Random Keyboard Unresponsive

Hello, I just got my Macbook a couple days ago and I've noticed already a couple times where the keyboard randomly becomes unresponsive, usually for a minute or under and for no apparent reason. I opened other programs such as Textedit, Finder, and Safari while this was happening and it still wouldn't respond. But then it would come back and be fine. Should I wait and see, or send it back or?? Any help would be appreciated. Also, this usually happens when I'm using Safari, but the keyboard doesn't work in any programs while it's happening.

Have you done a software update since you got the macbook? There was an update addressing this problem a few weeks back, and I think it solved this problem for most users.

  • My trackpad and keyboard randomly become unresponsive on MBP Retina

I just got my Macbook Pro with Retina a week ago. Its the newest model that just came out the week I got it. Its a 13 Inch. I noticed when I am using it, the trackpad and kayboard randomly become unresponsive for sometime. I have to close it and wait for it to start working again. Do you have any idea what the problem might be. Should I contact Apple?

I went through this with my old Late 2008 Macbook Uni when I installed Kingston Value RAM.
Take your new RAM out - install your old RAM back - do a PRAM reset and see if your keyboard and trackpad are working again.
Once that's done - turn your Macbook off - install the new RAM - if keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive again - install different brand of RAM.
I ended up intalling Crucial RAM in mine.
    Good luck.

  • Don't want random keyboard & mouse events to wake from sleep

is there any way to prevent a random keyboard press or mouse movement from waking up the computer? a terminal setting or something? ideally, i'd just like to use the power button to do this--or at the very least to completely disable the mouse's ability to wake the machine, and specify a certain key or something.
seems like an obvious setting that's missing...or that i'm overlooking...?
    thanks!

    Thanks.
If it's a BlueTooth mouse you can uncheck the option in the Keyboard & Mouse preferences.

  • X11 keyboard unresponsive

I access my company's system remotely via web/X11 and have been doing without problem. Recently I can still connect as normal but cannot type anything. Trackpad is fine but keyboard unresponsive. I'm running 10.5.7 and X11 2.3.3.2. Anyone had similar issues?

Resolved by installing X11 version 2.3.2, as suggested on XQuartz FAQ.

  • Keyboard and trackpad freeze and randomly become unresponsive

    I've got a MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011) running Mac OS X 10.8.2.
Since a few weeks ago at random intervals my keyboard and trackpad become permanently unresponsive. I don't recall any particular cause or change that would have caused this to start happening.
What happens is that the trackpad and keyboard will stop functioning completely. The computer, display etc. would continue to function properly:
    The clock keeps ticking.
If music were playing it would continue etc.
Internet connectivity (via an ethernet cable or WiFi) continues to work as well (a download will continue, and even resume if I disconnect and reconnect the ethernet cable).
Presssing the power button will bring up the shutdown dialog as usual (but I can't use it, obviously, so a forced shutdown needs to be performed instead by holding down the power button longer).
.. but the keyboard and trackpad are rendered inoperable, as if they were no longer connected.
I've made no progress in finding out what could possibly be the cause of this. A few observations:
It has never happened while not using the keyboard (e.g. watch a DVD with TV series for a few hours, and afterwards the keyboard would always be fine).
It always happens while actively typing (e.g. while in the middle of replying to an e-mail).
It is not a temporary problem, the keyboard and trackpad will not become responsive again after some time (the computer isn't particulary occupied with calculating something big, no beachball and no busy mechanical noises).
It does not happen progessively. It works fine and snappy one second, and I'm touching a dead keyboard a split second later.
I tried connecting a USB keyboard but that doesn't seem to work either (I'm mentioning this since some of the linked threads below close with that as a solution).
Possibly related (although I haven't found anything in these threads):
Keyboard causes trackpad to not function properly
    Keyboard and trackpack freeze
    Keyboard and Trackpad Unresponsive
MacBook Pro Keyboard & TrackPad freeze! Totally Unresponsive!
MacBook Pro inbuilt Keyboard and Trackpad freeze when not connected to bluetooth devices?
I've crawled through some log files in /var/log (via the shell and through Console.app) and found a couple things that may be relevant, although they seem unrelated. Etiher way, I was surprised by what I found. All sorts of errors with regards to Bluetooth and USB stuff. I'm not aware of using either. I haven't used bluetooth in years and though I sometimes charge an iPod by USB, I haven't had any problems with that, and this keyboard/trackpad freeze has also happened on sessions where I started the laptop and never even touch the USB ports in the time leading up to the freeze.

  • Why does my Macbook pro keyboard and trackpad randomly become unresponsive forcing restart in OSX Mavericks?

Randomly when using OSX Mavericks, since installing yesterday, my mid-2012 Macbook Pro keyboard and trackpad freeze and become unresponsive.
The computer is still running whatever I was doing, the computer does not crash, i just cannot control it and the only way I have found as a fix is to restart.
This never happened in Mountain Lion.
    Can anyone help?

    Very similarly.
Mac Mini late 2012. i7 CPU, 16GB ram. 12GB unused.
After installing Mavericks, it seems to grind my system to a halt. It is still running (I can move the cursor and activity monitor updates processes) but every application I try to launch results in a colorful waiting sign. It even can take a minute or more before an application shows "any" sign of starting.
I tried to open a terminal session (so I could manually kill a process) but the terminal session did not even process. It timed out after 5 minutes.
Acitivity monitor shows 90-95% idle and I have no idea what's causing it.
I have already rebuild disk and reset permissions (all seemed fine) 3 times.
I've rebooted over 8 times since last night. I cannot use my Mac anymore reliably.
    Please help.

  • Help! my GS3 keyboard randomly becomes unresponsive

It's fine for days or weeks then randomly locks up...either the keyboard doesn't even appear or its just unresponsive. I've googled the topic but seems like i'm all alone with this one. Does anybody have a solution? I've downloaded another keyboard app which works right now but the return and menu buttons also act up periodically.

        Hi RJBoud
That's a very odd situation. Let's look into this together. The issue may be caused by a third party application. Please try powering the device in safe mode and retest. Here's how:http://bit.ly/Wvg2zd
Please let me know if the issue persists. I would be happy to further troubleshoot.

  • Keyboard and trackpad randomly become unresponsive

Every few hours or so my keyboard and/or trackpad just stop working. Once I either shut my computer to put it to sleep or restart it, it's fine for a few more hours. Therefore I don't think it's a hardware issue (I've tried pressing on the orange cable underneath the battery and that doesn't seem to do anything). Anybody have any suggestions?

  • Macbook Air Trackpad And Keyboard Unresponsive!! PLEASE HELP!

Hello everyone, a while ago (about 2 months) my Macbook air started having troubles with its trackpack and keyboard. At random times they would become unresponsive and just stop working. They would work for like 1 second when the computer turns on but then it would stop. A couple weeks ago the problem stopped occuring the keyboard and trackpad were working fine and dandy. Of course until last night, I open the computer and the trackpad and keyboard won't work.. The keyboard lights are on and the power button works but nothing else does it is extremely frustrating! I did an SMC reset which worked for like 5 minutes until it stopped working again. I have done a NVRAM reset nothing, I have done everything that I have seen but I need a fix for this! The mac is running OS X 10.9.3 and I am pretty sure that is the latest. Please help me guys I am really getting frustrated with this undying problem ;/

you don't need to disassemble your device.
    4 days is a lot.
maybe rust has already been created.

  • T410 won't boot, blank screen and keyboard unresponsive at power up.

Hi, my Lenovo T410 laptop won't start. I hit the power button and it looks like it's about to boot up. The thinklight blinks on as normal, the cd drive is checked, the caps lock button blinks on, then nothing. No display, and keyboard is unresponsive. Power light remains on; if I leave it a while the fan comes on. I can turn the machine off using the power button, but the problem remains next time I switch it on.
I've tried removing power and battery, pressing power button 10 times then holding power for 30 secs, before replacing power and battery, but nothing happens. I've tried using a different keyboard. I've tried plugging in an external monitor. No change.
This problem appeared after I left it on overnight. I have a hunch that it went into hybernation mode, perhaps, and that it disrupted some important function which it was unable to complete. Not sure though. Any help gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    Pete
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi, Fn+F7 didn't do anything.
So I took out the HDD and both RAM modules, including the one under the keyboard. At power on it beeped as follows: 1 beep, followed by 2 series of 3 beeps, followed by 1 beep.
I replace the HDD and one ram module under the keyboard leaving the other one out - this didn't change anything; I then switched up the RAM modules - again, no change. Does this mean the motherboard and processor are OK? What could the problem possibly be in this case? Very mysterious!
Incidentally, I should perhaps have mentioned that I kept the unit in an unheated room and it did get very cold there a few days ago, which coincides with when the booting problem first appeared.

  • Keyboard unresponsive when opening from sleep

Whenever I close my macbook pro, running tiger os x 10.4, the keyboard is unresponsive, I can't type anything, and I have to restart. Is this normal? How can I fix it?

No, it's not normal. Sounds like you ran Software Update without running the “Disk Utility” afterwards. For whatever reason, Apple doesn't include the "Repair Permissions" as part of the download process. Anywho, here is the drill so maybe it will help.
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions

  • HP Pavilion Elite E9240F randomly becomes unresponsive.

    Hello,
I've had this computer for only about 1 or 2 years and it recently started to have this unresponsiveness problem. I'm able to move around my mouse and if I'm talking to people on Teamspeak or Skype I'm able to still talk to them but I can't open or close anything. There are no hardware changes but I noticed it started to happen when I updated my graphics card from Steam. Also it's random, I can be doing nothing and if I try to open Google Chrome it won't open until the computer becomes responsive again. I really need help!
Thank you for your time and I hope this can be resolved!

    Hi..
This could be due to the incompatibility of your desktop and the graphics card.
Check out for the motherboard specs and the graphics card if they are compatible or no.
Also there is a CODE PURPLE scene in all HP PC's, where if the PC's would lock itself or become slow if the original configuration of the desktop is changed.
Also this could be due the power supply your graphics card is shharing from the motherboard.
If the motherboard does not support the graphics card the PC would work slow because your graphics card is exceeding the power capacity.
Also this could be due to the high usage of the PC. You can increase the system processing memory (RAMs), and the PC would get some more memory to divide the work on.
Clicking Kudos! Is a nice way to say Thank You if this helped you or resolved your problem. Also " Accept It As A Solution" so that others get a benefit from it..

  • 2011 Macbook pro Keyboard Unresponsive

    Hi,
I have a 2011 17" Macbook Pro. I'd left it in a cupboard - working - for a few months, as I got an iPad and didn't use it so much.
Now, when I try to use it, the keyboard is moreorless totally unresponsive. I can use a bluetooth keyboard.
The only keys that seem to work (occasionally) are the 0 key - but this is registers as F9, and P and -. Sometimes when I press 1 of these keys, i can see from the on screen keyboard that it thinks all 3 are being pressed and held.
I know this seems like a hardware issue, but I'm really hoping someone can tell me it's not. I can't do a SMC reset at the buttons won't press.
    Any ideas?

    Hi DanBrown180,
Based on the information you have provided, it appears your MacBook Pro needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • Keyboard unresponsive?

After Firefox (v 37) has been running for a while, keyboard becomes unresponsive. Mouse still works. Other programs (including other browsers) work fine. Reboot fixes problem temporarily. Running Mac OS X (10.6.8).

Please make sure that version 37 is up to the latest beta version. And make sure that all updates to the operating system and drivers had been made.
The previous situation I saw was a user who had a keyboard plugin installed that was no longer compatible, are there any third party software that acts as a keyboard?

Maybe I hit some sort of keyboard command combination that set it as locked?
    Thanks, Shellie
