RANDOM e-mail alarms in ical

I have a recent problem with ical sending me alarms at odd times. I received 14 e-mail alrams today alone, all for events that were last year. All of these events had one week reminder alarms scheduled back when they were pertinent, but none of them are in as recurring events, so I am receiving a "reminder" about an event that happened last year! This problem started after Leopard upgrade, but has seemingly gotten worse. I do sync with an ibook that is still running Tiger, but have checked the events on that machine too and none of them have alarms scheduled.

I am updating/following up on my previous post. I have deleted the plist file as suggested and after a few restarts the machine is still sending all of my previous/old email reminders.
Edzso - I have set up reminders for my friends' birthdays so they are in fact recurring. I can remove the reminder by changing it back to None, but that really doesn't "solve" the problem...that's working around it. I'm not attacking you personally by saying that, I'm just pointing out that this problem really still exists after upgrading to Leopard. I also don't have any Automator scripts that I use at all...but good thinking on that one!
I haven't installed the iPhone SDK kit, so I cannot speak to what another post has stated.
I have also tried to go into my iCal preferences and delete all events older than "x" days and I set that to 15 days. iCal doesn't end up purging any of the previous events...it's as if they're locked in there unless I physically go through and delete all of them manually. The time invested to fix that would be insane.
If anyone has any other thoughts it would be greatly appreciated...but the further I dig, the further I see this is something that is not independent on my machine...but it rather an issue people are having after installing Leopard.

  • Ical e-mail alarm and sending e-mails to self  will not sync with Gmail

Hello, my mac mail is not able to fetch a e-mail alarm sent from ical.
when the alarm goes off it is sent to my Gmail account and I am able
to view it in my browser but not in my Mail program on my Mac. Has
anybody else had or have this problem and is there anything to
rectify? it. I have spoken to Apple support and they seem to think it
is a Gmail issue. I am not able to fetch emails sent to myself in my
Mail program on my Mac either, I am only able to view on my browser.
All other emails are fetched properly. Perplexing!

I've had several clients tell me that they can't send from themselves - to themselves on a gmail account. They can see the messages in the gmail webmail interface, but the messages won't download to the mail program.
I suspect it's part of gmail's spam controls. It's a common spammer technique to send messages with the From: address the same as the To: address.
Another thought, hasn't gmail touted the user's ability to use the 5 or 7 GB of online storage? Maybe you use it by sending yourself an email and wouldn't want it downloaded back to your mail program?
Sorry for the lack of perfect information about gmail, I only set up an account so that I could help clients with it, not to use it for myself

  • ICalHelper re-sending ALL e-mail alarms in ALL calendars since PMU reset

    Dear iCal List,
For various reasons, I reset the PMU on my PowerBook G4 today. (I had recently removed some preferences as well, in the hopes of curing an unrelated problem.) When I restarted the Mac and logged in, iCal proceeded to re-send EVERY e-mail alarm I had ever set up to today. (The PMU reset temporarily sets the clock to Dec, 1969, which I think is the problem... iCal must see this and assume that I haven't used the computer for the last 39 years....) This amounted to several hundred e-mails being generated and sent. I was able to disconnect from my LAN and eventually delete all the outbox e-mails, but this behavior of iCal and iCalHelper is exceptionally annoying.
Does anyone know (1) exactly what triggers this behavior (ie: Resetting PRAM, SMU/PMU, removing preferences, other), (2) how to stop iCalHelper from sending once it has started this (Yes, I know how to kill the process in Terminal, but once I restart iCalHelper, I'm afraid it will simply pick up where it left off.), and (3) whom to contact at Apple to ask them to rectify this annoying behavior? There isn't an obvious way to restrict iCalHelper's e-mail behavior to, say, only sending alarms for a maximum of 10 previous days. I cannot imagine a circumstance where you would want the program to look through its entire database for unsent alarms older than a certain time frame. Apple usually doesn't engage in sloppy programming. However, this unrestricted iterative loop is uncharacteristic and should be fixed. Obj-C 2.0 makes looping easy, but that shouldn't mean it's done without careful consideration and user-selected limits.
    Thanks.

I am still trying to figure out this problem as well. My MacBook Pro's logic board was replaced, and now I get empty iCal notifications every so often, and while these empty notifications are shown, iCal Helper (the process) goes to 99% of the CPU, and starts gobbling up all the free RAM on my computer. I keep having to force-quit it, as it pops back up again after a while.
I'm looking for an answer to this as well. Is there any way to reset iCal's notification system?

  • E-mail links from iCal event - not working in Yosemite

My workflow has always depended on dragging e-mails from Mail to iCal
This generates link in ical event "Show in mail" - giving me option to find the e-mail with one click from iCal
Since Yosemite install the links go wrong!
I can generate several events from several e-mails and all links point me to the same random e-mail. I haven't yet found clear pattern in this randomness, but it seems to link to the first mail-to-iCal created after sleep/restart, but not always...
    Anybody experiencing similar bug?
Tried "mailbox" > "rebuid" with no result.
    Any more ideas?
I'm on MB Pro 2009 using POP-accounts for mail but the random-link behavior is just same when dragging mails from my icloud account.

Well it's good news i'm not alone in this - frustrating indeed!
Searching for solutions with no result so far.
I've been migrating my user library from one opsys to other since Leopard i guess, so probably i should just do a clean install one day - this MUST help
My workaround after a week of being just unable to manage my incoming information was to use Notes
Dragging emails to notes content still works, and in a way i kind of like it - u can keep a single note with several links to different emails etc. At least for now it seems like a decent substitute. Organizing notes to folders is helpful too, but i guess you can't organize folders in iOS which is really bad.
So - still hoping to move back to my iCal

  • E-mail alarms always sent late

iCal has been consistently sending me e-mail alarms to late. Generally I set an alarm to send me e-mail about upcoming events 2 or 3 days beforehand, but iCal sends me the e-mail after the event has passed! "Message" and "Message with sound" alarms execute at the correct time. I know the computer is set to the correct date/time, because it syncs to a network time server. I know my Mail.app works fine-- I can send e-mail manually w/o delay. How do I get notifications of my upcoming events when I'm away from my desk computer (other than by buying a new PDA?!?!?)

I feel your pain....this enrages me! lol
The only way to make them send on my end is to have the mail application open the day of the event and then it sends to my email box which then comes to my blackberry. defeats the purpose but maybe the two of us are missing something. I may call apple care on this one....

  • E-mail alarms

My e-mail alarm function does not work. The correct address is shown in iCal although a second discontinued address also appears. The current address only is in the Address Book and I have selected this entry as "my card".
    I am using iCal v.1.5.5
    Can anyone please advise me?

    Hi,
Try this. Close iCal and go to your user Library/Preferences and delete this file:
    com.apple.iCal.plist
    Best wishes

  • How do I do multiple alarms in ical as a default

How do you set a default alarm for iCal so it always comes upt with two bells / alrams?

    Hi BWTS,
There is no default for 2 alarms. You can set a default for 1 alarm, and then when you set up your event, you can double click on it and set up a second alarm manually.
    Cheers,

  • New to iCal:  Audible alarms in iCal are not loud enough...

I'm getting a Verizon iPhone and will then use MobileMe to keep everything synced. Until now, I've only used the calendar features in regular phones (I've never had a smartphone). I've fumbled around with iCal some on my Mac, and it clearly will be easier to program events on it, and it has many customization features.
But, the problem is: I've been testing the alarm in iCal (by having it sound on my iMac since I don't yet have an iPhone), and it seems you can only have a brief audible alarm sound (for instance, the "Glass" or "Basso" sound option with the "Message with Sound" option). I'm used to the calendars on regular cell phones, which, while they aren't as customizable as the iCal events, do at least have a loud alarm that repeats much like a cell phone ringer. Is there something I can do in iCal to make its alarm louder and repetitive?
If I can't get a loud, repetitive alarm to sound with my iCal events, then it's really not going to work for me. The alarm will be going off on my iPhone and I will never hear it.

    The plot thickens ...
I just fixed my iCal sync problem with .Mac by refreshing .Mac with the data from my iMac and then syncing it to my iBook. Well, it finally worked, but surprise surprise, a few posts from my mobile/cell T610 appeared in the iBooks iCal, although they aren't in the iMac's iCal. So it seems like the events I have created on the T610 do transfer to the iMac -- it's just that they don't display in iCal. Or rather, in the syncing computer's iCal ...
What do you make of this?

  • Turn off alarms in iCal

How do you turn off the alarms in iCal? No matter what I have scheduled that day I get an email alarm and also a regular alarm when I open my laptop.

iCal > Preferences > Advanced > Turn off all alarms
    Hope this answers your question

  • Can't set alarm in ical with email. tells me open address book but can't get anything to happen

using version 4.0 I was able to just a few days ago set an alarm in Ical using my email address, but now i can not.   I open alarm and click on email and it tells me to open address book and select my card and email.  I can open the address book and find my card and email but i don't know where to go from here..  not sure what has happened over the last couple of days for it not to work.  any idea's how to get this working again.

    Ron,
Open Address Book, find your card and make sure that you choose Card>Make This My Card.
If that is unsuccessful, delete and recreate your card, making sure to once again choose "Make This My Card."

  • How to disable alarms when iCal is off

    Hi all,
I might be missing something here, but I believe there used to be two settings to turn off alarms in 10.4 and 10.5:
    1) disable all alarms
    2) disable alarms when iCal is off
Did option 2) disappear in 10.6? I am really missing this feature.
    Thanks for your insights

I too would like to know a way around this problem. In the prior version of iCal, you could enable alarms only when iCal was running. I routinely sync three computers, sometimes hours to days apart. So unless I remember to turn alarms off prior to shutting down the machines, the alarms are not properly updated upon syncing when an idle machine is turned back on.
Hope this makes sense. Either way, it would have been better if Apple had not gotten rid of this feature in the new iCal.

  • How to turn off alarms when iCal is not running

    iCal-Version 4.0.4 (1395)
Imagine giving a lecture supported by powerpoint in front of an audience, all applications turned off except of powerpoint, and suddenly popping up the iCal alarm message "meet her (xy) in the pub". How can I turn off alarms when iCal is NOT running?
    cheers
    knatterton

Hey!  I was DJ'ing and an iCal alarm went off even though I'd selected to have alarms not go off when iCal is not running.  Now that option isn't there anymore!  Can I revert to the previous version of iCal?  I don;t see any other new features that are worth not having interruptions during DJ'ing and presentations!  I know that if I turn off all alarms, I will forget.  I'd create an alarm to remind me to turn it back on, but...  This is REALLY annoying.

  • Alarms with iCal running?

    Hello,
Is there any possible way to receive alarm notifications of an event while iCal is not running (but the computer still turned on)?
I noticed that it will still send an email alarm while iCal is not running, but I cant get a popup notification.
Anyone else ran into this issue?

As long as you have the "Turn off Alarms when iCal is not open" checkbox cleared in iCal Preferences/Advanced, you should get your notices, etc. whether iCal is open or closed.

  • Turn off alarms when Ical not running! Bring it back

It seems that the option to turn off alarms when Ical not running has been removed. The only option now is to simply turn alarms off (then you forget to turn it back on!). i am a professional speaker and when an alarm rings when I'm using Keynote it knocks keynote off the screen. That is a real pain when you are speaking to 1000 people! Anyone got any ideas. And Apple, please bring it back.

I sure hope the developers at Apple as well as the management team who can make product impacting decisions are reading this thread - do they realize that this makes the *alarm function unusable by professionals* who do presentations? I was in front of a small group doing a powerpoint tonight and the alarm went off in the middle of it - not a good thing.
So, I will choose to turn them off completely at this point - it is the only option. And I am not going to manually turn them on and off - that's a ridiculous prospect.
I can only guess at the reason for removing the earlier functionality of turning off the alarms when the application was closed, but this is absolutely a requirement if alarms are to be functional at all for those of us who do presentations.

  • Mail, Address Book, iCal, iTunes not opening

Today I came in and Parallels was totally locked up. I quit all applications and restarted the iMac. Once it was restarted I could no longer open Mail, Address Book, iCal or iTunes. All other apps work except these very important ones. Any ideas? I've ran disk utilitiy and verified and repaired all file permissions and checked the disk. Still the same problem.

    Hi Kevin
it's possible that Console may show a useful pointer to the reason, or mention a log which does...
    if not..
I would Verify/Repair the disk (not permissions) & then if no problems are found reinstall OS X (which should retain your users/settings/files, but have a backup anyway), Quick & easy with 10.6.
You could download & try the 10.6.4 combo first, if you wish - sometimes this fixes things.
