It could also be the PSU, not supplying enough power and causing the system to trigger some failsafe measure -- like going straight to the BIOS for you to check temperatures or fan RPMs. Speaking of temperatures, it is summer, you know... It's not that surprising. Especially if it's in a poorly ventilated case.
I'm not really sure how to boot into the lts.
It's not as complicated as it sounds. For GRUB Legacy and Syslinux you only need to duplicate the existing entry except with "vmlinuz-linux-lts" and "initramfs-linux-lts.img". And for GRUB 2 you simply re-generate the config file with "sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg".

  • Random hard freezing issues, Windows 8 64-bit on Macbook Pro (Late 2008)

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to OS X 10.8.3 and got a hold on copy of Windows 8 64-bit. As I'm running on my old trustworthy 15 inch Macbook Pro (Late 2008), my hardware is officially unsupported. Over the years I've had XP, Vista, Win7 32-bit and 64-bit running running on the same machine, and thought I'd give Win8 a chance.
To be able to install Win8 on my unsupported hardware, I tricked the Bootcamp assistant that I was going to install Win7, and after the reboot and start of the Win7 installation, I exited the installer, rebooted, switched DVD to Win8 and did the installation from there. So far so good. For installing the Bootcamp drivers, I followed the instructions in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4894920?tstart=90.
Now, the machine runs just fine with Windows 8, and I've installed some basic third party applications (Firefox, Spotify, Steam). However, I get completely random hard freezes on the machine (sound looping, no other activity whatsoever) during normal use. These can occur 20 minutes after start, or 3-4 hours in. The freezing behavior is very much similar to how my model can behave under overheating conditions (which mostly have occured in past Windows versions while gaming), however overheating doesn't seem to be the issue here (based on simple palpation ).
Have anyone experienced a similar problem, or know something about it? My current idea is that some weird things are going on with the Bootcamp drivers, so unless anyone comes up with a suggestion I might try doing a rollback to the point before I installed the drivers to see what I can make of it.
    Thanks!

Had a few similar short system freezes, after installing Windows 8 x64 on 13” MacBook Pro Mid-2010 with BootCamp 5.0.5033.
There is a suggestion that DisableDynamicTick may fix the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/message/21565295#21565295. There were similar topics at Microsoft forums: 1, 2, 3. It was said “that this will likely reduce system battery life, so it should be undone when you update your Windows build or if it doesn't resolve your issue”, and that “this problem is resolved in the release versions of Windows 8”.
Another possibility is that there is indeed a buggy driver, within BootCamp 5.0.5033, or a 3rd party, like a wireless network driver in the following case http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-performance/system-fr eeze-randomly-after-installing-windows-8/49488183-26cf-4389-af21-a85dc366c99a?pa ge=2#LastReply.
The problem has been noticeable on my MacBook, but not annoying enough yet to spend time troubleshooting. If you find a robust solution, using the links above or other method, it would be interesting to know.

  • Random hard freezes with 10.9.1

I am experiencing random "Hard" (spinning ball, inability to force quit) freezes with my new 27" iMac.  I bought the new machine in December and migrated the hard disk contents from my 3 year old 27" iMac.  Over the last month the freeezes have occured at least once every week, but twice yesterday.  In one instance the only application in use was Apple Mail.  So far today it's been behaving.  Both Thunderbolt and USB hard drives were both mounted in every instance.
    Any suggestions?

Lex,  Here are the results of my Etrecheck run today.  I note that the producer says it prouces the best results if the computer has been running for some time and I've just rebooted from a hard freeze.  I don't know what this means.  I also don't know how to dig any actionabable information out of what follows.  Can you help?

  • OS 10.8.5 screens go black, audio stops, must hard reboot

So I have been having a really annoying problem the last few months. I'm running OS 10.8.5. My issue: screens go black, audio stops, must hard reboot...it happens at various times, but never while sitting at my machine, UNLESS viewing video in fullscreen as noted below.
Today while watching VLC fullscreen it repeated this behavior three times in a row within 90 minutes.
While watching in fullscreen and rendering in FCP - the video stops playing followed by the audio a few seconds later.
I thought I had fixed the problem sometime ago by turning off my screen saver, but apparently that was not the solution.
    My specs:
    Model Name:     Mac Pro
      Model Identifier:     MacPro3,1
    Boot ROM Version:     MP31.006C.B05
      SMC Version (system):     1.25f4
    DEVICES (from system profiler):
    After Effects 11.0.2
    Premiere Pro 6.0
    ProcasterAudioredirector
    Blackmagic Audio
    Blackmagic Audio
    ATI Radeon HD 3870 x2
    Blackmagic Intensity Pro
    2 RAID controllers
I have been watching my console log and captured all messages between reboots.
The messages I think are resposible are as follows, they always appear in the console just before hard reboots are required to get the system back up:
coreaudiod[338]: Enabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is inactive
coreaudiod[338]: Disabled automatic stack shots because audio IO is active
    1PasswordAgent[493]: [HYBI] socketDidDisconnect: Error Domain=GCDAsyncSocketErrorDomain Code=7 "Socket closed by remote peer" UserInfo=0x1035168c0 {NSLocalizedDescription=Socket closed by remote peer}
I am thinking it has to do with a conflict between the Blackmagic audio and system audio...but I am not sure.
I am hoping someone here can help me troubleshoot. Here are the console messages between reboots (this log is for a single reboot):

I'm going to reply to my own message. After spending some time trying to solve this problem, I found an application called Chapter Maker in the App Store. It is reasonably priced and once you have turned your podcast sent to iTunes into a movie by opening it in QuickTime, you can either just show it through QuickTime on your desktop or laptop computer, or if you want it to work in iTunes the way it used to work, you can send it from QuickTime to iMove (go to file/Export to... iMovie) where you can then export it as a movie to your desktop and open in Chapter Maker where you can add the chapter headings back in to the podcast and Export it. You can then add it back into the movie folder in iTunes where you can see the visuals in full screen and navigate through the chapters quickly.
I also tried this out by connecting my iPad to my computer and moving the movie into my iPad. While it doesn't have the chapters visible to navigate quickly to a chapter heading, you can touch the play screen and drag it to the places you need to review. Not as nice as the old iOS version, but it also does show the visual screen using the full screen of the iPad.
As I mentioned earlier, on my older iPod, I am able to view the visuals in full screen and by touching the list at the top right, it turns over to navigate through chapters with clearly labeled headings.
I use this to study topics for myself and also to pass on information to students.
I do wish they had kept the old version the way it was, but guess that's the way things go.
Check out the application in the App Store called Chapter Maker if you are looking for the same solution to this problem. Even if you aren't, it's an easy way to add sections to any video.

My phone 5s 16gb gold did the new update and will not come back on. I already tried hard reboot still won't work. Been over a hour now. Please someone help I need my phone.   This phone is not even 6 months old been in case no scratches. This is driving me crazy.

Connect your phone to a computer and restore your software using iTunes.

  • My ipad won't charge and I can't do a hard reboot

My iPad died while while I was using it. I tried charging it overnight but it wouldn't charge at all. I tried doing a hard reboot but that didn't work either. The screen just goes between the apple logo or the battery with two red lines on it. What can I do?

    Hello, pjcad48.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you are experiencing an issue with charging your iPad.  Here is an article that I would recommend going through for this.  If these troubleshooting steps do not resolve the issue then see the section labeled Get more help.

  • Why does my iPhone 5 take very grainy flash photographs in the dark will a hard reboot be safe to do to try to fix or is it a hardware issue?

Why does my iPhone 5 take very grainy flash photographs in the dark will a hard reboot be safe to do to try to fix or is it a hardware issue?
And By hard boot I mean holding the home and power button down at the same time for 10 seconds or whatever
I see other people have these grainy flash photographs if you try to take a picture in darkness the picture comes out very dark and grainy I thought the software would ultimately fix this but it's been going on for over a year I usually take my photographs in daylight but I need this to be fixed
If it is a hardware issue I hope Apple will replace my iPhone 5 because I was just waiting for one of the iOS updates to fix it I bought my phone in November 2012 its the iPhone 5
Please help or advise if you can was this just a software or hardware issue I know Apple was aware of it but I was advised that iOS update would fix it but obviously not
Is it safe to do a hard boot on my iPhone five by holding the power and home button at the same time for 10 or 20 seconds I saw someone said that fixed there's at least temporarily
I'm typing this on my iPhone five right now why do the words go off to the left and right no matter if I hold the phone vertical or horizontal the words bleed off to left right so for me to proofread it I have to move my text left to right to proof read it
    Thank you

The flash on a smartphone camera is tiny. It only lights up a very small area right in front of the camera. It won't light up the whole scene.
Have you seen the size of the flash on a professional camera? Even they can't light a whole scene in the dark.
Fact is, a smartphone camera is not capable of taking good photos in the dark, even with the flash.
You'll need to buy and learn how to use a professional, dedicated SLR camera to be able to take good photos in the dark. It is not easy.

  • My iPhone 4 will not charge, have used different chargers, cables, and docks, also a hard reboot is not working, what do I do now?

Ok so I woke up this morning and found that my iPhone 4 was 2% and about to die even though I had left it on the charger over night. Also, you may want to know that the charging icon does appear over the battery, it just won't actually charge.  So I plugged it into my husbands charger which is an apple charger plugged into the wall. This had the same result. So we have some docking stations that simultaneously charge while they play your ipod, 3 different docking stations ended in the exact same result, a icon but no charge.
Next my husband did a hard reboot by holding down both the top button and the home button until the system turned off and rebooted. We tried charging after this will the exact same result. My phone has now died. Can someone please give me some idea of what to do next, just saying take it to the apple or AT&T store seems like the obvious answer, but are our options really so limited?
Also note that we have checked the bottom of the phone on the charging port and it is clean and to the eye unbroken.

yes, your option is as limited as getting it into the hands of an apple store employee (or if you have to ship it.. if there is not a store close by)
My wife's old 3G had this problem, it is a battery issue.  They replaced my wife's iphone within a day, but I'm not confident any amount of user troubleshooting will fix your problem

  • My 16 GB iPhone 5 is stuck on a black screen. A white screen with the apple logo flashes occasionally. iTunes won't recognize the phone, and hard reboot failed. Can anyone help?

I just bought a gently used 16 GB iPhone 5. I set the phone up earlier today with no issues at all, installing backup data from my iPhone 4, syncing the new phone to my iCould, setting up my new SIM card, etc.
The phone was working fine (I was able to send and receive texts, use WiFi, manage apps, etc.) for the first hour or so. Then, without warning, it shut down. The screen is solid black, but every now and then it flashes white with the black apple logo.
I tried multiple hard reboots — all failed.
iTunes (on my MacBook Air, running Yosemite) is now unable to recognize the device, although it recognized it without issue earlier today.
I live overseas, so going to an Apple store is a bit inconvenient. If I can trouble shoot this at home (and in English), it would be really helpful.
Thank you in advance if you have any helpful tips or suggestions!
    Best,
    MilliGFunk

DO NOT STICK A PAPER CLIP IN THE HOLE!
There are two holes.  One is a small one that has a microphone behind it.  A paper clip would probably ruin the microphone.  The other is a 1/8 inch hole where you plug in a headset.  A paper clip might short-circuit something.
First connect the iPad to its wall charger for at least half an hour to be sure it has enough juice to get started.
Then if the iPad does not wake up when either the Home or Sleep button is pressed, press and hold the Sleep button for several seconds and see if the Apple logo appears.  If it does, then your iPad has been turned off instead of merely being put to sleep.
Beyond that, look for an iPad repair center.  The Apple Authorized Repair Centers may be more expensive.  If you want to try them, look at <Apple Authorized Repair Centers>.  There may be one in your city.

  • What do I do if my MBP doesn't recognize my HDD after a hard reboot?

I have a MBP 13'' Mid 2010 2.4GHz 4GB. I work on Lion, with BootCamp and Parallels installed.
Two weeks ago, I used Parallels to open up Windows for the first time since months. I think, maybe for the first time since i migrated with TimeMachine from a Backup. Windows worked fine. In the end of my session, I put it to hibernate by just closing it. Later this day, I opened it again and the monitor froze. I made a hard reboot which resulted in the folder with the question mark. I thought "crashed hdd". I exchanged the hdd for a new one and started up SL Install from the DVD. SL Installer (more exactly: the Disk Utility) does not even recognize it as a HDD! I put a third HDD as external USB which was recognized and I installed SL there. Later, I even put my "crashed hdd" in an other case => works also, I can boot from it! But still as I write to you know, I work from a boot off an external hdd and the disk utility in SL does not recognize the internal hdd. The SuperDrive works fine. Apple Hardware Test did not give any results. PRAM-Reset was done. The laptop even still is stable under stress, calculation, gaming and everything.
Yesterday I used Windows again, now from the USB-Drive. It worked fine and I turned it off in the evening. Today, when I tried to boot from the HDD => Folder with question mark! Now it's working again as I'm home, and I'm not sure if this is because of 1) Luck 2) a PRAM-Reset 3) pushing Alt during the boot. I have to say: In this two weeks I didn't need to push Alt during boot for the Mac to recognize and boot from my USB-Hdd.
I'm afraid that my LogicBoard is slowly dying... can somebody explain me what happened?
Is it possible that BootCamp destroyed something of the hardware? Moreover, what more can I do to "reset" my MacBook to its original state, additionally to putting a new HDD in it? I think and hope that no hardware is damaged, so a total reset of all possible properties could probably help me. Will I have to flash the EFI? Is that even possible?
Thank you all very much for your help!
    Greetings
    Tobi
PS: At the moment I think of my laptop as of a patient having a heart transplant on a cardiopulmonary bypass: Everything works fine, but many important part happen outside of the real body!

    Hello, Grandma Mo.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would first make sure all updates have been processed for the computer and iTunes.  You may need to place the device in recovery mode before iTunes will recognize the device.  Here is the article that explains that process.
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
If the device is still not recognized by iTunes, see the steps in the two articles below.

  • Mac Pro 2009 Raid Set Lost after Hard Reboot

We have a newer Nehalem based Mac Pro with a 2009 Black Apple Hardware Raid card.  The Hard Drive Configuration is: 4 x 2TB Western Digital drives setup as a Raid 1+0 array providing 4TB of space with what we believed to be optimal performance and redundancy.  We had two volumes / partitions configured on the array, one 120GB for the OS and the remaining 3.8TB for data.
Everything was working fine when the server froze up.  ON the Screen an error message said there is a problem with your Raid controller, Please open Apple Raid Utility.. Unfortunatly when we tried to do that we just got a spining beachball. We tried to open finder and it beachballed.  We tried to force quit and nothing working. Finally we were left with no choice but to do a hard restart of the server and turn the machine off and then back on.
When the server came back on it would not boot up.  We were greeting with the Folder with a Queston Mark.  We booted from the Mac 10.6 Snow leopard Server Disk and opened up Apples Raid utility software.  Much to our shock the Raid Set and the two Volumes were not shown in the Utility.  However all 4 of the drives were listed and all being shown as Green light good status, but listed as "Roaming".  We weren't sure what to do, the volumes weren't accesible since they didn't exist, the Raid set wasn't there, there was no way to run something like Data Rescue Recovery software.  We tried calling Apple and have to wait until they open this morning.  After looking online at various forums we came accross this problem with no solutions.  Most of the people with the problems had the older 2006 Blue Raid card, and this appeared to be a common issue amoung others with the older card.  I decided to try and re-create the Raid 1+0 set.  However as soon as I did that I was prompted by Raid Utility that the drives I was selecting to use for the Raid set were already a part of another raid set and using them would delete the data on the set.  I obviously canceled the process. Crazy enough the system knows the drives belong to a Raid set but doesn't realize it should know what the raid set information is.
We were using Mac OS 10.6.7 Snow Leopard Server, and I even tried installing and updating an external drive with 10.6.7 Server and booted from the drive from the machine and try to run Raid Utility.  That did not work either.  Any advice from anyone would be awesome.  I'm worried what Apple is going to say when I do get a hold of them, the system is under Apple Care warranty.  Thanks in advance for anyone's time.

I haven't lost data, but in my 2010 Mac Pro with 2009-vintage Apple RAID card, it has this Really Annoying Habit of constantly losing Disk 3 (the spare) in my 4x2 TB internal RAID5 array whenever I have to do a hard reboot.
I keep having to re-mark the now-"Roaming" drive as a Spare and then wait 8+ hours for it to rebuild the array ... grrr.
I saw an Apple KB article that suggests removing the Roaming disk and re-inserting it.  Duh.  Fat lot of good that did.  Really wish there was some answer to this issue ... hard reboots should NOT cause array disks to go from "Assigned"/good to "Roaming"!

  • Hard drive spins down and have to do a hard reboot

I have an Intel iMac 3.06 (April 2008). Ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard especially when I am using itunes (9.02) (downloading) the hard drive spins down for no reason at all.The energy settings are fine. The only option I have is to hold the power button down for 5 sec and reboot when it happens. I know this has been an issue with other intel iMacs but when the "fix" for other machines was available it said my machine did not need it. I beg to differ. This is getting very annoying as I am sure it is not doing the hard drive any good having to hard reboot all the time.
I have tried the power management reset which has not resolved the problem.

    Hi David
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    1. In the Energy Saver preference try setting Computer sleep: to "Never" and make sure the the box "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is unchecked.
    2. Try resetting the System Management Controller as described in the article below.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
Now then if you are still having a problem you might also:
    1. Use the Restore Default button on the Energy Saver preference panel and then reselect your sleep settings.
    or
    2. Go to: Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration and trash the "com.apple.PowerManagement.plist" which also restore's the Energy Saver preference to default, then go back to the Energy Saver preference and reselect your sleep settings.
