Random restarts after hard drive change!!

Hi guys, I have a Late 2009 15" MacBook Pro (Unibody) A1286 that recently had a hard drive change due to the stock one coming close to failure. After a couple hours of usage, It suddenly freezes (and if i'm playing audio, it sounds like a broken record for a second) and restarts and gets the "Your computer restarted because of a problem" message. When the desktop loads, It requests to send a report to apple and provides this message:

It was a brand-new hard drive, so there shouldn't be any issues!!! Any help or ideas ? The person I got the HD from suggested it's another issue such as the power adapter or motherboard, but It started after the swap.

Back up all data, then remove the Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:
Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac

  • My Mid 2009 Macbook pro (Just purchased) will not turn on after hard drive change and ram upgrade

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive.

  • How do I reinstall after hard drive change?

Been running Lion since its release and now it will not boot up. My hard drive is one year old and Lion, thru Disk Utility, is saying that my hard drive is bad. I'm going to change my hard drive but am wondering how do I get Lion back on the new hard drive that I'm installing.

Here are Apples directions: http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/.  Scroll down to" Internet Recovery. Help is everywhere."

  • Can't reinstall software after hard drive change

My old hard drive failed on me last week, so I had to buy a new one. I want to reinstall my adobe suite CS5.5, but the computer just spits the disk out after a few minuets. What am I doing wrong?
I have a mac book pro, mid 2009, with Snow leopard OSX 10.6.8

You can bypass the discs and download the trial version from the page linked below.  Then use your serial number to activate the software to full use.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site or else the download will not work properly.
    CS5.5: http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs5-5-direct-download-links.html
If this works, then there may be a problem with the setup of your disc drive.

  • Help after hard drive change - some songs not available

I had an external hard drive that started to act wonky and wouldn't mount.  I was able to get to mount one last time and transfer the contents over to a new hard drive.  Now every time I start iTunes there is a message about checking for gapless playback.  I believe there are 82 tracks.  It goes by rather fast so it is hard to read each and every title.  The ones I have read upon checking I find that the songs have no content.  They just don't exist.  When you go to control I instead of the track showing the length it shows Not Available.  Is there anyway to search my hard drive to find out which tracks are having a problem?

Go to the Dougscripts web site and get the script called ListMIAs

  • ReBoot after Hard Drive Change Pavilion DV7 Problems

HP Pavilion DV7 LapTop Windows 7 Old Drive had massive problems and was slow as... molasses. We made a recovery disc and then installed the new drive. The computer boots, but it asks for imagery and we don't know what its asking for. so we cancel out and it goes to a screen that asks us what drivers we want to install. once again we don't know what drivers to install. cancel out goes to another screen, offering choices for 1)Startup Repair (which won't work, runs for every does nothing)   2)System Restore (won't work)    3)System Image Recovery (won't work)  4) Windows Memory Diagnostic( ? )  5) Command Prompt ( ? )   6) Recovery Manager (?)    So can someone help? Want to have the laptop boot up and load OS.

Since you have the install disk you want to make sure you boot from the disk. I believe its F9 to enter boot options on DV7 and select the dvd drive to boot from. There disk should then run automagically and install windows 7.

  • HT1923 what hard drive changes are made when downloading i-tunes 10.6 upgrade

what hard drive changes are made to my computer when downloading the i-Tunes 10.6 upgrade / update?
what registry changes does it make, if any?

Ok, so as far as the hard drive goes, go for the biggeset one you can afford/need. 500 gb, should be plenty big for just about anybody. But as for the speed of the drive.... Yes, a 7200 rpm drive will drain the battery life much quicker than a 4200 rpm drive or even a 5400 rpm drive. Apple has been shipping 4200 rpm drives as a standard for ever practically, and recently made the 5400 rpm the new standard with the 7200 as an option. More important than the physical speed is the buffer size. A nice big buffer will provide quicker access to data and not eat into your battery life. Then there is also the option of an SSD (solid state drive), but those are still crazy expensive.
I've read any Serial ATA drive is compatible with the drop sensor. I upgraded my hard drive with a Seagate, and it works great. Apple generally ships Toshiba drives in their laptops.
replacing a hard drive can be a bit of work. First of all it will void your warranty (But your is obviously expired anyways) It is pretty complicated and takes a lot of patience. iFixit has great step by step instructions. here's a link : http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBookPro_15%22_Core_2_Duo_Models_A1226_andA1260
    Hope this helps

  • How to change iTunes Media Folder location after Hard Drive Died

I have been trying to figure this out from other posts but can't seem to find what I am looking for. I store all my music files on an external hard drive. Recently, the external drive died on me. Fortunately, I had the external backed up on another drive using Time Machine. I bought a new drive for the music and transferred the files onto the new drive. My question is what do I do next? Currently iTunes still searches for the files on the dead drive and I get the exclamation marks next to each song which is obviously not a surprise. I want to change the Media Folder preferences to the new drive but will I then lose all my playlists? Basically what I want to do is direct iTunes to the new drive and keep everything else intact. Is that possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    j

  • IPod sync problems after hard-drive upgrade/change

    Hello all,
    Can anyone PLEASE help?
I have just had my hard drive upgraded/changed from the original 640GB drive to a new 2TB drive. I've also had an additional 4GB of RAM added to now give me 8GB RAM.
Absolutely everything else seems to be working fine (unusual for me and I'm often at the end of bad luck in such circumstances). The only thing I'm having problems with is syncing my iPod Classic with iTunes. Incidentally, I have the latest version of iTunes and my iPod software was up to date  the last time I checked.
Before I go further, my system specs are:
    iMac
    24-inch, Early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 (12C60)
When  I connect my iPod Classic, the iPod screen initially shows  'Synchronisation in progress' (or whetver similar wording it actually  is)... but this is just very briefly. It then indicates "Connected", and  that's the way it stays and doesn't change at all.
It takes time to actually show up in iTunes, and when it does, I now have to very quickly click the iPod button (to bring up the iPod screen on iTunes) before the pointer turns into the spinning beach ball.
Now, it hangs... and hangs... and hangs... and hangs.
During this, I notice that "Manually manage music and videos" is ticked (which I didn't have ticked before), and also 'Enable disc use' is also ticked, although greyed out.
Occasionally, the spinning beach ball will disappear and the pointer will return, but this is very very briefly and I have a split-second to try unticking - first - the "Manually manage music and videos" box and then - later, if I'm lucky - untick the 'Enable disc use' box. However, on the odd occasion I've managed this, I haven't been able to go further except for two occasions when I managed to click "Apply". The iPoid on those to occasions started to update... but went nowhere... it just did nothing.
When the thing finally just hangs and hangs, I eventually have to 'force quit' iTunes and unplug the iPod without first ejecting. There was one other occasion when I managed to - split-second when the spinning beach ball disappeared - to click "eject" and the iPod succesfully did so.
There were a couple of occasions in the past when I had trouble with my iPhone and was told to delete/trash the iPhone photo cache folder. Remembering this, I tried this for the iPod (iPod photo cache) and it made no difference... same situation.
I did notice on one occasion at the beginning of all this that when I managed to unplug my iPod from iTunes, all the album covers were missing from the iPod (although still in iTunes). This was long before I tried deleting the iPod photo cache folder though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards
    BionicDan

First things first the spinning beach ball is usually an indication that Search is going nuts.
Turn off Search entire Library by clicking on the downward pointing arrow to the right of the Magnisying glass and untick Search entire library.
Is your music still in iTunes on your new hard drive or is it only on your ipod?
If it is in your itunes then you should be able to plug in the iPod and uncheck Manually Manage music and sync
If the music is only on the ipod connect up as above click on the device and Drag all the music from your device to the library. then you can uncheck manually manage music and sync as normal

  • How to restore playlists and ratings after hard drive format

Several people have reported problems restoring paylists and ratings after reformating a hard drive. Here is what worked for me and what did not.
I had to reformat my hard drive. Before doing that I exported my playlists from itunes to another hard drive as an xml file. I also copied the folder with all my songs to another drive. (Also of course had it backed up on DVDs.)Then I copied the itunes library files (see url http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732) to anoher drive.
After reformating my hard drive and installing the lastest verion of ITunes, I copied the actual songs back into a subfolder in my music folder. I then told iTunes to import the subfolder with the actual music. That resulted in a restored library that lacked playlists and ratings.
    Don't do this
I purchased Anapod ($30.00) because its web page said (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/):
"Anapod CopyGear is an easy-to-use, compact utility for copying music tracks, playlists, podcasts, photos, and videos from your iPod back to your PC."
Well, I did transfer 104 playlists back to my iTunes library through the Anapod backup function. However, the transfer also put more than 20 gigs of duplicate songs into the library. All of the songs listed in the playlists were duplicated in iTunes. I could find no way in Anapod to simply copy the ratings and the playlists. Anapod documentation was outdated. For example the online help pages said that playlists could not be backed up. This was confusing because I had just done that.
"In a future release we will be adding the ability to backup your iPod playlists. This will allow you to generate backup files of your iPod playlists on the computer. These files will not be usable on your computer though. They can only be used to restore playlists at a later time on your iPod (assuming it still carries all the audio files referred to in that playlist)." This text is from url http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/support/tome/tx2pc.php#5.1.2
I sent requests to Anapod for help today, but they have not been answered yet. Docs truly did not seem to help. Would have been good if there was a pdf file rather than just an online help html file that seemed outdated.
    This worked for me:
I ended up having iTunes wipe out the entire library because of all the dups Anapod made. (Made sure that iTunes only wiped out library and did not delete actual songs from hard drive. Then I had iTunes import my subfolder with songs again. That brought me back to where I was before wasting money and much time on Anapod.
After I had my iTunes library up (without ratings and playlists and after finding Anapod did not meet my needs.
    1. I imported the xml file to which I had exported playlists before reformating hard drive. That gave me the playlists back although an error message said some items not copied because the music tracks listed in playlists were not in my iTunes library. --Possibly I deleted songs after playlists were downloaded some time ago to iPod. Importing the xml file is probably not necessary because of what I did below.
    2. Quit iTunes
    3. Because my song ratings were still missing, I then moved the iTunes library files made by the new version of iTunes into a different folder.
    4. Then I put my old version 4 library files into the place where the library files should be.
    5. Then I crossed my fingers and restarted iTunes. It took awhile to start and said it was updating my library files. Now I have back most or all of my playlists and ratings.
If problems develop, I will probably wipe out iTunes library and use Anapod to move everything from my iPod into a folder and tell iTunes to import that folder. That approach might avoid the dups that Anapod makes when restoring playlists to iTunes.
So my message is keep your actual songs backed up somewhere (such as DVD's and anotehr hard drive) and keep a duplicate copy of your library files somewhere not on your hard drive. With these items you should be able to restore iTunes library to its former status.
Sorry for the length of this message. Hope it helps someone.

    The simple version of above:
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
    1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    4) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
    5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”

  • Trouble installing snow leopard after hard drive replacement

My imac hdd died last weekend. And the replacement hdd came in today.
I went through all the steps in this guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Hard+Drive+Replacemen t/6284 And I am pretty sure I did it all correctly.
However, after plugging my imac back up it gave me a flashing folder with a question mark. I took this as it asking for a os disk to install with so I put my snowleopard disk into the imac. The folder with the question mark turned into the apple logo.....and that's it. It just stays on the apple logo and nothing happens. I tried leaving it like that for a good hour. But nothing changed.
What am I doing wrong? My imac is a mid 2010 model (emc 2389). I'm pretty sure the included os on it was Leopard. Do I need to try and find my Leopard disk that was in the box? I'm not sure where it is and all I have at hand is my Snow Leopard installation disk. And if I do need to use Leopard, how would I do that if I can't find the disk my imac came with?

With the Snow Leopard DVD in the drive, Restart the Mac while holding down the "C" key. It will then boot from the DVD drive, a slower process for sure, but not more than a few minutes. Once booted, you can use Disk Utility to verify that the new internal drive is formatted properly, GUID. Some new drives come pre-formatted as something else.
