  • Batch Rename---in Random Order

    Is it possible to batch rename a set of files in a random order?
    Making a slideshow of a number of events, but I don't want them in the order shot.  I can manually rename and move them, or I could sort by some other order than by name or date, such as file size, I guess, but those options haven't randomized the collection as well as I would like.
    Just askin'...
    Thanks in advance.

    I’m not great with Scripts, but this might work:
    // adds random five digits numbers at the beginning of jpgs’ filenames in a folder;
    // use it at your own risk;
    var theFolder = Folder.selectDialog ("select folder that contains the files to be renamed");
    // for renaming other files than jpgs change the term in the brackets accordingly;
    var theFiles = theFolder.getFiles ("*.jpg");
    for (var m = 0; m < theFiles.length; m++) {
    var theRandomNumber = String(Math.random()).slice(3,8);
    File(theFiles[m]).rename(theRandomNumber + "_" + (theFiles[m]).name)
    One can copy the text into a new file in ExtendScript Toolkit (which should be part of Photoshop’s installation) and start running it by hitting the play-button or save it as a jsx-file into Photoshop’s Presets – Scripts; but it really doesn’t do anything within Photoshop, so it may be better not stored there.
    Anyway it’s probably be best to run it only on a copy of a folder, because getting the numbers back off later on might be bothersome.

  • Script to renumber links in random order

    I have chapter 1 page with 50 small photos in a very orthodox and symmetric grid that I should repeat in a different random order for other chapters.
    Links have a numbered logical syntax like:
    pict1.tif
    pict2.tif
    etc.
    For the chapter 2, the idea is repeat the first one but in a random order. Same photos, same layout, different order.
    Perhaps a script could rename the links?
    Thus, once the folder is duplicated I will have a second folder:
    picture 1.tif is now, for example, pict45.tif
    picture2.tif.is now, for example, pict13.tif
    etc.
    IF I relink a copy of chapter 1 to this second folder perhaps the idea could be solved.

    Jarek, hi.
    It works when it is only ONE picture by page.
    But, with many pictures in the page, as in the example, the script is dead.
    (no error at all)
    I have six pages with the same grid of pictures repeated in a file.
    The idea is that in p. 2, 3, etc, the script alters the order in random to have different positions.
    Tried different combinations but were useless.
    Thanks.
    PD. The screenshots show the script working with single images.

  • Photos: Random-order slideshow; how?

    In iPhoto a valuable feature was a slideshow in random order. How is this done in Photos?

    Petersit:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you selecting an album and then using the Play button in the bottom toolbar? If so, then in the Setting window there's a checkbox, checked by default, setting the order to random. Uncheck it.
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Create random order slideshow and burn to dvd

    I am trying to create a random order slideshow and burn it to a dvd playable on a dvd player. I tried creating the slideshow in iphoto using the album mode, and was successful in creating the slideshow, but cannot save, export or burn. Would appreciate any help.

    Thanks for your help!
    I am trying to make a slide show of 900+ photos. I moved the photos from a CD into iPhoto. Originally I tried Magic iDVD, dropped the photos from the Event zone into the drop zones in Magic iDVD, chose a theme and previewed. The slides were shuffled from the beginning, and at first I thought that some of the themes allowed the shuffling of the slides as an effect. However, I did notice that the slides remained in the same order regardless of the theme chosen, but wasn't sure why this was the case. I then made the mistake of trying to eliminate a few of the slides and divide the slides more evenly between the two drop zones. I went back to the Event, opened the folder and selected the photos to be included and moved them to a new folder. From that point on the "shuffle" of the photos was gone and the photos appeared in the order in which they were taken. I spent several hours of trial and error trying to reinstate the shuffle, called Apple, talked with various Apple help and more expert users and finally ended up seeking help from the discussion boards where I found the post explaining how to create the shuffled slideshow in the Albums area of iPhoto . This is exactly what I am looking for--shuffled photos and random transitions! Unfortunately, it seems as though you can only view this slideshow from the computer. Now I am looking for another way to do the same thing. I am new to Apple, and trial and error is extremely time consuming and in this case not very productive. If there is a software program which will create a random shuffle (either Mac or Win) I can always create the shuffle and then import the photos back into the Events folder and create the DVD. Any help/ideas for a successful completion of this project are welcome! Thanks.

  • How do you play photos in random order?!?!?

    This is apple right? You can do things very easily, thats why I switched from PC. How do I view photos in random order in iPhoto? The help menu says to choose the "Shuffle Slide Order"... WHAA? Where is this on the menu, am I doing somethig wrong? Please tell me I am just missing the obvous.
    Thanks!
    B

    Hi Brian,
    I am assuming you are talking about an "on the fly" slideshow.
    Select the images, album, roll, etc. and hit the Play button on the bottom left of the window. In the next window, check "shuffle slides order"
    Pssst...just a little hint, you will not find shuffle on a permanent slideshow menu for an option.

  • Photo Albums in Random Order

    I have recently moved from Aperture to Lightroom because Apple are no longer going to develop Aperture. Needless to say I have to create new photo albums to be able to view on ATV, which I've done.
    Now when I point iTunes to the folders of albums they appear in chronological order in iTunes (my files are names by year/month - album name   e.g.. 2014/08 - Vacation)
    When I view the photo album list on ATV they are in a random order. Does anyone know a work around that I am not seeing. I do remember some years ago this happened and then an update happened and it seemed to rectify it. And yes my ATV's are up to date.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    Before going into any depth about this have you checked that you aren't simply using the shuffle option in the slideshow settings.

  • Random order for slide show?

    I have a lot of pictures in an album that I would like put in random order for a slide show. I want to burn that to a dvd to play at our day care centers (pics of the kids throughout the summer). is there any way to do this other than dragging and dropping the pictures manually? that takes a lot of time.

    OK. Well here's a helpful answer. Someone's already written a quick Applescript for adding random numbers to every file in a folder. I added a little bit to the beginning and the end to let you be able to just drag and drop the folder onto the file, but give full credit to the poster
    Steps:
    (1) Open the Applescript Editor:
    Finder->Applications->Apple Script->Script Editor.app
    (2) In a new Script copy and paste the following text:
    --start copying
    on open the_Droppings
    tell application "Finder"
    set separator to ("_") as text
    set source to the_Droppings as alias
    set destination to make new folder at source with properties {name:"Shuffled"}
    set shuffle_pool to duplicate files of source to destination
    set shuffle_count to count shuffle_pool
    set duplicates to {}
    repeat with shuffle_file in shuffle_pool
    repeat
    set an_item to random number from 1 to shuffle_count
    if an_item is not in duplicates then exit repeat
    end repeat
    shuffle_file as alias
    set name of result to an_item & separator & name of result as string
    set end of duplicates to an_item
    end repeat
    end tell
    end open
    -- stop pasting here
    (3) File->Save As
    (4) Type in a name for the file and IMPORTANT save it as an application.
    (5) Place all the images that you want to randomize into any folder. (In iPhoto6: File->Export from an album or; in iPhoto5: Share->Export)
    (6) Drag the folder with your images onto the little application that you saved from the Script Editor
    (7) The Script will create a new folder inside whatever folder you dropped on it called "Shuffled".
    (8) Now if you do an Edit->Add Slideshow in iDVD you can just drag the contents of the Shuffled folder to iDVD and you're done! It'll make a DVD in seconds! Now if only you could set the time to more than 10 seconds!

  • How do I make a slideshow play in random order?

    I have a simple slideshow comprised of about 10 images that fade in and out from one photo to the next. I'd like to be able to have them play in random order. How can I make this happen?

  • Random changes when changing setting for individual slide in a slideshow

    I've used iPhoto for years and produced many slideshows. However, now when I try to use Ken Burns Effect for an individual slide, I click on the "start" area, adjust my slide, click on "end," and then iPhoto jumps to a totally different slide in the slideshow. When I go back to the slide I wanted to work with, nothing was saved, and the same random change of picture happens.
    Actually, the Ken Burns Effect hasn't worked correctly on ANY slide I've tried.
    Also, when I try to rearrange the slide order, the slides may stay in the correct order for a few seconds, but then a slide may jump four slides to the right (and again out of order). This behavior is strange and random. It is infuriating and I don't know what to do.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    ALSO, when I export a slideshow with music, the song plays fine for a few minutes, but then another song starts and the two songs are playing on top of each other (actually, it may be the same song playing over itself too).
    What gives?!

    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • Stop random order in iPhoto slideshow

    Every time I set slideshow photos manually they revert to a random order when playing. I need for this to not happen! Help

    What version of Photo are you running? Are you playing the slideshow from an album? How are the photos sorted in the album?
    There's a bug in  iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks and Yosemite in that slideshows from Albums do not play correctly if they are sorted manually.  Only photos that have been sorted by date, keyword, rating or title will play from albums correctly.
    Go to the App Store and update iPhoto to iPhoto 9.6 which fixes that bug.
    To have a slideshow with photos sorted manually with iPhoto 9.5.1 use the slideshow mode in iPhoto.

  • Photos appear in random order?

    When I upload photos via the iPhoto Slideshow wizard, and then create a new photo page via .Mac, the photos are all in random order and I have to reorder them all.
    Why is this the default behavior and how do I correct this?
    The way it should work is that they should be arranged in order that they were taken and let you rearrange from there.

    captkurt:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I'm guessing that the order up on .Mac is alphanumerical as that's the default sorting order for computers so you must rename the files before uploading. To get the renamed in the correct order assemble them in an album, sort as you'd like and the use the .File->Export->File Export menu option and select the "Use Album Name" option. Export to a folder on the desktop and then either reimport into iPhoto to upload or manually upload to your iDisk and access thru the .Mac page if you can create the slideshow online. If not then you'll have to reimport and go thru iPhoto.
    The User Album Name option will give you the following file names: AlbumName-01.jpg, AlbumName-02.jpg, etc. That might just do it for you. Check your uploads to see if they truly in alphanumerical order before going to all this work.

  • Show photos in random order (with possibility to switch back to last one shown)

    Hallo!
    I'm having trouble to to show my entire photoselection on my ipad in random order - like on a regular photoframe. The only possibility I figured out, was to show the whole library as a screensaver in random order. Unfortunately in this case I'm neither able to zoom in the current picture or to switch back to the last one(s). In the build in photos app i can start a slideshow with all pics but I didn't found an option to randomize them.
    I already tried tons of photoframe-apps, but all of them have problems to import all of my ~30.000 photos (automaticly) without having to select every single one of them.
    Does anyone have a solution on this??

    I'm now using Snow Leopard, and the same thing happens. Don't know if it is relevant or not, but one of the things I've noticed is that the System Preferences window (even when hidden) shows in the right place, but clicking on it doesn't work. It is as if the window and the buttons are somewhere other than where they show on the screen. Quitting System Preferences and restarting it solves the problem.

  • In downloading my Events from iPhoto on my Mac to my iPad Air, the Events arrive in the proper order but not showing the Key Photo.  At the same time, the Events arrive in iPhoto on the iPad in totally random order but showing the Key Photo.Why?

    In downloading my Events from iPhoto on my Mac to my Ipad Air, the Events arrive in Photos in the correct order but not showing the Key photo. At the same time, the Events arrive in iPhoto in a totally random order but with the Key phto showing. Why? of course and is there a way to shift the order in Iphoto and get a Key photo in Photos?

    HHi, thank you for the reply. I have checked my iPad and iPhone and neither has iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled. Turned off in both. Photostream is turned on.
    i tried to sort it out  by dragging all the photos to Events on the Mac and then deleting them from iCloud - (left hand side of iPhoto under the section 'Shared'). the photos now show up in Events. I did force quit but the issue remains. The message reads ' photos are bing imported to the library. Please wait for import to complete.'
    i can't empty iPhoto trash either. The message read "Delete error. Please wait for import to complete.'
    WHen I was moving the photos to the Events I always had a message about duplicates - to the effect that the photos already existed, did I want to import them? I clicked on Yes, import all duplicates. But when it showed the images - duplicates side by side - one showed the photo and the other was blank.
    I really don't know what to do! And I don't know how to handle my iOS devices. Is it to do with the large number of photos? Any help, advice appreciated.
