Random iPhoto 11 images missing

Hi there - I'm new to the community and had a couple of questions regarding iPhoto '11 (which continues to frustrate the heck out of me!).
1. Some of my images that were in my iPhoto library are now showing only the cached thumbnails.  When I click on the thumbnail, no image is displayed, just a big explanation mark.  If I select 'Reveal in Finder', none of the options (Original/Modified) are available.  I am able to manually locate the image on my drive however and can confirm that the location and filename have not been changed.
2. I'll sometimes get the 'photo cannot be displayed because the file could not be found' dialog, even though I was able to view the image without a problem the previous time I had opened iPhoto.  I go through the dialog steps of re-locating the photo (which had never moved in the first place) and all seems well but after a few times opening iPhoto, I'll start to get the same dialog again.
This same issue has happened several times since I first installed iPhoto when it was first released. I've rebuilt the library & thumbnails, re-located 'missing' files and even started from scratch a couple of times.  iPhoto seems to play well for a time, then these issues start back up again.  I'd like to keep using iPhoto but I'm seriously frustrated; any help would be appreciated!
Not sure if it needs mentioning but I only have around 4000 images and don't use the 'Copy items to the iPhoto library' preference - I prefer to have my images outside iPhoto because of all the hassles I've been having.
Cheers!

The exclamtation mark is an indication that the file path to the original file has been broken.
Since you are running a "referecned" library you will have to manually relink the thumbnails to the original files wherever they may be.  You can do that with those that give your the "Can't find file" messager.
So try this: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
You probably will continue to have problems with the library seeing as it's a "referenced" library and is very fragile.

  • IPhoto images missing in Edit window after importing iPhoto albums folder

A friend of mine with new macbook tried to import her iPhoto images from an external hardrive. She move it to her user photo album and then i believe she tried to point to it after launching iphoto. She told me there were some options windows popping up and she does not remember what they said but the current result is that many of her photos do not appear when she clicks on the thumb nails to edit them: said there is a grey field with a questin mark.
My thought was to somehow repoint to the file or dump the .plst file.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you,

The question mark shows up when the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window loses the location of the file it points to.
The most common cause of this is User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
    As your friend now sees.
Unless your friend nows exactly what changes she has made, I'm afraid the best way to fix this is to start again, importing from your originals folder.
There are comprehensive instructions for moving the iPhoto Library Folder in the Help, or if you need more you can most on here.

  • IPhoto images missing from Time Machine

I can't find my iPhoto library in Time Machine.
I deleted my iphoto library from my Macbook recently.
When I go to previous Time Machine back ups, I can't find the library.
    I have tried searching:
    Library.photolibrary
dsc_ (which is the start of the filename for the photos in that library)
I can locate my iPhoto library, but when I open the enclosing folder there are no folders with images.
Is there anyway that I can locate the missing photos?

  • Random picture folders missing after import

I am running a Macbook pro. I use a 120gb external drive to store my photos as i have about 40 gb of both RAW and JPEG images.
I have attempted to import these as referenced images as per the Aperture guide but when the folders are imported random ones are missing.
I have also tried importing a limited number selected folders folders as managed images into aperture but random folders still disapear.
Acoording to the pro DVD that came with aperture importing referanced files by clicking import > "folders as projects" should create a mirror image of my file system on my external hardrive but with thumbnails as opposed to the full sized raw file.
Is this random file import a problem with aperture, or am i doing something wrong?
    thanks,
    Rob

A possibility is that the files have multiple tags, i.e. both id3v1 and id3v2.x. iTunes seems to behave best when there is a single properly populated id3v2.3 tag.
If you move you library properly there is no need to "Add Folder to Library" on the new system and such problems don't arise.

  • Keep transitions intact when importing mult. iPhoto images into iMovie HD?

Is it possible to import a completed iPhoto album show with hundreds of images with random transitions between each into iMovie while still keeping the random transitions between the iPhoto images intact?
If not, is there a way to select random transitions between the still images in iMovie once they get there rather than select and create each and every one of the transitions myself?
    Thanks!

Because iMovie and iPhoto serve different purposes, each has features not found in the other. There is no way in iMovie to automatically add random transitions to slideshows, for example, while iPhoto offers that feature. (In iMovie, the assumption is the user wants absolute control over such features, wants to control each frame of the slideshow.)
That doesn't prevent you from having your cake and eating it too, however. Remember, many of the iLife apps allow you move stuff around between them.
For example, you can create a slideshow containing random transitions in iPhoto, export it to a QuickTime movie, import that movie to iMovie, add titles and songs, add some video from a video camera, add a voiceover narration, add some Chapter Markers, add an iMovie theme to introduce each chapter, then send the iMovie project off to iDVD to burn a DVD that plays on a TV.
So, check out the File > Export command in iPhoto. Set the exported movie to 640x480. The command will export your iPhoto slideshow to an MPEG-4 type QuickTime movie. Create a new MPEG-4 type iMovie project and import that movie to it. (Use the disclosure arrow towards the bottom of the window where you name the new iMovie project to select the MPEG-4 project type.)

  • Help: import iphoto images into FCE

Hi, Jake here. Hope you're all doing well....
I just bumped up from iMovie 06 to FCE. Loving it so far, but still overwhlemed by the learning curve.
Today's big question is how to best import a series of photos from iPhoto into FCE. I will be mixing photos & videos for most of my projects. I have tried these two things so far:
    1) Dragged & dropped from iphoto directly onto the FCE timeline. Image looks very blurry.
    2) Exported at max JPEG quality from iphoto to a location on my hard drive. Then imported file into FCE, then placed on timeline. It's every bit as blurry.
Both images have a green line above them, indicating a preview render?? I don't get it, but I just know photos weren't blurry in the store when the Mac guys showed this to me a couple weeks ago.
So what is the easiest way to do this? I want to import photos quickly & easily, then add effects & movement, but I can't believe that Apple has made it so cumbersome. I imagine I am missing something here. Please advise.
    Thanks!
    Jake

I think Jake did everything correctly but is expecting too much from a DV format.
    I repeated the same with a 2304 × 1736 (4 megapixel) image and I got the same:
    - dragging a Photo JPEG image (square pixels) to a DV (PAL or NTSC) sequence requires rendering: I get the same green render bar on top
    - in addition the resolution loss from 2304 × 1736 to 720x480 (or 720x576) makes the image blurry
If you compare the iPhoto image and the imported image in the viewer (not in the timeline) you see basically the same quality; but the same image already converted into the timeline is blurry.
I'm afraid Jake has to live with this or move to HD. In any case iMovie could do no better than FCE.
My suggestion in any case is always to check the final quality of the movie, during editing, on an interlaced monitor (TV) connected through firewire and a D/A converter (e.g. camcorder): mostly for still images.

  • Downsize iPhoto images & export them to a folder using Automator?

Please bear with me. I wasn't sure where to post this since I can't find an Automator string in the Discussions window. This is what I'd like to do. I'm making web site using iWeb and I love it. However, when dragging and dropping images into iWeb from the iPhoto media browser, it imports the original iPhoto image into iWeb and not the edited one. This seems stupid to me but there it is. So as some have suggested I thought I'd grab and album and have all the photos in it downsized to 800x(constrained proportion). Can Automator do this? When i poke around in the iPhoto actions in Automator I don't see much. I've searched AutomatorWorld also and can't find anything there. Am I being dim about this?

    Benjamin
I can't help you with Automator, but there is an Automator forum under the Mac OS X 10.4 folder, where I'm sure they'll help.

  • TS3195 My mac mini (Snow Leopard, v10.6.8) does not acknowledge my iphone 4, iphone 4s or ipad2 in iPhoto, Image Capture, iSync or Preview but it does in iTunes.  I am at a loss for importing photos, short of emailing them.  Glitch with OS X 10.6.8 ?

My Mac Mini (v10.6.8) does not acknowledge my iphone as a device in iPhoto, Image Capture, iSync or Preview although, iTunes does.  I am at a loss for importing photos other than emailing them to myself. Same problem with my iphone 4, iphone 4s, ipad2 and New iPad. Is this a problem with OS X 10.6.8 as I read some posts claim? Please help.

I was able to import photos in iPhoto and Image capture when I was running SL 10.6.8 on my older MacBook.
Did you try quitting everything, restart the Mac and then try again?
Are there any updates at all for the Mac? I was helping one user not all that long ago and there were updates for her Mac software that had nothing to do with the OS and when she downloaded the updates - the iPad was then recognized in iTunes.

  • Where will i find iphoto images in my backup

ok so i backed up my macbook pro but can't seem to find my iphoto images.  there isn't the option to search for all pictures like there would be on the mac and when i click on the iphoto icon in my pictures folder it just brings up a box and tells me how many kb it is.
i've looked everywhere but can't see it and don't want to download mavericks till i'm sure i have everything i need backed up (just in case)

Make a note of the size of the iPhoto library in your Time Machine backups.
    Close Time Machine
Click the  Finder icon at the lower left of the dock on the Mac's screen
    Open the Pictures folder
Click on the iPhoto Library to highlight it
Click the gear icon above the window and click Get Info
Note the size of the iPhoto library
The size of your iPhoto library should match the size of the iPhoto library in your Time Machine backups
Assuming that is the case, your iPhoto library is backed up

  • My iphoto is missing - Help!

Up until a few days ago, I used iphoto with no problems. When I tried to open iphoto tonight, it would not open. I noticed that a question mark (?) appeared on top of the icon. I also noticed a new icon on the desktop call "Preview". I have never seen this icon before. When i tried to move the iphoto icon it dissappeared off the desktop, but "Preview" remain. I went to Applications and iphoto is missing from the list of application icons.
    What do I do?

    Hi Terrence,
You said, "That question mark means that your iPhoto got moved and the dock can't find it." How does that happen?
Yes, I am new to macs so I get nervous when weird things happen - like files disappearing.
No I haven't explored the tutorials yet, thanks for providing the link. I'll check it out - I'm just impatient.
Well, I am off to attempt the re-install of iphoto. Wish me luck!

  • How to see iPhoto images in finder?

How do I see iPhoto library images in Finder, and also how do I access iPhoto images to download them as album artwork in iTunes?

In general, you don't see the iPhoto images in the Finder. iPhoto replaces the Finder for everything you do with your images.

    Hi,
I have my iPhoto images held on an external drive. When I use time machine (incidently the same drive) with iPhoto open, will it save the iPhoto files from that library?

    Thats a tricky one...
My time machine settings has the time machine drive excluded under options in the preference pane.
Coincidently it isnt backing up anything on that drive (there other files other than the time machine backup).
My iPhoto Library lives on another external drive and it is happily backing that drive up....
    Hope that helps.
