Random internet loss is becoming more frequent but...

Hi all, had infinity for about a year now, had the odd loss of connection where everything in the house losses connection, iphones iPads nexus laptops pc's wired and wireless. But all three blue lights are on an the hub and devices are showing as connected via wireless.
Only way to get it back is kill the power and wait 15 mins.
Now its 2-3 times as day, out if the blue everything losses internet.
Any thoughts?

No. If you had not changed anything on the Homehub from when it was first installed everything should have reconnected without any intervention by you. - the equipment is the same now as the day it was installed.
The white Openreach modem should not have needed to be restarted, why did you do that? - as i said the hub was reset via the reset button (20 seconds +), it caused everything in the house to disconnect for over 30 mins, most would not reconnect at all, you say i should not need to do that but then i should not have needed to forget the network and re-enter my network key either?
Did you hold the pin in for 20 seconds? - yes
Is everything working now? - at the moment yes, but the wireless pc and ipad have lost internet connection but not wireless connection once in the last hour.

  • Wired USB mouse freezing intermittently, becoming more frequent

I have an old Mac running Snow Leopard.  I have been having an intermittent problem with the USB wired mouse freezing.  However, the frequency of occurance is increasing to the point where it has moved beyond occasional annoyance to multiple times a day problem.  The keyboard still works but it requires a Crash reboot into safe mode to get the mouse working again.  Changing to a different brand mouse doesn't help.  Repairing disk permissions doesn't help.  Turning off the energy savers doesn't help.  Doesn't seem to matter whether bootcamp is running or not.  Doesn't seem to matter whether VMWare is running or not.  Occurs with more frequency when camera is hooked up to the USB, but only increases the occurance rate.  It still freezes when the camera isn't hooked up.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Kernel shutdown becoming more frequent (MBP, Yosemite)

Hi, I am currently running a Mid-2012 MBP with version 10.10.2 (14C109) of Yosemite.
Since mid-2014 the laptop has been 'shutting down due to a problem', it was a regular occurrence at first but became less frequent.
I searched through the discussions and several blogs finding different methods to try combat this issue.
    I have tried
    -Reseting NVRAM/PRAM
    -Uninstalling suspected apps
    -Cleaning caches
    -Verifying disks etc.
I thought the basis of the fault was mdworker (spotlight) from the CPU readings in the Activity Monitor but then Google Chrome helper and other apps started using up higher CPU (I believe google chrome helper is a different problem anyway)
Eventually I gave up trying to fix it because I had planned on replacing the HDD with a new Crucial M550 SSD. I swapped these out at Christmas and placed the HDD in place of the optical drive. Everything booted fine and the mac was back to normal and a lot faster. Three weeks in a kernel panic occurred again and I have been trying to get to the root of it since. Then early last week the whole system crashed and I had to start fresh. I reinstalled the OS with a version on the SSD and the HDD as backup. I re-installed the apps I need (After Effects & Premiere Pro) and got back to work. This morning it has crashed consistently everytime I start using Premiere Pro, even with no other apps open. I dont know if I need Trim with the SSD, if its spotlight thats causing it, maybe an unnecessary app.I really need help with this because I have to meet deadlines. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I have logged all reports to apple but here is the latest one from today.

That is a problem with the [[Flash]] plugin.

  • "Your iMac was restarted because of a problem" occurring more frequently now...

Unsure whether it has anything to do with upgrading to OS X Mavericks, but my iMac has been crashing a lot more frequently these days.  I'm not talking about 4 -5 crashes a day, but at times, 3 - 4 occurrences a week.  First I didn't think much of it.  But since the crashing has become more frequent now, I have have just decided to copy the most recent crash report, which occurred  about half an hour ago and is as follows:

My iMac is the early 2009 model.  Would appreciate some help with deciphering this piece of info, or perhaps, guide me as to where I should be looking for info.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
So I uninstalled the programs I'm familiar with, from the list that thomas_r provided, namely:
         Wondershare
         Boom
         AirPhone speakers
I haven't experienced any crashing until earlier today.  Crash report as follows:

However, I still see the kexts for  Boom and AirPhoneSpeakers.  I also want to add that both Boom and AirPhoneSpeakers didn't have an uninstaller available.  Wondershare did.  Instead, I used AppZapper to uninstall these apps.    Is that the reason why I still see the kexts for these programs?
Apps for the following kexts are not available in my computer:
         com.hzsystems.terminus.driver
         net.telestream.driver.TelestreamAudio
         com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower
Is there any way to rid of these kexts other than uninstalling?  What about for apps without it's own uninstaller?
    Please advise.  Thank you.

  • Increasing TLA size causes more frequent YC gc

    hi,
i'm running the latest JRockit with 4GB heap size, 500MB nursery and TLA of 8MB gencon strategy.
What I've noticed is that although garbage collection (young collection) pauses became shorter, their frquency increased siginificantly (almost every second). Previously while running default JRockit settings my pause times were ~200ms every 5s. I assumed that increasing TLA should at least make YC not so frequent.
How should I use TLA sizing from practical point of view (i've read documentation x-times) What would be reasonable YC frequency and pause times? Is there any document where I could find achievable by JRockit pause times and YC, OC frequency? I understand that this will depend on a type of application, allocated objects etc.. but still I'd appreciate any hints. By the way most of my allocated objects are of the same size.

It is quite difficult to give any exact numbers on what reasonable YC frequencies or pause times are. As you say, it depends a lot on what the application is doing. However, it is of course possible to try to tune JRockit to behave more closely to the behavior that you would like.
From what you write I am not sure what type of behavior you would like. Are you looking for short pause times because your application suffers when there are long pauses, or are you looking for less GC-time to get more throughput (more execution time)? The difference is that you can either get more frequent but shorter pauses or less frequent but longer pauses.
    A short background on TLA-sizing:
A TLA is a chunk of memory where a thread can do fast object allocation. Only objects that are small enough to fit in the TLA can be allocated there. This means that increasing the TLA size allows you to allocate larger objects in the TLAs. On the other hand, if you are using a nursery, all TLAs come from the nursery. This means that you can get fewer TLAs from the same sized nursery if you use a larger TLA size. Also, threads that don't allocate much get the same TLAs as other threads, which potentially wastes memory if they can not fill the TLAs.
In your case you get 500/8 = 62 TLAs from your nursery as opposed to 500/0.256 = 1953 TLAs if you would have used the default value (256k) for TLA size.
So, a large TLA size may mean that you can allocate larger object in TLAs (and thus in the nursery as opposed to in old space) but it may also increase the YC frequency.
You mention that all of you objects are about the same size. What size is that? I think it would be wise to make sure that the TLA size is large enough to fit those object in, but the TLA size should not be too large.
My feeling is that 8 MB is quite a large size for TLAs. There is a way to specify a range for the TLA size. You can set a minimum value and a preferred size. This allows for more dynamic (and hopefully more efficient) TLA sizing.
    -XXtlaZize:min=2k,preferred=256k
I would suggest setting the min value to make sure that your objects fit in TLAs and then experiment with the preferred size a bit.

Aperture 3 keeps crashing on me, consistently. More frequently after using Burn tool or skin smoothing - and even more often when I feather. What can I do? I already upgraded my RAM. I'm at a loss!

    4) When my computer crashes, once it starts again, it says "repairing" ... but I am not familiar with reparing permissions -- can you explain how I might do that?
If you are running OS X Lion, then you can restart your computer and then press and hold the 'Option' key immediately after you hear the start up 'gong' (usually heard when grey screen shows as it restarts).
You should see at least two Disks to choose from. Choose 'Recovery Disk' and wait for it to load, then choose 'Disk Utility' option in the Utilities dialog.
Once Disk Utility loads, do the following:
1 - In the left hand pane, choose your system partition (usually called either 'Macintosh HD' or 'Macintosh SSD'). Note - don't choose the actual hard drive listed above the partition when using Disk Utility in OS X Lion as this doesn't offer options for repairing due to it including the Recovery Disk you have loaded in memory.
2 - Click the 'First Aid' tab
3 - Click the 'Repair Disk Permissions' button in lower portion of main pane and allow to complete. Ideally, you will get a final message in main pane saying Disk Permissions are repaired.
4 - At lower right of same pane, click the 'Repair Disk' button and allow to complete. Ideally, you will get a final message indicating that Disk Repair is completed and all appears to be good.
5 - Quit Disk Utility > Close Utilities dialog window > Click 'Restart' button (confirm as needed).
You should boot straight into the system partition when complete.
Note - any red text in the main pane text while running the repairs will be issues and you will need to follow the advice given or post back.
If you are running Snow Leopard; then (as David mentions) boot from your first OS X reinstall disc and run the Disk Utility the same way; except you select the actual hard drive listed at top of left pane (not the partition below it). This is because Snow Leopard does not use a 'Recovery Disk' partition and repairs can be run on the HD or SSD itself.
    Hope that helps.

  • Frequent but random DNS issues

I have been experiencing frequent but random DNS issues that have been affecting my access to websites and above all email. The problem is that it comes and goes without any intervention on my part but when it becomes really bad I have found that changing the DNS server in the network settings tends to fix things immediately for a while until it starts up again a day or two later. Obviously this shouldn't be necessary and it's been happening now for several weeks.
At first I had problems with BT DNS and after hitting my head against a brick wall for a week or so was amazed that the problem cleared up as soon as I put in the Google DNS. Then yesterday I was having major hassles and I remembered the DNS trick so I tried Open DNS with no improvement but tried BT again and everything was immediately OK. Most of the time I've just been struggling along and waiting for things to improve.
In an effort to try and troubleshoot the email issues I contacted my webhost and ran a trace route which show *** hops immediately after listing the BT HomeHub rather than a clear path of progression that my webhost says may be related to an ICMP protocol block in the router but I'm still seeing this even if I temporarily disable the firewall on my homehub and computer.
I have spoken with various BT support staff and they clearly just don't understand the issues. I am sick of resetting the router and calling BT just to go through the same steps. On one call the support guy felt it was likely to be an issue with my router so I asked about them sending me a replacement and they won't do it.
After two years of headaches with non functioning YouView I've just about had it with BT. Does anybody have any suggestions how to fix these problems?

This is what a traceroute looks like when trying to connect to BT.com

Because GPS has nothing to do with WiFi, cellular signals, or data of any sort. GPS is implemented by signals sent by satellites that are received by GPS receivers. The receivers process the information from the GPS satellites and calculate your location. GPS never sends data anywhere; GPS functionality is receive only.
If you have WiFi or cellular data turned on this can improve the accuracy of GPS, because the GPS receiver can then use the known location of cell towers and WiFi networks to refine the GPS location. GPS by itself has an accuracy of 10 meters, or about 34 feet. Using the additional information from WiFi and cellular data this can be brought down to 3 meters (10 feet). This mode is called Augmented GPS, or A-GPS.

  • HT1430 My iPhone is two years old, but now seems to be loosing the charge more frequently, any ideas

My phone is loosing its charge more frequently I leave it on overnight, it's two years old.  Is there a life on the battery?

All batteries eventually fail. Make an appointment at any Apple store & the genius bar can confirm whether your battery needs replacing or not. If it needs replacing, the genius bar can handle such.

  • WRT54G2 v1 - Random internet drops, only power-cycling helps

    Hi, all
After 1 month I am still unable to solve my problem at all.
I have WRT54G2 v1, connected to my ISP with Static IP connection type, cloned MAC address. 4-5 times a day I get random internet connection drops and the router goes to some kind of "dead" state - no wired/wireless Internet, no access to the router's setup pages (neither locally, not remotedly).
The only solution is to unplug the power cord and replug it again after 10 secs. It's not in my ISP settings, because direct PC<-> Internet connection is OK.
I've managed to upgrade the firmware to version 1.00.04, reset the router etc.. As suggested by another user, I lowered MTU size to 1365 but I still get disconnects every day. IT'S REALLY VERY ANNOYING!!! I am not willing to become a babysitter to the router's power cable, so please anybody can help? When I am somewhere outside I cannot revive the router - I've no physical access to it, so my PC connection is dead for the entire day.
In this forum I see very similar problems to mine, but no solution for them. It seems like a general problem for this router model, so one of my questions is "Is LinkSys planning another firmware upgrade to solve this?". Next: is there an official way to submit such problems as a request for new firmware? I am not willing to switch to third-party firmwares like DD-WRT which everybody speaks good words like "no more drops", I have a warranty active.
My observations can give you one hint: I suspect that the router somehow cannot restore its connectivity when the ISP device (switch/modem, I don't know) I am connected to fails or reboots... I havent such problem for 10 days during my vacation and the only difference with my router's settings was that it was set in a LAN environment (thus, no failures from other networked devices). Could this be improved in the router's stability - to make some self-reboot? Or just a simple firmware improvement: add some keep-alive (auto-reboot) setting - some period in seconds for "Static IP" connection type?
    Thanks all in advance!
    Regards,
    Ivaylo

When the router enters such "unavailable" stata, I have no connection neither from a Wired desktop PC, nor from a Wirelessly connected laprop PC. I have no connection from outside (eg. trying to access router's setup page from my work or trying to be port-forwarded to my locally hosted PC site on 80 port). No any access at all!
After the resetting I am NOT restoring settings from a file! I make everything again manually from the setup pages. So I set up "Static IP" connection type, enter my statically assigned IP address, 2 DNS servers, as they're given to me by my ISP. I set MTU to manual 1365 (nothing from the forums helped: 1472, 1500 etc...). The wireless connectivity is WPA2, TKIP+AES, Channel 11 and is ok with the laptop. Everything seems fine.. until after few hours connectivity is lost.
As I've written, unplugging router's power cord and replugging again after 5-10 seconds and ... VOILA... connection is working. Why such reboot fixes the things? My suspicions are that the router cannot compensate after some reboot of some ISP's device I am connected to - why didn't I have such problems when during my vacation I've just changed "Static IP" settings to point to a local IP addresses in the building I've been? This is the only difference - connected in a LAN is OK, because no malfunction/reboot takes place, connected to a remote device which is randomly (or perhaps intentionally, who knows) rebooted from the ISP side is not OK.
Any bug in the firmware? Some situation not captured programmatically?
    Thanks for the help!

  • My MacBook Retina has been shutting off multiple times per day. It is beginning to happen more frequently. What can I do to locate the exact issue? My warranty has expired so I would like to get to the bottom of it without taking it in to an apple store.

It is beginning to shutdown with no warning more frequently. What can I do to locate the exact issue? My warranty has expired so I would like to get to the bottom of it without taking it in to an apple store.
I am currently learning how to do diagnostics on mac hardware but I am not a native mac user. It is unlikely that this is a software issue. Please, any input will be helpful.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • How to make a text becoming more and more visible?

Maybe I didn't use google well, but I didn't find anything in the internet what could solve my question.
I basically want to work with a white background, where a text is on which becomes more and more visible the more it comes closer to the bottom. The tricky thing is, it's for a website, so it has to be responsive for smartphones or tablets for example (first idea: put the white background layer to the front like it makes the text behind it more and more visible/invisible?). Any ideas how to solve that? Would be so great to know.

I'm not sure what it means to "be responsive for smartphones or tablets"...  People put complex graphics on those things all the time.  They have unprecedented power.
Photoshop can help you do what you're describing.  What you want is no more complex than putting a gradient mask on a layer so as to create partial transparency.  You could have fading text (as a graphic) or a fading solid color fill that would overlay text rendered by a browser.
    Just some graphic ideas...
Save as a PNG-24 to get partial transparency that a browser can render.
