Random music playback of iTunes doesn't seem so random.

Once an artist is played it's almost certain that artist will be played 1 or 2 more times in the next 10-15 songs.  I have several hundred artists on my playlist and over 3K songs, so statistically not right.  Is there some setting or option that I have that would influence this?

Hi,
We could argue long time on this one.  You cannot determine the randomness based on playback statistic unless you are performing significant ammount of trial.
Also, your question was about the odds of having a second song from a same artist within a given period.  Therefore, you will have to take into account the number of song you actually have for each artist and going this way, you are less and less talking about randomness rather than listenning to a good variaty of music.
We could argue but, at the end, there's no setting regarding shuffle mode which is your question.
A few years ago, there was such setting to reduce the probability of having a same artist being played twice.  At that time, I recall Steve Jobs saying that Apple was trying to make the shuffle less random because user perception is not random.  Apple decide some time ago to remove this adjustment (I don't recall the iTunes version).
Anyhow, shuffle mix your songs... I don't see the point of making statistic.

Try this. Start up Itunes. Click on Home Movies Videos in the movies section. If you have a movie her, right button click and select "Get Info". On the options tab, change the media kind to movie and select OK. Your other movies will slowly start to appear!

  • ITunes doesn't seem to be updating my podcast

I recently added my Podcast to iTunes, and I've done 3 episodes since then but none of them have shown up on the iTunes store page. If I subscribe though, it downloads them, but they still aren't on the iTunes store page. I've tried using the ping update by putting the URL into my address bar but that doesn't seem to work either. Could I please get some assistance?

hmmm...that's interesting. A lot of people have been having problems with iTunes 7.5. I know this probably really isn't helping but...iTunes is coming out pretty soon with a newer version so...just wait it out i guess. I don' really know what else to tell u.

  • Noises&skipping during music playback on itunes from ext drive audio files.

    hello,
Since my itunes library it is getting too big (about 14000 songs & wave files) I'm using a maxtor one touch II 300gb ext hard drive & another ext 200gb where I moved only the actual audio files.
So I get weird noises, like electric noise or static, during playback & very often some songs just skip after a few seconds to the next song.
I tried everything: on the ipod these files are still bad, on cd as well & on pro tools the same...I can't get rid of these noises & skipping.
So I have the feeling that I'm doing something wrong setting up itunes with an ext drive.
Do I have to put on the ext drive the actual itunes music library.xml & itunes library icon from the int drive?
Or just the actual music & keep the original itunes folder untouched?
Which one should I choose as the main music folder location, int or ext?
Please help I'm lost & i'm losing so many songs during these days...
    Thanks,

    Hello,
thanks so much for your support:
I actually did everything but at this point I get lost...
    # After the folder has been copied, locate your original iTunes Music folder, and drag it to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Note: Don't remove the iTunes 4 Music Library files that may be in the same location as the iTunes Music folder.
    # Empty the Trash or Recycle Bin.
I don't understand if they talk about the iTunes music folder located in the internal hd or the one in the external one that now is the main folder for itunes.
Do I have to put the .xml & the music library icon on the ext as well?
    thanks again,
    Paolo

  • Itunes doesn't seem to synch "wirelessly" with my iphone.  It seems to work with emails but not photos / videos I've taken on my phone.  Also, there is no "device" listed on itunes menu bar, only when connected via cables

My computer / iTunes is set up correctly for wireless (account info. all good), and emial is synched wirelessly.  BUT not photos / videos or songs.  I seem to have to plug my iPhone into my computer for iTunes to recognize my device.  Shouldn't iTunes recognize my iphone wirelessly?  For example, I have read that "device" should show up in menu bar on iTunes but it doesn't unless I'm cabled in.
Also, when I go to my iPhone to "synch wirelessly with iTunes", the button / tab doesn't light up for me to chose and tells me will synch when "smith - laptop" is available.....
This is my first iPhone, and just got it so may be user error.....
    thanks

  • TV Shows and Music purchased through iTunes doesn't work on my iPhone

When I play some of the music and tv shows purchased through iTunes on my iPhone, it would play for around 30 seconds for music and anywhere from 5-20 min for the shows, and then either go to the next song, or stop playing the video for no reason.
It seems to be a specific spot which "crashes" the song, because say the song or video stops at 2:31, I can seek to "2:33", and the song/video would play normally, and not crash.
    What's the reason for this?

Contact Apple and report a problem via your *purchase history*. Either from the iTunes store, or the email receipt they send.

  • ITunes doesn't seem to know how to count,  multiple references for same mp3

Have had several MP3 players, but just got my first ipod.
I have 5899 mp3 files under the My Music directory stucture.
The two other programs I use to manage my music (Rio Music Manager, and Media Monkey) both see 5899 songs and one copy of each file.
Also a directory from the CMD prompt verifies 5899 mp3 files.. totalling about 24GB
When iTunes scans the same directory it shows 10,352 songs or a total of 38.79GB.
I should be able to put my entire collection on the 30GB video ipod, but because of what itunes is doing, they do not fit.
I see most all songs with 2-3 references in the library. I have to uncheck 2 of the three to have iTunes only send one copy to the player..
I have uninstalled iTunes twice and it does the same thing every time..
Love the ipod, but iTunes needs help..
    Any ideas?
    TIA,
    Bryan

actually think I found my own answer. I have 5 M3U playlists under the directory structure. Synch lists and playlists for my other players..
I moved them out, then cleared the itunes database, rescanned the directories and only 5899 songs came in..
Any way to bring my m3u lists in without the dupication?

  • Trouble w/ iTunes & external hard drives: iTunes doesn't like to play nice

This is a story about my external hard drives and my macbook pro. Some time ago, I moved my itunes music folder with all of my songs and movies consolidated to it onto external hard drive #1, but kept my itunes organizational data on my macbook pro's internal hard drive. Life was good. I had more internal hard drive space on my macbook pro then ever because all my songs and movies were gone, and itunes worked flawlessly as long as hard drive #1 was connected.
To prepare for the future, I also dragged a copy of my itunes music folder with all my songs and movies in it onto hard drive #2 for safekeeping. Now, i had 2 copies of my itunes songs and movies, one on each hard drive. My insurance policy was in place. One day, hard drive #1 stopped mounting on my computer. It was time for old #1 leave me for the sweet peace of the afterlife. I bought a new hard drive, hard drive #3. I dragged my backup of hard drive #1's old files, including my itunes music folder with all of my songs and movies, from hard drive #2 to hard drive #3.
Now, my entire itunes data folder is sitting on hard drive #3 and yet itunes doesn't seem to want to play nice. All of my files have cute little exclamation marks next to them. When I double click on a song, iTunes pretends to be lost. It asks me to locate the mp3 and naturally I find it right in my iTunes music folder by searching for it, only this time it's sitting on hard drive #3 instead of hard drive #1. By going manually through my library this way, i could keep all playlists, play counts, ratings, and other lovely bits of data intact. However, this would take years, as my songs and movies number in the bajillions. If there isn't an easy solution I am missing, surely there must be a script or program that does this legwork for me, perhaps while I slumber.
No one on the internet seems to have this problem; everyone wants to use their ipods to restore their songs and movies. Since I own an iPod Touch, restoring the pitiful amount of files I have on it is a waste of my time, especially when all the files from my iPod are sitting right on little old hard drive #3 anyway. Citizens of the interwebs, here my plea: I require a solution to my problem of getting iTunes to recognize the folder of data it once interfaced with so seamlessly. I require a solution that does not destroy four years worth of playlists, and preferably not the "date added" data on my tracks either. All other data is fine for me to lose, but preferably not. I already know that finding the tracks manually keeps all data intact. My first inclination is that a solution to my problem may be to speed up that process. For those who seek an answer, as I do: godspeed, brave mac users. God.... godspeed.

    This should work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449?viewlocale=en_US
    BE AWARE THOUGH:
I followed these steps and had a strange issue come up. I don't think it was at all related following the steps above. But just double check your music BEFORE you throw out any of the music from you computers hard drive.
    Here's what happen.
Some of my music forgot what file type they were. I had some that decided to be plist others jpg others something else. It was totally random. And a HUGE pain to replace the music. But I worked through it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Computer/iTunes doesn't recognize iPod.  Can't restore either

Somehow, between syncing my iPod (classic, fifth generation)with iTunes and downloaded latest version of iTunes, my pod self-destructed. I got a brief message to "restore" but since the computer or iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the iPod, I can't do it. I am no longer getting the message. I can't find the iPod in Windows Explorer or Device Manager. When I plug the iPod into the computer, all I get is a completely white screen and an occasional beep-beep. Can I take it to a retailer and have it restored?

  • ITunes doesn't recognize iPod library since I reformatted computer

Hi all. Have mercy on me as I am new at these discussion boards.
I have a wonderful iPod that I really enjoy. My laptop get really slow so I had to reformat it. Once I completed the reformat, I began to reload programs, and put iTunes on right away. I connected my iPod via USB, and it downloaded my purchased songs back onto my laptop, so that was a success.
But iTunes doesn't seem to want to let me do any normal manipulation to my iPod files. For instance, it won't let me copy new songs downloaded to iTunes onto my iPod. It won't let me create new playlists on iTunes, or anything.
I got on Apples support page, and did the first 4 "R's" (didn't want to do the nuclear option of Restore) and that didn't change anything.
Any advice and help the forum community could give me would be most welcomed!
