Random pause bug?

Hi all,
I ordered a new iPod 2G Nano 8GB when they were announced. Generally I've been very pleased with it (my first iPod).
One thing that is starting to drive me nuts is that sometimes it will pause while playing a track for no apparent reason.
This can happen whether:
- it is in 'hold'
- using the supplied Apple ear-buds or third party ones
- playing music or podcasts
It doesn't seam to happen when the iPod is in the dock and I am listening through the dock's line-out.
Some tracks almost always have the problem (particularly some enhanced podcasts), playing these it can pause five times in a 20 second section before I give up!
Other times it can go hours without happening.
Mostly I use my iPod while doing computer work at a desk (with the iPod lying on the desk) - so it doesn't get bashed around. I'm not using any case.
Does this sound like a known bug? Is there anything that I can do - or should I return it as a lemon to Apple?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Same problem here with my 8gb nano. The ipod haves these seizures when the random pausing occurs, and sometimes there's no sign of this problem. In my experience it's not a problem in the headphone plug, because this happens when the ipod doesn't move at all. I think that the flipping the back cover upwards makes the pausing worse. But I'm not sure. Does it with the ipod -earplugs and my 3rd party ones. In my case there is no skipping forward in the songs. But when the ipod has these seizures, the pausing happens 5-10 second intervals. The 1.1.1 firmware didn't help either.
I'm taking it to the local Apple repair shop tomorrow and let's see what they say. I hope I'll get a replacement right away, because I don't think that the problem is clear even to Apple.

  • Ipod 160 classic random pause

Ive read other people having a problem with their ipod 160classic randomly pausing for 2 secs then resuming play from where it left off. Ive also read this is probably an inherent design flaw with to small of a cache because it happens with larger files( i've only had it happen with my apple lossless files and wavs as opposed to my 256vbr mp3s). Is there any fix ive restored, my ipod defragged it, took off album art, and nothing helps. Nothings more annoying than having a random pause as your getting into the music then to have it continue where it left off. THe problem cannot be recreated its random if you rewind to where it occurred it wont repeat there but somewhere else. this happens 5 or more times per hour for me using the higher bit files.
I bought the 160 for the purpose of storing lossless files yet cant do it without this annoying problem is there a fix or a downgrade. Heck id be happy with no other features or color just to have it not pause while playing music. Ive also read that rockbox is not coming out for the classic and was hoping that might fix the problem. Any soulutions would be appreciated thanks for your time, -Shane

Hi Mitch, that is a really great point. I so rarely listen to the iPod undocked for extended periods, I decided to test it this morning.
I have been listening to it now, undocked for around 4 hours and have heard no pauses at all. Yesterday, it was pausing about every 10 minutes or so while playing in the dock. Maybe this is significant to determining the issue...
Thanks for asking the question, and leading me to a workaround..
It certainly means I can enjoy the iPod again, even if it's plugged into my HiFi using the headphone jack, and running on battery power. Still sounds great.
It would be nice if the device worked properly while docked, but I'm a lot happier now regardless.
    Cheers, Bill

  • Randomly Pausing Audio Playback/Restoring Question

My iPhone 3G will on it's own, randomly pause audio playback (Pandora, iPod) when a 3.5 mm jack is plugged in, this takes any-wear from 10 secs to 30 mins, and this never happens when I use Apple OEM iPhone headphones. I went to an Apple store and the proposed resolution was to restore my iPhone as new. So my first question is: if I restore my iPhone as new, load music and a few apps on it and this does not fix the problem, can I restore my iPhone to the current state that has all my apps and data? My other question is, does anyone else have this problem?
    Thanks!
    -Mike

    I don't have this problem.
But your question about restoring your phone to it's current state, yes. When you plug your iPhone into iTunes, right click on the phone in the column on the left and select "backup phone". (That is if iTunes doesn't automatically start syncing/backing up.) After that you perform a restore which erases the phones and updates to the current version. At that point, iTunes should prompt you to install the backup.

  • Random pause with docking station

I regularly use my 3g 20bg iPod with my docking station and line out to a stereo receiver. I recently replaced my original docking station with a universal docking station and have started experiencing random pauses during playback. It starts after playing for about 30 minutes or so and usually occures 3 or 4 times. Then, it is fine for for as long as I use it. If I stop playing it for several minutes and then start again, I get the same pasuing again. I am using the latest version of the software(v2.3) and have reset it and restored it multiple times over the past few weeks.

Is there a reason you can't go back to the original docking station? The problem is obviously with your new universal docking station. You might want to try and return it as defective.
I'm not sure what you can do to troubleshoot the problem within the docking station.

  • IPod randomly pauses

Just got a 30gb iPod video about a week ago, and it's started just randomly pausing while playing songs. Any ideas? And no, I'm not accidently pressing pause!

I got the same thing on a road trip this weekend. It mostly happened just after starting a song and it would often pause twice. I got that look from my wife like "You paid $400 for this?".

  • ITunes randomly pausing?

Sometimes while iTunes is playing, it'll just randomly pause. I haven't pressed any buttons and I'm not even in the iTunes program window.

I was using Vista32 and iT 7.5, since there were no drivers for iPhone for Vista64 and had no problems.
After 7.6 came out, I made a clean installation of iTunes 7.6 and started having those random pauses. At first iT starts up and I cannot do anything for a while. Then it starts to work, but after a while it freezes again.
I formatted my system and installed iT 7.6 right from the beginning before any other application. Same problem.
Since 7.6 supports Vista64, and I have 4Gb installed, I decided to format with Vista64. Again, I installed iTunes without any other application installed.
    SAME PROBLEM!!!

  • Does the 1.1 Update offer any relief from the "random pause" issue?

My iPod is exhibiting the "random pause" issue and is going to the Apple Store this weekend. In the meantime I'm going to install the v1.1 update, but just wanted to get some feedback on whether this fixed the problem for anyone else?
    Thanks.

  • Random pauses during media playback with WH-920 He...

Currently running Windows Phone 8.1 on a Lumia 925.
Bought a pair of Purity WH-920 earbuds when my old Senheisers bit the dust (after 3 years), and loved them for about 3 months... Had the right channel die, and the replacement pair only lasted a month before they went down with the same problem. Currently just got my second replacement pair... fingers crossed.
My question is related to playback after I got my first repalcement. I noticed that I was having a lot of problems with my music app and podcast app randomly pausing, requiring me to either wait 5-10 seconds before it would resume through the remote, or pulling the phone out to resume playback through the screen.
This issue seems to be related to the phone being in my pocket. If I use it on my desk with headphones, it seems to be fine, but as soon as it goes into my pocket the pausing issue starts. I'm being very careful to not crimp the cord in my pocket, my phone sits in it vertically with the headphone cord coming straight up and out... Is this a known issue with this product? If so, is there a way to fix it via a setting on my phone? It defeats the purpose of having headphones if I can't move while listening to them... It I want to listen to music while sitting still at my desk, I have speakers for that.
    Thanks in advance!

I have the same MB and CPU but I am using the onboard sound and have not had any problems with that.
I can recommand that you bump up your memory voltage to 2.6~2.7 and loosen up your memory timings to something like 2.5-5-5-8-2T.
Then remove all drivers from your Audigy, disable your onboard sound and remove those drivers, shut down and install your Audigy and boot up allowing Windows to find your new hardware and then install the drivers.

  • Random pauses during songs.

I've had my nano since november 2005, about a month ago while I was listening to it my ipod suddenly paused for no reason(I dont recall jerking on the headphone wire or jack at all).
Ever since then the ipod keeps randomly pausing during songs, the odd thing is it doesn't only do it when I wiggle the headphone jack, it does it sometimes even when its sitting flat on my sofa without anything at all touching it and alot of slack in the headphone wire. Also the ipod does it even when the hold button is on as well so it isnt the play/pause button.
I tried sending it to apple but under the reasons for replacing the nano there was no option for damaged headphone jacks so I chose "damaged dock port" since it is very close to the headphone jack, and I also wrote in the description that the headphone jack is broken. Apple sent back the same nano saying they couldn't find any problem with it so I'm out of ideas.
Oh and yes I've tried resetting it and everything.

hmm another question, when i try to open another service request to send my ipod in again, it says it cant because my ipod already has a service request open, even though ive already gotten my ipod back since last week when i sent it in...any idea how long it will take till i can send it in again?

could you please check if there is activity in the scrubbing window ...
... when the music pauses ? does the diamond in the progress bar continue to move or does it stop ?
also, could you please tell us more about your setup ? do you keep your iTunes library locally or e.g. on an external HD ? if the latter, is the HD connected directly to your Mac or is it hanging off e.g. an airport base station ?
lastly, what's your exact version of iTunes ? go iTunes > about iTunes. is your version 9.1.1 (11) ?

  • Heres a solution ot the random pauses in games

the random pauses in games can apparantly be caused by incorrect/poor latency timings for the AGP slot. There is software that lets you mod this and its on guru 3d .com

    enjoy

Atitool is better for changing ONLY videocard latency as Pci Latency Tool does not always change latency on xp login even if one has used the program correct. Might be a Xp service tweak issue or something like that. Some people have had this problem. Atitool has worked every time for me, too, I 've set latency to 64.

  • Ipod nano keeps randomly pausing.

Ipod nano keeps pausing mid song and it's not the headphones... I've tried different sets of headphones & even held them in so they were flush. Still keeps happening. Been listening with no issue for about 2 hours before it started happrning all of a sudden. sometimes it will play 10 second sometimes it will [lay a few minuts but it always eventually pauses itself. Any ideas?

I just received my brand new 7th Gen iPod Nano today, ordered directly from the Apple website, and I am experiencing the exact same issue. I have tried several diffent pairs of headphones and regardless, the iPod randomly pauses. I also noticed that on occasion if I press play the iPod will indicate that it is playing music however no sound comes out of the headphones. It seems pretty clear to me the headphone jack is faulty... I suppose I'll need to get on the phone and deal with the highly inconvenient process of exchanging it. Very disappointed.

  • IPod 30gb video randomly pausing...anyone know why?

My 30gb video will randomly pause and will only unpause if I hit the play/pause button. Anyone have a suggestion?

When you unplug your headphones the iPod automatically pauses, so it could be a problem with your headphones or possibly a faulty headphone jack. Try a different pair of headphones.

  • Mini Randomly Pausing

Hi, Could anyone provide me with some info as to why my mini keeps randomly pausing. This happens with or without the hold button on. Also, does anyone know if Apple provides any sort of callabrating program for the mini or any other of the ipods?
Thanks and Have a Great Day,
    Sean

    Hi seandemeter,
Unfortunately you have found yourself in the wrong discussions board! This is for the Mac Mini (little computer), not the iPod Mini. Here is a link to the place you need to be asking the same question - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=834 - there are more iPod "know it alls" over there!
Hope you get your problem sorted
