RANDOM FILES HAVE BEEN PUT IN MY TRASH, PLEASE HELP

hi,
ive noticed lots of files, some from desktop, some from other directories possibly, have been put in the trash.
no idea how.
this is scary.
stuff has exploded out of folders and been put in trash. there are no folders in trash, just the files that resided in folders.
i dont even think i can resore to original folders??
and some folders are missing from desktop, they are not even in the trash.
whats going on???????
please please help.

Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.

Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

    If you can, have the admins take a look at the ActiveSync logs. Something's definitely not right. I can't imagine what it would be on the phone, though assuming the Exchange account is set up the same on all of the devices.

    I got a shiffle for my daughter, initial problems then worked fine. Then it just wasn't recognised by the pc as an ipod - don't know what i did but it started working fine. Got my hubby a nano 4 crimbo and get wizard to install drivers/softwaree everytime w elog in. Removed programmes, like before, updated drivers - re-installed itunes and still get the *** wizard. According to what I have read drivers shouldn't need to be installed when you have latest itunes. I'm no techie (as u may gather) and have nothing exciting on my pc!!!! It is recognised as an ipod by windows then goes straight to the wizard. Like I say have had problems b4 but have had them sorted and one shuffle was for my dad whilst in intensive care so memory a bit hazy of that time. Any help (pls pls) much appreciated!!!!!

Aperture version 3.4.5. Used to be able to view the files then all of a sudden they have stop appearing. Once the aperture trash is emptied the files can be viewed in the system trash. Becomes quite annoying if you want to review the aperture trash files before deletion.

    In the most recent version I cannot get this trick to work, however. But try it anyway, maybe it is just my macthat has an issue.
    Did this happen directly after the update? Where is your library located, on an external or an internal drive? Are your originals managed or referenced?
    I'd try next to check, if this is caused by the library, by creating a small test library and trying to trash pictures there. If it works well in a new library try to repair the database and the permissions on your regular library.  See:

    Randomly doc extensions files are being renamed to doc.bhdiraa .It looks like files have been encrypted.
    Files are shared on the server and served by 100s of users (From WAN and LAN end).We did scan server with Many AVs
    and with virustotal.com
    but couldn't find any malware. we do have "not so updated" backups. Does anyone have any solution on recovering data?

    You might also try renaming the extensions to docx or zip (just in case they're docx file and not just doc files) and seeing whether you can open them with Word or Windows.
    If that doesn't work, you might need to use some commercial software like Malwarebytes (https://www.malwarebytes.org/) for recovery. There is also a free version you could try.

    Generally when you get the resource in use error logging out or rebooting will take care of it. When a file just absolutely refuses to delete try restarting in Safe Mode (hold the left shift key after the computer restarts) and then empty the trash.

    i noticed the other day that a good chunk of my songs were not playing properly. at random moments during songs a half second of another song would interrupt the current song and then skip forward one song. i thought i'd restore my ipod and reload all the songs again. now my computer is having trouble recognizing the ipod. i can only restore the ipod if the computer has been off for x amount of hours. once i restore the ipod and then try to transfer my library i get a warning that says that its having problems saving all the files to the ipod and that all files have been deleted. it will only save the first two songs of the library. if i try to play the second song the ipod freezes up. if i try to restore the ipod again the computer will not recognize it unless i turn off the computer and wait. i've tried resetting the ipod while still connected to the computer but to no avail. i've tried this numerous times. hopefully someone out there can help.

    I take it that your mum has not made a habit of making regular backups to an external disk?
    There are data recovery services that can often recover deleted files; however, their services are quite expensive. To maximize the chance of recovery, have your mum do a shut down from the Apple menu and don’t use the MacBook Pro again until you’ve chosen a data recovery service, given them your MacBook Pro, and have received it back from them.

    In addition to the other replies you have received, you can check if you have been hacked. From various sources, I’ve compiled this list of some things that can be checked:
    1. First of all check if any rogue programs or services are running. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type msconfig and press Enter. On the Startup Tab, uncheck any entries that are unknown to you. Repeat this for the Services
    Tab. If you uncheck anything restart the computer and when it restarts, put a tick in ‘Don‘t show this again‘ as you‘re effectively doing a selective start up.
    2. It’s probably not relevant these days but this only takes a few seconds to check. Open
    a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type cmd and press Enter. Now type system.ini and press Enter. If under [drivers] there is an entry
    user=user.drv, you may have been hacked, so restart the computer and check again. An entry of timer=timer.drv is safe.
    3. Now check the net statistics:
    3A. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type cmd and press Enter. Now type netstat -ano and press Enter. If ‘Established’ is in the State column, make a note of the PID and the Addresses alongside
    it, as someone may be hacking you. If the IP Address begins with 192.168, you are safe as it’s part of your home network.
    3B. To check if you are being hacked, open Task Manager by
    hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Go to the Processes Tab > View > Select Columns and put a check in the PID box so that the column is displayed.
    3C. If the PID that you noted in 3A appears and it is not a name that you recognise, right-click it and End the process. You can click the word PID at the top to sequence the numbers to make it easier to find. Restart the computer and check again.
    3D. If you didn’t find the PID, restart the computer and rerun the netstat –ano command. Open Google in a browser window and type the IP Address into the search box. If it’s a suspicious site, restart the computer and check again
    4. Lastly, run your ‘anti’ programs to clear up any residual files, which you should be doing on a regular basis anyway.

I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.
