Random Number in kernel module
Hi,
I want to use random numbers in my driver. Is there any kernel API which can do this? I installed the patch 112438-01 for this purpose. This installs a char device /dev/random which while reading provides random number. But I am not able to open and read the /dev/random from driver code.
Is there any way out ??

VinayThere is indeed a way to do it, but it is not documented. Look in /usr/include/sys/random
for the random_get_bytes and random_get_pseudo_bytes functions. Note that to use this
you must link against drv/random. The best way to do this is to do -N drv/random on your
ld link line.
Of course, since this isn't a public API, no guarantees. (I do know of one "unbundled"
Sun product that uses it, so it should be safe for S8 and S9 at least.)

Kernel-based random number collector
does anyone know if there are any plans for the inclusion of a kernel-based random number collector, /dev/random in future releases of solaris? this device is something that's been in linux and the BSD's for quite sometime now and is rather import, at least if you're concerned with using secure products like secure shell, ssl, pgp, or gnupg.
i know that sun encludes the cryptorand daemon with it's webserver, which creates a FIFO /dev/random. i've found that the random data it gathers gets used up quickly and fails to generate more unless cryptorand is restarted. when this happens any process that needs random data will just hang on trying to gather randomness, this makes it unreliable.
if there is a better forum to post such a request please point me in the right direction.
thankstry putting the prompt within a HTML frame and refresh the frame...

fglrx has just recently stopped working, and I can't quite pinpoint when that was because I honestly hadn't noticed until checking. I've tried a few reinstalls and different xorg options so far, but had no luck.

Would it be possible to explain the other warnings in Xorg.0.log? Rather curious about those apart from the obvious one, too.
Thanks.
Last edited by Newnux (2007-07-11 16:04:15)Indeed, that seems the end-all error of it all.
I'll summarise my warnings, some for curious reasons:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) # What's this?
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found # Not a problem.
(WW) fglrx(0): Only one display is connnected,so single mode is enabled # No problem.
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.

(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver. # included to show where this was displayed
All versions previous to that show 8.38.6:
(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
compiled for 7.1.0, module version = 8.38.6
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 1.0
So I assume I have an old version dotted around somewhere, but I'm not sure about how it's all loaded and such.
Now, quoting something I'd come across a few times and taking it from thinkwiki:
If you lose hardware acceleration after a driver update this can be caused by an old fglrx kernel module being loaded.
Check out /var/log/Xorg.0.log for a message like:
(WW) fglrx(0): Kernel Module version does *not* match driver.
(EE) fglrx(0): incompatible kernel module detected - HW accelerated OpenGL will not work
You can verify this yourself by looking at the version message some lines above. It should read something not matching the installed version like:
(II) fglrx(0): Kernel Module Version Information:
(II) fglrx(0): Name: fglrx
(II) fglrx(0): Version: 8.10.19
The cause for this trouble might be that there resist multiple versions of the fglrx module within the kernel module search path.
Go to /lib/modules/<your linux kernel version>/ and type # grep fglrx modules.dep.
If grep finds multiple lines you nailed down the problem. All you have to do now is to delete any versions of the module (look at the filedate) but the most current one. Then run # depmod and you are done.
Hint:
Newer versions (8.21.7) of the fglrx module seem to be installed in the extra/ subdirectory.
Older versions (8.19.10) used to be located in the kernel/drivers/char/drm/ subdirectory.
How does this apply to Arch? I only found one instance of fglrx by using that method.
Edit: Forgot to add that I've tried reinstalling a few times, it doesn't really seem to do anything. Wondering if I should attempt to install an older version or something, but I don't get why the driver numbers don't match for me. Surely others have updated their drivers too.

[Solved] Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module
Hi all,
I've just made the jump to arch and have a fresh install. I'm having trouble getting the nvidia drivers to work. I am currently using the nouveau drivers without issue.
The method I am using - after much trial - is:
- uninstall nouveau and mesa lib
- install nvidia package
- remove nouveau module entry in mkinitcpio.conf
- run `mkinitcpio -p linux`
- edit .conf in xorg.conf.d with minimal required settings. Currently:
Section "Device"
Identifier "device0"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
I have installed the linux-headers package and tried reinstalling nvidia again

The only entry I found in `dmesg | grep nvidia` related to nvidia-drm, and seemed to say it was loaded successfully. I didn't save the exact entry and i've reinstalled nouveau now so that I could post this.
Any help much appriciated. I've been at this for a while. Learning a lot in the process!
Last edited by gnibbler (2014-01-04 22:31:49)Success! Several days of trying various things and I finally give in and make a post to this forum. One more attempt - which was only really so that I could add modprobe info to this post - and it works.
I had at some stage installed the driver xf86-video-nv, and this may have been causing the clash. I un-installed it, and followed the procedure above to reinstall nvidia.
I think the main hang up I'd had is that I had not been rebuilding my kernel image with mkinitcpio after installing nvidia during my previous attempts.
I hope some info in here helps some other stuck archer.
Edit: Thanks graysky. I had found the right nvidia driver using the arch wiki and followed this advice to remove the nouveau hook. Much appriciated.

Creation of random number through system fields
Hi ,
I like to create a random number generation program.(apart form system time) .
I have noticed that system response time differs (minimal variation in terms of milliseconds) every time
when we execute a program .
In that case could i know how to get the system response time and interpretation time from system fields in program !
Note : I like to know the table in which these values can be retrieved (like TRDIR for other system fields)use these function modules.
QF05_RANDOM

Do you have any idea of what should be done to fix it? I don't want to use NVIDIA driver from their site neither nouveau, I want to use the one from the repo. If you know how to solve it, instead of only pointing the solution, also tell why this is happening, it will help me and other people with the same problem too!
If you need additional information please ask me.
Thanks!!

As it's mentioned, it may be a problem of ACPI.
About the lib32-nvidia-utils, I just installed because it's written in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing: "Note: On 64 bit systems, For 32-bit programs to take advantage of nvidia-utils you must also install the equivalent lib32 package (for example lib32-nvidia-utils)." -
I am having trouble getting the kernel to recognize the raid drivers which my card uses. The install of arch is fresh. The raid card is a HighPoint RocketRaid 2300. I browsed the AUR and found a PKGBUILD for an older version of the driver written by LoneWolf. I updated it to fit my needs.
The PKGBUILD I have is:
# Contributor: LoneWolf --Edited by Vitechy

pkgver=2.1
pkgrel=3
pkgdesc="Kernel modules for Highpoint RocketRAID 230x and 231x SATA cards"

_kernver=2.6.31-ARCH
# Note : pkgname should be rr231_0x , but using this name gives problems with the 2007.08 base installer --Not sure what this means so ill leave it alone.
build() {
mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${_kernver}/kernel/drivers/scsi/
cd $startdir/src/rr231x_0x-linux-src-v2.5/product/rr2310pm/linux/

mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/usr/share/licenses/$pkgname
cp $startdir/src/rr231x_0x-linux-src-v2.5/README $startdir/pkg/usr/share/licenses/$pkgname/
The post install script I used is:
# This is a default template for a post-install scriptlet. You can
# remove any functions you don't need (and this header).
# arg 1: the new package version
pre_install() {
/bin/true
# arg 1: the new package version
post_install() {

depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
# arg 1: the new package version
# arg 2: the old package version
post_upgrade() {
KERNEL_VERSION='2.6.35-ARCH'
depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
# arg 1: the old package version
post_remove() {
KERNEL_VERSION='2.6.35-ARCH'
depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
op=$1
shift
$op $*
Executing the PKGBUILD with the makepkg command creates a .pkg.tar.gz file. Installing the package with pacman -U nameofpackage.pkg.tar.gz reports that the package has been installed. Running pacman -Qs reports that there is a package, local/rr231x-0x on the system.
The raid card is still not functioning. Instead of seeing a raid array I see the individual HDD's which are connected to the raid card which is something I could see even before running makepkg. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have rebooted the PC but that has done nothing. Also running modprobe rr230x_0x or modprobe rr2310_00 returns FATAL:Module rr230x_0x/rr2310_00 not found.
Any help is appreciated.
Zlatan
PS. The md5sums in the PKGBUILD example I provided above is not the same one as the one in the PKGBUILD which is actually compiling on the server. The PKGBUILD above I recited from memory; however, I do not remember the actual number which I obtained by running makepkg -g. I will update as soon as I have access to the server again. I have updated the PKGBUILD above to exactly match the one im using on the server.
Last edited by Vitechy (2010-09-21 02:00:13)Oh, wow I didn't even notice that.
Modprobe was able to load the modules now; however, now I see the HDD's and the raid array. In other words running fdisk -l shows all of the HDD's connected to the raid card, /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc as well as the raid array /dev/sdd.
The raid array has not finished building, so is it a possibility that that is why it is showing up. I will post updates when the raid array has finished initializing.

To verify that your adapter is supported, find the board ID number
on the adapter. Look for a label that has a barcode and a number
in the format 123456-001 (six digits hyphen three digits). Match

Need Random "Number" Generation
Hi...
Need an easy way to generate a random "number" from an ABAP program... that is a combination of numbers and alphabetic characters.
Is there a Function Module I did not find?
Currently using Function module 'QF05_RANDOM_INTEGER' but this only generates a number.
Thanks for your insights !
Dave...Hi,
I wrote a little method to generate a random number between 1 and 100 (can be modified to allow bigger range of numbers). The code is below... It basically gets a timestamp into a field of type timestampl (note the letter L at the end of the type). The method signature consists of a single returning parameter called RANDOM_NUMBER (type I). After much testing, the random sequence of numbers is extremely varied (even without a seed).
Since 'QF05_RANDOM_INTEGER' already exists, then my method is not needed here, but I thought I'd include it in this thread since the topic was brought up.
Cheers,
James G.
METHOD GENERATE_RANDOM_NUMBER .
DATA:
delay_cnt TYPE i,
lc_ran_seed TYPE p,
lc_time TYPE timestampl,
ran_num TYPE p DECIMALS 7.
* Get the long time stamp (nano second level)
GET TIME STAMP FIELD lc_time.
* Get the decimal part of the time stamp and shift it so that only the
* last decimal values are used (i.e. the smallest unit of time)
ran_num = frac( lc_time ).
ran_num = ran_num * 10000.
* Perform a delay with a varying length of time so that the next time
* stamp will be more "random" if the method is called multiple times
* (e.g. if called in a do loop to generate many random numbers)
delay_cnt = ran_num * 2.
DO delay_cnt TIMES. ENDDO.
* Get the decimal part of the shifted time stamp, multiply it by 100 to
* shift it to the left 2 decimal places, and add 1 to the result.
ran_num = frac( ran_num ).
lc_ran_seed = ( ran_num * 100 ) + 1.
random_number = lc_ran_seed.
* If the number generated is not between 1 and 100, then try again.
IF random_number IS INITIAL OR random_number < 1
OR random_number > 100.
CALL METHOD me->generate_random_number
RECEIVING
random_number = random_number.
ENDIF.
ENDMETHOD. -
CIFS Kernel Module Needed for A7600-F. Can't mount CIFS Shares.
Does anyone have, or could compile a CIFS Kernel for the A10 (A7600-F) please.
I am trying to mount CIFS shares on my NAS, nut don't have the cifs.ko file required.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You really seem to know what you're doing.
I need the same module files for my A10-70 (A7600-F).
Are you able to complie these please?
Lenovo make the source code available here

I've tried to do this myself, but can't figure it out.
Can you help me please?
Thanks

How do I time() in a kernel module?
I have a pseudo driver that needs to know the number of seconds since epoch.
nm /dev/ksyms reveals there is the symbol 'time' in the kernel but apparently it is not a function.
There is also 'getimeofday' but if I call that from my attach routine, attach fails.All kernel module should use ddi_xx interface calls or kernel functions. Make sure you know what functions are C library, what functions are kernel functions. Use #man -a xxxx.

Generating Random number for requisition number
hai all,
Am having a requirement of generating a random number based on the type of Process.
Say if it is medical means I want it to be MEDxxxxx .
Is thr any FM Please send some suggestions...
Thanks in advance,
Nalla.BHi Nalla,
First this is not WDABAP related question.
To Do this you need to contact Functional guys, they will generate number ranges.
Based on that object we can generate numbers. using NUMBER_RANGE_ENQUEUE and
NUMBER_GET_NEXT function module.
Cheers,

[S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0
After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.
[edit] I should mention that this upgrade was run April 30th.[/edit]
When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried
journalctl _PID=1799
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'sg': Function not implemented
systemd[1]: system-modules-load[1799]: Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented
which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”
[edit2=solution]
There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.
Last edited by nstgc (2015-05-05 12:07:30)Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.
grub.cfg now looks like
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
# It is automatically generated by grub-mkconfig using templates
# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub

[edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

Last edited by wsims (2010-06-22 15:06:04)if you used the packages from repos, the blacklist is done automatically in nvidia,
$ pacman -Qo /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
/etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf is owned by nvidia 195.36.31-1
$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau_blacklist.conf
blacklist nouveau
but i guess you just want to mess your system by using unsupported and very bad ways and you are way smarter than the devs if you used that installer

Questions: On NVIDIA Kernel module and install process
Hi everyone,
I have a PCIe 7600 GT card, and trying to get it to work in its full power.
So far I have not succeeded, and condemned to run in VESA mode. But have one more try to do following the advisory of upgrading kernel and reinstalling the Nvidia driver.
I have few questions though:
- I know my kernel as 2.6.15-ARCH (from the dir in /usr/src), but in the above mentioned advisory, there were more digits after ("2.6.16.14-1"). Where in my system, I can locate those micro version numbers, if I need to?
- My not-yet-working Nvidia driver insrtall (from [testing]) left a kernel module with "agp" in the name. Is it the way it should be, taking into account that I have a PCIe card? Or is this pointing to an install problem?
- I have browsed the stuff in the 8756 vintage of the Nvidia driver, and noticed that there are references to X11R6 which I do not have (have an X R7 Xorg). Which one of the driver-install-script or Arch-PKGBUILD-file has the intelligence to place the files correctly in R6 and R7 installs?
- The 8756 text also refers to nvidia-xconfig utility, and I did use it in my 64-bit Gentoo install. In my Arch install it is no where to be found. Again, is this pointing to an install problem?
Thanks,1.
pacman -Q kernel26
will give you the minor numbers
2. no clue
3. the 8751 driver works fine with xorg 7, so i presume the new one should work also.
4. no clue
as an alternative to VESA :
pacman -S xf86-video-nv
this will install the open source nvidia driver. It supports only 2D acceleration, but should improve your screen a lot over standard VESA.
put
Driver "nv"
in your device section in xorg.conf to enable it.
