Random Mac OS X 10.6.5 Freezing

I have the most recent update to OS X and I am experiencing lots of freezing.
I have tried everything, including reinstalling, and still freezes. Mostly seen in safari but entire system constantly freezes.
Anyone have any idea how to fix?

10.6.5 freezes regularly for me too. The cursor remains responsive, and you can use the keyboard to change volume, etc, but that's about it. Apart from the cursor, the display is completely frozen, and I've found no way to recover except to force a restart.
I installed from the combo installer, as I always do.
I've had it crash while using other programs, not just Safari. Although now I think about it, Coda was the program I remember it crashing once in, and it uses Safari for its built-in browser. Plus Safari is almost always running, so it could be a factor. Might try running with Chrome for a while and see if things get better. (I'm using Safari 5.0.3)

  • Firefox v15 and up cause my computer (MAC OSX 10.8.2) to freeze for about 30 seconds every 15-30 seconds and forces me to turn it off with the power button

Firefox v15 and up cause my computer (MAC OSX 10.8.2) to freeze for about 30 seconds every 15-30 seconds and forces me to turn it off with the power button. It only causes this after I have opened Firefox, my computer runs fine before opening Firefox. I have uninstalled Firefox and cleared my personal settings. I have installed future updates (16 and 17) and have run into the same issue. I cannot pull any information on RAM or CPU usage because when it happens it makes my computer unusable. Unfortunately I need to use FF for work and can't. I have tried the different responses on the forums to reduce the amount of RAM and CPU usage with no change in performance.

  • I have an I mac with Lion and the curser freezes, what can be done.

I have an I mac with Lion and the curser freezes. It froze in Word, Safari, Iphoto, and photoshop, what can be done?.

4GB of RAM is not very much RAM these days particularly if you tend to have many windows open at one time. For example if you are working in Safari and have several tabs open and then work on a Photoshop project that will eat a lot of RAM. One simple way to check is open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and click the System Memory tab. Run this under typical use and check the amount of FREE RAM. It will look something like:
I can see from my example I am dangerously low on RAM by the amount of free RAM I have. I suspect if you upgrade to 8, 12 or even 16GB of RAM your machine would work much better. BTW ...my MacBook Air is limited to 4GB so it's up to me to manage my RAM better.

  • Random MAC address

    Hi,
My kids currently have 4th Gen iPod's and I have just upgraded them to 5th Gen for Christmas. Currently I can limit on my router their access to the internet with MAC address filtering and some simple rules that I can if needed change from anywhere in the world at any time, they have access available only at certain times. But with random MAC addresses I am not going to be able to do this.
How can I achieve the same level of control if I don't know what MAC address they have been assigned?
Thanks for any help you can offer, I have looked for apps to do this but with no luck!
    Thanks
    Tim

Have you looked at this app?

First month is free but then it is a subscription app.
Regarding MAC filtering. Without knowing the MAC address all you can do is restrict access to all users connected to the network

  • Random Mac Freezing

Hi This is my first time i have joined discussions.I am having random screen freezes which started rarely but it is now up to 8 times a day,my mac just is not the same is there anybody having the same problem.I am hoping its an easy fix but i have a feeling something really wrong any suggestions?

    try this:
restart your Mac and let it boot into _*safe mode*_. using *disk utility* (in applications > utilities), run +verify disk+ and +permission repair+ sessions, then let your Mac reboot normally.

  • I updated to Yosemite on my Mac. Firefox then began to freeze. I uninstalled Firefox and then downloaded/installed it again. How do I recover bookmarks, etc?

I updated to Yosemite on my iMac. Firefox then began to freeze. I uninstalled Firefox and then downloaded/installed it again. It's possible I uninstalled everything Mozilla related. I'm not sure. How do I recover bookmarks, passwords, etc? I don't believe I previously had a username & password for Mozilla. I do have my Mac backed up in Time machine and also a Carbon Copy Clone.
Also, I was able to migrate setting from Safari. Perhaps I don't want some of that stuff? Looking at the list of installed plugins, I have no clue if they're standard Apple/Mozilla stuff, or if they were selected by me/my family earlier in Safari? Are any of them a threat to my online security?
Any detailed instruction would be most appreciated. I'm not much of a tech guy.
    Thanks.

  • Firefox Makes my MAC 10.6.8 Snow Leopard Freeze Often

I'm using a MAC Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Firefox 10.0.1. Over the past month, I've had terrible problems with either Firefox freezing or my entire computer freezing when I was using Firefox. Then I have to do a Safe Boot and start all over, losing what I was working on or looking at. Can someone please tell me what the problem is? I tried going back to Safari but I like Firefox better. But I can't have my computer freezing every few hours like this. Thanks.

  • Mac OS X Lion Server screen freezes frequently

I have recently purchased the Mac Mini Server with 8GB RAM Upgrade and have been experiencing screen freezes frequently. The Mac Mini is connected to a ViewSonic LED Monitor via an HDMI cable and is running Mac OS X Lion Server.
It all started a month ago and I suspected it was due to an external hard disk I had. When I removed it the problem didn't crop up for a few weeks. So I thought the issue was resolved.
Over the past week the problem re-surfaced again and nearly everyday I am experiencing screen freezing about five times a day and the only option is to power down my Mac Mini Server from the power button. This is becoming increasingly frustrating. When screen freezing occurs, everything freezes and I get some small rectangular boxes on screen moving.
The only things that have changed over the past week was that I installed the latest Safari fix and connected the Harman Kardon Sounsticks II to the Mac Mini.
Can't understand what is happening. From various threads I read, many mac users are experiencing screen freezes. If anyone has any resolutions please let me know.

Lion has a screen refresh bug it is just the screen going to sleep and the the screen updating only where the curser moves.

  • My late 2008 mac book pro runs slow and freezes

Hi, there! I have a late 2008 mac book pro and few months ago I upgraded the operating system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Since then my mac book often freezes, it is much slower than it was with Snow Leopard and the most annoying thing of all, is the almost inevidable freezing of the toolbar (where language selection, date, clock and other useful tools are located)
I was wondering if someone has experienced similar issues with his Mac Book Pro when upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion and if someone knows if and how this issue can be resolved?
    Thank you.

I have the same problem. Up until 2 days ago my MacBook Pro was running fine, then suddenly things started going wrong. I am using mac os x 10.6.7 as well. Does this have something to do with any firmware updates.
    Any help/ suggestions welcome.

  • Cannot use Mac 10.9.4 at all freezing and apps will not open

I am not able to open the apps on my Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.4, they just bounce.  Activity Monitor gets so frozen I cannot find out what the hold up is.  Screen freezes in some of the system preferences as well - Users, Parent Controls Accessibility.  I do not have a disk, no disk drive to reinstall.  I am very new to Mac, please help
    marcyg

Do you have at least 4 GBs of RAM installed and at least 20 GBs of free space on your hard drive.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • HT5918 Mac Pro (Late 2013) Dual monitors freeze on startup?

I've got 2 monitors, 1 HDMI and 1 MiniDisplayPort/DVI into Thunderbolt, and the computer can't start, it crashes during the boot process. The main screen freezes just as the login comes up, the MDP screen is scrambled, and the mouse cursor is a spinning pizza.
The only solution so far is to remove the MDP cable during startup, but that is a dealbreaker because dual monitors is the sole reason I bought this, and c'mon it's a really expensive computer -- even my old MacBook could handle 2 monitors!
    Any insights or solutions appreciated.

Have you tried another cable and adapter?
Try another DVI monitor to help determine the cause
Are you using a Thunderbolt port not shared with the HDMI port?
