i followed some advice here (especially the psu debate) and built this march fourth, and it has been rock solid till about 2 or 3 weeks ago.  i was playing the farcry demo and the system reboots.  it happened again today while surfing and i'm kinda baffled as to why.  in both cases the electricity didn't go out, and my ups didn't beep.  it simply makes the sound it always does when it powers off and instantaneously comes back on. (there seems to be no delay) as you can see my psu has more than enough amps and wattage to run the little that i am. no case lights just 2 120mm fans. i ran memtest 86+ when i assembled it in march and no errors after many passes.  so i have absolutly no idea what is going on.
anyone have any ideas? i'd rather not flash the bios if i don't have to, as it seems it's the luck of the draw if it works or not on a fsr
thanks in advance.

ok i thought i had it figured out but it just happened again. i was using the radeon drivers from hell (cat. 4.6, the one that hosed a lotta boxes) so i downgraded to 4.4 (i'm on dialup, so i get every other driver release) and i had no reboot issues for weeks, but it just happened again. i checked out a number of things, including my u.p.s and think that it is either my mobo or psu.
has anyone had any problems with capacitors on their amd64 board? i'm thinking it's possible the psu is resetting because it's getting a false power off signal from the board. possibly due to the caps not haviing quite the right capacitance (electrolyte not quite right) it's not a "soft" reset because the you can hear the psu switching. so mabie it's an over-voltage / wrong signal issue?
has anyone had problems with their enermax psu? i know a few of you have them here because i took your suggestions when the big debate 6 months ago was about which psu to get. any voltage drops/spikes/other abnormalities that have caused any problems?
and as always, thanks
here's the specs again, gotta get them in my sig

  • Neo 3 Platinum random reboots

Hi, I have an old build as stated above that I sold to my son in law.  It has been working fine for about three years except the cheap power supply died about a year ago (it came with the box) so I replaced it with a seasonic.  Anyway, it recently has started to randomly reboot itself once or twice a day.  It's hard to believe it is the power supply.  If it was wouldn't it just turn off and not reboot?  I haven't had a chance to actually look at it yet but was wondering if anyone knew what would cause random reboots.  It isn't overclocked.  Thanks

PSU can also be blamed for random restarts. as the PSU heats up, the efficiency goes down and this my cause your system not to receive enough power, thus shutting down or restarting. i would suggest to test with a different PSU if all the memtests are OK and the system temps are within normal ranges.

  • K8T800 K8T NEO-FSR Memory Problems

Just a warning before I start in, this is a pretty long post. I'm going to try to include all the information I can.
Here's my system right now. It's running Windows XP Professional with all the latest updates.
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor. Not overclocked at all.
Motherboard: MSI K8T800 K8T NEO-FSR, latest BIOS updates from MSI
Video Card: ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, latest Catalyst drivers from ATI installed. Not overclocked at all.
Memory: Mushkin 184 Pin 2x512MB DDR400 PC-3200, running at DDR400 with Auto selected for all the memory timings in the BIOS. Memory placed in DIMM#1 and DIMM#2. Not overclocked at all.
Hard Drive: Western Digital 80 Gig
I started experiencing random reboots and critical errors in game applications on Sunday. The computer would randomly reboot at random intervals from Windows. In addition, while running games like Warcraft 3, Asheron's Call, or World of Warcraft I would receive frequent critical errors that certain sections of the memory could not either be read or written to.
I figured that there was some kind of problem with the memory, so I downloaded Memtest86 and ran it. The first stick of RAM was in DIMM#1 and the second stick in DIMM#2. This was the memory configuration during all the random reboots and critical errors.
Memtest86 came up with several failures during the 5th phase of the test. The same failures came up upon repeated testing in the same phase of the test. I decided to try to isolate the failure and see if one stick or the other was defective. I yanked out the second stick from DIMM#2 and left the first stick in DIMM#1. The first stick (which I'll refer to as the "good RAM stick") passed the memtest repeatedly. I then stuck the second RAM stick into DIMM#1 alone and the computer would not even POST.
I then moved the second RAM stick (which I'll refer to as the "bad RAM stick") over to DIMM#2 alone and managed to get it to POST. The bad stick failed the memtest with the exact same errors during the same phase of testing as the combined sticks had failed during the initial test. For the sake of completeness, I moved the bad stick over to DIMM#1 alone and finally managed to get it to POST. However, the bad stick passed the memtest repeatedly. Puzzled, I moved the bad stick over to DIMM#3 alone and tested it there, which it also passed repeatedly. I moved it back into DIMM#2 alone and it failed the test repeatedly again and again.
Intrigued, I then moved the good RAM stick into DIMM#2 alone, to try to see if perhaps there was some kind of motherboard error occurring. The good stick passed the memtest repeatedly in DIMM#2. I then moved the good stick into DIMM#3 alone and it passed the test repeatedly in that slot.
After checking the motherboard manual to make sure I could do it, I put the bad stick in DIMM#1 and the good stick in DIMM#3 and ran the memtest. The combined sticks passed the test where previously, while configured in DIMM#1 and DIMM#2, they had failed it. I moved the sticks back into DIMM#1 and DIMM#2 to test again. The combined sticks failed as they had during the initial test.
I then reconfigured the sticks to DIMM#1 and DIMM#3 again and booted up the system. Although I only had limited testing time last night, I seemed to be totally stable. The system did not reboot at all and I actually managed to play WoW for an hour without a single crash.
Any suggestions on what's occuring? I figured that maybe the mobo's memory seating in DIMM#2 was messed up, but I wanted to get some more guidance from others.

Well if it's an Antec Sl-350, that one only has 16A @ 12V, way too little to handle your system.....
I would get another PSU in any case, as even the TP-380 is bare minimum.....
Go for the Enermax 465 it has 33A @ 12V and then you are sure it's not a power problem...
Also, a good PSU is never a waiste of money

  • K8T NEO FSR bad bios or bad CPU?

Hi - I just got a K8T NEO-FSR with an Athlon 64 3000 (newcastle) and 512 Meg of Corsair value select memory.  I installed everything fine and tried to install a fresh copy of windows xp home but I kept getting a blue screen of death and a registry error (from the CD!!).
I then reformatted my drive and put a copy of windows 2000 pro on it.  After updating the drivers, everything seemed to be OK.  But - I was getting a few random problems (CD stopped working, freeze, etc).  I was going to try to install XP but I thought I should probably upgrade the BIOS first just to make sure that wasn't the problem.
Well - I followed the instructions for updating the BIOS (I've done it before for other systems) and everything seemed to go smoothly until I tried to reboot.  Nothing - it powers up but doesn't do anything.  I assumed that something must be wrong with the BIOS.  I double checked which file I was using A6702VMS.180.
I then tried a BIOS recovery.  I reformatted a floppy on a windows XP machine and put a copy of the BIOS that I had backed up before the flash onto the disk named AMIBIOS.ROM.  Then I unplugged the power supply and every piece of hardware except the CPU, reset the CMOS, and let it sit for 15 minutes.  Then I reconnected the floppy and plugged in a PS2 keyboard into the back.  Pushed down CTRL and HOME and turned the power on.  Nothing.  Tried it again with each CTRL key and with the regular HOME key and the keypad.  Nothing.
The LED's on the back panel show all 4 red which the manual says is a bad CPU.  Could my CPU have died somehow?  Did I miss something obvious?
My power supply is an Enermax 350W with 32A on 3.3V, 32A on 5V, and 17A on 12V.
Any thoughts?  I'm a little annoyed that I can't find a definitive source for how many amps on each of the rails the main board and CPU need.  I've found widely varying advice on all of the boards I've read.
    Thanks,
    Ted

    Quote
    1) The PSU that you have is quite weak on the +12v Rail & could be the cause of your problems, most people on here recommend 20a on the +12v Rail.
I've seen people on various boards throw numbers anywhere from 15A to 30A for the 12V rail.  However, I haven't seen anyone quote any hard sources.  My back of the envelope computations:
CPU: 89 W (max power from AMD's web site)
    MEM: uses 3.3V
    Floppy: uses 5V
    CD: 20W
    RAM: uses 3.3V
    HD: 15W
    Geforce2 GTS graphics card: 8W
which gives me about 132W on the 12V rail at maximum power usage (which - since I haven't done anything I doubt I've hit).  This would be about 11 amps which is easily covered by my power supply.  And - the 89W number form AMD is for all the Athlon64 chips of which the 3000 is the very low end so it's probably less than that.
    Quote
    2) You may have faulty RAM & i would recommend running a memory testing program just to check that is ok.
Could the RAM be faulty even though I had a windows 2000 setup running reasonably well?  The BIOS did do a memory check on each startup (I turned that on when I first installed the board).
    Quote
As for the system not booting now, sounds like you have a bad BIOS flash & that you will need to get the BIOS reflashed or RMA your motherboard.
I don't think this board supports reflashing - the chip is soldered onto the board.  Any idea why the rescue procedure isn't working?

  • Still K8n neo2 random reboots !

few days ago had random reboots while using/quiting games!
almost try everything like testing other ram, Vga etc...
and face the trouble coming from voltage line drops (low 3.3v).
So decide to swap for better Psu and bought a hiper 480w type R.
but still have that fu..... reboot
try a single(noname) 512 ddr stick and hadn't the prob
like to know why dual channels ddr(512TwinX3200c2) don't work ?
In fact i bought k8n neo2 instead of k8n neo cause of the dual capability!!!!
    anyone could help?
    please help!!!

I've seen that happen on my older P4 when I overclocked it.  Games push your computer to the limits so it might be an issue with overheating or having the errors due to overclocking.

  • MSI K8T NEO FSR with AMD 64 3200 - Can´t install WIN XP

    Hi.
I´m writing you because i have a problem with an MSI K8t-Neo FSR.
    The description of my PC:
    MSI K8t-Neo FSR
    AMD 64bits 3200 (640 cache)
    HD 160 SATA Seagate Barracuda
    1gb DDR 400mhz
    Floppy 3 1/2
    CDRW 52x32x52 LG
    Video ATI RADEON 9600 XT
    The problem is the following:
When I try to install Windows XP, when I press F8 to accept the Terms, it shows me an error message (IO 104 i think) and it hangs up or reboot.
I tried with another two Proccessors and motherboards (same model obviously) but it didn´t work.
Could it be a defectuous production serie of that model????
Or what do you think the problem is????
Thank you very much for your help.
I´ll be waiting for your answer!
    Lucas Revale
PF: I´ve already tried updating the BIOS.

Thank you all for trying to help me!!!
I've already tried using only te necesary drivers.
I´ve also tried another VGA, another HD, another CDRW, another power supply, and an AMD 64 2800+.
It seems to be that the three motherboards i tried were defectous.
Does anyone has any other idea?!?!?
    I´d really aprecciate your help!

  • Random Reboots with dual channel

    Hi,
I just bought yesterday the following system.
Intel P4 2.8 Northwood HP enabled
    MSI 865PE/Neo 2 Platinum Edition
    Maxtor Diamond Star 9 200 GB 8MB Cache 7200rpm
    Elixir 2x512MB DDR 400 CL3
    Toshiba DVD 16x
    Creative Geforce 4 Ti 4400 128MB
Logitech Cordless Keyboard connected and a logitech cordless optical mouse
    19 inch belinea monitor.
The power supply is a no name product LPK2-30 with the following specs.
    420W
    3.3V 28A
    +5V 36A
    -5V 0.5A
    +12V 17A
    -12V -0.8A
It says that is P4 ready, i know which does mean nothing
    Operating System:
    Windows XP Professional SP1
    All Hotfixes and Updates applied
Newest drivers for all the system parts
The errors during the windows crashes are irq not less or equal or page fault, which looks for me pretty much like a problem with the memory.
Ok what i tried so far.
Single channel with 512MB works fine.
Single channel with 1GB works fine except one strange thing restarting the machine and it got stuck during the bios loading worked fine after i pressed reset.
Dual channel 1/3 1 GB get random reboots.
Dual channel 2/4 1 GB even worse but i think at this point my newly installed died.
I tried to set memory voltage from 2.65 up to 2.8 but did not change the behaviour.
memtest with one modules in slot 1 no errors
memtest with dual channel 1/3 1 gb no errors running 30 minutes
i will try now a memtest with the second single module in memslot 3.
No MAT or dot ram settings are 3,3,3.
I am bit running out of ideasö
before i forget i updated the bios from 3.3 to 3.5 but did not change the problems.
Maybe you guys have some ideas what else can i try.
thx a lot in advance. i hope i provided all informations which are necessary.
    greetings faxe

    Hi,
i tried a few more things which make confident that i have the problem narrowed down to the memory.
i tried to install windows again with only using the third memory slot single channel and it worked fine.
now i tried to go down with the memory speed to ddr333 and using dual channel and so far that seems to work too.
so i think i will go for other memory.
if you think i am wrong please correct me
    greetings markus

  • K8n neo-fsr (MS-7030) suggestion

    Hello,
    My system specs are:
    AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Newcastle Year 04 Week 26
MSI K8N Neo Official Bios 1.5
    1 GB PQI Turbo Memory @ 2.5-3-3-7  in slots 1 and 2
    PNY GeFORCE 6800 128 MB 325Mhz/700Mhz 12pipes/6vertexshaders
    Aspire 500w PSU 12V=34A
Maxtor 60 GB 2 MB cache on primary master
    52x32x52 CD-RW on secondary master
8x DVD Burner on secondary slave
    Standard Floppy
Logisys UV Blue Clear Acrylic Case with 4 case fans
    Logisys Clear Keyboard
    Creative Inspire T2900
    Creative Optical Mouse
NEC Multisync 1735NXM 17" DVI Flat Panel
    WinXP SP2
So right now I am running bios 1.5 and everything seems to work fine, except I get a few random reboots at windows xp startup sometimes right after I type my password I hear a "click" and reboot.  Would anyone happen to know why?
Also, more importantly, I haven't done anything with my computer since my initial set up and now want to upgrade my hard drives.  I looked around the forums and its tough finding posts about k8n neo1 anymore because its outdated, but I do remember users having lots of problems when I checked around this time last year.
So now I just bought 2 hitachi 160gb sata hard drives and would like to add it to my system.  Just plain sata works for me, I don't want to deal with RAID.  I am wondering what bios do you recommend, taking a glance at the forum shows me that bios 1.9 seems to have corrupted some peoples motherboards.  Do you have a recommendation for the best bios out there for k8n neo1?  At msi's webpage I see that now the most recent one is 2.1.
Could somebody please list out the advantages/improvements between different bioses because MSI webpage gives very little info?
    1.4 --> 1.5?
    1.5 --> 1.6?
    1.6 --> 1.7?
    1.7 --> 1.9?
    1.9 --> 2.1?
Also, are there any issues with this board and SATA hard drives, I recall seeing lots of posts about issues last year with raptors in specific but what about my SATA hard drives?
What nforce drivers should I use at this point in time to run SATA.  I've had a headache regarding nforce3 drivers since last year and am wondering whats the best release?  MSI webpage has 5.03, Nvidia official site has 5.10 and 5.11.
What audio driver is best for this board?  I currently use nvidia nforce audio pack 4.57 but that got updated to 4.62, what changes are there and is it worth the upgrade?
Do you think I need to be concerned with anything regarding this upgrade?  Otherwise, could you possibly lead me to some good forum threads regarding k8n neo1 about BIOS and SATA?
Sorry for a lot of questions all in one post but if somebody could help me out I'd really appreciate it.
    Thank you!

“Maxtor 60 GB 2 MB cache on primary master”
A 2MB cache HDD is asking for poor performance.  That “click” is probably your hard drive.  My HDDs make that noise when my PC turns off too.
I run either BIOS 1.4 or 1.7…if you are not having problems, stick with 1.5.
I just added three SATA HDDs to my system (see signature) and had no problems with either.
Use nVidia nForce 5.10, 4.62 audio, and something 7X.XX for video.
You should be good…plug that stuff in and go!  If you only have one PC, you may want to lay out exactly what you need to do first.  If you want to boot off a SATA you might need to change the HDD boot priority in the BIOS.

  • K8N Neo-FSR 4 Red LEDS

I put together an amd64 system:
    K8N Neo-FSR
    AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    1024mb corsair valueselect (2x512)
When I power on, I get 4 red leds on the dbracket, which is supposedly a damaged or incorrectly installed cpu.  I am 99% sure that both of the cpus that i tried were good, but I am 100% sure that one of them was.  I also tried reseating them a few times.  Is there anything else 4 red leds means?
Also, the computer turns on with the powers supply switch and the power/reset switches don't work at all even though they are plugged in to the correct places.  Anyone got any ideas?

I had the exact same problem. Thought it was the CPU, so returned it and got a new one, and the error continued. Here's how I got it to stop:
Take EVERYTHING off the mobo. All the PCI/AGP cards and the ram. You can leave your drives hooked up, but unplug the power from them.
Then, try to reboot it. When I did that, it finally got past the 4 LEDs and gave the memory error leds. So I put in the ram, and it gave me the next error. So on and so forth. I kept putting in whatever piece of hardware it was crying about, until it got all the way through, at which point I put in my extra stuff (sound card, tv card). Yes, it's a pain in the ass.
When I was putting them back in, the only thing I did different is I put my tv card in the slot above the orange PCI slot (the one on the bottom that is "enhanced"). I'm wondering if that wasn't the problem to begin with.

  • K8N Neo FSR - IDE Trouble (I think)

    Hi.
I got two identical systems I try to setup, and it has been nothing but trouble for the last 2 days. All following descriptions goes for *both* systems.
Installing XP Pro with SP2, fresh. Getting read errors from CD's, then write errors on HD. Blue Screens and instant re-booting.
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT 0x0000004E is the first to occure
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL 0x0000000A is the next.
2 brand new intallation disks used.
Installing W2k, ...see above, same happens.
Tried with both hitting F6 and installing the provided drivers on floppy, and using Windows default drivers. Same result.
Tried disabling all SATA/prefetch/NIC/USB/whatever in BIOS, same result.
Tried Crucial / Corsair / TwinMos / No-branded RAM, same result.
    Tried ThermalTake 480W, Q-Tec 450W and Chieftec 420W
Tried with shipped BIOS 1.1 and 1.40
HD strapped as CS or Master, CD strapped as CS or master...tried all 4 combos, but install somehow 'made it' with both set to CS on separate channels.
Ok. Now the OS is on the box:
    W2k - Login - BSOD - Reboot
XP Pro SP2 - Looks fine, just do NOT touch the disks:
    Defrag - Reboot
    Install e.g. Office - Reboot
    Norton AV-scan - Reboot
Memtest 12 hours - No problem
Anyone got any idea of what is going on here???

    Hi.
Yes I've tried, but all but CS is making things worse.
I just rippet out the MOBO from one of them an hour ago, and replaced it with a K8N Neo Platinum, using the drive as it was. Same jumpers - same OS. And guess what: XP found a bunch of new hardware, and the machine has just completed its first virusscan. No problems at all.
Guess this just confirms that there is an issue with the Neo FSR. I've setup a bunch of the Platinums before, but this was my first (and very last) two FSR's

  • K8T Neo FSR Won't Boot!

    Hello!
My system doesn't boot  . It power all of the fans and disk. The Power and Hard Disk leds stay lit (no blinking) the D-Bracket shows 3 red leds and one green led (green is on the lower left). I try without any disk units, no cards (just my graphic card which I test on my P4 machine and is OK) and just 1 stick of ram. The sytem was working "normally" except for some sporadics blue screens and reboots and  the no NVRAM thing and that my RAM gets automatically reset to 200 (that's why I try the 1.92B BIOS ver) Last thing I remember was flashing the 1.92B Bios using the windows utility and after that kaput!   What can I do? are there any procedures to fix this or did I kill my mobo?
Any tips suggestions will be really apreciated, many thanks in advance.

    Hi
The lower left led is inialising the Keyboard controller.  ODD if nothing has been changed.
you can reset the comp by clearing the jbat1 jumper. Switch power off first, page 2-25 of manual.  If that does not work make a rescue disk. place file AMIBOOT.ROM on floppy put floppy in drive, reboot and press ctrl + home.
    But check the keyboard  first.
    cheers

  • K8t neo-fsr - starts playing computer static?

I just got an Athlon 3400 and a k8t neo-fsr from Newegg.  Put XP on it, tossed in a new NX6600GT (also from MSI), a stick of GEIL 3200 512mb RAM (which is another story) and everything seems to work - except that sound "freaks out" after dealing with the computer for a bit.  Everytime I've done it I've been in Explorer, and clicking on something.  The static sounds like you're playing a CD-ROM in the stereo, crossed with modem noise (no, no modem installed - the only extra card is an extra NIC that I needed initially to get drivers).
I've run the live update and that doesn't seem to have helped at all - new bios, drivers, etc.  Still does it.  If the computer just sits there, no problem, but after I interact with it for a while it starts, and it takes a reboot to fix it.  I played Max Payne 2 for an hour a couple of nights ago without any problems, for what it's worth.
Anyhow, this is the damndest thing, and amazingly irritating.  Anyone have any ideas?  I tried searching but didn't see anything appropriate.  Thanks.

Is is still the chipset in control and if you notice this is made for our chipset working with the AC97 chip. Just try it. If it does not work then uninstall it and reinstall the AC97 drivers. Or yuou can read about it on the Via site. They can give you far more info than I can. All I know is that it works and does so better than the AC97 drivers.

  • K8T Neo-FSR problems booting

    Hi
My Computer is having problems booting. Two days ago i went to boot my computer and all the fans started up and everything seemed fine, but then nothing happened at all, but my computer was still running (cpu fan is running, power suppy fan running, red light on tower has some activity at the begining but then nothing)(my monitor light is flashing like it does when the computer is off) , so I turned off the computer by the button. Then i rebooted the system and everything worked fine. Today I went to boot my computer and this happened again, but now it won't boot at all. I have had this motherboard since january and I have never had a problem before. Any ideas of what is going on? I am assuming that it is something with bios, but I have no clue what. I have already unplugged any devices that are not needed during startup, I still have the same exact result, I tried to update the BIOS but it didn't read the drive because i'm assuming it doesn't know the boot order because that all comes the BIOS, so this is was leads me to think its something with the BIOS and not my hardware. My computer has a boot manager, I beleive its OSN??? This sits on my Maxtor drive with windows xp and solaris10 sits on the other Hard drive. Is there any more information you need?

  • K8 neo fsr problems...

    Hi there;
    I have a K8 NEO FSR with GeForce3 motherboard.
It was sold to me from someone who had updated the BIOS to version 1.5.
However, with my current configuration, I can't seem to be able to make it stable.
    Here's my configuration:
    - CPU: 2800 clawhammer
    - RAM: 256x2 (infineon with Samsung chips)
    - VIDEO: Saphire ATI 9200 SE
    - OS: WinXP SP2
My problem is that every time I turn off the PC, I can't seem to turn it back on, unless I clear the BIOS/CMOS. No matter if I change the BIOS settings, or if I use the default parameters.
Upon rebooting, I don't have this problem. Only when I turn the machine off.
Another thing: As soon as I put the power cable into the power-supply, the PC turns on immediately without having to push the ON button. Is this simply a BIOS configuration that I can alter?
Anyone have any ideas on how I can resolve this motherboard/bios/cmos issue?
    Thanks!

It happens following clearing cmos. Once you start booting & shutting down normally you won't get this.
What Power supply have you. what are the amps on the rails, 12v=??A 5v=??A 3.3v=??
The last time i heard symptons like that was with the Neo2 boards running Winchester 939 CPU's.
It was cured by reducing the HT multiplier (Bios - Cell Menu). Don't know if it will help you.
What settings is your memory on Memory Voltage & Timings.
What Hard drives & optical drives have you.

  • PT880 NEO-FSR always needs to autodect hard drive

I have a new PT880 NEO-FSR motherboard which takes 30 seconds to autodetect the harddrives every bootup.
In the bios, it recognizes my hard drive but does not seem to keep it stored and upon rebooting displays "autodecting pri hard drive..press to abort". This happens every time I boot.
I have an u-ata 100 Western Digital hard drive that I've stuck on other systems and had no problem.
My experience with other motherboard/bios is that when I set autodetect in the bios, it recognizes my hard drive, stores that value and upon rebooting does not need to autodetect my hard drive once more.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

manually set the HDD specs, the heads, sectors, and stuff are printed on the disk itself, i almost never use auto detect because it can slow down boot time.
