Random lost Airport connection

Have a Linksys WRT54G router with a WRE54G booster, with a good signal seen on several laptops. One, an 867 G4 15in P-book randomly looses its ability to find my network. Putting it to sleep or rebooting "finds" the network re-listed in the Airport choices. Sometimes, it will not show the network at all, despite other laptops running fine. When the network isn't seen, attempts to enter it as a new "Other" consistently fail. Up to date on OS X and Airport software. Using WEP key, SSID on router and booster puposely different (recommended by others). This only happens on the one laptop. Help!

Thought it was fixed, but not so fast. Problem recurred, not always reparable by Sleep then Wake. Tried Disk Utility, Diskwarrior, then even re-installed 10.4 and re-updated to 10.4.8 (without saving Network prefs). Still have this problem - the computer seems to be "blind" to my network, but can be nudged (most of the time) by Sleep and Wake. Re-boot even requires Sleep/Wake. Could this be a hardware issue? Dying Airport card?

  • Intel iMac keeps randomly dropping Airport connection

My Intel Duo core iMac keeps randomly dropping its Airport connection. It never used to do this until a few months ago. The Airport menu bars randomly show half grey, or all grey, and either I have to turn Airport on/off from the menu to get all the bars back to black, or sometimes they just come back on.
Logically, I guess it can only be three things, a problem in the (a) Intel iMac (eg. airport card), (b) my Airport Express Base station, or (c) my ADSL 2+ NetComm modem router. Now, fortunately I have a first generation white G5 iMac set up side by side to help diagnose the problem. When the Intel iMac airports bars go half grey or all grey, the Airport bars on the white G5 iMac stay black or at worst show one grey bar.
At face value, I guess this points to the Intel iMac itself being the problem? Or could it be that the Airport Express Base station is the problem, and the Intel iMac is more sensitive to the problem than the white G5 iMac? I'm sort of leaning to the Airport Base station as the problem because when the Intel iMac drops out, the white G5 coincidentally drops out albeit by only one grey bar generally.
Its quite annoying because its so unpredictable and intermittent. My Intel iMac has full Applecare, but I would feel stupid to haul it into Apple only for them to say I wasted their time and the problem must be the Airport Base station/modem router.
    All comments welcome!

Well, for what its worth, I'll give you the update to my problem. The Apple technician said during all their testing, my Intel iMac never dropped the Airport connection once - and the problem might be some interference between the iMac and the Airport Express unit. That didn't quite make sense because my white G5 iMac seems fine; the occasional variable signal but not a full drop out. Anyway, the technician said he applied a 'few software updates' - although I don't know what these updates were, especially since I always apply Apple public updates as they are released.
Now, when I got my Intel iMac back about a week ago, I am very happy to say the dropout/weak signal problem appears to be no more (touch wood). Thus, I don't know what was done, but it has seemingly fixed things so far.
Would anyone know what updates Apple might have applied - and I assume its something that is not readily available to the public, since I always keep an eye on public software updates.

  • Lost Airport Connection after sleep/shutdown

    Hi there,
I have spent a goodly part of this weekend trying to solve this problem, the time has now come to seek assistance from someone who might know what they are doing!
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, it is connected to an ADSL ethernet router and then to the ADSL phone line. My G5 connects directly to the router via ethernet. My G3 iBook has an airport card and, sometimes anyway, connects to the internet via the base station.
The problem I have been having is that whenever the iBook goes to sleep it loses its Airport connection and to get it back again takes forever switching Airport on and off, going into Internet connect, changing around the TCP/IP settings etc. I eventually get the connection back (with the original settings), but it's becoming a real pain. The same thing happens after a restart or shutdown, it doesn't automatically connect to Airport and takes forever to get it to. A lot of the time the Base Station doesn't show up as an available network, then all of a sudden it will after various tweakings.
I have checked the airport card and it is positioned correctly. The fact that it occassionally recognises the Base Station makes me think also that the card is OK. So my question is, how can I keep the darn thing connected? I feel there is something simple I am missing.
Incidently, this began happening after I had set it up to print through the Base Station, that only worked for a short period of time. I have since get rid of all those settings.
Hope I have given enough information.
    Cheers

  • Randomly slow Airport connection on MacBook C2D

    Hi.
Seems I am lucky because my brand new MacBook C2D can connect to WiFi access points!
I have a "surprising issue" though : after a few minutes of connection, the connection gets very very slow.
If I turn Airport off then back on, it all goes back to normal .... for a few minutes
My MacBook is uptodate, with AirPortExtremeUpdate2007001 installed.
I spent over an hour with Applecare Today, but the issue is still there.
We zapped the P-Ram, moved the "SystemConfiguration" folder to the desktop, restarted the router several times with no lasting effect.
The access point is a Netgear DG 834 GT, configured with WPA security and an access list, on an occupied WiFi channel. 3 other Macs (2 MacBook Core Duo, 1 MacBook Pro 17 Core Duo) and one Sony Vaio connect to it without any problem.
The MacBook C2D can connect to my home network (powered by a 802.11g Airport Extreme) at full speed without any issue either.
Should I buy an Ethernet cable, wait for the next Airport update ?
Does anyone experience the same kind of issue ?
    Thanks un advance.

I have the exact same problem you are describing. Randomly, I experience EXTREMELY slow connections. Sometimes the connection is so slow it seems I am not connected. I have had this problem since I bought my MacBook C2D in the fall. This problem has occurred at many different access points, including my netgear router, coffee shops, and several different universities.
My husband owns a MacBook Pro, and sometimes we will be side by side on our computers, which supposedly have the same software (I am running 10.4.8 and currently have all the updates as does he), same processor, and he never has trouble with his wireless connection. So it is definitely my computer, not the routers.
I have called Apple support twice to descirbe the problem. They suggested I send the computer in to get the airport card replaced. At this moment my wireless is working. However, this is the first time since yesterday morning that it has worked. I don't think apple will replace the card unless the problem can be reproduced. And the problem seems to be entirely random.
I would be very happy if someone figures out what is wrong.
    Thanks.

  • Lost airport connection to my emac

I have an airport extreme with a new intel imac and an older emac working off it. It had been doing fine then the suddenly the emac no longer works. when i try to connect to the wireless network the internet connect program freezes. the Imac is still doing fine. the icon for the airport is not in the menu bar of the emac but the card is read by the system profiler. i have disconnected the card and reconnected it. i have rebooted all the modems and routers but the system prefference network sstatus still says "airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet". any ideas?
    emac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Try the following, in order, on the eMac until resolved:
    1a. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list
    1b. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
    - Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
    - Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
    - Restart, or log out then back in.
    1c. Add Preferred Network(s)
    - System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Configure
    - In the "By default, join:" pull-down menu, select "Preferred networks"
    - Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
    - Restart or log out then back in.
    2. Run the Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions.
    3. Turn off the Mac OS X Firewall
    - System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall
    - Click the "Stop" button.
    4. Move System Configuration Files
(Note: You will have to reestablish your network connections settings.)
    - Go to /Library/Preferences
    - Move the SystemConfiguration folder and com.apple.networkConfig.plist file to the desktop.
    - Restart your Mac. (Note: OS X will rebuild the files that are now sitting on your desktop. If this doesn't resolve the issue, you can move the folder & .plist file back to it's original location.)

  • Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X. Reset to factory settings and worked for 2 days then lost connection and remedied by unplugging power supply. Anyone else having problems?

Just purchased Airport Extreme ac and lost internet connection 3X in less than one week. Fisrt time, reset to factory settings and fixed problem. Has occurred 2 additional times and connection re-established by unplugging AP extreme. Anyone else having these problems?  Do I have a bad router?  Thanks.

I definitely think this is a Mavericks issue.  My iMac running Mavericks is the ONLY system in the house that drops the network randomly while all other systems never lose the network.  No idea how to resolve this, but here is the workaround I'm posting:
I've had the 'network drop' issue with my Airport Extreme for the last 2 months.  It reconnects when I pull the ethernet cable and plug it back in.  I've tried downgrading the AE firmware, resetting to factory, etc.  Nothing worked.  I finally threw in the towel and created a script that monitors my network connectivity and restarts my interface if it senses it has dropped:
    #!/bin/ksh
    while true
    do
      yup=`ping -c1 -t2 www.google.com|grep from`
      if [[ -n $yup ]]
         then echo "Internet is connected!"
      else
ifconfig en0 down; ifconfig en0 up
            echo "Down at `date +%m%d%Y%H%M%S`">>./dropped.out
      fi
      sleep 5
    clear
    done
I know its a workaround, but its saving me the headache of constantly pulling my cable and putting it back in!
    Good luck!

  • I seem to have lost some of my settings and now I cannot configure my airport connection. How do I get my settings back?

Hello. First time using this. Still trying to figure out how to post my questions. I seem to have lost some of my settings and now I cannot configure my airport connection. How do I get my settings back?

If you are using cable and a Nethear router sounds like from the information you provide before your Airport setting are setup improperly. PPoE is not something a cable service would need to work. Fallow the steps I will provide bellow, I will add some screen shots also to assist if necessary.
1 - Open System Preferences from  (Menu)
    2 - Click "Network"
3 - From the Network window you are going to wanna make sure Location is : Automatic and Show is : Airport
4 - Once the Show: Airport is select you should see a window like this, my window is selected for Ethernet simply because I am no longer running Tiger but the window will look the same.
5 - You will want to click on the PPPoE tab and you should see this
6 - You're gonna wanna make sure " connection using PPPoE " is not select, if it is make sure to uncheck this option
7 - Once this is uncheck make sure to click "Apply Now"
8 - You will want to click back on to the "TCP/IP" tab and make sure IPv4 is set to " Using DHCP "
9 - If the option to " Apply Now" is available again please click this
10 - Once this is done go to your Aiport Menu and see if your network is listed and select your network and eneter the password if necessary.
11 - If after these steps you still have issues I would recommend Power Cylcing your Router and Modem for about 5 minutes
12 - Make sure all lights are off when unplugging the Router and the Modem
13 - Some Modems have backup batterys so you may have to push in a tiny button on the back with a pin

  • I lost my connection when I was using internet and when I want to reconnect to airport it give me connection timeout error, I changed my password on router but still doesn't work. How can i fix my problem?

    Hi,
I lost my airport connection when I was using internet and when I wanted to re-reconnect to airport it gave me connection timeout error, I changed my password on router but still doesn't work. How can i fix my problem?

    Hello there hastibahreini,
It sounds like you were using your Wi-Fi network from your Airport base station and the connection cut out. You have reset the password on the device but the issue persists. I would try the 3 resets outlined in the following article in order to help resolve the issue. If it persists, is the Wi-Fi connection issue happening on more than one device or computer?

  • I lost my connection with my AirPort Base Station when I upgraded to the OS Maverick.  How can I get my system to recognize the base station again?

I lost my connection with my AirPort Base Station when I upgraded to the OS Maverick.  I can still see the Internet, but the Time Machine cannot backup now because it cannot locate the AirPort base station.  How can I resolve this issue?
Steps already taken with zero success:
    1. Restarted the AirPort Base Station multiple times.
    2. Restarted the Mac Pro multiple times.
    3. Looked online for AirPort update for 6.3.2 version.
Other Apple products in my house can still see the AirPort Base Station, however my Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro cannot.
    Please advise.

That information helps. If you want to use one of the SmartStor's disks as a repository for sharing your iTunes Library, then do not configure that disk as a RAID. Format it with Disk Utility using the Erase tab. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the correct choice.
Connect it to your Time Capsule, then use AirPort Utility to configure access requirements for sharing it on your network. It should appear as a shared volume in the Finder, available to all your Macs as you thought it should.
I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk.  It isn't.
Correct. There is no way to do that. The only way to increase the capacity of a Time Capsule's hard disk is to replace the Time Capsule (or its disk, if you are amenable to disassembling it) with a larger capacity model.
If you also want to use the SmartStor as a RAID, that is another story, and you should probably attack that problem separately.

  • AirPort Express over Ethernet lost the connection

I have an AirPort Express device. It's works well, if I connect it over WLAN. If I connect the AirPort Express over Ethernet via cable, then after about 15 minutes, I lost the connection between my PC and the AirPort Express.
Does I have to change settings in my router?

then when I try to switch it to extending
That is not the correct setting to use.
"Extending" is only used when an AirPort connects using a wireless connection to another AirPort router.
When the AirPort connects using Ethernet, you have to use the "Create a wireless network" setting.
It might be a lot easier if you simply start all over again and let the configuration "wizard" do most of the work for you. All that you really have to do is name the network, name the Express, enter the password and click Next.  Everything else is handled by the configuration utility.
Post back if you are not sure how to do this.

  • Lost airport express connection

I just changed my security settings on my extreme to WPA Personal in order to accomodate my PDA. In the process I lost my connection to my express (though my PDA now connects to my network) and now I can't seem to get my express back online. Any suggestions? Thanks

When you did the setup, did the assistant see the express? I'm guessing that it did since you said nothing about the assistant not seeing the unit. You may try that routine again with the express very close (at least the same room) but watch the lights. After setup the express will turn green but will shortly revert to amber for two blinks and then back to green. This is when it is really set. Also, during setup, did you tell it you wanted to use the unit for iTunes? This configuration should not be too trying since it is an all airport network. I'd give it a go again on the reset in close proximity. There certainly is such a thing as a bad unit but I don't think it is all that common. BTW, I suggest (if you have not done so) that you download the latest firmware for the extreme (5.7) and for the express (6.3). The last express I added asked if I wanted to download that update during setup. Try again and let us hear if it worked this time. You can use admin. if it sees the ubit but you say admin. doesn't even see it (remeber it will call it Aplle Network xxxx but if it shows there you can do the same thing. Just less that you need to know with assistant.

  • Lost wifi connection with Airport Extreme.

Lost wifi connection with Airport Extreme.   When I connect my modem directly to the computer I can access the internet, however as of this morning I am no longer able to access the internet via wifi on my airport extreme.  I have been using  airport extreme for 6 months or more and everything has been working fine.
When I diconnect my  airport extreme and reconnect it I get wifi for 1-2 minutes working fine, but then i lose internet connection.  According to airport Utility everything is setup and connected and working ok, but I still am not able to access any webpages over wifi.

  • Lost Airport internet connection between G5 and G3 iMacs

I hope you don't mind, I posted the following in internet etc. but not much traffic there...
I'm doing this from memory as not in front of either iMac. I have until now had a simple wireless internet connection as follows: G5 iMac connected by ethernet to broadband supplier which shares internet connection via Airport. This is picked up by an ethernet wireless router connected to my G3.
This has stopped working over the weekend. G3 had an amber light in network status (static DHCP address or similar) but that has now gone to green and 'connected to the internet' etc.
The internet sharing control on the G5 has full signal strength but seems to have difficulty checking status - revolving petal thingy below signal strength. But occasionally does settle on 'status fine' or similar.
Now the G3 fails to connect to the internet, G5 works just fine.
No settings have been knowlingly changed and all seem to be correct. There was a power failure for a couple of hours last week, don't know if this is related.
Thank you very much for your help.

Darrin, just back from Montreal and glad to see that great minds think alike. Often, in fact usually, problems with airport connections can be solved by rebooting the router/airport. For no apparent reason, they often go all funny, and this usually takes care of the problem,
anyway, glad you are back up and running,
    Miriam

  • Lost airport network share and print access - security update?

Roughly around the time I installed the last security update to my 10.3.9 iBook I lost Airport 802.11b access to printing services, afp and smb shares.
I still have internet services (email and web).
If I connect via fixed ethernet everything works.
    Any suggestions?

I fixed this, but I can't remember the full details. Sorry! I just wanted to mention there was a fix. I think I somehow tricked the system into forgetting all prior access and I rejoined the network.

  • Airport connected but can't get internet....PLEASE HELP!!!

I am a college student who went to college and used an apple airport base station for my mbp and everything worked fine, and before i went to school i used my parents linksys wireless router and it all worked fine. i came home from college today and used the internet (over the linksys router) for about 5 minutes, then came back a few hours later. after i came back my computer said i was connected via airport to the linksys router but i cant load any page at all with any internet browser, also aim and msn messenger wont work. when i get on the internet i get this message "safari can’t open the page “http://www.yahoo.com/”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message." i can connect if i plug my mbp in and i have tried the network diagnostics for airport several times, and it comes back saying that i am connected and it is all working fine, but its not. any help would be great. thanks.

I have the same problem...New MacBook Pro connects fine to Airport at home. Shows connected to WPA network at work but no Internet connectivity - or it takes a VERY long time to pull anything up. Have run the Network Diagnostics successfully and Mac thinks it is connected, but still not able to reach web sites.
Have followed instructions here: Article ID: 106799 Mac OS: Long Delay Before Web Pages Start to Load, Then Load Suddenly at Normal Speed without success. Can hardwire my MacBook Pro and use the network in this way.
I am a network admin and I set-up the wireless so I am familiar with the details, but am truly baffled why my Mac will not connect to the Internet.
