Random IP Addresses stopping me use the internet

Not sure how best to explain this, as it is an intermittent problem.
I have a macbook pro that uses the internet fine, no problems. I have a small PC laptop that uses the internet fine, no problems. I have a Power PC dual 450Mhz attempting to use the internet, with intermittent problems. I have a 3rd party Realtek wireless card, that I appear to have to keep de-installing and re-installing the OS X Drivers for to get onto the internet. I have broadband through Sky, and an Airport Extreme Base Station. Internet appears to work temporarily through either AEBS or the Sky router (although more problems occur with self assigning the IP address with the Sky router than with the AEBS). When it works I have the following in TCP/IP-
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.0.1
Occasionally this info remains the same, advises me I am on the internet, but am unable to open any web browsers. If I refresh the DHCP lease, it either comes up with the same info, or a newly assigned IP address of eg. 169.254.162.94 comes up, and I cannot connect to the internet, and each time I refresh the DHCP lease the same IP address comes up.
Does anyone know why this is happening, I seem to be able to go onto the internet for about 5 minutes before something crashes it.
It all works fine on my other computers, I have recently upgraded to 10.4.11 and have 896MB of RAM.
Any help appreciated, Ian

Okay, let's back-track a little and start removing variables.
"You have the AEBS shut down now, right?" Correct (However when this is turned on, my PC and Powerbook both connect to either wireless network without a problem)
"And the Sky router is up and broadcasting wireless, correct?" Correct
"Are you running a secure wireless network with WEP or WPA authentication?" Running WPA
"Is the G4 in close enough proximity to get good signal from the Sky router?"
It is through in a conservatory about 8 metres away, almost in a direct line from the router with a glass opening door in between. It has always previously worked fine when the router was upstairs and the G4 downstairs. I have also brought it in next to the router and tried wireless and it still has not worked. I have plugged the ethernet cable directly in and we do get internet.
Based on what you're describing, it sounds a lot like the G4 is getting spotty wireless connection and dropping the link. Have you tried just opening System Preferences/Network, making the wireless connection and just watching what happens there? (Yes, now, I have 2 setups, "Automatic" and "Desk" one for manual DHCP assignment and one for Auto using DHCP.
I have sat there, and with the manual IP addresses given installed, I get a green light and it states that it is connected to the internet, but when you try and open a browser it doesn't work. My Auto setup now just consistently defaults to a 192.254.xxx.xxx and now vv.v.v.v.v.v. randomly may it actually connect to a 192.168.xxx.xx IP address and get the browser working, then it will default back to a 254 setup.
When using DHCP routers, it's usually not a good idea to manually assign IP addresses on client machines unless that IP address is reserved in the DHCP server and tied to a particular machine record (MAC address). That said, there are some devices that will only work when they're assigned a reserved address in the DHCP server, and your Realtek card might be one of them. If you're comfortable working in the router DHCP configuration settings, you should be able to add the G4 to the address reservation list if the router can see it.
the above to be honest I would have no idea on how to set up so if you could talk me through it that would be great. I also do not know what the renew lease does and whether this is something I should click on each time. The ther part of the problem I have is I am unable to run a diagnostics check or assistant because I do not have airport running and the setup for the step by step guide isn't geared towards having a 3rd party PCI network wireless card?
Help would be greatly appreciated, because I do not know what to do and cannot afford to replace this machine currently.
Thanks Ian

You can do as others have done, install Little Snitch & use the Network Monitor to view what is happening, that thread has some good advice. http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html
@Topher, Activity Monitor is a bit pants for tracking processes that respawn or just go away (I assume its because it's an on-demand job, have you got a nice article on 'mach services', Linc confused me !? ).
ocspd seems to do that in my limited testing,

  • IMac Stops Using the Internet Connection

While browsing, my iMac will suddenly stop communicating with the internet. AirPort, Chrome, and all Mac software are working fine, it just "forgets" how to connect. It shows everything is as it should and is still connected to my home network, but won't operate at all. The only solution is to reset from Time Machine. Anyone else have this problem?

Best way ti fix it !
iMac and MacBooks have the  ( PHY Mode:    802.11n ) as standard

    what you need to do
go About this Mac  > More Info... > Overview > Than > System Report..
Than from the lest under Network - Wi-Fi
you will get report about your network Interfaces ,
    your router name here  :
      PHY Mode:    802.11n

    why is that happened ?
when your router set in auto mode , if any other pc or laptop join the network the router will change the mode from 802.11n than your mac will lose the connection setting and you will need to refresh the network

  • IPhone shuts off when I use the internet on the 3G network & I can't upgrade/restore because of network connection error. Any Help?

A few months ago, while on the 3G network, my iPhone 3GS starting turning off randomly when I was using safari or an online app and the battery was somewhere around 5-20%. When this happened the only way to get the phone back on was by fully charging it which sometimes took a few hours even. It wasn't a big deal at the time because it was infrequent and while the phone was at a low battery %. However, in the past few months, around the time I upgraded to iOS 5.1 it started happened more and more often and at higher and higher battery percentages. It is now at a point where my phone shuts off every time I connect to the 3G network regardless of what my battery life is. I have called Rogers several times to complain about this and I have been told it is because of the battery for the most part but I don’t buy it; the problem has got to be more significant than the battery alone because I can listen to music and send texts at anytime and fully use the internet when I am connected to Wi-Fi. I more recently talked to someone in tech support from Rogers who said my phone cannot support the iOS 5.1 software and that is why it is crashing. They also asked if my phone was heating up more now than in the past and it is. They said this was further evidence that my phone was couldn't handle the new software and was basically on overload.  I was told to the best solution was to "Back Up" my iPhone then do a full "Restore". Here is where my next problem comes along. I cannot "Restore" my iPhone without doing an upgrade and every time I attempt to "Upgrade & Restore" an error message pops up that says "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "...". The network connection timed out/was reset. -Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later". I have followed all of the protocol that is readily available online to address this problem but still no success. I disabled my firewall and anti-virus programs, I have ensured my connection is active and stable, I have upgraded to the newest iTunes, I have uninstalled iTunes and all apple programs in the correct order then reinstalled iTunes, I have disabled my DNS cache. Nothing works.
If you have any advise whatsoever please share as it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I was actually able to upgrade to the newest software, iOS 5.1.1 without connecting to my computer/iTunes but rather directly through my phone when I was home on Wi-Fi. After the upgrade I plugged my phone into a different USB port at the back of my computer and was able to do a full restore. I really don't think the USB port had anything to do with it because I use the same front USB port all the time with my external hard drive and other devices wuth no problems at all; regardless of what the actual solution was, I am now able to connect to iTunes and upgrade/restore without any problems so that half of my problem is resolved.
I have yet to leave my house since doing the upgrade/restore so I am not sure if the problem with my phone crashing when I use the interent on the 3G is still an issue. I will test it today and tomorrow and give you an update.
    Thanks

  • Does anyone else have to renew their DHCP Lease every 30 seconds when using the internet?

Everytime I want to use the internet for surfing the web or browsing iTunes etc I have to go into System Preferences and navigate through to a button that says "Renew DHCP Lease". If watching catch-up TV online I have to click this button every 30 seconds or so because the programme freezes, and if I'm surfing the web or browsing iTunes I have to click it every time I want to update the content of the page. Does anybody know what my problem might be?

This Fix has got things working for me.
I have reprinted this response from another thread I have made (Repost) A number of people were asking me about my fix, so I have expanded my response to hopefully offer a little more clarity.
I was having this problem the other night after I finished doing a massive upgrade to our Home Network (New Router, Modem, Cabling, Etc)
I had to reset my DHCP lease every few minutes, in the end I found Mac Mini's IP Address kept setting itself to other items on the Network, I have some items connected on wired (ethernet) and some were connected on WiFi (Airport Extreme) after clicking the DHCP Lease Renew the Mac Mini would grab an IP address that it thought was available but then another item on my network would "check in" then we would have a clash, The Mac Mini was grabbing what it thought was an available IP address, the DHCP Renew button was not setting the Mac Mini's IP number far enough away to stop the clash.
I was watching the items on my Routers Attached devices screen, The Mac Mini would show up on the page with its new address (after hitting the DHCP Renewal button) then something else would check in with that exisiting IP Address, clash and the Mac Mini would need it's DHCP lease renewed again.
    My Network consists of:
    - Mac Mini (Wired)
    - Acer Laptop (Wired)
    - PS3 (1) (wired)
    - Apple TV (wired)
    - Airport Extreme (wired and looking ater WiFi duties throughout the house)
    - PS3 (2) (WiFi)
    - TV (WiFi)
    - iPad (WiFi)
    - Nexus 7 (WiFi)
    - Printer (WiFi)
I'll be the first to admit my Networking knowledge is limited (and I'm learning more all the Time) but I simply went into the preferences panel and set the IP address manually.
    1. I went into Preferences and selected Network
    2. Set Configure IPV4 to: using DHCP with manual address
Now it helped I had my NetGear Routers "Attached devices" Page open here so I could see the address of everything else on my network (I went and switched everything on that was web connected so it would be logged in and running on the network) I looked at the last digit or 2 of every item on my network and then set my new IP address.
    3. To ensure I wouldn't have any more clashes I set my new IP address far away from the the others* your only changing the last digit or 2 of the IP address, so in the case of my Mac Mini it went from
xxx.xxx.02 to xxx.xxx.0.52 (note the x's are normally your IP address numbers)
*I originally set it to xxx.xxx.09 but I since found the TV had that IP address (The one thing I forgot to check the previous night) so I this is when I decided to set it far away from the rest of the bunch by setting it to .52 (No specific reason for 52, that was just the 1st number to pop into my head)
Now that was over a week ago and since then I have had no more issues on my Network, so far everything is running smooth and fast. (It has now been over 3 weeks since I posted this, and everything is still working perfectly, I suggested this solution to 2 friends having the same issue and it also fixed there problems as well)
I'm not saying this is the be all and end all to the problem, there must be a more permanent solution out there, but this is working for me so far.

  • Why can't I use the Internet on my Mac?

I need help. My MacBook Pro as recently stopped using the Internet.
I went to a hotel to stay the night, and I tried connecting to their Internet on Mozilla, and it just keeps loading and loading and loading. So I tried Minecraft, and it kept loading and loading and loading and eventually it said,  "could not connect".
I am now at my grandmother's home and it is doing the same thing. I tried Opera, and it still didn't work. I finally tried Safari and it still just loaded.
I tried to perform a software update, I though it would help, but I need Internet for that too.
I could really use some help here. Please let me know.
I am going to Apple on Monday if we can't fix it.
    Help me please.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Airtunes cutting in and out when using the internet.

    Hi all,
I know this topic has been covered before and there is a support page for this problem on the apple website but I haven't been able to fix the problem using either hence the post so sorry for repetition.
As the title says my airtunes keeps cutting in and out, but it only seems to happen when I am actively using the internet. What I mean to say is that if the internet is connected and sitting there dormant it works fine, but as soon as a start to surf or download it cuts out, the higher the download/upload rate the longer the cut outs are until it stops all together.
    My network contains the following,
2 Computers (1 iMac and 1 MacBook Pro)
    1 Airport Express
The iMac is the host of the network, it also is the provider of the internet via a USB mobile broadband stick shared out via Airport (which cannot be connected directly into the Airport Express). Airport Express is used purely for Airtunes.
I could not change the channel setting to test for interference in Airport Utility as the iMac was the host. I tried changing the whole network channel on the iMac but the cut outs still occurred.
I use the MacBook Pro to send the audio from iTunes to Airport Express, distance would only be about 4 meters with no physical barriers such as stereo/cables/walls etc.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Jarrod.

    Any idea's please?

  • How do you know when you are using the internet?

If I am using an app that requries internet, and I press the middle button to get out of it am I still using part of my data plan?

While you are using the app if you are not on WiFi you are using the internet. If the app is one of the few that can run in the background you need to close it to stop it from using your data plan. Double click the home (middle) button, hold down your finger on the app, when you see a red circle with a dashed white line next to the app icon tap it, press the home button.

  • Using the Internet Toolkit

I am able to successfully send an e-mail using the Internet Toolkit; however, the "message" is always empty (the text string wired to message in my VI does not appear in the e-mail). I have tried different types of Email VIs and I always have the same problem. I am running Windows and I have charset=us-ascii. What am I missing?

As I recall this was an old bug that I patched in my code some time ago. Unfortunately I don't remember what the exact problem was. Send me your email address and I'll send you a VI that I know works.

  • MacBook always crashing, usually only using the internet (Chrome/Firefox/Safari)

Usually, when I'm using the notebook, it simply crashes, with no reason and most of the time I'm just using the internet (most of the time I'm doing this).
My macbook is a late '09 model.
It's kind of hard to explain and find the reason this happens, because it has no "trigger", eventually, it just slows down and stop responding for a good 8 minutes and then it slowly goes back to work. I tried reducing the number of apps runing at the same time, tried updating the software, tried cleaning the computer and whatever I found, but it still crashes even when I have only one tab with a wikipedia file open.
What is going on with the computer?
Also, the rubber base of the notebook is "jumping" out, I was using the notebook and heard a "flap" and there was the rubber out of it's place... What should I do to fix this? Any ideas?

My iPhone 5 has suddenly stopped connecting to the internet when away from home. It was fine last Wednesday, then on Thursday all I got was 'Safari is no longer connected to the internet'. I cannot use the Messaging, Find my Friends etc.
