Random freeze ups.  Must reboot each time.

Random full screen lock with no errors reported using the hardware test disc. Mouse can move on screen (arrow or beach ball) but no clicks or key presses of any kind cause a response. The clock freezes instantly as does video playback. Audio dies altogether (or starts looping) within a few seconds of freeze-up but not quite instantly like screen (except mouse cursor) does. The only way out is by holding power key for 3-4 seconds until MacBook Pro shuts off. Force quit popup box never comes with commandoptionesc. Even right now I'm holding my breath that I can post this before the next occurrence since it has become a daily event.
This just started about 30 days ago. Never had this happen in Tiger but probably unrelated. My thing is that I'm out of warranty by self-upgrading the internal hard drive awhile back. Hoping someone can help with a diagnosis. At first thought maybe it was time machine or boot camp causing the freeze ups, but I ruled them out. Although left and right fans almost always stay at 1k RPM, I'm now wondering if maybe there's a heat issue or video card (ATI) issue - but those are really just guesses. I've done a clean install and recovered only some files back from time machine. I've done a PMU reset and tried the factory ram only. Nothing seems to work, plus booting from the hardware test shows no hardware errors. Booting from leopard to run fix disk and permissions also did nothing. Keeping in mind that I've voided my warranty can anyone suggest next steps? I'm not great at understanding console messages but nothing seems to show in logs at exact time of freeze up that I can tell. For the record Software updates says I'm current including firmware stuff too. Never had an issue like this since OS 7 when multi-finder was introduced. This is making me nuts, so if you'll indulge me, here are my machine specs...

I think the fan defaults to 1,000 rpms. Only thing I've found that seems to help is keeping the fan speeds at about 3,000 rpms. No more freeze ups (except one) when I keep the fan speed up a bit.

If you are not using data and the iPhone goes to sleep, it will automatically drop the wi-fi, and will not reconnect until you wake the phone up. That is the way it is designed. The only way around that is to turn off cellular data while at home and on wi-fi.
Cannot answer the xbox question since this is an iPhone forum and I would have no idea.

  • Curve 9360 Blackberry ID, other Apps stop syncing after about 2 hrs, must reset each time

I have a new Curve 9360, downloaded google sync, voice, and maps, but not much more.  After about 2 hrs or so, all applications including Blackberry ID, google sync, voice, and maps stop updating.  When I go to Blackberry ID Account, it gives error "Unable to retrieve your Blackberry ID account information."  But after a hard or soft reset all applications work for about 2 hrs.  I have already performed a "Factory Reset" with the Blackberry Desktop Software.
It seems like it must be a global setting that gets changed after a few hours each time.
Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Also the os that's installed is the 1st os 7 released if I'm not mistaken and buggy best to update to latest os.
Once update is do not install all 3rd party applications immediatley some maybe incompatible with os 7. Install 1 at a time and test phones response for a few days.

  • Help! imac Intel duo core crashes/ model 6,1/10.4.11 must restart each time

The Imac crashes each time and I must restart it almost every hour! After restart I need to cool the machine otherwise I need to restart more then 5 times
before it starts running again. When I work with pictures there are horizontal stripes on the screen and see some delay in the finder screen. It looks like a video error.
My question is if this is a hardware problem or an OSX system problem? If I want to install Panther should this work in combination with this machine?
    Hopefully somebody can help!

If you say cooling helps then that's likely a hardware problem.  Maybe even something as simple as too many dust bunnies inside.  You'd need to ask on the iMac forum on how to clean inside.  Overheating can cause various problems, including video.  I guess it could be software, but do you hear the fans racing?  I don't know about iMacs but other models will automatically turn fans on at high speed to prevent overheating should the software controlling the fans not run.
Panther? On an Intel Mac? No way.   You did mean OSX 10.3 didn't you?  10.6 is Snow Leopard and most people with your machine want to go that direction (or even to Lion 10.7).

  • Windows 7 desktop unresponsive, must reboot several times.

I am having this issue on a number of machine in our environment where after a boot, the desktop becomes unresponsive.  I cannot open Windows Explorer, IE, control panel, nothing opens.  When I try to restart, the restart option from the Stat Menu
does not show up and I have to Shut Down.  I think the Server service is what's failing to start at boot but I can't even get in to view the running services.  The Event Log is also seeming to fail to start so there is not log of the errors taking
place.  This is very frustrating for my users who have to reboot several times before the computer will start working again.  Please help.

    Hi,
    So here we are in a domain environment? If yes, please verify if any group policy settings would casuing this problem;
Meanwhile, please boot in safe mode to see if this issue was caused by any 3rd party applications, also take a check to see if there is any conflicts between the devices and the drivers:
Start your computer in safe mode
    Hope this may help
    Best regards

  • Firefox won't let me update. It tells me I have to reboot each time to finish a earlier update. I tried three times.

When I try to update a popup screen tells me that I need to reboot to complete a previous update. I have rebooted three times and keep getting the same message.

Wow that was really quick, thank you so much.  Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it.  I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names.  isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,

  • Airport utility cannot find time capsule unless I reboot each time I need to back up. Use snow leopard

Why do I have to reboot the time capsule every time that time machine calls for a back-up?

Constant amber LED is nothing to do with network.. it actually is showing the TC is actually got a bad power supply or the disk is dead.
Power it off.. and do a full factory reset.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Then you can see if it boots beyond the solid amber.. if not let it cool right down for several hours and try again.
    What model exactly is it??

  • P67A-GD65 (B3) -I'm also getting random freeze ups

I'm getting a complete freeze up at least once a day where I then have to do a manual re-boot.
It occurs only when I'm on my desktop about to click on an internet linked shortcut.  The arrow juts freezes over the shortcut and the whole PC gets locked up.  Very frustrating.  Any ideas what would cause this?

Quote from: Mark on 02-April-11, 23:17:40
    Have you overclocked your system?
Yes, but mildly following some of the online guides.  Currently cpu is running nice at 4.5 Ghz, any higher and I get bsod.
Right now I'm running all voltages on "auto" to see if that makes any difference.
It doens't freeze up at any other time other than what I described above when I'm about to click a link on my desktop.  Just wondering if the new IE 9 has anything to do with it. ?
All temps seem to be good: around 38c at idle and 58c during heavy gaming.
It's weird because it freezes just at the moment I hover over a shortcut icon and it gets highlighted, it doesn't even get to the point where I actually click the icon.

  • Ipod Freezes must reset each time to mount

HI, 8GB nano. Recently, every time I connect my nano it does not mount in itunes and it freezes. I can unplug it, hit the reset (center and menu), and replug it in and it will mount and sync fine. Next time though, same thing will happen. Even seconds after a sync. This is new problem and I can't fix it. Any ideas? My other 1st gen ipod mounts fine. Thanks
    M

I have the same problem, also starting immediately after upgrading to itunes 8.
Oddly enough, I had the same issue before, and it turned out to be due to the fact that I was using my boyfriend's iphone USB cable (since it doesn't have the annoying little buttons you have to push in to remove it from the ipod, which require pulling out the earbuds every time I sync, talk about a design flaw!). When I switched back to the nano USB cable, everything was fine for a few months, until I stupidly decided to install itunes 8, and now it freezes every single time I plug it in. I reset the ipod (leaving it plugged in), and when it turns back on, I get a message telling me that an unknown USB device is attached to my computer. I pull the USB cable, plug it back in, and then it syncs normally. I've tried restoring the ipod and reinstalling itunes, neither worked. It is still under warranty, so I may try to get it replaced, but the nearest Apple store is hours away and I've been hoping a software update might help. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

  • HT3798 Ipod classic, 120gb randomly freezes and/or reboots. Is this hardware or software issue?

My wife told me the other day that she was having an issue with her ipod which was happening at an increasing rate. While listening to an audio book or music it will randomly stop/freeze, and times the Ipod will reboot. Of course, when listening to a 6 hour audio book and losing your place when this happens can be frustrating. It's about 4 years old and I was thinking that maybe it was the drive inside, but not sure.
    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

Confirm the Hardisk health, by doing the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2
it wont fix your problem by help in troubleshooting.
    Have a nice day!

  • 'You shut down the computer because of a problem'. Mbp constant black screen crashing, can only hard reboot each time. Please help, latest report here...

Hi for the last few months my mbp seems to randomly crashing to black screen at seemingly unrelated times. Most frequent are after periods of sleep and sometimes when web pages such as youtube load. This crashing is getting more and more frequent and when it occurs only a hard reset with the power button has any effect. The screen goes completely black, no backlight, no keys work, the fans keep going and if there was a song/video playing it starts looping the last note/second of noise over and over until the laptop is reset. My worry is that if i take it to the apple store, it will decide not to crash on that day which would drive me insane as its been happening all the time.

Any information on why this is happening would be so so so appreciated as losing all your work in a blink of an eye is unbelievably rage inducing.
    Thank you!

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.
You may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

  • IBook needs rebooting each time to show up in Network.

If the iMac is awake before the iBook starts up, I can find it in the network list when I need to, connect, then transfer files etc. But if the iBook is already on when I start up the iMac or just wake it up, it doesn't see it. The only solution is to reboot the ibook which then immediately shows up in the list. Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

    Hello Simon,
browsing networked macs can be an issue. This could be a fault with the type of network your on.
The long term solution is to connect to the servers using the finder keystroke 'command +k' and use the bonjour name or IP address of the server.
You can then add that server to your favourites.

  • Virtual box random freeze or segfault/reboot

I have tried everything to fix it including 3 fresh installs and various configs. I am running windows xp as a guest. I tried installing another guest and the same issue happens. Anyone experience this? They happen randomly while the guest is running.

Here is a link to the bug tracker entry I opened.  https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/21736 I put it against the kernel because I am running Virtualbox-bin from AUR, and because it seemed to be caused by the kernel upgrade.  It really is not an Arch problem and is being worked upstream.  I wrote the report hoping that it would be considered when the devs made the decision the new kernel was stable enough to mainstream.  Oh well...
For now, I am ignoring the 2.6.36 Kernel

  • Upgraded to 10.5. Must reboot every time when I want to connect camcorder

Sorry if I am in a wrong place with this question.
I used to have video chats when my Canon XM2 camcorder was connected instead of a webcam, it produced a very flattering picture of myself (I need it more and more). After I upgraded to Leopard a couple of days ago I have lost the ability to connect the camera without restarting the computer. It's like back to my 20th century PC again, only we did not have digital camcorders back then.
I know there is a bit of misunderstanding between Canon and Mac OS when it comes to using FireWire protocol, but in my case I am afraid it is something different. System Profiler sees the camera, iChat also reports it as connected but instead of the picture there is a black rectangle in the iChat window; the same behavior has been registered with Skype. After I restart the computer (with the camcorder ON) everything works as expected.
Can someone please advise if there is a setting in Leopard that tells the computer to recognize the signal from my camcorder without rebooting? Thank you.

After 20 minutes of full disconnect from power - I even unplugged the computer - it recognizes the camcorder every I power the camcorder off and then on again. Not sure how long this memory will stay but so far so good. Probably hot-plugging the video camera via FireWire was not such a great idea after all. I think I will be safer if I connect FW devices to the computer when both the device and the computer are powered off.
    Thank you Defcom (UK).

  • ITunes Crashes the second it starts up, have to do a hard reboot each time.

This isn't a spinny wheel of doom question. The instant iTunes is started, it will completely crash the system and bring down the screen that says "Hold down the power button to restart your computer". This has happened four times now, and I even deleted the preferences in the library, and tried the same thing on another account. I copied what was in the error report below. Please, please help! I have an iPhone, and it's quite disconcerting if I can't sync it to my computer because iTunes is being stupid. Thank you!

However, when I tried to open Time Machine, I once again got a frozen computer.
    Hi, again.
From your description, that should have worked, since you've narrowed the problem down to that particular account. I don't recall anyone posting that it didn't work when it was the only account not working.
Try doing that again, but first close all Finder windows except the one you're using to delete the file. As soon as you delete it, click the Apple icon at the left of your menubar, choose +Force Quit,+ select Finder, then click the Relaunch button.
If that doesn't fix it, do the same again, except this time select Restart from the Apple menu.
I can access Time Machine through the other account, and it looks like all of the backups are there and complete, but I cannot seem to restore from them because the account from which I am accessing it is not the original account.
Yes, that's correct -- it would be a rather large security problem if one user could access a different user's files in Time Machine, when they can't normally.
