Random loss of Exposé functionality

Hi,
it's rather weired and happens only on this machine (the 12") so I guess I post here before moving this question over to the Leopard forum.
Randomly (maybe about once a month) Exposé just stops working and the only cure is a restart.
Any ideas ?
Thanks a lot,
Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Check the hard disk for errors. Restart your Mac while holding down the C key, pressing the power button and inserting your restore disk all at the same time. An Installer window will open, but do not proceed with any installations. Instead, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the Disk Utility window click First Aid, and then click Verify. If Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Go to System Preferences/Expose and Spaces/Expose and see if your keyboard and mouse shortcuts have changed.
Insufficient disk space can cause system corruption.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.

  • Vist Basic & XFI, random loss of sound and World of Warcraft Hardware enabling iss

Hello.. First off want to say that prior to reinstalling Vista last week, I had no had any issues with my XFI and Vista.. Since the re-install, while running World of Warcraft and Ventrillo, I get random loss of sound. And by that, specifically I mean, the sound shuts off, and I get a constant loud hiss noise that does not stop until a reboot is performed. If I just run WoW and no Ventrillo, I dont get the random problem and the sound runs fine. It is however a highly annoying issue that requires too many reboots in evening. Getting to the point of just trying the onboard sound, which I'd certainly rather not do.
Additionally there is an option in WoW that allows for Hardware enabling, which is supposed to improve performance. When I check this box and restart the game, the box is still not checked. Not sure if this is a CL problem, but something is wrong for sure! I'm using the latest drivers that are on creativelabs.com for my Vista 32 bit system. And again, didnt have these issues prior to the fresh re-install of Vista. Before that I had stepped up the drivers all the way from Vista. Thanks for any feedback on this.

Not sure why your sound is cutting out... but as for WoW, it needs ALchemy installed to run with hardware audio enabled under Vista. I dont believe its in the list of titles included with ALchemy just yet, but adding it manually with the default options works just fine. Without doing this I believe the new sound core used in WoW will automatically detect that it cannot do hardware audio and simply uncheck the box whenever you try, where-as before it would work but still give you Software rendered sound (only instead of WoWs audio engine doing it, it was Vistas - not exactly an improvement). Incidentally, this not only improves performance but vastly improves the sound quality - especially when excessive numbers of sounds are being played. (eg Mass AoE effects on larger numbers of mobs, such as two Warlocks Hellfiring along with a Hurricane and Consecration while pulling the Ballroom - 9 mobs per group - near Moroes in Karazhan) Its possible doing this may also correct your cut-out issue, but its possible it wont. Ive been running WoW alongside Vent for months now under Vista w/ALchemy and an X-Fi and never had such a problem, but then I do also run Vent off the onboard audio so I can use a small earpiece and have voices clearly audible through game sound.

  • All USB ports seem to stop working "randomly" but some remain functioning until unplugged and plugged back in. [WINDOWS 8.1]

The devices that die right away are the network adapter and any USB memory stick plugged in, they still have their lights and all running but aren't recognized in "This PC" and the network adapter isn't found in "Control Panel\Network and
    Internet\Network Connections".
My keyboard, wireless mouse that runs through the keyboard's USB ports and the external HDD remains functional UNTIL I pull the plug on them, after that plugging them back in does nothing.
I put randomly in quotations because it seems to fail more often when I download something at speeds over 3Mb/s, for an example downloading Hearthstone through the Battle.Net client will more often than not make the issue happen after a little bit. BUT it still
happens randomly during NO network load what-so-ever.

**I never had any of these issues on my old PC that had different parts but the same network adapter and external HDD so they are not to blame for this, same for keyboard and mouse.**

Hey, I hope this helps you out a bit... I have had the same issue on my Asus K55A notebook with Win8.1 Pro x64 from the beginning! Thru my extensive research I found something interesting and the possible cause to all this! What I found was that by design
the xHCI Host Controller has virtual HS 2.0 Ports linked to the 3.0 Ports... Enabling compatibility with 2.0 devices ok... What happens is that the xHCI stack is unstable just like you say... The ONLY WAY I was able to fix the problem was by unlocking the
UEFI/BIOS to allow me full access to USB Configurations... I had to disable 2 of the HS ports under the xHCI Controller since I have only 2x 3.0 ports... This allowed 3.0 devices to be enumerated correctly under the xHCI stack and 2.0 devices now were enumerated
under the EHCI 2.0 stack... That's what worked in my case... I'm still digging around for more info about this issue because I find it so odd that no one discovered this when designing xHCI stacks and drivers at MS for Win8/8.1 x64... I hope I shed some light
on this issue... Good luck and keep us posted!
Hi, Sebastian. I have the same problem but i'm getting crazy trying to solve it. Can you help me to unlock the UEFI to access full USB config? and give me some suggestions on how to solve the problem?

  • LED Cinema Display 27 Random Loss of USB

I have a brand new 27" LED Cinema display connected via Mini Display Port to my 2006 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card.  The display's USB cable is connected to a USB port on the back of the Mac Pro.  My keyboard is the newest Apple extended keyboard (wired) that is plugged into the back of the monitor.
The problem is that randomly (about one out every 8 boots but with no pattern or rhyme-or-reason), I have no USB connectivity from the keyboard.  I am unable to enter my user name and password to log in.  While it is in this state I have pulled the monitor's USB cable from the back of the Mac Pro, waited 15 seconds or so and then plugged it back in.  This does not fix the problem.  The only solution so far is to force shut down the computer using the power button on the front of the Mac Pro, then disconnect the monitor's power cable, plug the monitor's power cable back in and re-boot.  So far 100% success with this process.  Somehow removing power from the monitor resets its USB bus.  I just don't think I should have to do this once or twice a week... or more.
So I have a solution but it is a pain in the rear and involves crawling under my desk.  I could try plugging the keyboard directly into the Mac Pro and abandon all use of the USB ports on the back of the monitor but would hate to give up functionality that I paid for.
This only occurs on boot... I have never lost USB connectivity while the computer is running if it boots and works properly... even after sleep.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Norby

I installed Mountain Lion last night. Playing around a bit before going to bed I noticed that my keyboard seemed to fade in and out, sometimes what I typed showed up, sometimes not. This morning I was using Messages, tried the camera. First I got a warning saying no camera was attached to Mac (built in iSight?!?!?!). The unplug/plug method didn't address this. Restarted Mac Pro, camera showed up but there was major lag, like it was someone's video sent to me from a bad connection not locally streaming video! Also, graphical anomalies kept popping up in the video. (a note: none of this was happening with my MBP with FaceTime camera after ML install)
    And then it hit me.
Due to the short span of the mini display cable on the LED Display, I have to use an extension cord for the MiniDisplay and USB. Removing the MiniDisplay extension cured my video issues. I removed the USB extension and put in place another USB hub testing my previous post. So far, with keyboard and Wacom plugged into the Displays USB, no issues. It's early though so who knows. I wouldn't mind trying a straight connection to a Mac Pro USB but Apple has made the cable far too short and working with my head next to the tower just isn't desired.

  • Left side of iPad mini had randomly begun to not function properly.

    Hello guys,
Recently, I have encountered a bizzare issue with my iPad mini's touch screen. The left side (portrait orientation) has begun to not function as expected. Namely, random taps occur while my own taps are not registered on the left side, while the right side is just fine. What is most interesting is that this distance from the left side is fixed at precisely 2cm.
Now, I know that this question has been asked about a hundrend times already, but, strangely enough in my case a reboot DOES fix the issue, temporarily anyway. After about 2-6 hours later, the problem reoccurs. This has led me to believe that it is a software issue and not a hardware one, although, that is hard to believe. I installed iOS 7 not too long ago but it has been working just fine (no touch screen bugs on iOS 6.1 whatsoever). Unfortunately, my warranty has expired about 2 weeks ago, with the problem occuring last week, therefore asking at Apple Support is impossible.
Does anyone have any ideas on what this is, and/or how to fix it?
    Any support/question/solution is appreciated.
Ps. I will add pictures showing the unresponsiveness of the display if requested. Drawing a line appears as multiple taps on the left side while right side is still a line.

        •    Touch screen not responding
        •    Application unexpectedly closes or freezes

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation. They may work with you on the warranty issue, if the iPad does not show any evidence of being dropped.

  • Ipad 3: Random Loss of Control (Screen Touches)

I usually consider myself smart enough to resolve issues through research and trial and error.  This however is an issue that is beyond me.  I recieved my iPad 3 on the 19th of March and have been using it since.  Mostly for comic book readers, PDF files and games.  Roughly 2 hours ago, the screen started registering random clicks and slides making control fo the device impossible.  I hard resetted (Holding power/home method), restoring, and just regular soft power off.  All of which seem to resolve the issue for a few minutes.  After some online research, I learned that a quick lock/unlock will resolve it faster than full power cycling, but the issue still returns after a few minutes of use.  This makes me reframe from opening apps that could make purchases randomly; since I have no idea when the issue will spark.
My question is; do I need to drive an hour to the closest Apple Store to have them resolve this issue or am I missing something?  Any assistance would be appreciative as that sorta drive isn't a good idea for someone in my condition.  I'd take it back to my local retailer, except it was purchased straight from the Apple Store.  I'm not sure why it started all of a sudden, I did download a few apps today (ARCreader, Cloudviewer and Icomix Pro for Iphone), I'm going to be removing all but cloudreader as the others don't support the features I need.  But none are running in the background so I can't see them causing the issue itself.  Thank you for your time.
Side Note:  I have an iPad 1st gen, with all the same applications installed and no issue, iOS 5.1 installed on both devices.

    Try Barry's suggestion first.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • Random numbers in sumproduct function

how is a random list or range  of  values entered?     thanks.     don mattern

I could be wrong, but I do not believe numbers has the power to make matrix calculations.  I might suggest excel if that is an option.
This is how I would say that you need to do matrix multiplication.  I am going to assume you know all the rules for multiplying matrices.  First you need to have 4 separate tables with no header rows, no footer rows, nor header columns.
I will demonstrate with a (3x3)(3x3).  The first two tables are the Matrices that you are multiplying.
    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7
    8
    9
    9
    8
    7
    6
    5
    4
    3
    2
    1
The third is the Transpose of Table 2.  In row 1 column A, place this formula =INDEX(TRANSPOSE(Table 2::$A$1:$C$3),ROW(),COLUMN()), and then fill it all the way out. And this is your result:
    9
    6
    3
    8
    5
    2
    7
    4
    1
Now in the fourth table, in row 1 column A place this formula: =SUMPRODUCT(OFFSET(Table 1::$A$1,ROW()−1,0,1,3),OFFSET(Transpose of Table 2::$A$1,COLUMN()−1,0,1,3)) and fill out to the rest of the table.
    30

    18
    84
    69
    54
    138
    114
    90
This is a slight doozy, but I will explain when I have it written up in a few.

  • Loss of Photoshop functionality after update

Yesterday I updated  Photoshop as suggested in a message on my Creative Cloud.  Since the update, much of the functionality inside of Photoshop has been lost from the cloning tool, filters e.g. Camera Raw, saving the file etc etc.  I repeatedly get the message "Could not complete your request because of a program error."  Prior to the update I had no issues with running Photoshop CC on my computer.
    System:  IMAC
    Operating System : OS 10.8.3
Graphics : AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MG
    Memory : 16 GB
I have uninstalled and reinstalled from Cloud ... to no avail and after a day of reading forums and trying many different options I just cannot get to the bottom of the problem.
Can anyone advise how do I revert back to the version before the update.  Everything worked perfectly fine in that version.
    Thank you

Thank you Mylenium for your quick response.
Ran the cleaner tool and reinstalled.  Everything seemed to work for about 5 minutes and now it is again back to my original porblem with the "Could not complete your request because of a program error".
So unfortunately I am back to square 1 trying to find a solution.

  • Panning issues and seemingly random loss of all audio. ***.

i've been using logic for a few years now, and i just created a new project exactly as i've done about 30+ times.... only for some reason none of the pan settings on the individual tracks are working.  the pan dial looks just like it normally does, except everything is mono, straight down the gorramn middle.  the one track that will allow panning is the output 1-2 track (and probably the master, although i didn't really mess with that one), but i don't think that having the entire audio field set slightly to the side will make this sound very great.
also, i'm losing all audio for what seems an awful lot like no reason at all.  i press play and i can see everything moving as it should. each channel is doing it's thing and seems to be receiving, processing, and sending a signal, but i'm getting nothing in the headset.  i had to restart logic to regain audio.
i appreciate any and all help, and i realize that the fault probably lies in my court as usual.
    thanks

@pancenter - nope. that is still checked.
@chorleyman - out 1-2 is still in stereo, and now i've switched all the individual tracks to stereo just to be sure, but it doesn't seem to be helping.  let me describe my project a bit more.... i've got six guitar tracks, and all of them being bused to an aux.  that aux won't pan either, although if i hard pan it L or R and then hard pan an individual guitar track in the opposite direction, i hear nothing from that track.
i've got one vox track bused to another aux. same story there.
and i've also got two software instruments (a kick and a snare) that go straight to out1-2, and those won't pan either.
let's see... other equipment... not a very extensive list.  for recording i used a usb guitar cable which i don't have plugged in for the mixdown, although the panning issues began before i unplugged that.
other than that i have some headphones plugged into the headphone jack on the mac.
regarding the loss of audio, i've gotten this message a few times, although it didn't pop up the first couple times i lost audio so i'm not sure the answer lies here:
Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI.
    Sample Rate 42098 recognized.
Check conflict between Logic Express and external device.
thanks to both of you for responding!

  • Windows 8 - Random loss of network

Hello! I posted the following in the community forums and it was recommend may I post this here as well..
    Hoping someone can help!
I have been battling an issue with a PC we have that will randomly loose its network.
    HP PC running Windows 8
    RTL8168 (Latest 8.26 drivers - static IP) >ZyXEL 48PT > Edgemax Lite > Cable Modem
This PC runs some network intensive tasks, on average it is receiving 150mb of data but that can spike. Usually what happens is every couple of days the network will just "stop".  At first I thought it had something to do with the network
driver, so I updated it. Then I disable IPv6, then I disabled anything that mentioned power management in relation to the realtek device. Uninstalled Avast and enabled Defender. Nothing I have done appears to fix the issue.
When the network stops, it no longer receives connections and I cannot for instance, ping the router nor network switch. At first I thought I was looking at port exhaustion but my service ports go from 100 to 110 on average while working to 20 when the issue
is present. I can see when it starts because within event viewer I see DNS errors that are generated from my script trying to email me telling me the system is down (Name resolution for the name smtp.gmail.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers
responded.). When I had the wifi adapter enabled just for the fun of it, I noticed it would constantly drop and would see DHCP issues when this even was taking place. I have re-disabled the wifi adapter so this is not part of the issue just an interesting
note that it seems to be affected by it as well.
When this happens I can still remotely connect to the router through the web, I can connect to the ZyXEL switch, I can connect to other PCs on the network remotely and have no issues. I run a script that pings the network switch every 5 minutes. If it receives
a reply from it quits, if it receives anything else it will flag itself as being in an error state and the next time it runs if the connection is still not present it will reboot the PC which is the only way I have found to fix this issue.
I had it run netstat and ipconfig before the shutdown command and noticed the local connections that generate all the traffic (which I can connect to on other machines) will stay in a SYN_SENT state.  Ipconfig looks like it should and doesn't display
    any obvious issues.
Unfortunately because I am never there physically when it happens I haven't been able to try pulling the network cord or to try disable/enable and seeing what happens. The systems needs to stay up so I can't leave it in this state to try these things.
The one constant I can state it seems to be related to the amount of traffic being passed through, which is kind of why I thought port exhaustion. If I enable a specific backup service related to the traffic being generated it will happen every night vs
every couple days. So more traffic means quicker issue.
I have scoured the Internet for the past week and see related issues with windows 7 and windows 8.1 - I can't seem to find a resolution though, hoping someone has more things to try before I upgrade to 8.1 and see if that fixes anything.

An update I suppose.. I tried to uninstall the drivers and reinstall the HP drivers. This ended badly.
Lost the Ethernet adapter all together with a Code 10 - then I uninstalled the HP drivers basically rolling it back to zero and it wouldn't say Code 10 but the network adapter showed network cable unplugged. A combination of trying last known good drivers,
deleting all drivers from the driver store, etc resulted in the same two scenarios.
I bit the bullet and updated to 8.1 and the system loaded with the base drivers. Still showed Code 10. I clicked on update and allowed the device to update via windows update, rebooted, still Code 10.
I went into the BIOS - enabled and re-disabled power saving mode. Made no other changes, rebooted and it is now working with whatever drivers Windows Update installed.
Very odd experience for me, I am now in a holding pattern to wait and see if the whole reason for all of this is still an issue or not.

  • Random loss of sound on X200...getting on my nerves!

    Hi,
I have an X200 with windows XP running SP2 and I'm experiencing a rather odd problem that I cannot solve (i am usually quite good at solving PC problems!).
When I start the laptop the sound works fine but after a random amount of time it dissapears. I cannot narrow it down to any applications that I use. I can be listening to an mp3 and it will suddenly lose the sound, or I can be on youtube and the sound drops.
It does not work again until I restart the PC.
This is what I have tried so far.
    1. Uninstall the driver and let windows install it again
    2. Installed the latest driver from the website
    3. Played around with the sound services in "services.msc".
    4. And before you suggest it...the volume is not on mute.
    5. Many many other things from installing microsoft updates to generic drivers...nothing works.
It happens without fail every time i turn the pc on. The sound can dissappear after 1 minute or sometimes 2 hours...but it WILL dissapear eventually. All signs on the computer says it should still be working. Device manager shows the soundcard as working, the volume controls are there and everything works, but there is no sound until I restart.

  • Wrt610n firmware upgrade v1.00.03 B15 and subsequent loss of mediaserver functionality on xbox

Okay, this is going to take a while to explain, but if you can stick with me to the end and have a helpful suggestion, you will be my hero.
I have today upgraded the firmware on my wrt610n router from the FW_WRT610N_1.00.00.18_20080816_code.bin which is version v1.00.00 B18 to the most recent FW_WRT610N_1.00.03.15_20090514.bin which is version 1.00.03 B15.  Since this upgrade, the UPnP media server of the wrt610n router will not function with the xbox 360, nor with the Windows Media Player. It still works on the PS3 though...hmmm...the plot thickens.
Both of these features worked just fine before the upgrade.  On the xbox, the wrt610n:mediaserver would show up as a selectable source when going into the Video, Music, or Picture libraries.  Similarly, Windows Media Player would recognize the UPnP mediaserver as a source for streaming showing up as wrt610n:mediaserver.  I have a PS3 and sure enough, the wrt610n:mediaserver was a selectable source there as well.  All was good (mediaserver wise).  Why did I upgrade at all? you may ask.  That is a whole different story regarding a host of other non-media server issues with the NAS functionality, transfer speeds, and a few other problems that I won't go into any further.
Now let me explain the steps I've taken and some of the knowledge I have about this, so you don't think that I haven't done my research.  I disconnected the USB hard drive (I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop 500GB external hd) before attempting anything.  I also disconnected my laptop from Wi-Fi and ethernet-hardwired him into the router.  After the successful flash of the firmware to 1.00.03 B15,  I did a hard reset of the router.  This was done by holding the reset button for 30 seconds.  I let the router "bootup" and also let the laptop acquire a LAN connection.  Internet connection was successful.  I then unplugged the router and waited for about 30 seconds and then plugged it back in and again my laptop acquired a connection all the way through to the internet.  I checked the xbox at this point, hardwired him into the router and was able to sign in to xbox live.  Going good so far.
I plugged my USB hard drive into my laptop and deleted .storage_info hidden file to start from scratch with storage configuration.  I did NOT attempt to restore a saved backup configuration of my previous settings on the router as this can cause problems (especially with the mediaserver stuff).  I downloaded the Seagate drive manager software onto my PC and ran a quick diagnostic to check the hard disk.  This was successful.  I also used the software to change the power save mode timer on the hard drive to Never, so it would never go to low-power standby.  I did this because there were issues with version 1.00.02 B10 (the firmware I skipped (another long story)) where the nas functionality will only work up until the period of time of inactivity that initiates low power standby.  Once in standby, the router cannot wake it back up and the drive will appear disconnected until you unplug and re-plug the hard disk USB port.  Not a usable solution.
Anyways, at this point the USB hard disk was ready for the router.  I safely disconnected it from my laptop, and plugged it into the router.  The router recognized the hard drive after a few seconds.  I created a user with the same name as my Windows logon and same password, assigned to the Admin group and I tried creating a share of the entire partition and linked that share to the admin group.  This is for easier time logging into the share when it is a mapped network drive and reconnecting at logon.  This was all successful.
Now comes the media server (remember, everything is still hardwired).  I went to the media server sub tab under Storage and enabled UPnP and saved settings.  I then went into Specify Folder to Scan and chose the Music folder and assigned the name as "music" and created it.  That folder then appeared as a "folder to scan".  At that point I saw that the hard drive was "working" which tells me that the mediaserver was indexing the contents for later streaming.  When the drive stopped its I/O work, I tried looking for the mediaserver as a source in both the xbox and Windows media player, but to no avail.  This is the crux of my problem.  The mediaserver is not showing up in either interface for me to choose it to stream content.  However, when I tried to find it on the PS3, it was there!  I was able to use the mediaserver on the PS3 and it streamed the music like a champ.  It showed up as a source called WRT610N.  You can get some information from the PS3 and I see the ip address and manufacturer is PacketVideo and the Model is TwonkyMedia.  I went back to the xbox and Windows Media Player, but it was still not there.  **bleep**!  I tried manually forcing a scan of the contents in the firmware, but that didn't help.
Now I realize that twonkyvision is the 3rd party media server for wrt610n routers.  We also used to be able to access the twonkyvision web interface by going to port 9000 (example: http://192.168.1.1:9000/ ), but that access was taken away by the previous firmware release v1.00.02 B10.  I used to get that "twonkyvision license is expired" crap a while ago (another long story).  This access is still gone in this most recent firmware release.
My hypothesis is that the newer TwonkyMedia server has used a UPnP standard that neither the xbox, nor Windows Media Player support right now, but the PS3 does.  I will most likely have to go back to my previous working version of the router firmware unless one of you brave souls can help.
And there you have it.  Any takers?!
