Hi again,
We all need a little more info. How long has this been going on, did it just start, has it always done this since you purchased the iMac, does it happen around the same time each day, does it happen after a certain amount of time using the Mac, have you recently moved it, does it only happen when you watch videos and surf the net, etc etc etc...
If this has been an ongoing problem, I would try a new outlet. If this just started recently, I would make sure the power cord is firmly seated. If recent and you have not changed your normal routine, I would suspect a possible power supply problem. It's hard to tell until you tell us more details...
When you're watching videos or even surfing the net and watching youtube or something like that, your Mac uses a little more CPU power which will make it run a bit warmer, when a Mac reaches continuous and unusually high operating temps, it will shut off for self protection... *but watching videos and/or surfing the net should not normally cause this.

Random power failure / shutdown?
Hey all,
I recently purchased the 20" 2.4 GHz and have been experiencing random power failures. Right in the middle of typing an essay or watching a movie, my computer turns off unexpectedly. Has anyone else experienced this problem or know what might be going on? The only things I could think of are static buildup/discharge in the power supply or overheating...
Thanks!iRocket wrote:
I have a iMac G5 (purchased 5/05) and I never had an issue with it other than having to manually connect to my home network) Recently (last week) I called Apple Support about my network issue and we did a commandoption+PR during powerup. This is the first time it was ever performed. Since then My iMac turns off (completely) randomly. It doesnt matter if I am surfing the web, watching a movie, or the machine is idle doing nothing, and BAM no power. I'm glad I bought the 3 year Apple iCare package, because it seems that Apple knows in about 3 years, the machines begin failing.
I performed the SMC procedure about 30 minutes ago. I will update this post if I no longer have the loss of power issue again.
That vintage of iMac (and eMac) had a problem with bad capacitors (the problem hit other manufactureres than Apple, too.) If you open up the case and look at the logic board, see if any capacitors (the little barrel-shaped doodahs) are swollen or leaking brown fuzz. If so, Apple had an extended repair program for that, although you're lucky you have Applecare. If you're not comfortable opening the computer (that model is easy, just 3 torx screws along the bottom edge, though it's a little tricky getting the cover back on when you're done), definitely take it to a Mac tech ASAP, as this gets worse with time.

IMac i7 random power failure?
Hey there, my iMac 21,5 i7 has a random "sudden power failure", which has been diagnosed by an apple maintenance centre as a 'Logic board" problem. It was bought in Jan 2012 and it is plugged into a power surge/no break protection.
I've reset the SMC, changed power chord, power outlet and in the end took to one Apple maintenance centre in Rio, where I live, and the dignose was a deffective Logic Board, the solution being a replacement... which means it might be better to buy a new one... An apple computer that lasts ONLY ONE YEAR???
Does anyone have experienced similar problems? Any different feedbacks? Suggestions of apple techs in Rio de Janeiro???
Thanks in advance!Hello, sad case, but Macs aren't what they used to be, & yes, without AppleCare, a Logic board replacement will be terribly expensive.
Can only say that everybody needs to get the 3 year extended Applecare when getting an iMac or Laptop.

HI all - Help!
i Have a 2012 iMac.
Once or twice in the last few days it shut off on me randomly while I used it without warning. I thought it was a quick power outage but by the 3rd time it happened I looked at everything else plugged into the same power strip and it was staying powered. I plugged the imac directly into the outlet and same result. As well as plugging it into another outlet on another circuit. The issue is the computer - not the power its feeding from. We havent had any thunderstorms in the area for a week now so it wasnt caused by a storm. There were no tell-tail signs of strange happenings before this happened either. I DO use boot camp on it and PC game regularly but I have made sure the computer never overheats. So I couldn't have fried anything to the best of my knowledge.
Now here I am a few days later and i cant even get the computer to finish booting up before it will lose power. Any clue on how to fix this? I dont have apple care (Ive never once had an issue with an apple product) and I dont have the money to just go buy a new iMac. Has anyone had this issue before? It could be a more serious problem, but it kind of sounds like maybe a bad, loose or partially seated RAM module.
If you have upgraded or added RAM, do and test each of the following steps.
1. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in there slots.
2. Check for a bad module, install the modules one at a time in the top slot.
3. Install the original modules in the original slot that they came in.
If you did not upgraded or added RAM, you can do step 1 before making a Service Appointment.
1. Check to make sure that all the modules are firmly seated in there slots. -
# Question
When the program gets terminated unexpectedly (power failure, UPS fails), when I reopen it, it usually does NOT return the previous pages, as I have checked in the 'options' box, but goes to some random collection of pages often from months ago. Very frustrating - can anything be done to COMMAND it to save current pages and re-open there? (As I said, I have this box checked in the options, but it does not work ..Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode? -
G5 Power failure during start up and wake
I have an early G5 20" non-iSight iMac that has a power problem that is steadily getting worse.
As Apple support has expired and can't be extended, I'm at a loss how to resolve this.
Description.
The problem first started as intermittent during wake up from sleep (power light pulsing). I'd move the mouse or tap the keyboard to wake the iMac and I'd hear the disk just start to spin up followed by a sharp 'pop/click' like the power cord had been pulled, and it would be powered off needing the power button to be pressed to restart from scratch.
Now the problem has worsened in that occasionally I will find the iMac has completely powered down during sleep. When I restart it can take up to 6 or more attempts to get to the point where I can use it. There's a sequence of restarts needed, each starting from pushing the power button, and then ending during the starting sequence with a 'pop/click' as the power suddenly shuts off. Each time the start up will progress a little further than the previous attempt until eventually it finishes building the desk top after login and I can operate normally until the next time I find it powered off after a few hours of non-use. The power failure starts initially from just after the welcome chime, and progresses to maybe 5 or 6 times later to during the desk top build after log-in. However, once logged in and operating the iMac behaves as normal, switching users, log-out and login, screen save and wake from screen save etc are all as I'd expect. I've not (yet at least) had any sudden power failures during normal operation.
The serial number of the iMac falls within the Sept 05 Repair Extension Program serial number range (not EMC 2056 though), but when I spoke to Apple Support they said that the lack of random behaviour meant that the problem I'm having is not related and so would not be covered by this program.
So I'm kinda stuck with a problem that is annoying when it occurs, which is daily at the moment, although it's been this bad a few weeks back and then was fine (iMac left switched on for 2 to 3 weeks without a problem) until we had a power cut earlier this week, and it's started again.
I've searched through the forums and while I could find plenty of references to 'Sudden Power Loss' none seemed to be as predictable and similar to this one.
Suggestions and ideas welcome. Thanks.i am having a similiar issue. I have the same exact computer (iMac G5, non-isight) and it stays on for 30 mins, hour, 3 hours and shuts off. Upon starting up, sometimes it doesn't make it to the login screen before shutting down again. I have downloaded heat temp monitor programs and it seems to get to about 70 degrees celcius sometimes. Upon restarting, I get the "report problem to apple" screen with this information. I have tried to restart the power supply too.

Hi,
I am using Windows 8.1
I have an External Hard Disk i have partitioned it to 4 parts.
One drive is now inaccessible due to sudden power failure while listening Music from that drive few days ago.
Now it shows "Data error (Cyclic redundancy check)".
I tried all the procedures provided here like
chkdsk /f, diskpart, rescan etc
but no result :( (i mean all processes failed. They could not detect the drive).
Please help me to get those data, pictures and project files.
thank youThen why aren't you posting this in the Windows 8 forums found @

Hi
I had a power failure 2 days ago, my computer is running again, but now I cannot send email from my iPad using Cox or my gmail account. I am receiving mail in my Cox account but not my gmail account. It was working fine until the power failure. It keeps telling me, the user name or password for Gmail is incorrect. I have not changed anything. I don't know what is wrong. Can anyone help me? ThanksI agree, unplug and replug your router, then reset your iPad by holding down the sleep and home buttons, ignore the red power down slider, and wait til you see the silver apple. let it reboot and then try your connection.
Chances are rebooting the router will help. You may also need to talk to cox. They may need to reset something on their end. -
I've tried 3 UPS's (2 APC and one TripLite) that state they are OSX compatible, however, they do not fully respond to the native osx setting in (system Preferences/ Energy Saver/ UPS/Start up automatically after a power failure). This is what happens:
During a power outage, the OS does a graceful shutdown, but does not reboot when power is restored.
Apparently, the UPS is not notified to turn off during the shut down process. The power (on-Off-On) cycle is required by the mac to restart.
Trip lite tech support says they have software that works with Windows and linux to do this, but not mac.
I've tried two older APC UPS's, One Smart UPS1500 and a Back-UPS 1500 with the same result on two different servers and one iMac.
At this point I'm looking for a make and model of a UPS that does work. If anyone can verify a make and model that actually does this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Its a simple test, just pull the plug on your UPS, wait for the system to shut down, and then plug the UPS back in. The system should reboot. Many of the CyberPower UPS units are compatible. Checkout the home solutions on this page: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems.html

Unable to register with Genius bar for a 'power failure' repair????
Hi
Does anyone have any suggestions what to do about registering for a repair?
The online system has just been giving me a busy all day.
I need to take my iMac in for the famous power failure repair. Is the best thing to call them in the morning? Any special options I can hit so I don't get through to Apple Care?
Thanks
AndrewHi Andrew,
I don't know if you've gotten in yet, but if not the secret is to try to schedule an appointment around midnight. The slots at the Genius Bar fill up quickly and I would find that even if I logged onto my local store's webpage to schedule an appointment at 7:00am, they were already booked. I decided to check it at midnight and I was finally able to make an appointment.
It's ridiculous, I know...and if you mention it, they'll just try to get you to buy ProCare for $99 so you will have access to the calendar to schedule a week out. -
I'm having strange random connection failures. Are there ineffieciency in my config?
I've been having strange, random connection failures and I'm trying to eliminate possible causes.
What happens is while I'm browsing on the net over wifi, a link will at random not connect to the site, but instead fault to the ISP error page. It happens with highly reliable sites like google, or ebay, or whatever. If I direct connect to the cable modem, the problem site is immediately available.
I'm sitting <6 feet from a 871W router (with antenna). There's one router in my building and others are at my neighbors.
Below is the conf file. Just to imagine how rediculious this problem is, here's a screen shot from a web page. This shows a web page I visited, and after clicking on a link (an embedded youtube video), the error showed up within the page itself.
Why would only some URLs fail to connect? Is there inefficiencies in my config?

I'm guessing that since overload is what--I understand--translates the one outside to the many inside IPs, that the suggestion to have only one overload configured means I should combine the two ip ranges into one.
I deleted 10.0.0.0 network. Changed the bridge references to 1 and vlan references to 1. Now wifi and ethernet should all be using the same internal network? That's the idea, right? Any more fat?

Unable to Load Windows 7 after a power failure
My windows 7 workstation was in a sleep mode when a power failure happened. after trying to power up the machine it tries to resume windows session but stucks after displaying an error unable to find saved session. it gives an option to either delete saved
session and boot or locate the session, but none of the periferal devices are responding, so I am unable to select either option.
I have a standard 102 logitech keyboard connected to that workstation. it works wen I select to enter a bios on the start up, but does not respond to any other prompts.
Any advice? In addition, try to boot into safe mode and check the results.

Hi I just bought HP Envy M7 Sleekbook last week and upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1 for Windows 8.
Now I have no sound and this is the error message I get:
This device cannot start. (Code 10) Status Device Power Failure (for Intel (R) Audio Display)
under Sound, Vieo and Game Controllers in the Device Manager.
Anyone else having this issue after upgrading?
Getting a new lappy is stressful enough but to alreay have issues is ridiculous
If the upgrade is not the issue could something have happened in transit? (I have an issue with the way Best Buy packed it for shipment and wonder if it could have been compromised)
Any help is appreciated. Or should Ibe taing this back to best buy and have them address it?
Thanks
PamAhmed, if your HP Envy has an Intel processor chances are it will be necessary to download new drivers for both sound and chipset due to compatibility issues with Windows 8.1. After 4-1/2 hours on the phone with various technical agents and a lot of frustration I finally got one who had the knowledge and training to resolve my issue. I believe he downloaded the new drivers from the HP support site. Good luck!!

Imac will not boot up after power failure
Does anyone know why i have to unplug the power cable from the back of my imac after every power failure at my home to get the imac to boot up. I've tried resetting the surge protecter and unplugging there. However, the only option is to unplug the cord from the back of the monitor/imac before it will boot up. Any ideas or is this a known bug.
You're effectively resetting the SMC.
If you're getting that many power outages you need to be using a UPS (Uninteruptible Power supply), not just a surge protecter.
Power interruptions at the wrong time can cause directory damage or even physical damage to the Hard Drive if the heads were reading or wriing at the time.
