Random iTunes launching

I have not seen this listed anywhere so if it is I apologize but for some reason I have begun to experience iTunes launching itself for no apparent reason. I might be doing anything (browser, mail, any application) and suddenly iTunes opens and plays the first song in my library. I have checked preferences so I know it's not a login setting plus it can happen at any time. All OS is up to date as is iTunes. I have run disk permissions repairs and see no notes made. It's not hard to close the program once it starts but it is an aggravation. Anyone else had this occur or do I have a poltergeist?

This happens to me regularly, when Firefox 3.6.3 (with FlashBlock and AdBlockPlus active) is open in multiple tabs. In fairly minimal usage today, I've already had to Forcequit iTunes half a dozen times, and have taken to working with Activity Monitor open so that I can see the iTunes process right away. I'm suspecting some kind of AV content in sites that pop up in my Google Reader feed, but I'm not sure what. This is relatively new behavior (perhaps with the most recent iTunes update. Since I don't use iTunes at work and don't sync my iPod Touch at work, I'm tempted to archive the iTunes app bundle, if there's no other way to Make This Behavior Stop.
Any ideas?

  • 3G no longer shows up on desktop, spinning beach ball on iTunes launch

After playing with my new 3G all day, which included several successful syncs with iTunes, the iPhone no longer shows up on the desktop. iTunes launches automatically but just sits there with the spinning beach ball. Have to Force Quit. The iPhone also no longer displays Sync In Progress. Repaired Permissions, restarted, tried various combinations of plugging/unplugging the iPhone with no success. Any ideas?

I am having this problem too, but I just leave it plugged in and eventually it pops up. It has taken up to 3 minutes.
How long have you given it?

  • HT1222 "Data Execution Prevention" not letting ITunes launch. How do I remove DEP?

How do I get rid of Data Execution Prevention!!!??? All of a sudden this annoying little program wont allow me to open Itunes!! I tried turning it off the way they said to but it still blocks itunes. I even reinstalled Itunes No luck  I still cant use Itunes  HELP!!!

And no problem for "barging in"; your expertise in solving Windows issues is always welcome. Cheers.
    Thank you.
The situation with these changed up a bit with the introduction of the iTunes 10.5.x versions and above. (A "new problem wearing old trousers" event.) I have a note in the Full Host Bar about it, though it's speculative. Here's the content of the post there:
There's various possible causes for DEP errors when launching iTunes for Windows. But in recent times we've been able to get past a number of them by updating folk's QuickTime Player to the latest version. For example:
Re: When I tried to update to 10.6.3 it failed
The interesting thing about that is that since iTunes for Windows 10.5.x, you aren't supposed to need QuickTime for Windows componentry to be installed in order for iTunes for Windows to launch. So it's not likely that the DEP errors are being caused purely by the lack of QuickTime componentry on the PCs in question (or by the lack of new-enough versions of QuickTime componentry on the PCs in question).
One putative mechanism for what's going on.
I've noticed (in the course of other experimentation) that if the QuickTime Player is uninstalled on an XP system and iTunes for Windows (some version post 10.5.x) is launching, I can get a message saying that certain kinds of content can't be played because QuickTime isn't installed.
So there's a task performed by iTfW when launched to check on the presence of certain types of QTfW componentry. If the answer is "that componentry is not present", a routine is run that shows the dialog saying that certain content can't be played.
It's plausible that Data Execution Prevention is interpreting the routine that produces the dialog as being a malicious act on some systems, and throwing the DEP error when the routine is run.
That would explain why updating (or possibly installing) the latest version of the QuickTime Player is getting people past the DEP errors. The check for QTfW componentry is run when itunes launches, but it determines that the componentry is present. So the routine that produces the dialog isn't run, and Data Execution Prevention doesn't feel compelled to throw the DEP error.

For example, the screen brightness, the mission control, the keyboard back-lit light, the volume adjust. Without all these, my mac experience would be awful. Im just wondering if there are other solution beside for turning the Fn keys on.

  • ITunes launches each time I open Safari

    Hi,
Each time I launch Safari, iTunes launches. A clue: iTunes immediately goes to the store and brings up an app called SendStuffNow. This is a real pain. At one point I had downloaded the (free) app, but decided I didn't want it and deleted it. Now it won't leave me alone!

Perhaps a long shot, but you might try resetting Safari (File menu -> Reset Safari). It may be holding onto the URL to an app in the iTunes Store and thereby reopening it every time.
    Hope this helps.

itunes launches by itself in OS 10.6.8. Anyone know of any fixes?

    =iTunes automatically opens=
Right click on iTunes in Dock and see if "Open at startup is checked"
See if a device is attached and "open iTunes when iPod is connected" is selected. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16483979#16483979
Check for other iTunes preference settings that might cause this.

When I click to open Firefox, iTunes launches instead, and no Firefox browser window appears.

Actually... I take it back. I TRIED to update to 16.0.2, but I keep getting the error message that Firefox must be closed first. I'm using Chrome to send these messages, and have also closed iTunes, in case that was contributing to the problem. No use... I can't install the upgrade.

mac osx 10.6.8 itunes launches automatically and will not respond to quit or force quit in the Activities Monitor.  When I quit or go into the Activities monitor and try to quit, it goes off, briefly, then immediately relaunches.  If i turn the computer off, and then on, iTunes launches automatically.  ITunes 10.4.  The only thing I remember doing different, lately, is I just updated a couple of days ago.  Has anyone else had this issue?  Thanks!

  • ITunes Launch Failed When trying to authorize Disney Digital Copy

I recently bought two older Disney Movies Tangled and Up that used the old disc based method for authorizing a digital copy.  On both movies, after selecting the itunes option, i recieve the error below:
    iTunes Launch Failed.
Your iTunes software is either out
of date, not currently installed in your computer, or does not meet the minimum
    system requirements. Click
here to download the latest version of iTunes. If you experience problems
with the iTunes software, please contact Apple support at http://www.apple.com/support/itunes.
This seems to be related to the new iTunes version 12.1.1 since this disc based authentication worked on ver 11 and 10 for me on the same computer.  I have tried on multiple machines all running the 12.1.1 version with the same results (dont have any with the old version )
The are all running windows 7 64 bit.  I attempted to redeem using the option in itunes directly and digitalcopyplus but it states i must authenticate with the disc.

I tried extracting the DVD contents and editing the xml to remove the version number but to no avail.  I am in the right place to get an answer for this issue?

  • ITunes launches by itself and won't quit

Re-posting this b/c I got no responses, havn't found an answer in the forums, and am still experiencing the problem.
My system is an imac running 10.5.6 and itunes8.
recently itunes launched for no apparent reason. we haven't used it in months. when i quit, even force quit, it immediately relaunches.
we have not installed any itunes related widgets.
on restart, itunes launched itself approximately an hour later, and will not quit.
i saw issues with a process called "genredetection" but that is not running per Activity Monitor.
Anyone else have this issue or know the cause?
    Thanks!

I might have solved this problem on my newly setup Snow Leopard system -- didn't have it on my old Tiger system.
I have multiple accounts setup. My day-to-day account is non-admin. Checked Login Items - no iTunes Helper.
However, one admin account had iTunes Helper setup as a login item. I removed it.
iTunes no longer launches by itself. Yay!
Note that Fast User Switching is turned off, so I can't see any way this would fix the problem, but it stopped, and I'm

  • ITunes launches when I DISCONNECT iPhone or iPod

I have looked around, but have not found a reason as to why iTunes is launching when I disconnect my iPhone or iPod. I do not have it set to launch when the iPhone is connected so it's only when I disconnect that iTunes launches.

my recommendation would be you try this:
remove iTunes completely (click here and follow the instructions), then reinstall it. download the current version from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
also, sometimes it helps to remove and reinstall the *Apple Mobile Device Service*. click here and follow the instructions.
    any help ?

  • ITunes Launches whenever I plug in my Ipod,  How to stop it???

This is amazingly annoying. There are times when I want to plug in my ipod to my PC just to charge it. But for the last month or so, ITunes launches automatically.
This is a real problem because Itunes dominates the PC during its long load time.
HOW DO I TURN IT OFF?
I've gone through EVERYTHING in preferences, and is still loads automatically.
    Please help.

  • Stop iTunes launching when iphone is supervised by another computer

I'm testing an iPhone for work and as a pre-existing iPhone and iPad user, have a small USB hub to charge and sync my devices. The problem I now have is that whenever I connect my work iPhone (a 5c), iTunes launches itself and then tells me that "this iPhone is supervised by another computer and cannot be used with this computer". Of course this means I can't tell iTunes not to launch when I connect that device as there are no device-specific settings accessible to me.
Is there any way of forcing iTunes to stop its (frankly silly) behaviour of launching whenever I connect any iOS device?
I've already turned this function off for the three devices I own so if there is a global setting somewhere, I'd appreciate a pointer. Otherwise it looks like I'll need a separate power feed just to charge this one device.
    Thanks,
    Guy

The phone was not properly reset by the previous owner. You can try deleting any profiles on the phone in Settings. If that fails try Settings/General/Reset - Erase all content and settings. And if that fails it is probably a stolen phone.
