on what the problem might be related to:
    faulty software (I was running Office 2011 for Mac, Parallels, and Safari at time of latest crash)?;
    faulty RAM?;
    hard-disk;
    graphics card;
    CPU…
    Many thanks in advance for any help and advice.

    I used the shift key to boot and had it running for 4 hours and the gray progress bar never got past about 20%. That said I never got into a working safe mode.
    I did however boot from the recovery drive and did the fix permissions and fix drive options. Drive check said drive looking good. Permission check showed about 5 permission issues which it was able to fix.
    Restarting the system just takes ages and the harddrive keeps crunches away (not a clicking which would be an easy indicator for a bad hard drive). At 20GB Ram this is an odd behavior.

  • Random crashes imac 2007

    iMac 2007 (I bought it in August 2007) has a strange series of random crashes every two days and with differents tasks (Safari, Pages, IPhoto etc...). Suddenly and for no apparent reason, the screen freezes. It doesn't obey any order from the mouse or the keyboard... We have to force reset by switching off and so many times with the subsequent problems for de HD. We change the RAM to see if the problem was there and no way. Later on we have to change the HD because as a result of so many crashes the HD was nearly broken. We change the keyboard, the mouse... We delete the HD and we reinstalled from the original DVDs that came with the iMac... Then we upgrade to 10.6.8 and the same problems. We upgrade to 10.8 and the same problems... and this happen for nearly a year...
    Apart from these random and continous crashes the iMac goes smoothly when it has a day without crashing out.
    My question: does anyone know if this problem is recognize by apple as a manufacturing problem with these series of iMacs?
    does anyone know a way to solve the continuoys crashes?
    Thanks in advance for your posible answers. Sorry for my faulty english. It is not my mother tongue.
    with my best regards.
    Thanks.

    No. I have no anti-virus software of any kind.
    thanks

    I used the shift key to boot and had it running for 4 hours and the gray progress bar never got past about 20%. That said I never got into a working safe mode.
    I did however boot from the recovery drive and did the fix permissions and fix drive options. Drive check said drive looking good. Permission check showed about 5 permission issues which it was able to fix.
    Restarting the system just takes ages and the harddrive keeps crunches away (not a clicking which would be an easy indicator for a bad hard drive). At 20GB Ram this is an odd behavior.

    Please Help! My brand new imac randomly disconnects from the internet. We have a BT hub - wi-fi. I have googled this issue and see that it is relatively common and it is incredibly frustrating. sadly, I have been unable to wade through the suggestions others have had as to how to solve the problem as i have no technical knowledge and am basically baffled by the list of suggestions. Please can anyone explain why this happens and what to do? It is fairly simple to reconnect each time but it is driving me mad having to. It generally happens when the computer is asleep but sometimes in the middle of doing something. Thanks!!!!!!

    What frequency, security are you running? It would have been helpful if you specified in the first post.
    Did you create a new Location in System Preferences->Network pane, Location pull-down. Create a new custom named Location. Then after you create that new Location click on the 'Apply' button to save that new custom named Location. See if that helps.
    Lastly a lot of people have reported that WEP in lion is problmatic and it would be better to use WPA2 if you can.

  • Lion Random crash with 2009 iMac 27

    Hi
    Am I the only one to have some randoms crashs with Lion on an iMac 27 late 2009 (i7 + ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB, 16 GB Ram) ?
    I noticed that some iMac 2011 were affected but haven't found anything about the iMacs late 2009.
    I can crash very easily my iMac while playing with Starcraft II, just to give an example. This iMac used to be very very stable with Snow Leopard, the only reboots were to apply the security fixes or power outages.
    Any idea ?
    I hope this is going to be fixed with 10.7.2 !!
    Thanks
    Johan

    Can't offer help, but I've daily BSODs with the same model - same GPU, only difference that I've only 8 Gigs of RAM.
    Mainly happens with anything video or picture related, so mostly while using safari or other browser. All the time before "up"-grading to Lion I never had one single crash...

    What GPU temperature are you getting? I successfully run my GTX980 at 1500Mhz and 75c with no problems.
    I'm getting around 50-70c.
    So I've streesed test second card with no problem except they benchmarked two different amounts. First card benchmarked 1800 and second at 1200. Also notice sometimes one fan randomly stops turning. Keep testing it see if any crash but does look like the probvlem is once use them in sli.

    WD My Passport 1TB USB external drive randomly ejects from my iMac and MacBook Pro.
    The drive is approximately 4 years old.  When the drive is plugged in, I can see the data.  It appears to be working properly.  The only problem is that everyone of my Apple Machines are ejecting it.   Several years ago, this drive connected to Mac machines with no problems.   I have tried two separate USB cords.  I have updated the firmware.  I have tried it on my MacBook, two different Macbook Pro's, and my iMac.
    All give the same result of random ejection of the drive and the error message of:

    Eject "1TB Passport HD" before disconnecting or turning......
    Searching through the web, it seems this is an common/known problem.   Does anyone know the solution?
    Thanks,

    Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Problems with Windows and Random Crashes

    For the past two days I have been having tons of problems, since I finally got around to running the security update (2006-008). It also fails to draw the window when I close the second-to-last tab (leaving one tab), giving me a big white square that I have to close. Otherwise, random window elements (such as bookmarks bar, address bar, etc.) will disappear at random, or will be horribly mis-sized.
    Finder just quits whenever it wants, I have yet to find a common thread between crashes.
    iTunes crashes usually when I play a video, but also sometimes when switching from the store to a playlist, or to the library. It also suffers occasional redraw problems similar to Safari, though not as bad. Garage Band does too.
    Here's the output from the last iTunes crash, if it provides any clues:
    EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    KERNINVALIDADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xffffffff
    Thread 0 Crashed:
    0 GetPatternIdentifier + 211
    1 SetPortPat + 103
    2 BackPixPat + 42
    3 DataEngine::ApplyBrush(TTheme*, short, unsigned char) + 76
    4 SetThemeBackground + 836
    5 SetThemeWindowBackground + 292
    6 NewFeaturesDialog + 202
    7 CreateDialog(Rect const*, unsigned char const*, unsigned char, short, OpaqueWindowPtr*, unsigned char, long, char**, ColorTable**, char**, char**, unsigned long, unsigned char, AutoPositionInfo) + 175
    8 GetNewDialog + 173
    9 0x1000 + 1686314
    All of my crashes have been EXCBADACCESS (0x0001) ones.
    Please help, as this is a nightmare to deal with.

    That error usually comes up as a result of faulty RAM. Did you buy any chance upgrade the RAM in your iMac? If so, verify that the chip is seated properly and that it is supported for your iMac.

  • Kernel panic - random crashes

      Available memory is the amount of physical memory that is currently not in use by any other processes.  All available memory will be used for testing when the "All" option is selected. To increase the amount of available memory, you can restart your computer before testing. If you are familiar with the command line (CLI), you can run memtest (the core of Rember) in single-user mode. See Rember help, or http://www.memtestosx.org for more information.
    Requested amount: All MB
      The total amount of memory requested for testing by the Rember application. Not all requested memory can be allocated for testing. See information on "Available memory" for more information.
    Memory allocated for testing: 8692 MB
      This is the total amount of memory that memtest was able to allocate for testing.  See "Available memory" section for more information.
    Loops selected: 2
      Total loops selected by user for testing. All loops should complete when testing is successful. Test failure when the "Continue on Error" preference is selected will cancel tests before this number of loops has been completed. Users can also cancel testing before this number is reached.
    Loops completed: 2
      Total loops completed by memtest.  Note that the Rember is not always able to identify how many loops ran.  If there are discrepancies between this and the loops selected, the log should be examined to determine exactly how many loops were performed.
    Total execution time: All tests passed!  Execution time: 5266  seconds
      This is the total amount of time that it took to execute the selected tests. Execution time may vary from system to system, and is provided as a guide for determining how long users can expect tests to run based on the amount of memory installed on the system.
    Testing start time: 2015-05-04 19:26:45 +0000
    Testing end time: 2015-05-04 20:54:34 +0000

  • Macbook Air Random crashing

    Hi Folks
    I have been having some major issues with my Macbook Air (mid 2011, Yosemite 10.10.1, 1.6GHZ core i5, 2 GB 1333 MHz DDR3)
    It randomly crashes during use. Programs stop working and then the spinning beachball pops up for a few seconds before everything crashes and I have to power off/on
    I did a number of system resets and reinstallation's and for a while now I have had it running generally ok except a few crashes here and there when I am using it a lot. Just had a few issues tonight and had 3 crashes in quick succession and also the ? folder pop up once.
    For the first time though the system reported an error code and I have pasted it below. Has anyone seen this before or can anyone decipher what it means? I am no expert so it means very little to me. Any help would be much appreciated
    Many thanks

    Hello jonny550,
    Based on the information you have provided, it appears your MacBook Air is suffering from repeated crashes. In your post you wrote "Just had a few issues tonight and had 3 crashes in quick succession and also the ? folder pop up once," which leads me to believe your computer needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • Random crashes in down_read_trylock, since 3.18.6 kernelver =3.19.2

    Hello all,
    On 05 Apr 2015, I did a full upgrade (pacman -Syu), including a kernel update:
    [2015-04-05 19:32] [ALPM] upgraded linux (3.18.6-1 -> 3.19.2-1)
    and since then I have been getting random crashes. I suspect an obscure kernel bug crept in somewhere after 3.18.6 (that version was working fine) and before (or in) 3.19.2. I have been doing full upgrades every week or so (and also upgrading Xen from AUR), in the hope that the bug would go away, but it hasn't.
    I run a few Xen virtual machines, so there's obviously a lot of virtual memory coming and going, but I have run memtest86 successfully (one complete runthrough), so I do not suspect the memory hardware.
    Looking in the journal for log messages, I see CPU register and stack trace dumps (see end note 1). I notice (end notes 2 and 3) that the function down_read_trylock (from linux/kernel/locking/rwsem.c) is in nearly all the crashes, and it's being called from the page_lock_anon_vma_read (from linux/mm/rmap.c) function (end note 4).
    The file kernel/locking/rwsem.c has not changed between 3.18.6 and 3.19.2 (using the vanilla kernel sources from kernel.org), but mm/rmap.c has changed quite a bit. In particular, references to
    mapping->i_mmap_mutex
    have been replaced with
    mapping->i_mmap_rwsem
    For full diff, see end note 6.
    In addition, taint info (see end note 5) shows the flags G=kernel, O=oot_module, and sometimes D=died (info from linux/kernel/panic.c and linux/include/linux/kernel.h). I expect to see G and D, but not O. I'm not sure if this indicates there's been a problem while loading/unloading a module. The current value of /proc/sys/kernel/tainted (on my currently running system) is 4096, which is 1<<12, which is the O=oot_module flag, so perhaps it can be ignored since it seems it's always present.
    I'm a little out of my depth by now, having not done any kernel bug tracing or debuging before, so I guess my questions are:
    Has anyone else been having the same or similar probems?
    Might someone have some suggestions for how I should investigate further?
    (Postscript: I've read How to Ask Questions the Smart Way, but if I've forgotten to do something obvious or post some obvious info, then apologies.)
    End notes:
    Here is a complete crash dump log. In this case, snmpd died, though the process that dies is not consistent (see end note 5)

    Thanks for the quick reply. To answer your questions:
    Yes, I've been running pacman -Syu every now and again, including kernel updates. You can see the info hidden buried down in end note 5, but here's the journal log info more clearly:

    Since Jan 18th, I have seen no more messages like above. The only microcode lines I see in the journal are:
    Jan 18 16:21:15 hoom kernel: [drm] Loading CAICOS Microcode
    but I assume they're not relevant and are for the graphics card:
    [ashley@hoom ~]$ lspci | grep -i caicos
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Caicos [Radeon HD 6450/7450/8450 / R5 230 OEM]
    I have the package linux-firmware installed (version 20150511.8e18132-1) and the MD5 checksums for all the files in /usr/lib/firmware/amd-ucode/ match the checksums from the files I downloaded from http://www.amd64.org/microcode.html.
    I'll look forther into getting the microcode updated.

  • IPod touch random crashing

    I just upgraded from a 3G 40GB iPod to a brand spankin' new 16Gb iPod touch, and I'm noticing some random weirdness with it. First a few details:
    *- At this moment I have 969 songs, 1 video, and 4 photos loaded on my iPod touch, leaving 3.9GB free.*
    *- I bought the iPod last Sunday, and it came loaded with firmware 1.1.1.*
    *- This morning I updated the iPod to firmware 1.1.2 with no issues.*
    Here's what I've noticed so far:
    a) If you create a new playlist directly on the ipod itself (using the On The Go list), it sometimes randomly crashes and resets back to the home screen. I'll be sorting the music list by artist name, and it usually happens when I tap on their name, followed by the name of the album/CD. One time when this happened I noticed that the name of a song was "blinking" (best way I can describe it). The text was "blinking" left and right, followed by the ipod resetting itself back to the home screen.
    b) I've noticed that after a while, tracks that were were encoded directly from a CD with Apple Lossless Compression lose the ability to seek using the seek bar (tap once on the screen while a song is playing to display it). The pointer on the bar will move to the desired location, but the song keeps playing at it's present location. Tapping the last track/next track arrows doesn't do anything either (you'd need to tap them twice). Doing a reset by holding down the power button on the top of the player and sliding the slider fixes it for a short while. I haven't tried this yet with the 1.1.2 firmware installed, so I don't know if this particular bug has been squashed.
    c) I've had it crash once while selecting a song from the artists playlist. Hasn't happened again yet since updating to 1.1.2.
    d) I have had random crashes using the youTube feature. I haven't tried it yet with firmware 1.1.2 though, so I do not know if this bug has been fixed yet either.
    Overall I like the iPod touch. I like the features it has and it's a nice replacement to my dead 3G iPod. What I'm not liking is now unrefined the firmware seems to be. Everything I'm seeing points to a firmware problem Vs. a hardware problem.
    I would greatly appreciate it if someone from Apple's ipod dev team would look into the issue. I do not want or need a personalized reply; rather think of this posting as a bug report. I have been allowing iTunes to send crash reports, but I have no way of knowing if this exact error is being reported.

    Well, on my way home today I was using my iPod in my car (I have it directly connected to my stereo system using a Belkin Auto Kit (which, by the way works fine with the iPod Touch)), and I noticed something else.
    Initially I thought the issue with the seek bar not working was limited to songs I had ripped from CD's in my collection using ALC compression. It looks like it's also affecting songs I have downloaded from the iTunes store too.
    I tapped the rewind button (the "|<<" button), and it wouldn't rewind the song back to the beginning. So I tapped it again, and it went to the previous song. I happened to be pulling into my driveway so I stopped the car, picked up the iPod and started playing with it. Sure enough the problem came back. I tried seeking using the slider. No go. the "|<<" and ">>|" buttons weren't working right again either.
    I unplugged the iPod from the auto adapter and gave it another go. Same issue.
    That was about 2 hours ago. I just tried using the iPod a few minutes ago and it's still doing it.
    I just did a soft reset a moment ago by holding down the power button and then powering down the iPod. It's working fine again.
    In four years I think the most I ever reset my older 3G 40GB iPod was around 8 to 10 times TOPS. I'm well past that with the iPod touch, and I haven't owned it for more than a week.
    I think Safari has crashed on me once or twice, but to be honest I cut that app a lot of slack. There's a lot of badly designed web sites out there that have even crashed & locked up my Palm Treo 700WX phone to the point I needed to do a reset on it. I'm being a bit more critical over the issues I'm finding because they're part of the basic functionality of the device.
    Simply put, the issues I'm experiencing are small and annoying, but they should have been caught before release. Granted things sometimes slip through the cracks, but if you consider just how visible the issue is, it's even more surprising that it wasn't caught in testing (hopefully it was tested before release?......).
