Random screen Freeze, but mouse is responsive

Hi,
For the last month, I have been having random screen freezes , requiring me to hard-boot the computer. During this freeze the mouse is responsive. I wait 15 minutes to see if the freeze goes away before rebooting.
I have re-formatted the disk and installed Mountain Lion, again , but it did not help. Most of the time it seemed to happen when I am using Safari, but this is not always the case.
The hardware tests came clean.
I have isolated the console logs to the following just before the issue happens. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

• Late 2013 15" Macbook freezing, but mouse still responsive, any suggestions?

Hi,
I have a new late 2013 Macbook Pro 15" Retina that keeps freezing periodically throughout the day, When it freezes the mouse can still be moved, but nothing else can be clicked on the keyboard commands are non responsive.
I did notice a GPU hang in the system logs. Is anyone else having this issue? Suggest any solutions?
Thanks,

I have had this issue twice so far. The first time it happened when I was exiting Safari, and the second when I was closing the Pixelmator. So it may have something to do with automatic graphics switching. It can be disabled in System Preferences -> Energy Saver, but I haven't yet bothered to try, since it only happened twice and kind of defeats the purpose of having two GPUs. Hope this helps.

• Screen Freezes but Mouse Still Moves

Hey I have an iMac with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors and I am running OS 10.6.7 and my screen freezes (sometimes goes to a black screen or many lines repeated) but my mouse is still able to move, then I have to shut down manually with the power button to reboot. It happens mostly when I am gaming with games such as starcraft 2 but sometimes with Word or Safari.
I have cleared my cache, vacuumed my computer, reinstalled OS X, tried regulating the temperature with smcfan but nothing works. I also took it to futureshop on my warranty and they couldnt help me, nor could multiple Mac Phoneline assistants.
Any solutions?

I added some Crucial Ram to my late '07 iMac (Aluminum, 20", 2.4 ghz),
Apple did some warranty work on it for me, a year or so ago, but.
I jumped up the Ram from 2-4. It's only showing 3 Gb's now.
And, the fans were ALL running at Full Speed! Wow, vacuumed my desk!
Anyway, I came here, and was advised to do several things, but the one that worked,
was 'Resetting the System Managements Controller" SMC.
1 Shut down the computer.
2 Uplug the computer's power cord.
3 Wait fifteen seconds. (HMM, what couldja do?)
4 Attache computer's power cord.
5 Press the power button, to turn computer back on.
I heard a high pitched 'Chong', (Higher than the start up sound), then, the start up sound.
Now, I'm in my comfort zone again!
Dam, if that didn't work wonderfully?!!!
It did!
I hope that this may work for you!
Be well.
PS btw, I still can't get my 2nd stick of Ram to work.
I'm still working on that.
And, my third, Western Dig, 2 TB external HD!
What's with these third party suppliers?
They suck!
Apple has to bring some control back in!
I bought the WD @ a Mac Store, (Cherry Hill, NJ)
The Memory, through Amazon.
Grrrrrrrr!
Hope this works for you, let us know, OK?

• Vidoe in full screen freezes unless mouse is moved in version 27.0.1

I'm running windows 7 64-bit. You tube videos freeze in full screen only when mouse is inactive. This is not a problem when instant streaming Netflix videos or in internet explorer. I did not have this problem when running windows xp on an old machine a few months back. I tried all the troubleshooting steps suggested: started in safe mode, uninstalled/reinstalled, reset, downloaded most recent version, disabled plugins, checked each plugin separately and I still have the problem. I know there were threads on this issue related to version 25 which seemed to suggest this was a know bug in Firefox that was fixed in newer versions, but it is still an issue with the newest version 27.0.1. It has to be a Firefox problem since I don't have this issue with other browsers and I still had the problem in safe mode. I don't want to change browsers but will be forced to if there isn't a solution to this problem. I also made sure I have the most recent plugin versions of : adobe acrobat, shockwave flash, shockwave for director, silverlight, Java deployment toolkit, and java platform (the last two cannot be "always activated" they are set for "ask to activate") I don't understand much about plugins so I don't know if I have what I need or too much - not sure that would address my issue though.

See [/questions/976293]
The bug has a Target Milestone: mozilla30 and thus is still present in the current Firefox release

I just got my MBP 15" 2 GHz Intel Core i7 (os X version 10.6.8) last September. There are times when the screen randomly freezes but I can still move the cursor (and music/sounds from Skype still play). This hasn't been happening recently but, last time it did, there were red and green dots all over the screen.

*Do you guys know how to fix this?

• Imac G5 freezes, but mouse works. Wierd pixels right before it freezes.

Hello everyone (Miriam, I hope you find this post).
Problem:
I have an older imac G5 (20" - without isight). Worked fine for the longest time, then lately it started freezing at main screen. Mouse pointer works, but nothing is accessible. First, started freezing after 5-10 minutes of use. Then, in the span of a few days, it locked up right after entering the main screen (after blue apple screen startup).
What I did so far:
Following the imac manual, I did a hardware test after reading about logic boards and power supply issues. Used hardware utility from startup disc and everything passed. Therefore, I reasoned that it was a software issue.
Next, I used disc utilities to repair a few permissions and HD volume. Minor repairs done. Started getting passed blue OS loading screen, but still freezing at main screen.
Finally, I tried to reinstall my OS, using archive/install feature (don't want to fully reformat because I can't access files to back up). First disc - no problems. When it asked for second disc, comp froze again. Now, it freezes at blue screen, before blue apple loads the OS. Can't even get to main screen anymore. Tried it again, but same deal.
Question:
Any suggestions before I take it to apple? My warranty has long since expired, so I'm afraid of incurring large fees. I would try a full reformat, but there are certain files I need to backup, but can't do so due to the inability to even open a folder. Also, it'd be greatly appreciated if someone could point me to a thread relating to backing up files when comp freezes, therefore main screen inaccessible. If I could back up certain files, I could do a full HD reformat, then report the results here.
Not sure if this matters, but my imac version was one of the models that needed the free extended warranty for the power/capacitor issues. Repaired for free, no problems until now. Also, fan spins hard during startup, but very quiet during gray apple load screen - then freeze at blue screen. No hardware or software added recently.
Sorry for such a long post. I figured the more detailed the info., the better the responses would be. Thanks again Miriam for the redirect. I'm indebted to you!

I hate to say this, but the pixel anomalies indicate a faulty V RAM chip, which is soldered to the logic board
You may have more that one problem, the pixels being one, and the hard drive and/or the PSU being another.
At this point, you probably need to take it in and have it looked at, then you will have to decide whether it's worth repairing, or whether you will just get a new one.
In any case, please let me know what happens,

• Firefox 4 screen freezes and mouse does not click after it opens and clicks fine once or twice

I downloaded Firefox 4 for Mac yesterday. It worked fine all day. Today it opened fine. After one or two clicks of my mouse the screen froze and did not respond to any clicks or mouse movement. I have tried closing and reopening and also downloading Firefox 4 again. No luck. It continues to open fine, work for the first couple of clicks and then freeze. No other part of my laptop is affected. Safari works fine too. So I am guessing it is a problem with Firefox.

My McCaffee was a trial thing, I think. I clicked on it to see if it was updated, and it said it was expired. So I'm just going to uninstall it completely and install AdAware, which is all I've ever used for years and never had a problem.
It occurs to me -- this must (?) have something to do with my new computer... it was slow right out of the box, and I called ASUS tech support the second day I had the puter up and running, and the tech asked me to do a System File Check (SFC), but discovered that the normal pathways through which one would do a SFC (according to him) did not work - the machine would not either recognize them or it would simply swallow the command and then just do nothing... he put me on hold for a few minutes. He came back with a workaround (don't remember it exactly, but it involved a DOS prompt), and I was able to finally run a SFC, which revealed "corrupted files" that had to be "repaired."
In a brand new computer? That can't be a good thing... Maybe the system software factory install was just a bad install? Because I had some slow Firefox issues on my old machine (Acer, dual core, 4gRAM, 2009 machine), but NOTHING like this. This is getting very frustrating. I'm used to just sitting down to my computer and using it, not sitting down and fighting with it for 2 or 3 minutes or more before i can do anything.

• Lion crashes and freezes, but mouse can move.

I have a 15'' MacBook Pro from late 2010. 2.4 Ghz i5 with 4 GB RAM.
I installed Lion the day it came out and I've been experiencing the same weird freezing problem.
I tried to keep track of when it would freeze (as in what apps were open and such) but it has happened in all sorts of conditions. It's frozen probably 6 times now and 4 times were watching a video on full screen safari. One was when I booted from sleep, and another was just in Finder.
I have already reinstalled Lion once (holding Cmd+R at the boot screen), but the issue still happens.
What happens is that the application I'm running (mostly Safari) crashes and goes to the beach ball. When I force quit it, it asks if I want to report the issue (I do) and then after that the system freezes. The odd thing is that I can move my mouse around. Many times I've just force shut down from there. But one time I just pressed the power button and it asked if I wanted to shut down. When that happened, it shut down but stayed at a white screen with a grey loading circle thing (it's moving) and just stayed there for over an hour before I force shut down again.
I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and if anyone knew how I could fix it??
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi sherwu,
there are several ways to fix this problem described in this thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191083?start=0&tstart=0
Having the same issue with the same 15" model the easiest and working fix for me was to deactivate the automatic graphic switching in the energy saving panel in the system preferences.

• IMac freezes but mouse works

my late 2009 iMac has now frozen twice over two days since upgrading to Yosemite. the mouse moves around on the screen, and all appears normal, but everything is frozen and I can't click on anything. So far a power button shutdown seems to work and everything goes back to normal. I am wondering if this is a Bluetooth issue? Or not.

My problem is that randomly my computer will completely freeze with the exception of mouse movements. I was having this problem before, and tried a fresh install, fresh install with no installed programs, new RAM, old RAM, and now with a newly replaced logic board. macbook Mac OS X (10.4.7)

At long last, I have finally found out what it was.
After Apple had replaced the logic board, processor, and graphics card that Netinfo errors were still continuing. Because I had not reloaded the OS since the hardware had been replaced I figured I would give that another shot.
I got the OS installed and updated, Mac OS X 10.4.9, and ran that for just a little while. No problems at all. A few days later I started to layer on my applications, MS Office, Firefox, Internet Explorer (We still need to test web sites here with IE for Mac because some users still use IE.) After a few days, still no problems. I then started to layer on my utilities, Toast, Growl, McAfee VirusScan.
Everything still worked just fine...for a day. When I came in the next day my computer had locked up again. So I removed the utilities. Everything started working fine at that point. I put the utilities on one at a time and ran each one for several days. I finally got to VirusScan and the error's came back. I removed VirusScan and the errors went away.
The version of McAfee VirusScan I was running is 8.5. Currently I am not running any VirusScan software at the moment. Our network team here is talking to McAfee in regards to this problem. Hopefully a solution will present itself.

That is less RAM than req'd or recommended for Snow Leopard.
With a used system, always wipe the drive and system and install your own.
You can find RAM and storage upgrades @ www.macsales.com/macbookpro I woudl get 4GB RAM and invest as well in a 256GB or larger SSD to infuse new life and performance. I'd even go with 8GB and SSD if yours can't take 4GB though ifi ti will and you can.
They have tutorial video and how to guides for upgrade RAM and t he internal hard drive. And be sure you are using backups, TimeMachine at a minimum. Also look into Lion upgrade.

My Imac freezes everytime I try to load an app. Rather its a webpage on safari, playing videos on sites, iTunes, photobooth etc. I can't even load the applications folder without it freezing on me. The dock & keyboard shortcuts are frozen too. The only thing that moves is the mouse cursor, but its no good if I can't open or close anything. I wiped out my Imac to factory settings, thinking it would clear ram/men space and that didn't help. Sigh. I need help. What can I do? What should I do? Is this a firmware or system update problem? Help me please!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
