Random printing or garbage without sending a print job to printer

HP Officejet Pro 8600 has suddenly started randomly spewing out page after page with one or two lines (or nothing) of garbage. Nothing is listed in the print job window when this happens and it will continue until the paper tray is empty. However, touching the red "X" on the printer screen cancels the print job, but it will start up again in just a few seconds. After several repititions of this process, it finally stops.
Why is this happening and what do I need to do to fix the problem? The printer has worked fine up until the last 2 or 3 days.

Hey Ingie,
How is the Officejet Pro 8600 connected to the PC?  (usb, ethernet, or wireless)
If USB, unplug the USB cable, restart the PC, and power cycle the 8600.
If Network (ethernet or wireless), unplug the router, wait for it to completely power back up, then power cycle the PC and printer.
If the unit continues to print random characters after the power cycling, then I would advise resetting this printer back to a factory state.  I will send the information to perform this type of reset to you via private messages.  Please check your inbox messages.  Before performing these steps, please read Bob_Headrick's thread on printer resets found here.

    What is the custom print option within Firefox to print the date without the time?
    (e.g. 04/08/2010 instead of 04/08/2010 11:15, noting that using the custom print option "&D", also includes the time...)

    Firefox can have multiple home pages if you wish. Each home page that will open when starting Firefox is separated by the "|" character.

  • How To Customise Firefox to Print the Date without the Time (Date/Time in Printing Defaults)?

    When printing within Firefox, what is the custom print option to print the date (e.g. 06/06/2010) without the date appearing after it (i.e. NOT 06/06/2010 11:15)?
    Note: even when the custom print option of "&D" is used, the time still appears...

    As far as I can tell, there's no built-in option to get the date printed without the time. It's hardcoded in a C++ file.
    As a workaround, you can enter custom text for the footer, but it would need to be updated every time the date changed. I can think of a couple ways to automate that:
    * An add-on (but I'm not aware of any add-on for this)
    * External process to push a new date into prefs.js, a settings file that stores your header/footer preferences, among others (but Firefox should be closed when you update this file, and it will be read when you restart)
    Not easy enough, I know.

  • Sending reports directly to a printer (commands) 10g Linux

    Hi,
    Quick question. I am trying to confirm what I need to pass to Oracle Reports Server in order to print directly to the printer (bypassing any Preview or PDF version of the report in Oracle 10g. I am using Linux. We just installed the printer on the server. I modified to the uiprint.txt file under the ORACLE_HOME/tk/admin to point to the new PPD that we copied for that printer to ORACLE_HOME/guicommon/tk/admin/PPD.
    Below is the report call I am making. I just want to verify that what I did was correct. I am currently receiving a FRM-41214: Unable to run Report. When I run the same report via the PDF option that displays in a separate browser window, it brings the same report up correctly.
    SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY('GENERICREPORT', REPORT_FILENAME, LOWER(:MODULE.MODULE_NAME)||'.rep');
    SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY('GENERICREPORT', REPORT_SERVER, 'rep_inpp37_gt');
    SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY('GENERICREPORT', REPORT_OTHER, V_OTHER);
    -- V_OTHER is my parameters that I pass, such as PARAMFORM=NO, READONLY=yes, PAGESIZE, ORIENTATION, DELIMITER=NONE, and parameters which in this case there are none.
    SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY('GENERICREPORT', REPORT_DESTYPE, PRINTER);
    SET_REPORT_OBJECT_PROPERTY('GENERICREPORT', REPORT_DESNAME, 'gt-ybs-p'); - this is my printer name
    V_REP := RUN_REPORT_OBJECT('GENERICREPORT');
    When it runs the V_REP line, that's when I get the FRM-41214 error. Just was wanting to verify if what I had passed for the printer commands is correct.
    Chris

    I forgot one important piece which is why I am asking the question. I am running the report within an Oracle 10g form. I pass all the parameters across to the Reports Server, as seen above. When I run via the PDF option, I just change the DesType to Cache and DesFormat =PDF. When I run with this, it works and displays the report in a new browser window.
    I just want to run the report with the exact same parameters but instead of generating a PDF, I want to run the report and send it directly to the printer without previewing it.

  • Sending a JPanel to the printer...

    All,
    I wasn't sure if this was the appropriate forum for this, but I couldn't find one specific to printint to a printer.
    I'm trying to send a JPanel to a printer.
    I have the following routine which seems to more or less work, but exhibits a few problems. I've gotten most of the code off a website.
    public class PrintUtilities implements Printable {
      private Component componentToBePrinted;
      public static void printComponent(Component c) {
        new PrintUtilities(c).print();
      public PrintUtilities(Component componentToBePrinted) {
        this.componentToBePrinted = componentToBePrinted;
      public void print() {
        PrinterJob printJob = PrinterJob.getPrinterJob();
        printJob.setPrintable(this);
        if (printJob.printDialog())
          try {
            printJob.print();
          } catch(PrinterException pe) {
            System.out.println("Error printing: " + pe);
      public int print(Graphics g, PageFormat pageFormat, int pageIndex) {
        if (pageIndex > 0) {
          return(NO_SUCH_PAGE);
        } else {
          Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D)g;
          g2d.translate(pageFormat.getImageableX(), pageFormat.getImageableY());
          disableDoubleBuffering(componentToBePrinted);
              // scale to fill the page
              double dw = pageFormat.getImageableWidth();
              double dh = pageFormat.getImageableHeight();
              Dimension screenSize = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
              double xScale = dw / screenSize.width;
              double yScale = dh / screenSize.height;
              double scale = Math.min(xScale,yScale);
              // center the chart on the page
              double tx = 0.0;
              double ty = 0.0;
              if (xScale > scale)
                  tx = 0.5*(xScale-scale)*screenSize.width;
              else
                  ty = 0.5*(yScale-scale)*screenSize.height;
              g2d.translate(tx, ty);
              g2d.scale(scale, scale);
              componentToBePrinted.paint(g2d);
              enableDoubleBuffering(componentToBePrinted);
              return Printable.PAGE_EXISTS;
      /** The speed and quality of printing suffers dramatically if
       *  any of the containers have double buffering turned on.
       *  So this turns if off globally.
       *  @see enableDoubleBuffering
      public static void disableDoubleBuffering(Component c) {
        RepaintManager currentManager = RepaintManager.currentManager(c);
        currentManager.setDoubleBufferingEnabled(false);
      /** Re-enables double buffering globally. */
      public static void enableDoubleBuffering(Component c) {
        RepaintManager currentManager = RepaintManager.currentManager(c);
        currentManager.setDoubleBufferingEnabled(true);
    }Now I get things to print by calling the printComponent method and passing in my JPanel. No problem, the scaling and all works.
    However, whether I scale things to fit the page, or remove that code, I get some strange behavior.
    The JPanel has a few JLabels scattered about in a GridBagLayoutt, in three general columns.
    However, I've noticed that some of the items in each column get truncated and have "..." tacked onto the end. But it doesn't do this to just the longest items, it also does it to shorter items, even if a longer one in the same column was NOT truncated in this manner.
    So, what I'll have in one column is something like:
    A long line that's been truncated...
    a short line, no problem
    a short line truncated...
    longer than above, not truncated
    On screen, it's normal. Printed out, those weird truncations occur.
    Why is this happening? There's plenty of room, and each of the lines that are getting truncated could easily be 1-1/2 times their length without the danger of bumping into the next column.
    Is there any way to for me to force it to print the entire line?
    Thanks!

    ADDENDUM: Another problem I'd like to solve is that, the JPanel is gray with black text. I'm fine with that onscreen, but when it prints out, it prints a gray rectangle for the panel, with black text on it. Is there any way I can have this not print out the background as well (ie: treat background as white and only print the text that's on the JPanel?)

  • OS X sends job to printer, but the printer never prints the job

    All,
    Hello. I have a Mac running OS X 10.4 Everytime I try to print a document, I can see in the Print Queue menu where it says sending job to printer, then it says completed. But no lights come on on the printer and no job ever prints. The printer is acting like it is not communicating with my MAC, but my MAC thinks it is connecting to the printer. First I tried on my local printer, then I tried on my network printer and the same thing happened.
    I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my printer but that didnt work either. I am planning on checking the CUPS log as well but since the MAC says job completed and didnt give any errors I am thinking that CUPS will not have any errors either.
    My next step is to repair disk permissions, then Reset the Printing System.
    Anyone else have any ideas? Am I barking up the wrong tree so to speak? I am not sure of the software version but I am thinking its OS X 10.4. Im going up to check now

    We're having JP's issue on a Mac here on our campus as well.
    My user is running a 2.0Ghz iMac and printing to a laserjet 8150 via IP Printing. Up until this week everything has worked fine. Now when a document is printed from any program it goes into the queue and then gets moved to the "completed jobs" with no errors reported, but no acknowledgment by the printer and no errors produced.
    Same model Macs print to this printer without issue. I tried redirecting to another lj8150 on the next floor of the building and got the same result.
    Here's what I've done without success so far:
    -Restarted the printer and Mac
    -uninstalled/reinstalled the printer
    -ensured all Mac and MS Office updates were installed
    -reset Mac Print System
    -uninstalled printer, reinstalled HP drivers for laserjets, reinstalled printer
    At this point I'm ready to start looking system issues, viruses, etc. One thing I caught just before leaving the Mac was a download of limewire filesharing software [and virus hotbed]. So I'll add that to my list of investigations.
    All other network functions seem to be operational except the printing.

  • 6600 Won't print in black without full complement of color cartidges

    Just experiencing this inability to print balck or greyscale without all the color cartridges, which I don't use.  This is one of the sleaziest practices I have encountered in the industry.  Both the software and the manual contain outright lies.  Instead of fooling around with these apparently useless and deceptive responses from HP, as a recently retired attorney with a lot of time on my hands I'll pursue my own solution - I'm filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission for unfair trade practice.

    Page 72 of the Officejet 6600 user manual says the following: Printing with black or color ink only
    For regular usage, this product is not designed to print using only the black cartridge when the color cartridges are out of ink. However, your printer is designed to let you print as long as possible when your cartridges start to run out of ink.
    When there is sufficient ink in the printhead, the printer will offer you the use of black
    ink only when one or more of the color cartridges are out of ink, and the use of color ink
    only when the black cartridge is out of ink.
    • The amount that you can print using black or color ink only is limited, so have replacement ink cartridges available when you are printing with black or color ink only.
    • When there is no longer sufficient ink to print, you will get a message that one or more cartridges are depleted, and you will need to replace the depleted cartridges before you resume printing.  -------- HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers: Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example, or for an all-in-one see the Officejet 8040a.Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 7110 printer.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6600 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.  The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.  If you never print in color a laser printer would likely be a better choice.  If you occasionally print color but mostly black an IPH printer like those in the first category above may be a good choice.

    Hi,
    Did read my above reply & tried in the system . Clearly written, you need to set Dispatch time as 4 {Send immediately (when saving the application)} in NACE t.code in application EF & in condition record t.code:MN04 for PO message type. Then only PO can be printed or PO can send by e-mail AFTER PO RELEASE ONLY {ME29N/ME28}. Just try in the system 1st.
    .Do not get confuses as text written as u201Cwhen saving the applicationu201D for Dispatch time for 4 by having assumption that PO print or e-mail possible after saving in ME21N.

    Hi Crushed,
    Numbers doesn't have pages. It has a canvas that holds objects such as tables and charts.
    Drag the objects from the bottom of the canvas onto the white space above. That will reduce the number of "pages" (sheets of paper) that will print.

  • How to Print Crystal Report without any dialog message on the client side

    Hi!
    I've read too much questions like this, but i can't find any answer.
    How can i print a report on the client side directly?
    I have three buttons, "Generate Report", "Generate PDF", "Print".
    I want when the "Print" button was clicked, automaticaly the report is printed using default printer, like PrintToPrinter function, but in the client side.
    Thanks!

    If you search for previous posts about this, you will see many posts saying not possible.  If this functionality was possible, you could essentially have a page that would send something to a clients printer just by visiting the page, how bad of security hole would that be?
