Random People On My Buddy List

I just signed onto iChat for the first time today, and I am seeing random people on by buddylist, most of which are computers... i think.
Is there a reason for this?

Hi
This thread explain what you're seeing?
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=993997&tstart=0
Having said that, I haven't seen this problem (could it be my setting of Allow people in my Buddy List is stopping me from getting them? (This aimed at Ralph more than you)).
Are you just using iChat or are you using AOL Instant Messenger?

  • I have a problem sending e-mail to people in my Buddy List.

I keep information about people in my buddy list. I keep the information in the blank for their first name and last name goes. this way when I contact them or they contact me, I can roll over their name and all of the information is there for me to see who I am talking to.
Here is the porblem. If I send them an e-mail, all of that information appears in the "To" line of the e-mail. What can I do about this problem ?

Then I believe you must leave the First and Last Name lines blank. I believe OS X Mail will insert whatever info is in those 2 lines, even if they are blank, into the "To" line of your outgoing e-mail.
If you do not find an acceptable solution here, and if you do not want to use a different e-mailer app that does not use the info from OS X's Address Book, you might try posting your question in Mail & Address Book Discussions to see whether any of the users who post there might have better suggestions.

  • One other user & I can no longer see each other in the buddy list

My friend & I, who have used iChat for years, and also recently, and neither of us has changed anything, can no longer see each other in either one of our buddy lists.
    We've checked:
    - That neither of us is blocking the other
    - That other people can see us - they can
    - That we can see other people - we can - we can even see the same people as each other, just not each other
We've tried blocking & unblocking each other, in case that would reset something, and both rebooted our Mac's several times.
    Any ideas???

    Hi,
I can see that Accounts/Screen Names can get messed up on the various flags set by an App to and therefore On the AIM servers.
What I can not see in this case is why it seems to be limited to just one Buddy on each computer.
As the Block list (And therefore presumably Allow Lists) are not actually shown in the .p0list I ma hoping that deleting it and restarting ichat at one end at least will reset that iChat form the Defaults haled in the app when you do this.
(you could delete that Account Screen Name from iChat ? Preferences > Accounts to achieve the same things in a more destructive way as it would tend to rewrite all the .plists which may included Jabber ones that are OK
We both did delete our screen names in iChat, and also deleted ALL the prefs manually.
Also, we've tried using entirely different computers to log-in to those same accounts, with the same results - somehow we're blocked from each other.
I think we're both giving up at this stage. We have additional accounts we can use to see each other. But it would be really nice to get to the bottom of it, because if it happens once it can happen again. Who knows? Maybe there are other people in my buddy list that this is happening with right now, but we don't know it. This person just happens to be someone I chat with a lot, and we noticed we weren't seeing each other.

  • Migrating a buddy list

I have a .mac account that my daughter has been using for IM purposes for about 3 years. I now want to use the IM id for my use and get a new .mac account for her.
    My questions are:
    1. Do I need to get her .mac account for IM purposes or is a there a different/better alternative.
    2. She has a LOT of people in her buddy list and I want to migrate the buddy list to her new name/.mac account. How do I go about doing this migration?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re 1) AIM Screen Names or a Trial @Mac account are both free.
Re 2) This is where AIM for Mac (4.7) can come in useful as it has an Export and Import Feature

  • My iphone 4 randomly dials people in my contact list.

My iphone 4 randomly dials people in my contact list.  Any suggestions?  It may be people in my Favorites list.

My wife's phone does this, as well as delete apps...it's because she doesn't bother to lock the phone when she puts it in her purse by tapping the sleep/wake button. Not saying this is the case with you, but I've seen this before & that's the reason why.

  • New (unknown) people on my bonjour buddy list

    hi folks,
so here's a weird one... a week or two ago, i noticed other users on my bonjour buddy list at my studio... just as a precaution, i changed the password on my wireless router, shut it down, and powered in back up, in the event these folks were piggybacking onto my wireless signal, but they're still there.
i even went so far as to message one of them, asking (as politely as i could) if they were on my network, and they promply disappeared without responding.
any idea on this? it's probably not a big deal, but i'm just curious.
    thanks!

    Hi wymanwyman,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
Unfortunately for the Bonjour side of things it is a little more difficult to be as secure as you wnat.
It is Zero Confiuration and that does not need any routing or other settings for the Mac to discover other Macs.
    Start here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107800
One wat is to change the Workgroup name that Rndezvous/Boinjour uses to do this.
    In Applications/Utilities open Directory Access
If needed use the padlock and your Admin password.
Click on the line with SMB at the bottom of the list
    Click the Configure Button.
In the Popout change the WORKGROUP name to something that only you would know/use.
    Click Ok/Apply.
This should stop other people accessing your Network via Bonjour or it's previous name Rendezvous.

  • Buddy list not showing

When I open my iChat, the offline buddies appear but will not display as online. I know that people are online and using their chat, but I cannot seem to get Chat to display available contacts. Have I done something wrong?

    Hi,
GO to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server settings tab and change the port to 443
This is for the TCP login.
iChat also uses this port on the UDP protocol to get feedback for the Buddy list so this port needs to be open on UDP in the Mac Firewall IF ON and in any routing device.

  • How can I see my jabber buddy list as a default and not a new message window on my message app??

I recently got my OS reinstalled and since then I had a multitude of issues.
    1) my texts kept showing up on my macbook pro so I took my cell number off the preferences on messages on macbook.  Can I still have people facetime me using my cell phone number?
    2) I do see my jabber buddy list when I click on the message center as a default.  I keep getting the new message window, can i set a default that when i click on it I see who is online vs. having to go to windows and select buddy list all the time??
    3) what is bonjour and why would i want to use it?

    Hi,
    Re 1)
The settings for Messages > iMessages are separate from the FaceTime ones on both Mac and iOS devices.
    Re 2)
If you have a Jabber (Google or Facebook Chats included) ID in Messages > Preferences > Accounts you can go to the Window Menu and display them.
By default they are a combined list (Any AIM, Jabber, Yahoo or Bonjour account that is logged in)
In the Preference > General section you can untick the item that gathers them into one list to show them separately.
They also appear in the Window Menu separately with their open CMD + # keystrokes.
Once you have them On show quit the app that way.
It will "Remember" that they were on Show the next time you open the app.
    Re 3)
Bonjour is a process on the Mac that "sees" all other Macs on your LAN and shows them in the Side bar of the Finder window as "automatic" Shares.
In iChat and Messages it is an included account that cannot be deleted
If Enabled it can have it's own Buddy List (see 2) )
It shows the Names of the peopel singed in on the other Macs on your LAN that are also using iChat or Messages with the Bonjour Account Enabled.
The name is taken from the My Card in the Address Book or Contacts app.
The My Card should have the Mac User's details (you on Your computer when Logged in) and a head and Shoulders icon.
    I have three computers
One is running iChat 4.x.x and on that machine (running Leopard) the My Card calls me Ralph G4 as it is running on G4 tower.
My Laptop has me as Ralph MacBook Pro
This iMac I am posting from has the My Card of Ralph Johns
On this computer if I have iChat running on the other I see Ralph G4 and Ralph MacBook Pro as "Buddies"
It can do everything that the AIM and Jabber logins can do.
Text Chat, Audio Only Chat, Video Chat, Screen Sharing, File Transfers etc.

  • Duplicate entries in iChat AIM Buddy List

Just got a new Mini, set it up and opened iChat - for some reason all of the Buddy entries in my Buddy List are listed twice.  If I try deleting one of the entres it deletes both; logging directly into AIM has each listing presented only once.  How do/can I fix this and get the list properly displayed?

    Hi,
I use iChat 6 with separated Buddy Lists (See the iChat Menu > Preferences > General section)
This is because I have several Buddy lists that Login to AIM and I did not want some Buddies being Duplicated where I have them in different lists.
Having said that I just linked them and they did not seem to be duplicated.
I have heard of people getting this Doppelganger type thing if they have linked either Facebook or GoogleTalk chat accounts to AIM Buddies in which case they seem to be "reflected" back via Google or Facebook to iChat if you list your Facebook/Google account as well as your AIM one.
It may also pay to check your Address Book if your are seeing people via their "real names' as shown in the Address Book.

  • Company is merging with another company. How do I add other company's Bonjour/Messenger buddy list to our company's Bonjour/Messenger buddy list?

So the company I work for is merging with another company. Our company already has an internal Bonjour/Messages set up so that we can all communicate to each other. The company that we're merging with has the same.
How do I merge their Bonjour/Messenger Buddy List with our Bonjour/Messenger Buddy List so it's all in one list?
    Much thanks!!!

    Hi,
It will depend how and where the other computers are.
Broadly speaking any Mac computer on the same LAN using iChat or Messages with the Bonjour account enabled will see all the other Macs (The app reads the computer User's Contacts App (Address Book) My Card and broadcasts the name)
This works up to the point you go beyond 255 computers or devices.
The router will have one IP allowing for 255 devices to be connected.
    To state this another way.
The Bonjour account in Messages or iChat is a self connecting, self populating Buddy list.
Your Name is read from the Address Book on older systems or the Contacts app in Mountain Lion and above  at the one called the My Card and this is broadcast as your "Screen Name".
You see the names in the Buddy list that correspond to other peoples My Card.
On this iMac I am using I am "Ralph Johns"
On my G4 tower I am "Ralph G4" and on my laptop I am "Ralph MacBook Pro"
This means if I hook up the three using Bonjour I know which is which.
(As an aside this also allows me to separate them out on AIM and Jabber lists as well as I have the My Card for this computer and Address Cards for each others)

  • IChat does't display buddy list when opened & shuts down when opening prefs

I just did the software update and like some other people am having some problems. When I open iChat, the buddy list doesn't come up and I didn't see anything in the menu bars to open it. Also, when I open preferences the program just shuts down before prefs opens. Please help me out if you know how to fix it! Thanks

    Go to Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.plist.
    Restart iChat.

  • Turn off Preview in buddy list on left hand side of Message in Mac Mountain Lion?

    Hi
Does anyone know how to turn off the two line preview on the left had side of the buddy list in Message on Mountain Lion please?
I dont like people being able to see what I've been chatting about, even if it is only a few words.
    Thanks

What you need to do is move your cursor in between the message list and the message. Click and drag the message list all the way to the left. It will leave only the icons of the user.

  • Idea for an alternative buddy list-

i think it would be cool if instead of names, ichat gave you an option where it would only display your buddie's icons (and the name would appear when your mouse hovered over the icon). you could have the ability to increase or decrease sizes, so your significant other's icon could be at the top of the window, a full two-square-inches; while eight or however many people you don't know as well could occupy a line beneath it.
if you could arrange and resize the icons, i think that would be really handy; as it would allow you to have the same information in a less cluttered way.
i find it frustrating both that i have to display everyone- even if they are off; and that i get multiple copies of the same person if they have two screen names.

    Hi Jordon,
I currently have 179 Buddies in my list.
The largest group is one of 67 for new testers that I keep for a while when they test with me.
Even if I keep it showing On-Line Buddies (See Defcom's instructions) like I do I still can't get all-oline Buddies on the screen.
However your suggestions do seem to have some merit. I could also see theat a Pop-up Buddy icon might suit some people, such as top of the Buddy list near yuo own Buddy pic and linking arrows when Chatting with possibly a small icon to show type.
At present it is not possible to have the list apart in some form of order and short of redoing people's "Real" names their is no way of changing this (Although combos of doing one and then another will produce Alphbetical Availablity). I could see that people would also want the abiliy to order the list to their own spefications or just drag them into the order they want.
I could see that some would even want the Buddy List to Display Columns.
Feedback is certainly the place to go with this.
    Ralph

  • Auto populate buddy lists/roster

I work for a school district and we have set up our iChat server using mac os 10.4.9. What I would like is when a user logs in they will see other users from their groups. So what I am asking is how can I make auto poulating buddy lists or "rosters" in the users ichat...If any one knows a way to do this..it would be a great help. We have 35000 users already pluged in to our openLDAP if this helps...

With 35000 users I guess this is a transient community and the buddy list needs to be tightly integrated with the LDAP setting. Using apple tools, there is no easy way (well no way at all) to do this. If you are conformable at doing a little software development you should be able to achieve what you are wanting with Fljud. I was in the process of putting together a package that does as you asked, and many people ask, but with 10.5 almost on us I'm not sure i'll bother to finish it.
The base server design for 10.5 is different and has a number of very important changes that make it work with such a enterprise size deployment.
So - I guess I'm saying, if you plan to move to 10.5 in the near future, that is your best bet. If you will stay with 10.4 for sometime to come - expect to do some software development/configuration. One work of warning - passwords are plain text in 10.4.x for ichat logon. If the server is hacked is any way then all the passwords are there in plain text for all too see.
