Random Files Appearing in trash

A few Days ago I discovered the following files in my trash,
¶bmÄR.lq¶
qì"t,M». .B
úÚ]H␀␀.␀␀␀
When I empty the trash the files don't go away. I tried Securely emptying the trash but i got the same result. Also According to the finder they are zero kilobytes in size and are aliases and when I try to use get info on them or drag them away from the trash they go away. But Anytime i restart my computer or drag a new file into the trash the files reappear.

  • Random files appearing in file system

I have random files appearing in my webroot.  I am not sure if it is caused by dreamweaver cs3 or something else.  I keep deleting them but they reappear.  They are named random characters without any extension.  Here is a screenshot.

Dreamweaver isn't doing it. When you open one in notepad, what do you see?

  • Files appearing in trash

Several times each day three files just appear in my Trash. They are named 1.spoke, 2.spoke and 3.spoke. Does anyone have any idea what these are and why they keep appearing in my Trash?

David, did you ever find out what was happening? I've got the same thing happening and can't find info anywhere. I first noticed it after joining and unsecured network at a Hyatt Hotel. I'm using a macbook pro, and the only clue I can find is that the files appear to have something to do with my iDisk. Do you have mobile me too?

  • BT Cloud - All files appearing in Trash

Without me doing anything, it seems that all my backed up files are now appearing in Trash as well appearing under the correct device.  Also, the app is reporting that I have 62GB in trash even though the files are freely able to view.  What is going on?

  • Mail has random messages appearing in trash

The problem I found is a serious bug that I've had for a long time. On occasion, I'd go to the trash and find random messages I'd never deleted in there. Sometimes rebuilding the trash mailbox would make it go away, sometimes it wouldn't. If it didn't, I'd simply empty the trash, thinking it was just misplaced garbage. Sometimes the message would disappear after emptying and sometimes it would stay right there, requiring two or three attempts to get rid of it. Sometimes I had to select it specifically to delete it while the generic empty trash would fail to get rid of it.
I decided recently to double check those messages and found the messages were real saved messages that were both simultaneously in the trash and in the proper mailbox and not just old mail I had gotten rid of long ago. Trying to drag the message in the trash back to its proper folder wouldn't work as it wouldn't highlight the folder, preventing me from moving the message back. Oddly enough, right-clicking and selecting move does work and the message vanishes from the trash.
The distressing fact was that I found the messages in the trash weren't random garbage after all. If I were to empty the trash, the same message would also vanish from the original mailbox!?? I'd been deleting messages I wanted to save for months, not realizing I was getting rid of the real thing. Yes, it was careless of me not to check when the problem first started cropping up.
One odd thing I noted just recently was that while the duplicate trash messages can appear from any mailbox, the last several were all dated September 18, 2008 even though they had come from different mailboxes (note all mailboxes I save messages in are IMAP folders on MobileMe). Some of the messages that appeared mysteriously in the trash were even Apple RSS messages that Apple Mail tracks by default.
Has anybody seen this and does anyone have any idea how to stop this from happening? I've rebuilt my mailboxes any number of times and it doesn't seem to fix this problem.

I'm not sure how this message appears twice, but I definitely did not hit "post message" twice. It did take about five minutes before it posted, though.

  • Random Files appearing in history

When installing Graph Pad Prism on a mac it show that picture files stored on a mac were opened at the same time when nobody opened the files. Could a bit of software like Prism open these files or could there be something else running in the background that might have opened up files without the user being aware of it?

  • Deleted files don't appear in trash

When I drag files to trash they are deleted from the folder, but don't appear in trash.  Is there some setting that has changed so the trash is emptied immediately?

Hi and welcome to  discussions.
You are probably aware that the external drive needs to be connected and showing in order to empty whatever has been deleted from it.
Deleting something via Finder should add crumpled paper to the trash icon.
However deleting from within some applications does not put the deleted file in the Desktop's trash can. iPhoto is an example of this, so using this as an example you would need to 'empty the trash' from within iPhoto or relevant application to get rid of it.

  • Old files appear again in trash even after emptied

I always keep my trash emptied, but I have noticed over the last month or so that old files, that I deleted a couple of months ago, have started showing up randomly back in my trash, even though I always "empty securely".  What is the reason for this and how do I make it so the files are emptied securely and don't keep returning?

...decide what format you will be viewing your movie. WEB, DVD, other then set sequence accordingly. If your doing DVD standard definition then go 720X480px resolution 72 and your sequence set to NTSC DV 720x480 and/or 16:9 ANAMORPHIC . When I edit photos in PHOTOSHOP I crop(with the crop tool) my images accordingly and save to a seperate folder as COPIES. when you import to FCP this makes everything a lot easier and quicker. For viewing in HD then change your sequence settings to whatever HD resolution you want and in PHOTOSHOP follow the same guidelines for cropping. I think you're using the wrong formats for FCP. Good luck.

  • "AddressBook-v22.abcddb.incompatible" files keep appearing in Trash.

NOTE: I am using an AFP mounted network home from an OS X Server. This is very important to keep in mind. If you don't have actual experience with this environment, please don't answer. Thanks!
    * AddressBook-v22.abcddb.incompatible files keep appearing in ~/.Trash
    * I have already rebuilt the database, rebooted, logged in/out.
    * I have already removed the files, purged the Address Book database, and re-synced from MobileMe.
    * The files continue to appear.
This ONLY occurs on the 10.6.x machines. It does NOT happen on 10.5.
Has anybody else seen this and been able to resolve it in a network home environment? Thanks!

    Hi,
I’m using a 10.6 Server with OD network accounts. I had the same files appear when a user was logging in on a client running 10.5 (PPC Mac) and the next time on a 10.6 client. Sometimes when this happened the user’s address book was completely empty and had to be restored from backup. The problem went away when we started to only use 10.6 clients. Of course this meant to replace all the PPC Macs with Intels...

PS: You should post such questions in the Mac OS X Server forum so you don’t get unwanted responses.

  • Found random files in trash - date/time when I wasnt home

I noticed today while looking in my trash bin, that there were pictures that were not mine or that I havent even seen before (ie Denzel Washington at a hospital, planes, emoticons, ect...) All the items are dated at times when I am either not at home or asleep, and with no one physically using my computer at all. I am very confused, and slightly scared that my computer is being hacked. Has anyone dealt with the same issue? Should I be concerned? Also my gmail account notified me of an unauthorized access from Illinois and prompted me to change my password. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

you probably haven't heard of iGhost? it's real
Open Console (in Applications/Utilities) and look for system.log under FILES, look for the the time when you claim you wasn't at home or when the files where deleted, you can paste them here for us to look into. Or, right cilck the files in the Trash and click Put Back, then search in Finder for the name of the file to see where it came from.

Suitcase has been known to cause file corruption - check with Extensis for updates.
Video card / driver bugs can cause similar issues on screen - but they don't stay with the file, and will change as you move or zoom the document.

  • Should I delete the "Recovered files" in my trash?

Occasionally, 1 or more folders will be in my trash labeled "Recovered files". The contents of these folders are random things on my computer. Currently, it is an text bullet from Pages. I checked in Pages to see if it was still in the program's bullet list. It was still there, so I'm thinking that I can delete it from my trash.
This kind of thing happens with other stuff too, and I want to know if I can always delete them from my trash.

    Hi,
Yes, you can delete those files.
*A folder called Recovered Files appears in my Trash*
One or more Recovered Files folder may appear in your Trash after restarting your computer. The recovered files are temporary files used by Mac OS X applications. Usually temporary files are deleted by an application when it no longer needs them. If an application quits unexpectedly, the temporary files may not get deleted by the application. When you restart your computer, Mac OS X moves these temporary files to the Trash.
You can retrieve useful files by dragging them out of the Trash. In most cases, however, the temporary files are not important and it is safe to empty your Trash.

i have not set up time machine either but i do back up to a site called backupblaze...

    Step 1
    Remove "MacKeeper" as follows.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
Failure to remove MacKeeper will result from neglecting any one of these points:
Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
Don't empty the Trash after dragging the application to it. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
Don't try to drag the MacKeeper icon in the Dock to the Trash.
Here are some general suggestions. If you want your computer to be usable, don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
The only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
    Step 2
Restore from the last backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • HT1526 I'm trying to delete files from the trash and an .InProgress file in Time Machine that cannot be moved to the trash. I cannot unmount the TM disk either.  If I use the chflags -R nouchg  command, I get a "Resource busy" message. Any suggestions?

I've got one or maybe two problems.  Time Machine routinely crashes and there is a file in the TM folder that is an .InProgress file at the end of successful backups. Can't delete it, even using various sudo commands in Terminal.  These come back with a "Resource busy" message.
Similarly, there is a Microsoft Office alias in my trash that will not delete, again including various delete or Terminal commands.  Also "Resource busy"
I can't reformat the TM volume since it cannot unmount and it also cannot unmount the whole disk, which contains some other backup files I'd rather keep.
    Any suggestions?
    Mike

I'm not sure I can be very helpful since I was doing a lot of things and ultimately the problems went away.  But one thing that definitely seemed to help was to shut down, restart, do something, shut down again and repeat.  So with a clean start, try to move the file to the trash.  If that works, shut down restart and look to see if it is still in the trash.  Empty the trash. Shut down if it appears to empty and then restart.  It seemed sometimes that the computer was doing what I wanted then something was overriding this and restoring.  The shutdowns immedately after I could do something but before it engaged an override operation seemed to keep this from happening.
Sorry to not have more to offer but...
