Random question about navigating with the keyboard

When I'm in the Finder on my work computer (10.5.x), I can hold the Apple key, and hold the up arrow, and I'll keep going up a level in a folder, until I'm at the hard drive root.
I use this as a quick way to jump up a bunch of levels in a folder.
On my home computer (10.6.4), when I do the same keystroke, I only go up one level and it stops.
I have to release the up arrow and hit it repeatedly.
Is this a change in 10.5 to 10.6, or is it some preference that's set somewhere?

AFAIK, that's controlled by Finder->Preferences->General->uncheck Always open folders in new window and CMD+up arrow will cycle up to the top folder. Check it and CMD+up arrow opens a new window, requiring you to use the keys again. I prefer what you don't like. HTH

Navigating with the Keyboard in Mail / Shortcuts

I just transferred my mail from Thunderbird, and am having some difficulty adapting to Mail. I don't like viewing mail with the preview pane on the bottom, so I get rid of it entirely. I like to have each message pop up, and then navigate to the next one. However, I can't seem to figure out how to do this. After I've read the message in its pop-up form, there seems to be no way to navigate to the next one. Deleting it will bring me back to the inbox, but I'd like to just go to the next message. In Thunderbird, space bar or 'F' takes you to the next message. There seems to be no such keyboard shortcuts for reading through messages in Mail. How cumbersome! Is there any way around this?

There's no way around that, and I disagree that it's cumbersome; it's just different than what you were doing in Thunderbird. If you don't like having the Preview pane on the lower right side of the window, then you must deliberately open each message in it's own window and close it or delete it when you're done reading it. Once you've done that, you're looking at the Message Viewer window again with the remaining list of emails, which you can then choose from to open, mark, move, delete, reply to, or forward.
What you're looking for is a keyboard shortcut to close a window and then go to and open the next message. But that assumes the user wants to open the next message, and each user has different needs at different times, so that wouldn't work. Also, it's not at all hard to close a message or delete it: one keystroke and it's done; then you can go to the next message of your choice.

Some random questions about integration features

Greetings,
after working for a few weeks with Autovue's ISDK (web server) and having some sucess with its integration with our custom CMS, I have a few random questions about what can be done and what can't be done. So, instead of opening many new threads, I'll post them here together.
1) Translation. We are localised in Russia, and its translation is incomplete. I have found a tra_en.properties file in AutoVue/bin, and a description about how to create a properties file for custom actions. But no information about how to translate to other languages - and russian translation appears to be packed within the jar of the applet. Is there a clean way to translate, or refine the current translation, so we don't get a mix of russian and english commands in the applet? Because my tries using EXTRABUNDLES have failed, as I don't want to add a bundle for extra actions, but to replace it for existing ones.
2) Attachments in markups. Markups allow to attach other files, but since our CMS is custom, we only get the option to attach files from our local drives. We did no browse integration with the CMS, as people with different levels of permission will have different access to files there, and we considered unnecessary to provide that level of integration. We are considering to remove this action from the GUI, but before that I'd like to evaluate how hard would it be to generate an upload file action, so the attached file would be stored in the custom CMS and linked to it so the whole thing worked. My guess is "it will be hard and time consuming", so for now, we are considering to delete this feature in our integration.
3) Is there a way to resize the Open markup dialog? We have several properties displayed, and fit well within a standard screen, but the dialog is small and you have to scroll the table to see all properties.

Yes, now I see attachments are stored inside the markup file. The problem is, when I open markup mode for the attachment, since the attachment uses some kind of default access method, my url's from the integration with the background CMS are broken completely. I believe the ideal state here would be to make some kind of inner markup for the attachment, maybe stored within the original markup file along the attached file. Or maybe it works that way, and I need to access it with the default gui action instead of my custom one. If that is the case, is there any way to tell the gui file how to differentiate a standard opened file from an attached one? If so, the issue has solution. If not... Well, then maybe something escapes me.

How do you bookmark to a folder with the keyboard?

Since getting in to the habit of better organizing my bookmarks, I have bookmark folders that are up to three levels deep.
How can I save a bookmark to a specific folder without having to use the mouse or click "Choose..."?
It would be nice if there were a way to just type it, with folder suggestions coming up.
I.e. I would be able to hit Ctrl+D, type the name, hit tab, and type Classes\303\HW to have it bookmark to that folder. Right now, I can only bookmark to recently used folders with the keyboard.
I know this can be done with the mouse, but I am looking for a fast way with the keyboard, possible with a plugin of some sort.

I will check out the add-ons, see if there is anything that would make it a little faster, but the '''ctrl+d, tab, tab, space combination''' should be good enough for now, I'm surprised I missed that. I knew about the five most recent, but that wasn't enough for me.

How do you select a single image with the keyboard?

I can use the "/" key to deselecting the current photo but how do I select the current photo with the keyboard? Usually the space bar is used for this but that displays the image. Is the only way to select the current photo by using the mouse?

OK, now that the question has been clarified....
Pressing and holding the Shift key as you move through the grid with the arrow keys will individually multi-select them, but that breaks down if you want non-contiguous selections, i.e. lifting off the shift key to skip a photo will cause all previous selections to be lost when you use the arrow key to advance. I think the only way for non-contiguous selection is ctrl-click.

Questions about editing with io HD or Kona 3 cards

My production company is switching from Avid to Final Cut Pro. I have a few editing system questions (not ingesting and outputting, just questions about systems for the actual editors - we will have mac pros with either kona 3 or io HD for ingest and outputs)
1) Our editors work from home so they most likely will be using MacBook Pros - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz 4GB computers with eSata drives to work on uncompressed HD, will they be able to work more quickly in FCP if they are using the new Mac Pro 8-Core (2 Quad-Core 2.8GHz Intel Xeon) or will the mac book pro's be able to hold their own with editing hour long documentaries, uncompressed HD
2) Will having an AJA Kona 3 (if we get the editors mac pros) or io HD (for the mac book pros) connected be a significant help to the editor's and their process, will it speed up their work, will it allow them to edit sequences without having to render clips of different formats? Or will they be just as well off without editing with the io HD?
I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the necessity of the AJA hardware in terms of working with the editors to help them do what they have to do with projects that have been shot on many formats- DVCPro tapes, Aiptek cameras that create QTs and P2 footage.

1. with the IoHD, laptops become OK working with ProRes and simply eSata setups. Without the Io, they can't view externally on a video monitor (a must in my book). It will not speed up rendering a ton, nor will it save renders of mixed formats. The idea is to get all source footage to ProRes with the Io, and then the Io also lifts the CPU from having to convert ProRes to something you can monitor externally on a video monitor, and record back to any tape format you want... all in real time.
2. Kona 3's on Towers would run circles around render times on a Laptop... no matter what the codec, but the Kona does not really speed renders up. That's a function of the CPU and just how fast is it. (lots of CPU's at faster speeds will speed up render times).
I'd recommend you capture to ProRes with Io's or the Kona 3 and don't work in uncompressed HD. You gain nothing doing it quality wise at all. And you only use up a ton of disk space (6 times the size in fact) capturing and working in uncompressed HD, which from your post, you're not shooting anyway. The lovely thing about ProRes is that it's visually lossless, efficient, and speeds up the editing process. Mixing formats can be done, but it's better to go to ProRes for all source footage, and edit that way.
With either the Kona or the Io, you then can output to uncompressed HD tape... that's what they do for you no matter what codec you've edited in. ProRes is designed to be the codec of choice for all HD projects when you're shooting different formats especially... Get them all singing the same tune in your editing stations, and you'll be a much happier camper. Only reason to buy laptops is portability... otherwise you're much better off with towers and the Kona 3 speed wise.

I am not sure I am on the correct section in the support area for Lenovo.
I had a mouse issue. It was unable to read the mouse. Now the mouse is working and it is initialized.
I have no idea why.
There is an error message saying that I should press F 1or F2. I pressed down F 1 and I tried to work with it and I enabled the mouse or I tried. The mouse is working fine but the computer will not recover completely the way it used to.
It is very confusing. When I shut down and restart there is an message that was not there before about the pointing device. Also the recovering operation never asked me for disks. Now it is doing that. I have disks but this is all confusing. I just want the computer to be the way it was. It is working fine except for booting up and the messages.

Question about setup_MITE in the PCI-MIO-16E-1

I have a quick question about setup_MITE in the PCI-MIO-16E-1. In one of the manuals, it states that if you're using Dell Optiplex GX series for our hardware configuration, is it true we need to re-write the MITE functions to correlate with the hardware? Question about function with in parameters

I have a question about functions with in-parameters. In the HR schema, I need to get the minimum salary of the job_id that is mentioned as an in-parameter.
this is what I am thinking but I dont know if it's correct or not or what should I do next!

Is it possible to add that if the i_job_id which is the in type parameter does not have a minimum salary then use the following function to register an error:

Question about Communication with Oracle 7

Hi,
Generally we use Oracle Snapshots for Communication, but since Oracle 9.2.0.5 do not work with Oracle 7.1.5.2.4. we are thinking about do use Oracle Interconnect for this Link.
Now I have the following two Questions about Communication with Oracle 7:
1. Is an Adapter for Oracle 7.1.5.2.4 available?
2. From your experience, does it make sense to install Oracle Interconnect for implementation of only one read only Link with 3 Tables if an OAS for BI is available?

1. The Oracle database adapter is for Oracle 8i and up. I checked the code needed in the database and doubt that will work in Oracle 7.
1. The other option Advanced Queuing also needs 8i and up.
2. For me it doesnt make sense that you want to connect to Oracle 7. Oracle 7 is unsupported and should not have to be developed against. Also the license costs for Oracle Interconnect ~17K without any discount is a bit steep for read only links to three tables. Having the OAS means you wont have to pay another additional ~17K for the apps server.

Something weird with the keyboard

Hello everyone, i have this strange problem with my wireless keyboard. Everytime i type down a letter, it appears down as many times as i hold the button. Every letter, except X. It is the only letter that i can only type one time, even if i hold it down for several seconds. I don't think there is something wrong with the keyboard or the specific number, because when I hit it again and again the letter appears. Only when i hold it down it only appears once. I know this is not something to bother about, since i can type the letter, but i am curious to find out why this happens. If anyone could tell me, please, do not hesitate

Select discontiguous rows in a table with the keyboard

I am using jdk 1.3.1 and have tried this on 1.4 as well. I don't seem to be able to select discontiguous rows in a table using the keyboard. I can Ctrl-click with the mouse to do this but can't find a way to do this with the keyboard. I searched and found somebody asked this same question before and the reply was it works in 1.3.1. I am not seeing this. What could I be missing? The Ctrl-Up and Ctrl-Down keys don't do anything and neither does the spacebar.

I'm pretty sure you can't do this using the standard JTable interface.
You might be able to write your own keyboard listener and fake focus events for up&down arrow, but making this work seamlessly with JTable seemss like it would not be trivial.
