Random crashes on the Mac Intel

I seem to be suffering quite a few random crashes on my newish Quad 3gz Intel Mac: certainly many more than on my Quad G5. There seems to be no pattern to it all, and it's both baffling and irritating. Anyone any ideas, please? Thanks.

Have you run maintenance routines yet? These are regularly scheduled for
around 2am
it's 3AM.. (i know cos I've been up then and heard the disk drive start doing its business..)
to the OP: when you say random crashes, do you mean truly random.. happening at different times when doing all sorts of different things? or are there specific things you do that always or almost always guarantee a crash?
I had some trouble with instant crashes on trying to hit bounce, or open the audio hardware prefs pane. but it was isolated to one logic song only, of course it was a bit project with a deadline, but that sure isn't surprising.
anyway, if you narrow it down to what you do that always gives you crashes people can give more pointed advice.
in my case, I think the song in question I was working on got corrupted, or possibly it was due to the combination of plug ins I had open for that song, including a demo version of DUY tape. every other song I've worked on since has not had the problem. but I can imagine that if my autoload song itself became corrupted, then every song I start from that basis would inherit the same problem. perhaps you could try trashing your autoload and creating a new one.

  • Illustrator randomly crashes in the middle of a project and sometimes doesn't open files properly?

    Hi,
So I'm using Adobe Illustrator 5.5 on a relatively new Dell PC with an uprated graphics card.
Illustrator randomly crashes on me when I'm in the middle of projects saying (Adobe Illustrator is not responding) etc and closes. I lose my work and all the effort I've just put in.
Also, sometimes it will not open a file, says it's unsupported? But then when I close Illustrator and re-open it, the same file will open perfectly fine.
Is this an illustrator bug or is there something wrong with my hardware?
    Thanks

If you want help with your problem, you're going to have to try harder than that. You're also going to have to be more polite.
"Crashing" means different things to different people. Is there an error message? Do you have to restart?

  • Random Clicking on the Mac

I have a streaming audio application written with JMF that runs on both Windows and Mac OS X. The audio sounds clean when received and played on Windows XP. However, when received and played on different Mac variants (Mac Mini, iMac, and MacBook), there is a randon clicking in the background very similar to static on the old LP records. In my investigations I found that other third-party apps written to use JMF have the same clicking sound on the Mac only. Has anyone else encountered this and have you found a workaround?
You can reproduce it easily on the Mac becuase Sun's own JMStudio creates the clicking noise. Start up JMStudio, select File > Transmit, select a continuous tone file (you'll need to create this tone file with something like Audacity), set the destination IP to anything, and set the stream properties to RTP/uLaw/8000Hz. When the GUI appears, select the 'Monitor' checkbox and you'll hear your tone with random clicking in the background.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    gerryal1 wrote:
Thanks for the response. The clicking does not occur if using JMStudio to simply play back the audio file. The clicking occurs when receiving (or monitoring) an RTP stream on the Mac.
As for your idea, I don't believe JavaSound has the capability to receive RTP streams. If you know of any RTP example apps written in JavaSound without JMF, please let me know and I'll give them a try.And if it can play sounds without the clicking sound, but it receives RTP streams with a clicking sound, it suggests that JMF isn't decoding the RTP streams correctly...either that, or the RTP stream you're listening to has clicking sounds in the audio stream. But if they are clean on Windows and dirty on Mac, it's probably a Mac issue.
Of course, JMF isn't supported on MAC at all, so there ya go ;-)
And no, JavaSound doesn't have any built-in RTP stuff.

  • My iphone 4s only works when plugged in, experiences random crashes, and the wifi is grayed out?

First post here. I'm experiencing some pretty complicated issues with my iphone 4s of several years, which began yesterday at random. I'm sorry for the length, but if someone could read through all of this and help me out, I would be so grateful.
I started experiencing some complex issues with my iphone yesterday, seemingly at random. I was taking a phone call, and all of a sudden, my phone goes dark. The battery was between 50%-80% at the time. I immediately plugged it in, and the apple logo appeared and began to power on. When it came back on however, I immediately noticed some changes. For starters, the battery leapt to 100%. The top corner of my phone where the carrier and bars should be says "searching..." (this never goes away). When I go into settings, the wifi is grayed out and says "no wifi."
That's not the worst of it though. As of last night, the number of times my phone crashes has gotten progressively worse. Now, even when I plug my iphone in to a wall charger, it stays on for maybe 1-4 minutes before it crashes completely. After this, it sometimes restarts itself. Before the shut-down, there are usually some weird bars or colors that flash across the screen (it's always different). I'm running on ios5 (I just really like the layout so much more, so I never bothered updating).
I don't think I did anything out of the ordinary to my phone. I walked in the rain for a short while when it was in my back pocket, but I've done this many times before and I don't see how that could create massive water damage. Also, it worked perfectly fine for a few hours after I got home. Quite literally, this just happened out of the blue. No warning, no signals, nothing. So far, I've tried...
    - turning it on and off (duh)
    - doing a hard reboot by holding down the middle and top buttons, several times
    - resetting the network settings
    - turning off data roaming and toggling airplane mode on and off
I even attempted the freezer trick. I didn't put the phone in the actual freezer because I was worried about condensation, but I did set it down on an icepack. This seemed to keep it alive a little bit longer before crashing, but only marginally so. My original plan was to plug my phone into my computer and download all my pictures and whatnot before attempting a complete data wipe and factory reset, but this also seems impossible. When I plug the phone into my laptop, the little apple logo comes and goes, but it simply never powers on fully. And even if it did, I doubt it would stay on long enough for me to complete a download without things crashing.
I'm totally lost here. Is my phone wrecked? I'm sensitive about my privacy, so I'm not crazy about the idea of taking my phone to the apple store and having them make some sort of copy of my data. I'm also not crazy about uploading all of my phones data to iTunes or the cloud or something like that. In addition to this, I don't know how I would salvage my in-app data. That's also something I'm worried about. I can't attempt to update my ios without wifi or the ability to plug my phone into a computer. All of this would be a lot easier if I could keep my iphone on longer than 2 minutes.
I've had this phone for years. I really don't want to just let it die at random and never even know why. I just feel like this hit me out of nowhere. Any suggestions about what I could do? I'm willing to try everything. I'm planning on calling apple, but I was thinking of asking online first.
BONUS: if anyone could answer these extra questions (you don't have to), that would be awesome! When you do a complete data wipe and restore your iphone to factory settings, where does all of your data go? Is it actually *gone* for good? I'm not just talking about photos, but also internet history, in-app data, and youtube history from the youtube app. Does it disappear completely? Or does it get stored somewhere. Also, is there anyway to downgrade a new iphone to an earlier ios without jail breaking it? I've pretty much lost hope with this phone, but if I get a new one, I just wish there was some way to keep using the old ios I'm used to.
Thanks so much to anyone who can answer these questions.

    I have tried everything
If that is the case, by definition there is nothing left you can do...
Did you try connecting to another computer?  Did this computer ever detect the phone?  Does the USB system on your computer work normally with other devices?  What is your computer OS version?  iTunes version??

  • I had a crash of the mac 10.4.11 after I restarted my comp the google toolbar vanished and i can not get it back it does not install ((( all my bookmarks are there

I had a google toolbar on my 3.6 firefox for at least one year . After my Mac crashed and I restarted everything it vanished and i can not get it back I tried to reinstall it does not work and when i go to add ons it tells me it is not available for 3.6 Firefox All my bookmarks re there (((

Yup, your question and Diane's answer helped me also. Tho' I had had problems before getting into the iTunes store I always managed to find a way. Today they had me blocked cold with the "Update to 10" advert no matter what I did. Other questioners are being told, incorrectly as it turns out, that they have to update their OS to accomodate iTunes 10 and upgrade to iTunes 10. I did the download which did not take up much more room on my crowded old hard drive and now I'm back in business.

  • Random crashing - MSI Z68A-GD80 Intel Z68

    Hi All,
I bought the following recently from Aria - Gladiator Z68 Core i7 2600K 4.60GHz 8GB Overclocked Bundle, however when purchased it the deal included the MSI Z68A-GD80 B3. Now before i start i have never had anything over clocked before and thus have no clue at how it all works, therefore apologies for my newbieness in advance!
    My rig:
    Mobo: MSI Z68A-GD80 Intel Z68
    Chip: i7-2600K Overclocked @ 4.60GHz
Cooler:Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler.
    Ram: 8GB Mushkin Ridgeback #996987 (2x4GB) DDR3 1866MHz 9-11-9-27
GPU:MSI GeForce GTX 580 Twin Frozr II
PSU: Cant remember the name but its 1200w
    SSD: Crucial 256GB RealSSD C300
    HDD: 2TB Samsung
    OS: Windows 64 bit ultimate
When it works it works excellently, but every now and again the system will just shut off. A couple of seconds will pass and it will restart itself, I don't press a thing or touch anything. It wont boot as it keeps restarting. The only thing that will work is if i keep the power button presses, boot in safe mode, shut down and restart the system.
The only thing i have done regarding the above is change the CPU speed as in it was set to run at 4.6GHz permanently so I changed it so that when its idle the speed reduces to around 1.6GHZ. Outcasst thought about doing the same with the voltage but the only options in the BIOS are to either set it to a fixed voltage or Auto. When i set it to Auto to see if that helped the computer wouldn't boot so i changed it back again immediately.
It has been formatted in the last week if that makes a difference. But it was happening before i formatted it too.
Has anyone seen this before? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I haven't contacted Aria as yet, thought i would post here first.
    Thank you in advance
    Mark

Ah, ok. Thanks for the screenshots. Helps a lot. Recommend setting Internal PLL Overvoltage from 'Auto' to 'Enable'. CPU Core Voltage, raise a step to 1.360v's. The voltage loss reading at the BIOS is telling. 1.645v set, only 1.616v is applied. This can be checked & confirmed for accuracy using a digital multi meter at the V-Check Point. For now, if we presume the 1.616v is accurate, your X.M.P. for 1866 RAM speed is 1.65v's. 1.616v is a long way from 1.65v's. With that 0.034v loss, BIOS setting would have to be raised to 1.685v range to give a true 1.65v's. I am a little reluctant to recommend that setting without a multi meter being attached to the V-Check Point. You don't really want to exceed the actual applied DRAM V. of 1.65v if at all possible.
Added: Just as an FYI, CPU V. recommended maximum is not to exceed 1.400v's.
I changed the above. Not sure if its coincidence or not but its crashed more in the last 24 hours than ever! Trying to eliminate all possibilities now.

  • Safari crashed and the mac keeps getting the pinwheel of death, especially when streaming. whats going on???

I was streaming a baseball game and safari crashed on me, i have a macbook air osx7.1. it said it sent a message to apple about the situation. been having problems with then pinwheel of death! especially when I'm streaming the pinwheel will pop up for no reason. does anyone have any idea what the problem could be??

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • How do you test the camera on the mac intel

why won't the camera work on skype or oovoo? I've tried to test it, but NOTHING works! HELP!

Go to > How to Troubleshoot iSight

  • Mountain Lion randomly crashes and reboots

Please can someone give me some guidance as this is starting to drive me crazy.
    I have a 2011 21.5" imac core i7 2.8 Ghz with 4GB DDR 3 memory AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512MB graphics. Running OS X 10.8.2
A few weeks ago I noticed that when I returned that the system had rebooted and was at the login screen and sometimes had generated a crash report.
I tried several things the last being to completly erase and re-install Mountain Lion which still hasn't cured the random reboots.
The Mac functions perfectly without fault during normal use and only has an issue occasionally after its been sleeping.
Below you will find the lastest crash report this morning at 7am and below that the previous one 29th December.
    Thank you in advance.

  • IPod Classic 120GB random crashes

    Hi,
I have a iPod Classic 120GB that for the past year has been randomly crashing in the middle of playing songs. For a long time it was once in a while but then it became daily and now I can't even listen to a complete song.
I've done several RESTORES and for the first 24hrs it seemed to fix the problem, but now it seems to be deteriorating. Any suggestions? Would it matter if the host sync computer is a PC or a Mac? Possible problem in the code of iTunes that when syncing would cause a problem? Could this be a sign that the HD is seriously deffective?
Any insight or tricks to fix the problem is appreciated.
    much thanks

My new 120gb classic survived a 7 hour bus ride on Saturday without crashing once, however I was watching videos for most of the trip.
Over the weekend away I was using my small sound dock and again, no crashes what so ever.
After picking up my car from the workshop (the reason for the trip away) I plugged the classic into my Alpine IDA-X100 stereo (first time using the USB cable on the X100, as opposed to the older style connector) and no crashes at all during a 6 hour drive home.
And yet - after an hour of using the classic in the office with just headphones I've just had a crash.
This confuses me further - if it was firmware I'd have thought I'd have had crashes when using the sound dock, or car as well.
Have any of you who are also having crashes/skips seen this behaviour?

  • Safari crashing frequently on new Intel MacBook-

My wife recently got a new Intel MacBook to replace her old G3 iBook. We used the setup/migration assistant to move her files and settings onto the new computer. Everything has been working beautifully with the exception of Safari.
Safari is crashing frequently. The crashes seem to be especially trigged by forum/discussion-board pages. I’ve read through these forums and tried all of the following with no success:
    -- Reset Safari
-- Deleted the Safari preference file.
-- Run all of the system updates.
-- Created a new user account and tried Safari from there.
-- Used Disk Utility to repair permissions.
-- Deleted the Cookies and Cache files in the User Library directory.
-- Attempted to run the 10.4.6 Combo update. (The MacBook won’t let us install it, claiming “This volume does not meet the requirements for this update.” )
-- Used the provided OSX install disks to “upgrade” re-install the system.
...and still no luck. I assume that something bad must have been carried over or introduced with the setup/migration process.
We really, really hope not to have to start everything over from scratch with a complete clean install of OS X. Perhaps someone who understands the crash reports can make some sense out of this and give us some leads on what to try next: (click on links to see several of these crash reports)

The most frequent cause of Safari crashes in the new
intel systems has been Plug-ins that are not
Universal, i.e. not written for the Intel chip. Have
a look in either your Main or User Library>Internet
Plug-in folder for the possible culprit(s).
    Thanks for the quick response!
Actually, we had already tried moving the Internet Plug-Ins plug-in folder to the desktop. (Sorry - I had forgotten to include that in my "things tried" list above.) That didn't seem to fix anything - but we'll try it again. I'll list the items in the plug-in folder in a while.

  • Sizzle Sound and Random Crashes

    Hi there
I have a Black Macbook (2gb RAM), and until recently haven't had any problems with it since I got it a month ago. In the last two days, things have changed. I've had two random crashes of the machine - no kernel panic, just a black screen needing a hard restart. Things seem to work fine after the restart. Today, I heard a sizzling sound periodically come from the speakers, as if it were trying to play a sound but had trouble. I try to replicate this by performing actions that might be making the sound (ichat signin/out, checking mail) but to no avail.
I wonder if any of the Mac sages here could point out some standard troubleshooting steps to clean things out before I call up Apple for advice. The only recent change was an update to 10.4.7.
    Thanks in advance!

Applecare and a tech have diagnosed this as a faulty logic board, which I'm now waiting to be replaced. Sadness, but at least it wasn't the software.

  • IPod touch random crashing

I just upgraded from a 3G 40GB iPod to a brand spankin' new 16Gb iPod touch, and I'm noticing some random weirdness with it. First a few details:
*- At this moment I have 969 songs, 1 video, and 4 photos loaded on my iPod touch, leaving 3.9GB free.*
*- I bought the iPod last Sunday, and it came loaded with firmware 1.1.1.*
*- This morning I updated the iPod to firmware 1.1.2 with no issues.*
Here's what I've noticed so far:
    a) If you create a new playlist directly on the ipod itself (using the On The Go list), it sometimes randomly crashes and resets back to the home screen. I'll be sorting the music list by artist name, and it usually happens when I tap on their name, followed by the name of the album/CD. One time when this happened I noticed that the name of a song was "blinking" (best way I can describe it). The text was "blinking" left and right, followed by the ipod resetting itself back to the home screen.
    b) I've noticed that after a while, tracks that were were encoded directly from a CD with Apple Lossless Compression lose the ability to seek using the seek bar (tap once on the screen while a song is playing to display it). The pointer on the bar will move to the desired location, but the song keeps playing at it's present location. Tapping the last track/next track arrows doesn't do anything either (you'd need to tap them twice). Doing a reset by holding down the power button on the top of the player and sliding the slider fixes it for a short while. I haven't tried this yet with the 1.1.2 firmware installed, so I don't know if this particular bug has been squashed.
    c) I've had it crash once while selecting a song from the artists playlist. Hasn't happened again yet since updating to 1.1.2.
    d) I have had random crashes using the youTube feature. I haven't tried it yet with firmware 1.1.2 though, so I do not know if this bug has been fixed yet either.
Overall I like the iPod touch. I like the features it has and it's a nice replacement to my dead 3G iPod. What I'm not liking is now unrefined the firmware seems to be. Everything I'm seeing points to a firmware problem Vs. a hardware problem.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone from Apple's ipod dev team would look into the issue. I do not want or need a personalized reply; rather think of this posting as a bug report. I have been allowing iTunes to send crash reports, but I have no way of knowing if this exact error is being reported.

Well, on my way home today I was using my iPod in my car (I have it directly connected to my stereo system using a Belkin Auto Kit (which, by the way works fine with the iPod Touch)), and I noticed something else.
Initially I thought the issue with the seek bar not working was limited to songs I had ripped from CD's in my collection using ALC compression. It looks like it's also affecting songs I have downloaded from the iTunes store too.
I tapped the rewind button (the "|<<" button), and it wouldn't rewind the song back to the beginning. So I tapped it again, and it went to the previous song. I happened to be pulling into my driveway so I stopped the car, picked up the iPod and started playing with it. Sure enough the problem came back. I tried seeking using the slider. No go. the "|<<" and ">>|" buttons weren't working right again either.
I unplugged the iPod from the auto adapter and gave it another go. Same issue.
That was about 2 hours ago. I just tried using the iPod a few minutes ago and it's still doing it.
I just did a soft reset a moment ago by holding down the power button and then powering down the iPod. It's working fine again.
In four years I think the most I ever reset my older 3G 40GB iPod was around 8 to 10 times TOPS. I'm well past that with the iPod touch, and I haven't owned it for more than a week.
I think Safari has crashed on me once or twice, but to be honest I cut that app a lot of slack. There's a lot of badly designed web sites out there that have even crashed & locked up my Palm Treo 700WX phone to the point I needed to do a reset on it. I'm being a bit more critical over the issues I'm finding because they're part of the basic functionality of the device.
Simply put, the issues I'm experiencing are small and annoying, but they should have been caught before release. Granted things sometimes slip through the cracks, but if you consider just how visible the issue is, it's even more surprising that it wasn't caught in testing (hopefully it was tested before release?......).
